Heartbroken US star Caeleb Dressel misses chance to defend Olympic titles in 50-meter free, 100 fly

NANTERRE, France (AP) — Caeleb Dressel finally let it all out, his individual events in the pool complete and not even close to the results he had wanted. The decorated American missed chances to defend two of his Olympic titles from three years ago in Tokyo, and he broke down.

Dressel sobbed, and he sobbed some more. For several minutes, he cried Friday night.

Shortly after a sixth-place showing in the 50-meter freestyle, he failed to reach the final in the 100 butterfly.

“Obviously it’s not my best work,” Dressel said. “I had a lot of fun though, I can honestly say that. It hasn’t been my best week, I don’t think I need to shy away from that, but the racing’s been really fun here.”

Bouncing along moments before his freestyle race, Dressel made his way onto the pool deck when his name was introduced looking confident as ever. He raised his arms and side-shuffled to reach his spot in Lane 2.

Dressel set Olympic records while winning both the 50 free and 100 fly — the latter also a world record — among his five golds at the Tokyo Games, but touched the wall in 21.61 for sixth in the free Thursday. His fly semifinal was a shocking 13th-fastest.

Dressel hung over the lane rope after the free, taking his time leaving the water. He insists he won’t let these disappointing races ruin his stay in France.

“Just seeing the moment for what it is instead of relying on just the times,” Dressel said. “I’m at the Olympic Games. I won’t forget that. I’d like to be performing better. I’m not. I train to go faster than the times I’m going, I know that. It’s tough. It’s a little heartbreaking, a little heartbreaking for sure.”

The 27-year-old Dressel has been cheered on by wife Meghan and their five-month-old son, August, sporting oversized protective headphones in the deafening noise of La Defense Arena.

The baby did get to witness Dad bring home one gold medal. Dressel anchored the winning 4×100-meter freestyle foursome as the Americans beat out the rival Australians and Chinese on Saturday night in Day 1 of Olympic swimming competition.

That marked his eighth career gold. In Tokyo, he also won the 100 free and 4×100 medley relay after capturing golds in the two relays at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, too.

Now, Dressel is going to enjoy this last stretch in Paris as best he can. After all, Dressel might not have been here at all if he hadn’t taken a prolonged break from swimming in 2022 to work on his mental health and regain his love for the sport.

He turns 28 on Aug. 16, and now there’s plenty more work and self-care to be done. It has made such a difference for Dressel.

“Nope, I wouldn’t be at this meet, I probably would have been done swimming a long time ago, to be honest,” he said. “It’s still a work in progress, so I have years ahead of me I’m looking to, but a lot went into this just to be here.”

Terence Crawford vs. Israil Madrimov fight prediction, odds, undercard, preview, start time, expert pick

Terence Crawford attempts to win a world title in the fourth weight class of his career when he takes on WBA junior middleweight champion Israil Madrimov on Saturday in Los Angeles. The fight is Crawford’s first at junior middleweight after winning a world title at lightweight and becoming undisputed champion at both junior welterweight and welterweight.

While Crawford has long been seen as one of the elite fighters in the sport, his most recent performance vaulted him to one of the top two spots on nearly every pound-for-pound list in the sport. In that fight, Crawford dominated Errol Spence Jr. in a long-awaited clash to crown an undisputed welterweight champion, scoring a ninth-round TKO.

Crawford has not returned to the ring since his July 2023 thrashing of Spence. It was originally expected the two would meet in a rematch but Spence underwent cataract surgery, allowing the time to expire on the contracted rematch clause.

With Crawford already planning a move up in weight, he was then able to focus on conquering new ground and land in a fight with Madrimov.

“I feel great, come Saturday I got a treat for y’all,” Crawford said this week. “I’m expecting him to do anything he can to throw me off, but I said it before and I’ll say it again, this is the Terence Crawford era and I’m taking that belt.

“I’m just so competitive that when I think I’ve reached my ceiling, there’s always that extra push to do something that I haven’t done before.”

Madrimov comes from a solid amateur background, having won multiple championships. He turned professional in 2018 and has rattled off a 10-0-1 record, with the lone blemish on his resume a technical draw against Michel Soro in July 2022 after a clash of heads caused a cut over Soro’s eye. The Soro fight was a rematch of a 2021 fight that Madrimov won by TKO in controversial fashion after a punch that landed after the bell caused the stoppage.

In his most recent bout, Madrimov stopped Magomed Kurbanov in the fifth round to win the WBA title. That fight nearly didn’t happen after a pre-fight medical test revealed an issue that required a second MRI to be cleared. With Jermell Charlo having been named “champion in recess” by the WBA, Madrimov and Kurbanov were fighting for the vacant belt.

