A novelization of the sights and sounds from the Mavericks’ home opener

A novelization of the sights and sounds from the Mavericks’ home opener

Few days throughout the NBA calendar are as special as day one. There is no dread of a lost season or any regret of games that got away. There is only excitement and hope, which are amplified when you experience game one in person. I have been going to games my whole life, as my dad has had season tickets for the Dallas Mavericks since 1984. I am fortunate to have experienced so much, but inherently the volume of games I have been to takes away from the allure of any single one. Despite this, the first game I go to every year is always a special feeling, and having it be the first game of the Mavericks’ season this year, I wanted to document the experience to look back on.

Before even walking in, the buzz around the stadium was clear. They rolled out the blue carpet and player cutouts on Victory Plaza, and there was not a road within two miles not being traversed by fans. The lines to get in were long well before tip and the excitement was palpable. Once you got inside, the colors and smells of the concession stands helped bring about a sense of deja vu. Public address announcer Sean Heath’s voice crept through the hallways leading to the seats like your mother calling you down for dinner. In an ever-changing world, so much of American Airlines Center was the same, which gives the returning fan a sense of home.

Seeing the players warm up is always a treat, as you gain a new appreciation for just how big they are. This was especially true on Thursday night when Victor Wembanyama towered over 20-plus NBA athletes. He truly felt larger than life. The lights went down and the National Anthem was sung and the lights came back on for a minute while the Spurs’ starting lineup was announced. The arena went dark again, and the Mavericks were ready to be recognized for the first time this year. The announcement of the players was goosebump-inducing. From the confusion of Brandon Williams’ name coming first to the roar for Klay Thompson to the ambiance of Eminence Front by The Who playing during the pregame video (which has been their hype song for as long as I can remember), there was not an aspect of the before-game antics that did not increase your readiness for the game. The only thing left before tipoff was Heath telling the fans to be “rowdy, loud, and proud” from “the opening tip to the final buzzer”. He said his peace and the game was underway.

The tradition (originating from something the Thunder do) of standing until Dallas scores continued, and the fans were able to sit down when Daniel Gafford threw in a hook shot for their first points of 2024-25. The verbal relief of sitting down paled in comparison to the cheer of the next made basket when Klay Thompson’s first field goal as a Maverick went around, up, and down just over a minute later. The rest of the first half was fairly uneventful as Dallas shot poorly and trailed by two. After waiting out the halftime bathroom lines, it was time to get seated for the second half.

The third quarter was far more reminiscent of last year’s team. Every Luka Doncic three felt familiar and exciting, and when Dereck Lively dunked the arena felt the vibrations. Their 40-point third-quarter outburst had the crowd rocking like a playoff game. The fourth quarter had a nervous anxiety to it after Dallas went up by 21 points and Jason Kidd left Luka Doncic and Lively in the game. Many people stayed to the end to hear Heath end the night with his signature “Mavs win! Mavs win!”. As the exits were flooded with happy Mavericks supporters, the drum line could be heard echoing through the concourse. It was a great feeling to be back and an even better one with a Mavericks win.

Week 8 Colts vs. Texans Game Open Thread

Week 8 Colts vs. Texans Game Open Thread

The Indianapolis Colts are on the road to take on the Houston Texans for their week eight game, Sunday at 1 p.m. EST.

The Colts come into week eight having won four of their last five. A lot of Colts fans (and writers/bloggers/podcasters/YouTubers) have been riding that high and I feel like I’m living on an island, all alone, with my firm belief that this Colts team is not as good as it’s record. Don’t get me wrong, I’m really happy this team is above .500 in late October. That is fantastic. But had the Colts not played a rookie in his third game (Caleb Williams), a retread that has since been benched for what’s left of Russell Wilson (Justin Fields), Will Levis and the all-star combo that was Tyler Huntley and Tim Boyle last week against the Dolphins, well I’m not sure this team would have won any of those games. But the fact of the matter is, you can only play who is on your schedule and the Colts went out and won those games.

So I don’t mean to take anything away from the team.

This week I’ve seen people point out that the Texans only won by two points in week one and how last week C.J. Stroud threw for a career low 86 yards. They’re missing a great wide receiver in Nico Collins and their defense is missing multiple star players as well. And that’s all true but this Colts defense is bad. Very, very bad. Zaire Franklin is playing the worst football of his career. He isn’t getting off blocks and I don’t care how many tackles he ended up with last week, how many of them came before the back was 4-6 yards beyond the line of scrimmage? You don’t need to actually go look, it wasn’t many. Even the defense’s best plays from a week ago were from fluky fumbles that were caused after a Miami back had already picked up a big chunk of yards.

Had the Colts played better quarterbacks, frankly, I don’t know that they would have won a single game this year. And yes I just got done lambasting the run defense and you might be wondering how I’m making that connection. That’s fair. But when the Colts do manage to prevent the opposing running back from picking up a first down on either first or second down runs, often that opposing team chooses to throw on third down. Bad quarterbacks don’t often convert on third down. C.J. Stroud, despite his play last week and Collins’ absence, is unfortunately, a very good quarterback.

After watching Anthony Richardson last week, I also feel completely alone in the online Colts world. First let me say, Richardson was bad. There. Got that out of the way.

