Chelsea vs Newcastle LIVE: Premier League result and reaction as Cole Palmer goal proves decisive

Chelsea vs Newcastle LIVE: Premier League result and reaction as Cole Palmer goal proves decisive

Chelsea moved themselves into the top four of the Premier League with a well deserved 2-1 victory over Newcastle a Stamford Bridge.

The Blues dominated and controlled possession in the first half with Eddie Howe’s Magpies looking uncharacteristically uneasy as the match went on. Cole Palmer, always eager to impress, had the ball in the back of the net with six minutes only for the goal to be ruled out for an offside in the build-up.

However, it didn’t take Chelsea long before they went ahead. Palmer released Pedro Neto down the left wing and he squared to Nicolas Jackson for a tap-in after a quick counter attack.

Alexander Isak managed to pull one back with an awkwardly taken equaliser to send the teams into the break on level terms but it was Palmer who had the last word. Less than two minutes after the restart he slotted past Nick Pope to secure the points for the hosts.

Palmer speaks to Sky Sports

16:23 , Chris Wilson

Chelsea talisman Cole Palmer is first to speak to Sky, and he says that Chelsea “don’t mind proving people wrong”.

“I try and go out there and play my game. That is what I do. I always try to enjoy my football game by game.

I try to not put pressure on myself. Many people on the outside try to put pressure on me to replicate what I did last season in terms of numbers.

“It is my second season playing football and I am still very, very young.”

Regarding Chelsea and fighting for top four, he said: “We just try to play our own game, block the noise out from the outside. We don’t mind proving people wrong.

“We are all young and we have a top coach, but there are improvements still.”

HALF-TIME! Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle

15:07 , Chris Wilson

And back at Stamford Bridge, we have an intriguing second half ahead of us between Chelsea and Newcastle.

The home side certainly dominated large parts of the first half and looked the more dangerous of the two teams. This dominance showed as Nicolas Jackson put the home side ahead within the first 20 minutes.

But the home defence switched off for a moment to allow Isak in to equalise, and since then it has been a little more equal.

Chelsea have certainly been the better of the two sides though, and they’ll fancy their chances of grabbing a win here.

Both sides will certainly need to be more clinical, and more solid at the back, if they are to come away with a win though.

HALF-TIME! Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle

Eddie Howe says Anthony Gordon felt a problem with his groin yesterday and so has travelled to London but won’t feature. He’s not sure how long the England winger will be out.

Match facts

Newcastle have won two of their last four Premier League games against Chelsea, drawing one and losing one. This is as many wins as they had in their previous 13 (D1 L10).

After winning three of their first four Premier League games this season, Newcastle have since failed to win their last four, drawing two and losing two. The Magpies last went five matches without winning in the league in March 2023.

Eddie Howe has won two of his Premier League games against Chelsea in charge of Newcastle – only Alan Pardew (four wins) has beaten the Blues more in the competition for the Magpies.

Howe also beat the Blues four times while in charge of Bournemouth and could be the third manager to win 3+ Premier League games against them with two different clubs, after Kenny Dalglish (Blackburn/Liverpool) and David Moyes (Everton/West Ham).

Enzo Maresca explains why ‘slow’ learner Mykhailo Mudryk is starting to prove worth for Chelsea

13:35 , Chris Wilson

Enzo Maresca admitted Mykhailo Mudryk has been a slower learner than his Chelsea teammates but praised the winger’s performance in his side’s 4-1 win over Panathinaikos.

It was an efficient yet thorough display in Athens to maintain the visitors’ perfect start in the Conference League and the Ukrainian’s contribution was key, scoring the second goal with a brave header as well as setting up two goals for Joao Felix.

Maresca previously challenged Mudryk to seize upon his selection in the starting XI and prove the worth of his £88million transfer fee, and those words were heeded as the 23-year-old had his strongest game of the season in the Olympic Stadium.

Match facts

Chelsea’s last three Premier League defeats have come against last season’s top-three sides (0-5 vs Arsenal in April, 0-2 vs Man City in August, 1-2 vs Liverpool last weekend). The Blues are unbeaten in 19 games against all other teams (W13 D6), scoring 54 goals across these matches.