While Madrimov is a talented fighter and an argument could be made that he’s the top fighter at 154 pounds, Crawford will enter the ring as a heavy favorite to pull off the win and take the title.

“I feel great, I’ve waited for this moment for a long time,” Madrimov said. “My dream is coming true. Saturday night I’ll show every boxing fan a great fight.

“I’m only thinking about the victory, and I will show everything that I have inside the ring.”

One of the primary storylines heading into the fight actually looks past Saturday’s action as Crawford has been chasing a fight with unified super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Despite the weight difference between the two, a clash of two of the best fighters of their generation would be a huge fight and the most financially lucrative option as both men wind down their careers.

While Alvarez initially blew off the idea, he has warmed to it some in recent months, meaning Crawford needs to avoid a misstep to keep the possibility of landing the fight in play.

Let’s take a closer look at the rest of the undercard with the latest odds before getting to a prediction and expert pick on the main event.

Crawford vs. Madrimov fight card, odds

  • Terence Crawford -700 vs. Israil Madrimov (c) +475, WBA junior middleweight title
  • Isaac Cruz (c) -450 vs. Jose Valenzuela +330, WBA junior welterweight title
  • Andy Ruiz -300 vs. Jarrell Miller +230, heavyweights
  • David Morrell -3000 vs. Radivoje Kalajdzic +1400, light heavyweights
  • Jared Anderson -190 vs. Martin Bakole +155, heavyweights
  • Andy Cruz -2000 vs. Antonio Moran +1100, lightweights
  • Steven Nelson -1600 vs. Marcos Vazquez Rodriguez +750, super middleweights
  • Ziyad Almaayouf -2500 vs. Michal Bulik +950, welterweights

Prediction

Madrimov is not some light touch brought in to give Crawford an easy welcome to 154 pounds, he is perhaps the best fighter currently active in the division. That said, Crawford is one of the best fighters on the planet and should be expected to win this fight. Where Madrimov is good, Crawford is great and that is almost always the deciding factor.

Where things could get interesting is if age (Crawford is closing in on his 37th birthday) and the year out of the ring catch up to Crawford. We’ve seen almost every great fighter in boxing history suddenly hit a wall where age catches up and they lose a step and suddenly lesser fighters are able to keep up.

That probably doesn’t happen to Crawford on Saturday. Instead, Madrimov will likely have some success at times in the early rounds before Crawford locks in his plan of attack and takes over. Once Crawford gets rolling, it’s nearly impossible to stop that momentum. Pick: Terence Crawford via TKO8

LOS ANGELES — A federal judge overturned a jury’s $4.7 billion verdict in the class-action lawsuit filed by “Sunday Ticket” subscribers against the NFL and has granted judgment to the NFL.

U.S. District Judge Philip Gutierrez ruled Thursday that the testimony of two witnesses for the subscribers had flawed methodologies and should have been excluded.

“Without the testimonies of Dr. (Daniel) Rascher and Dr. (John) Zona, no reasonable jury could have found class-wide injury or damages,” Gutierrez wrote at the end of his 16-page ruling.

On June 27 the jury awarded $4.7 billion in damages to residential and commercial subscribers after it ruled the NFL violated antitrust laws in distributing out-of-market Sunday afternoon games on a premium subscription service.

The lawsuit covered 2.4 million residential subscribers and 48,000 businesses in the United States who paid for the package on DirecTV of out-of-market games from the 2011 through 2022 seasons.

“We are grateful for today’s ruling in the Sunday Ticket class action lawsuit,” the NFL said in a statement. “We believe that the NFL’s media distribution model provides our fans with an array of options to follow the game they love, including local broadcasts of every single game on free over-the-air television. We thank Judge Gutierrez for his time and attention to this case and look forward to an exciting 2024 NFL season.”

Calls and emails to the attorneys representing “Sunday Ticket” subscribers were not returned.

The jury of five men and three women found the NFL liable for $4,610,331,671.74 in damages to the residential class (home subscribers) and $96,928,272.90 in damages to the commercial class (business subscribers).

Because damages can be tripled under federal antitrust laws, the NFL could have been liable for $14,121,779,833.92.

Gutierrez did say in his decision that if he did not rule for the NFL as a matter of law, he would have vacated the jury’s damages verdict and conditionally grant a new trial “based on the jury’s irrational damages award.”

Rascher’s models were variations of a college football model. Rascher, an economist at the University of San Francisco, said during his testimony that “they figured it out in college sports, (so) they would certainly figure it out at the NFL.”

Gutierrez said Rascher’s testimony “was not the product of sound economic methodology” and that he needed to explain how out-of-market telecasts would have been available on cable and satellite without an additional subscription.

Gutierrez also found flaws in Zona’s “multiple distributor” models because it predicted consumers would have paid more if another service besides DirecTV offered “Sunday Ticket” and there was an unsupported assumption that another distributor — either cable, satellite or streaming — would have been available.

“Without knowing what “direct-to-consumer” meant, it is impossible to determine if it would have been economically rational for consumers to purchase ”Sunday Ticket” from an alternative distributor at a higher price,” Gutierrez said. “And, that definition was necessary for determining whether a viable alternative distributor even existed during the class period. Without that information, the Court cannot determine whether the but-for worlds without exclusivity were modeled reliably.

The jury’s amount also did not conform to Rascher’s model ($7.01 billion) by Daniel Rascher, or the model ($3.48 billion) by Zona, who was an expert witness in the case.

Instead, the jury used the 2021 list price of $293.96 and subtracted $102.74, the average price actually paid by residential Sunday Ticket subscribers. The jury then used $191.26, which it considered as the “overcharge,” and multiplied that by the number of subscribers to come up with the damages amount.

Gutierrez said the jury did not follow his instructions and “instead relied on inputs not tied to the record to create its own ‘overcharge.’”

It is not the first time the NFL has won a judgment as matter of law in this case, which has been going on since 2015.

In 2017, U.S. District Judge Beverly Reid O’Connell dismissed the lawsuit and ruled for the NFL because she said “Sunday Ticket” did not reduce output of NFL games and that even though DirecTV might have charged inflated prices, that did not “on its own, constitute harm to competition” because it had to negotiate with the NFL to carry the package.

Two years later, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals reinstated the case.

It is likely the plaintiffs will again appeal to the 9th Circuit.

Caeleb Dressel breaks down in tears after falling short in 50m free, 100m butterfly – NBC New York

Team USA’s Caeleb Dressel broke down in tears, letting it all out Friday evening after he finished his final individual event of the Paris Olympics — without even close to the results he had been hoping for.

The decorated American missed chances to defend two of his Olympic titles from three years ago in Tokyo, and he broke down. Dressel sobbed for several minutes, the finality and disappointment of the moment hitting him. Hard.

The emotional moment came shortly after his sixth-place showing in the 50-meter freestyle, and then failing to reach the final in the 100 butterfly.

Dr. Jud Ready, a Principal Research Engineer at Georgia Tech, explains that the organizers of the Paris Olympics picked maximizing the number of seats in the swim stadium over maximizing the speed of the competition pool.

Vybz Kartel freed after murder conviction overturned

Vybz Kartel spent more than 10 years in prison before his conviction was found to be unsafe

Jamaican dancehall artist Vybz Kartel has been freed from prison after judges decided he should not face a retrial for murder.

The 48-year-old, real name Adidja Palmer, was jailed in 2014 but his conviction was overturned by UK judges in March.

He had been accused of killing of Clive “Lizard” Williams in Jamaica but has always maintained his innocence.

Although his conviction was overturned months ago by the Privy Council in London, authorities in Jamaica had time to decide whether he should be retried.

On Wednesday, appeal judges in Jamaica decided the case would not go back to court, meaning Kartel, who is said to be in poor health, could be released.

His trial in 2014 heard that victim Clive Williams and another man, Lamar Chow, were given two unlicensed firearms belonging to Kartel for safekeeping.

When they failed to return them at an agreed time, prosecutors said they were summoned to Kartel’s house in August 2011.

Chow told the trial they were attacked and the last thing he saw was Clive Williams – who was never seen alive again – lying motionless on the ground.

The house burned down days later and his body has never been found.

Kartel and his co-accused Shawn Campbell, Kahira Jones and Andre St John, have always maintained their innocence but were convicted and jailed for life, with Kartel told he would spend a minimum of 35 years in prison.

He appealed first to courts in Jamaica before taking his case to the Privy Council in London, which serves as the highest court of appeal in Jamaica and other Commonwealth countries.

His defence team argued that a juror accused of trying to bribe others should have been thrown off his trial.

The London court agreed with Kartel’s case and ruled in March that the decision not to remove the juror made the conviction unsafe.

The judges said it was “fatal to the safety of the convictions which followed” and “an infringement of the [defendants’] fundamental right to a fair hearing”.

The court heard Kartel is in poor health after 13 years in custody

On Wednesday, Justice Marva McDonald-Bishop, one of three judges sitting at Jamaica’s Court of Appeal, said they had weighed up the “egregious nature and seriousness of the offence” against the passage of time, lack of access to witnesses and evidence and the huge expense of a retrial.

She also said Kartel was in “declining health” and a new trial would have an impact on his physical and mental wellbeing.

“We conclude that the interests of justice do not require a new trial,” she said, adding that Kartel and his co-defendants were formally acquitted.