Chelsea have named the youngest average starting XI in the Premier League this season – 23 years, 220 days. They are the only team in Premier League history to get eight games into a season without using anyone over the age of 27.

Cole Palmer has 18 goals and five assists in his last 14 Premier League appearances at Stamford Bridge for Chelsea, while Nicolas Jackson has been involved in 13 goals in his last 13 Premier League appearances (nine goals, four assists).

Chelsea’s match is just one of the important matches near the top end of the table today, as Arsenal host Liverpool at the Emirates at 4.30pm GMT.

Much has been made of Arsneal’s potential injury woes, but can Arteta get a solid performance out of a depleted side after a few poor results of late?

There’s also an additional 2pm kick-off today, as Manchester United travel to West Ham hoping to ease some of the pressure on Erik ten Hag. They currently sit 13th in the league on 11 points, one place and one point behind Newcastle.

13:15 , Chris Wilson

Chelsea have lost just one of their 29 Premier League home games against Newcastle, winning 21 and drawing seven. Their last loss against the Magpies was a 2-0 defeat in May 2012 – a game fondly remembered by some for a brilliant brace from Papiss Cisse.

Eddie Howe: “We have to have a perception of achievement and growing as a football club”

13:10 , Chris Wilson

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said that his side “need to score goals”, after suffering a small run of games without finding the net.

“It’s been at the heart of everything we’ve done since we’ve been here, to be an attacking team, and we certainly haven’t lost the intent to attack or score.

“I’d just love to see us be free and take those chances we create.

“We have to have a perception of achievement and growing as a football club to keep not just the so-called big names happy, but everyone happy and going in a forward direction.

“I’ve seen it very quickly go the other way. Myself and everyone connected at the club has a big job to try to keep that momentum positive.”

Howe also praised Anthony Gordon as “such a talent” after the winger signed a new deal at the club.

Enzo Maresca admits Chelsea lack ‘proper leader’ as he asks for ‘more personality’ from Reece James

13:05 , Chris Wilson

Enzo Maresca has told Reece James he expects more personality from Chelsea’s captain as the head coach admitted his squad is without a natural leader.

James made his first appearance of the season in the 2-1 defeat to Liverpool last weekend following a lengthy injury lay-off and did not travel with the side that beat Panathinaikos in Athens on Thursday.

The last two campaigns have been blighted by knee and hamstring problems for the 24-year-old but he was nevertheless appointed club skipper by previous boss Mauricio Pochettino last August.

“I spoke with him and I expect from him more in terms of leadership inside the changing room,” said Maresca.

“He’s on the way, he’s doing well, he’s progressing but I expect more.”

The previous time Chelsea lost to Liverpool they were labelled the “blue billion-pound bottle jobs”. Eight months on, there was a more flattering appraisal, and from the victor. “If I would be a Chelsea manager, I would say if we can play like this at Anfield, we can compete for a top-four position,” said Arne Slot. This wasn’t a repeat of the Carabao Cup final, the extra-time failure against Jurgen Klopp’s kids, or their last trip to Anfield, the 4-1 walloping in January.

There was more respectability in a reverse. “We don’t like to lose, but if we have to, we choose this way,” said Enzo Maresca, who pronounced himself “proud but also upset”. The Italian may have been exaggerating when he said: “We controlled most of the game”. Slot’s verdict on his 2-1 win may have been fairer. “In an ideal world, we would have outplayed them completely but it was an equal game,” he said.

Chelsea vs Newcastle LIVE

12:10 , Chris Wilson

Chelsea will hope to bounce back from defeat against Liverpool as Enzo Maresca’s side welcome Newcastle United to Stamford Bridge.

Having found form under their new manager, the loss at Anfield was the second successive Premier League game in which they had dropped points.

They now take on a Newcastle side that would climb above their hosts with three points, though are without a win in four fixtures.

Eddie Howe’s visitors have drawn a blank in their last two outings and will hope to remedy their attacking ailments here.

Good afternoon and welcome to The Independent’s live coverage of today’s early kick-off between Chelsea and Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are looking to return to winning ways after a loss against Liverpool last week, and the Magpies are doing the same after a surprise loss at home to Brighton.