According to the AFP news agency, there was heavy security at the courthouse in Jamaica’s capital, Kingston, and the hearing was closely watched across the country.

‘Mammoth day for dancehall’

Vybez is known as one of Jamaica’s most popular artists and has collaborated with performers such as Jay-Z, Eminem and Rihanna.

His best-known hits include Clarks, Ramping Shop and Summer Time, and his success led to him launching lines of shoes, alcohol and condoms.

The singer also became the first dancehall artist to star in his own reality TV show, Teacha’s Pet.

Seani B, who presents 1Xtra’s Dancehall Show, tells BBC Newsbeat Kartel’s release represents “a mammoth day for Jamaica, a mammoth day for dancehall music, and a mammoth day for the Jamaica judicial system”.

“He’s easily one of the biggest dancehall artists in Jamaica,” Seani says.

“And for the last 14 years, Kartel has probably become even more infamous. Now on his release, I would say he’s returned to a space that’s been awaiting him for so many years.

“There’s a whole new generation of dancehall fans that are just waiting for Vybz Kartel’s return to that music.”

Seani was DJing at Boxpark in Croydon, south London, on Wednesday and says he was on his phone backstage listening to the court’s ruling.

“When it was announced, it was jubilant.

“It’s a relief for a lot of people but at the same time, we’ve got to think about the family of the person that was murdered so many years ago.”

Sha’Carri Richardson reveals her favorite foods in Dallas, including Oak Cliff

Team USA star Sha’Carri Richardson is a Dallas native who attended Carter High School in Oak Cliff.

The sprinter will be going for gold in the 100m dash and started her journey in the Paris Olympics today, Aug. 2. She won her 100m opening heat with ease and will compete in the semifinal round on Saturday.

Richardson is far from home in Paris, but recently shared her favorite spots to grab some food in Dallas in an interview posted to Instagram by NBC.

Richardson goes for Golden Chick for chicken tenders. The chain was founded just south of Austin in 1967, but now is headquartered in Richardson and has over 200 locations across the southern U.S.

Richardson shouted out Big T Plaza in Oak Cliff as her favorite place for a slice of pizza. “If you know, you know Dallas,” she said.

Big T Plaza is a 1-level shopping center with various stores for apparel, jewelry & hair braiding located off Village Fair Dr.

For a burger, Richardson said she’s going to Blackjack Pizza, which the Dallas Observer said has “one of the most slept-on burgers in Dallas.”

For Tacos, her spot is Fuel City Tacos. Fuel City is just south of downtown on Riverfront Blvd. and offers quick, budget-friendly street tacos.

“There’s so many places, that’s why when I got home I have to control myself,” Richardson said.

She also shouted out Carter High School as her “place to have a good cry.”

“If I’m back home, and I want to unwind and be to myself, I’m going to my home track, from my high school,” Richardson said. “I’m gonna go back to my home track and just sit there and take in the beginning and look at where I am now.”

2024 Olympics: Hungarian boxing body protesting to IOC over inclusion of Algeria’s Imane Khelif

A Saturday quarterfinal in women’s boxing is drawing an unusual amount of attention thanks to the participation of Algeria’s Imane Khelif. The Hungarian Boxing Association is protesting to the International Olympic Committee ahead of Khelif’s scheduled matchup with Hungary’s Anna Luca Hamori.

Hungary’s state news agency said Hamori still plans to go through with the fight, though the association may make a legal challenge to Khelif’s participation, too.

Khelif’s in-ring run in Paris began with a first-round victory after Italy’s Angela Carini conceded the bout after 46 seconds. Carini’s emotional reaction to the loss yielded a visit from the Italian prime minister and generated worldwide headlines.

Khelif, a welterweight, fought in the Tokyo Games in 2021 and was a non-medalist, but the focus on her participation in 2024 stems from a post-competition disqualification at the 2023 world championships. The International Boxing Association said after that event that Khelif and another boxer, Lin-Yu-ting of Chinese Taipei, had failed unspecified gender eligibility tests.

The disqualification was issued without documentation from the tests and both fighters had competed in previous IBA events without incident. The IOC labeled it as sudden and arbitrary, and without due process.

Lin won a unanimous decision in her Friday morning bout in the round of 16, defeating Uzbekistan’s Sitora Turdibekova at featherweight. She will face Svetlana Staneva of Bulgaria in the quarterfinals.

The IOC said eligibility rules for this year’s Games were based on rules from the Tokyo Games and would not be changed during the competition. The committee issued a Thursday statement lamenting the treatment Khelif and Lin have endured.

“The IOC is saddened by the abuse that the two athletes are currently receiving,” the IOC said. “Every person has the right to practice sport without discrimination.”