West Ham 2-1 Manchester United: Hammers grab controversial win in stoppage time

West Ham 2-1 Manchester United: Hammers grab controversial win in stoppage time

Manchester United were left to rue missed chances and a truly baffling refereeing decision as the lost 2-1 at West Ham on Sunday to heap further pressure on Erik ten Hag.

WATCH FULL REPLAY

Ten Hag’s side missed several glorious chances in the first half and then went behind in the second half as Crysencio Summerville finished for West Ham. Casemiro equalized soon after but in stoppage time VAR asked referee David Coote to go to the monitor for a possible foul by Matthijs de Ligt on Danny Ings and the referee awarded a penalty which Jarrod Bowen scored to win if for West Ham.

With the much-needed win Julen Lopetegui’s Hammers move to 11 points for the season as they move above Man United, who are also on 11 points and have now lost three of their first nine games.

Man United left to rue massive missed chances, once again

Okay, so it was never a penalty kick on De Ligt which ultimately lost Manchester United the game in second half stoppage time. But they should have been 3-0 up at half time, at least, as once again missing big chances came back to bite them. Erik ten Hag looked on in disbelief as Dalot missed an open goal, Fernandes missed a glorious chance, Garnacho missed another easy chance and hit the bar. That was all in the first half as Man United tore West Ham apart. But the second half was different as West Ham sat deeper, made a triple sub at half time which worked a treat to shore things up and United no longer got behind them with one long ball forward. All of the post-game talk will be about David Coote going to the monitor after VAR asked him to and awarding that controversial penalty kick, but Man United should never have been in the position to let that decision be so pivotal. Once again they missed big chances and as the pressure builds on Erik ten Hag, there’s only so much he can do. He’s setting this team up to create big chances and get in on goal but his players aren’t finishing and have scored just eight goals in nine games in the Premier League this season. Their xG total says they should have scored close to 15 and are the least clinical team in the league when it comes to xG to actual goals. That is why they’re in the mess they are in and are already six points off the top four.

West Ham vs Manchester United final score: 2-1

Summerville 74′, Bowen 92′; Casemiro 81′

West Ham vs Manchester United live updates! – By Joe Prince-Wright

Bowen slots home the penalty kick – West Ham 2-1 Manchester United

The West Ham skipper makes no mistake as he slams home into the bottom corner. That is a hugely controversial goal.

VAR check for a possible penalty for West Ham

De Ligt bundled into Ings in the box but there isn’t much there. However, after a check on the monitor the referee awards a penalty kick. Drama!

Casemiro heads home! – West Ham 1-1 Manchester United

A clipped ball is headed back in to the mix, substitute Zirkzee heads it towards goal and and Casemiro heads home. United level late on!

Hojlund misses his header and Fabianski saves

A cross into the box is dangerous but Hojlund misses his header and Fabianski claws it clear and saves the rebound.

Summerville puts West Ham ahead! – West Ham 1-0 Manchester United

A cross from Bowen sets up a chance for Ings and his scuffed shot falls straight to Summerville who finishes at the back post. His first goal for West Ham is a big one. He’s been excellent since coming on at half time. West Ham lead with just over 15 minutes to go!

Ings is on for Antonio

West Ham are hoping Danny Ings can be their hero late on…

Emerson almost converts a cross

It is all West Ham now. The cross into the box finds Emerson but he can’t sort out his feet to steer the ball in and a big chance has come and gone for West Ham. Still, they are much more competitive. Rashford has been replaced by Diallo but United have yet to get going in the second half.

Antonio curls just wide

Much, much better from West Ham so far in the second half. Michal Antonio curls just wide. The Hammers look more comfortable and are playing much deeper. That triple sub of Summerville, `Todibo and Soucek coming on at half time has had a big impact.

Onana is down getting lengthy treatment

Andre Onana comes sliding out to get the ball and just as he gets there in front of Michail Antonio he gets a clip on the head from the West Ham forward he can’t get out of the way. After lengthy checks, Onana is okay to continue and Antonio apologies for the incident. It was purely accidental and it’s great to see Onana is okay to continue.

Half time: West Ham 0-0 Manchester United

Somehow Man United aren’t ahead, but don’t ask me how. From Garnacho hitting the bar and missing a glorious chance, to Bruno Fernandes missing a big chance, Diogo Dalot missing an open goal and both Casemiro and Hojlund denied, United could be out of sight by now. But West Ham are somehow level and have had the odd chance from crosses and counters. West Ham have been very poor defensively and United continue to open them up with one long ball over the top. Surely the Hammers won’t be that open in the second half.

Fabianski denies Casemiro’s header

That is a top stop from Fabianski. Eriksen whips in a free kick and Casemiro flicks a header on which looks destined for the far corner but the veteran goalkeeper palms it away and West Ham clear.

Dalot misses an open goal!

Bruno Fernandes chips a perfect ball over the top and Diogo Dalot is in. He knocks it past Fabianski and has an open goal but he loops his shot off target with West Ham defenders rushing to get back on the line. Dalot has got it all wrong there. Yet another glorious opportunity wasted by Man United.

Hojlund denied and Fernandes should head home

West Ham are all over the place defensively as Hojlund turns and his low shot is saved well by Fabianski. Moments later a cross finds Bruno Fernandes totally unmarked but he heads wide from eight yards out. He should be scoring. United could have scored four already inside the first 15 minutes!

Another brilliant chance for United

United once again are in but Garnacho curls his shot wide of the far post. Again, he should be scoring. West Ham have been let off the hook twice early on.

Garnacho smashes the crossbar!

An awful ball out of the back is pounced on by United and the ball is played in to Garnacho in the box. He curls it towards the top corner with a first time effort but it hits the bar and comes back out. Garnacho should be finishing that. Huge chance inside the first three minutes for United.

West Ham lineup

Fabianski; Wan-Bissaka, Mavropanos, Kilman, Emerson; Rodriguez, Alvarez; Bowen, Soler, Paqueta; Antonio

Manchester United lineup

Onana; Dalot, De Ligt, Martinez, Mazraoui; Casemiro, Eriksen; Rashford, Fernandes, Garnacho; Hojlund

West Ham vs Manchester United prediction

Scoring chances will likely be at a premium, whether by design and/or lack of creativity between the sides, and West Ham don’t have the feel of a team that wants to roll up their sleeves and get dirty. For their considerable shortcomings, desire and effort are never a problem for United. West Ham 0-1 Manchester United.

West Ham vs Manchester United preview

Back-to-back wins would be a swell start to an unexpected rescue mission after the Red Devils (12th place – 11 points) came back from a goal down to beat Brentford last weekend. But to have any hope of surviving the intense, choppy seas of festive football on the horizon, Manchester Untied are going to have to score some bloody goals. Only three sides have scored fewer goals than Man United (7) though 8 games, and those sides currently sit 18th, 17th and 19th in the Premier League table. United, for their part, are only slightly better off in 12th with a -2 goal difference. Alejandro Garnacho has 2 goals and Bruno Fernandes has 2 assists, but no one else in the team has more than one goal or assist thus far.

West Ham (15th – 8 points) are off to a rather poor start of their own, as only three sides have conceded more goals than the Hammer (15) through 8 games, perhaps hitting rock bottom last weekend as they were beaten 4-1 by rivals Tottenham and star attacker Mohammed Kudus was sent off for violent conduct which is expected to lead to a lengthier ban. The defensive woes are hardly new, though, as Julen Lopetegui took over in the summer and inherited a team from David Moyes that conceded 74 times in 38 games last season (4th-most). Max Kilman ($51 million) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka ($19 million) were signed in a busy summer transfer window, but the defensive issues persist nonetheless.

Tennessee Titans vs. Detroit Lions

Tennessee Titans vs. Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions are back in the friendly confines of Ford Field today after two straight on the road and are looking to make it five straight wins as they host the Tennessee Titans.

Here are five things to look out for today in this interconference matchup:

1. Offense facing a good test

Tennessee might have a 1-5 record, but they are certainly not a 1-5 defense. The Titans rank No. 1 in the NFL in total defense and No. 3 against the pass. Unlike last week vs. Minnesota, it’s not so much the scheme Ben Johnson and Co. have to worry about this week with the Titans but rather the personnel. This Titans defense has a lot of talent at all three levels.

“Might be the best we’ve seen all year,” Johnson said this week about Tennessee’s defense. “They are violent, they’re physical, they finish, and when you see a team that plays as much two-high as they do and yet still be able to shut down every run game that they face, we already know that we have our work cut out for us.”

Detroit’s scored 30-plus points in three straight contests and head into today’s matchup ranked second in total offense (411.8), third in points per game (30.3), third in passing (256.3) and fourth in rushing offense (155.5).

Eagles vs. Bengals Game Recap | October 27, 2024

Eagles vs. Bengals Game Recap | October 27, 2024

The Eagles were back in action on Sunday, picking up a big 37-17 victory over the Bengals to move to 5-2 on the season.

The Bengals fell to 3-5 on the season, still searching for their first win at home on the year.

The Eagles put together 397 yards of total offense and the defense forced an interception and a fumble in the win.

“It was exciting. It’s hard to win in this league. Doesn’t matter if you win by what we won by today, you win by one, win by two, you’re going to be excited. We put everything we have into this every single week,” Head Coach Nick Sirianni said. “It really takes truly mentally tough people to be involved in this game where you pour every ounce of what you have into each week, and then you win or you lose, and you do it again.”

Historically, two-loss teams have been able to make the Big 12 championship game. Two-loss teams typically need to win a tiebreaker to go their way to get in, but there is a precedent to making the championship game with two losses.

Technically, that would leave nine teams with a chance to make the title game. However, the first two months of the season suggest there is a four-way race to the Big 12 championship between BYU, Iowa State, Kansas State, and Colorado. Those four teams have separated themselves from the pack at this point.

BYU and Iowa State are the only two teams that control their destiny. If they win out, it will be a BYU-Iowa State showdown in Arlington. That would certainly be the best-case scenario for BYU, and it would likely be the best-case scenario for the conference as well. Two 12-0 teams would probably translate to two bids in the College Football Playoff for the Big 12.

Kansas State is a legitimate threat to be 10-1 when they face Iowa State in the regular season finale. After surviving a scare against Kansas on Saturday night, the Wildcats just need to beat Houston, Arizona State, and Cincinnati to be 10-1 going into that game.

Colorado has the opportunity to make a run to the title game as well. The Buffaloes are 4-1 in conference play and 6-2 overall. Their upcoming schedule includes home games against Oklahoma State and Utah and road games against Texas Tech and Kansas.

What happens if all four teams are 8-1 and tied for first place? That could depend on who BYU loses to. We will have a complete breakdown of that scenario in the coming days.

Broncos Starter Linked as Trade Target of 49ers

Broncos Starter Linked as Trade Target of 49ers

The Denver Broncos are very much in the thick of things in the AFC playoff picture as the NFL rapidly approaches the midway point of the 2024 season. At 4-3 Denver has nearly surpassed the team’s season win total projection from Vegas (5.5) and are quite obviously over performing compared to national expectations entering this year.

While Denver is competing for a playoff spot, it does appear the organization is still operating under the impression of a competitive rebuild season. Playing so many young players and saddled with the largest dead cap hit in the NFL, Denver could make the playoffs this season, but the reality is that this team is likely still a few iterations away from competing for championships.

With that perspective, it makes sense for the Broncos to be sellers as much as buyers as the November 5th trade deadline approaches. Denver should not take calls on players the organization views as long-term building block pieces, but players who could be on the move as free agents come this offseason? The Broncos should at least pick up the phone.

One of the players who fits this bill is third-year Broncos defensive tackle D.J. Jones. The Athletic’s Michael Silver reported earlier last week that the San Francisco 49ers are looking to add talent on their defensive line prior to the trade deadline. Given the NFC West is open for the taking this season, San Francisco is still very much in the thick of things despite sitting last in the division at 3-4.

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini also added further information on the 49ers search for beefing up their interior defensive line naming Jones, a former 49ers standout, as a potential trade candidate the 49ers might covet.

“Two other former San Francisco players, defensive tackles DeForest Buckner (Colts) and D.J. Jones (Broncos), have been discussed internally by team decision-makers but I don’t get the sense Indy or Denver are open to moving either player,” Russini Wrote.

Jones is having a resurgent year in Denver after a disappointing campaign in 2023. Jones is a shorter, squattier player than your average two gapping interior player at 6’1” 320-pounds with limited length. Howenver, he is playing well off of Denver’s other interior players Zach Allen, Malcolm Roach, and John Franklin-Myers in a more gap pressing attack oriented front under the blitz centric Vance Joseph defense.

Given Denver’s run defense is arguably the worst aspect of what is shaping up to be one of the premier defenses in the NFL this season, why would the Broncos even consider shipping Jones?

Jones is in the last year of his contract in Denver and will be 30 years old this offseason. There is a chance he could be retained, but with other areas of the roster needing addressed as well, Jones could very well walk. Given Denver is currently set to have the 10th most cap space in the league this upcoming offseason, the Broncos are unlikely to be awarded a compensatory pick for letting Jones walk. The Broncos will likely spend on an equivalent contract or more on a free agent, canceling out any possible compensatory pick for Denver.

As Russini stated in her article, the Broncos are likely unwilling to move on from Jones. It’s hard to imagine the team getting a substantial return on a 29-year-old run-stopping interior plug that would make the loss from him on the defense this season worthwhile.

Any move like the swapping of mid to late day 3 picks is not as valuable as just keeping Jones in his current role. If the 49ers were willing to give up a 4th round selection or send back a Day 2 pick in exchange for Jones and an early Day 3 pick from Denver, then perhaps Denver could play ball, but that seems unlikely.

If the Broncos were to move on from Jones, then expect a larger dose of former 4th-round pick Eiyoma Uwazurike. After missing the entirety of 2023 due to a gambling suspension, the Broncos have kept him around and have praised him when given the opportunity.

There does seem to be internal optimism surrounding Uwazurike becoming a serviceable player at some point in the near future, and a Jones departure would accelerate that opportunity.

The Broncos are not likely to take away from the strength of their team and hamper their playoff pursuit by moving off from extremely useful defensive line piece DJ Jones. He has had a very good season on the team’s most improved unit and is a key cog to the run defense.

Removing him could have a domino effect on the entire unit that is surviving miniscule investment at the inside linebacker position due to the strength of the secondary in man coverage and a deep rotation of defensive linemen.

Jones may not be a part of the Broncos the next time this team is truly in championship contention given his age and this being the last year of his contract, but that doesn’t mean the team should just give him up for little return.

If the 49ers are willing to give a valuable draft pick in return, then Denver should be interested. But anything less, and it’s just simply better to keep him for a 2024 playoff run and re-evaluate whether or not the team should retain him this offseason.

Tatum scores 37 points and Celtics hold to beat stubborn Pistons 124-118

(AP) — Jayson Tatum scored six of his 37 points in the final 65 seconds and the Boston Celtics held on for a 124-118 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Saturday night.

The Celtics led by as many as 23 points in the first half, but trailed for much of the third quarter. Jrue Holiday tied the game with back-to-back 3-pointers, and Tatum put the Celtics up 116-114 by hitting a pair of free throws with 1:05 left.

The Pistons missed two shots on the ensuing possession and Tatum’s jumper made it 118-114 with 29 seconds left.

Malik Beasley’s 3-pointer pulled Detroit within one, but Derrick White hit two free throws and Boston clinched the game from the line.

Jaylen Brown had 24 points and 10 rebounds for Boston. Jaden Ivey had 26 points for Detroit while Cade Cunningham finished with 21 points and 10 assists.

Takeaways

Celtics: Boston started the game looking like they would break the NBA record of 29 3-pointers they tied on Tuesday against the Knicks. They had 15 in the first 18 minutes of the game, building a 64-44 lead. In the next 18 minutes, they went 4 of 14 on 3s.

Pistons: A young team could have rolled over when they were getting blown out by the defending champions, but Detroit outshot Boston 59.1% to 33.3% in a 31-point third quarter. But they couldn’t create good shots down the stretch.

Key Moment

After cutting Detroit’s lead to 110-106 with 8:16 left, the Celtics failed to score on their next six possessions until Holiday hit a 3-pointer with 3:32 to play. However, the Pistons only scored two points in the stretch.

Key Stat

The Pistons led 110-106 with 8:16 to play, but only scored eight more points.