But it is wild to me the way people are talking about why he was bad.

I feel like I’m the only one who remembers week two against the Green Bay Packers. When he was sailing passes to wide open receivers and then when asked about it, he more or less said that he was working through things too quickly, getting excited and trying to rush the throw which was making the ball come out wildly.

So last week was it the same thing? No! His throws were mostly on target. He had one or two off target throws, but every quarterback will have one or two they’d like back. So what was it last week? Everything he threw came out late. He slowed down, way down, too slow. He worked his reads, found the open man, got his feet right and threw the ball. The problem wasn’t his accuracy it was that from the time he found his receiver to when he actually made the throw it took too much time, allowing the defensive backs to make a jump and break up the passes.

THIS IS FANTASTIC NEWS!

Not because the result was bad. Not because the balls were deflected. Not because we had to listen to another week of narrative based “analysis” but because he took a problem he had the last time he played a full game and he fixed it in the next one. He is working through a problem he (and probably his coaches) identified and he’s fixing things week to week. This is what progression looks like. It isn’t always that things just get better. Sometimes you have to suck at something in a different way before you figure out what works and the process is happening right in front of our eyes and it sure feels like everyone is missing it.

Little known online fact about me (I think) I coached gymnastics for almost a decade. I mostly coached bars and floor (I’m a big guy who was good at spotting the kids, I was most useful on those two events) but every now and then I would find myself working with kids on vault or beam. I, after a near decade of coaching, still don’t know that much about beam, I won’t get into it here but just know, I don’t. The one thing I do know is that when a kid is learning a new skill and is consistently falling off of the beam on the same side, you convince them to fall off of the beam on the other side. Every time I told a kid to fail, but just differently, I would get confused looks and every time they successfully fell off the beam on the “other” side, I would then tell them to split the difference and land on the beam the next time they did the skill. And guess what? Normally that worked.

Sometimes you have to fail multiple ways to understand how you can succeed, before you actually succeed.

I don’t know if Anthony Richardson is going to be a good quarterback. I hope he will be. But I am sure that he is progressing and it feels like no one in the football world is noticing.

Either way I expect the Colts to lose this game, mostly due to the defense. Unless Richardson puts it all together this week (unlikely) and the offense is dominant, I expect this to be a rough watch for Colts fans. I hope I’m wrong.

Harris, Cheney work to sway undecided voters, GOP women in 3 battleground states

Harris, Cheney work to sway undecided voters, GOP women in 3 battleground states

MALVERN, Pa. — Vice President Kamala Harris held a series of moderated conversations with former Wyoming Republican Rep. Liz Cheney in suburban cities in the battleground states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin on Monday during which Cheney worked to assuage concerns that Republicans may have about voting for the Democratic candidate.

“If you’re at all concerned, you can vote your conscience and not ever have to say a word to anybody, and there will be millions of Republicans who do that on Nov. 5, vote for Vice President Harris,” Cheney said to Republicans at the Michigan event.

Cheney and Harris also worked to draw contrast between the vice president and former President Donald Trump, someone they described as a threat, “unstable” and untrustworthy.

With two weeks until Election Day, the effort was part of the Harris campaign’s effort to reach swing voters in the crucial battleground states. Harris spoke with Cheney in the suburban areas of Chester County, Pennsylvania; Oakland County, Michigan; and Waukesha County, Wisconsin.

The events — aimed to appeal to white suburban women who vote Republican — happened the day before in-person voting began in Wisconsin. The conversations were moderated by Bulwark publisher and longtime Republican strategist Sarah Longwell and conservative radio host and writer Charlie Sykes.

Both Harris and former President Donald Trump had events scheduled for battleground states this week as they worked to win over voters in what’s expected to be a close contest. On Monday, Trump spent time in in the battleground state of North Carolina.

While in Pennsylvania, Harris and Cheney worked to pick off Republicans disaffected with their party’s nominee who may vote for the vice president and focus on the dangers Trump poses to the country and to democracy.

“There are months in the history of our country which challenge us, each of us, to really decide when we stand for those things that we talk about, including, in particular, country over party,” Harris said.

Cheney, a staunch Trump critic who endorsed Harris in September despite their party and policy differences, said “every single thing in my experience and in my background has played a part” in her supporting Harris.

“In this race, we have the opportunity to vote for and support somebody you can count on. We’re not always going to agree, but I know Vice President Harris will always do what she believes is right for this country. She has a sincere heart, and that’s why I’m honored to be in this place.”

At the Michigan event, Cheney said that she understood why some Republicans would find it difficult to publicly support Harris.

“I certainly have many Republicans who will say to me, ‘I can’t be public.’ They do worry about a whole range of things, including violence. But, but they’ll do the right thing,” she said.

At the final leg in a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Harris continued to draw a contrast between herself and former President Trump.

“Do we want a president of the United States who spends his full time plotting revenge while they sit in the Oval Office, or a president who is actually focused on the American people?” she asked.

Cheney continued to slam Trump and said he can’t be trusted.

“I think that the bottom line on this, as on some of the other issues, is, you know, you just can’t count on him. You cannot trust him. We’ve seen the man that he is. We’ve seen the cruelty and America deserves much better.”

Cheney voted to impeach Trump following the events of Jan. 6, 2021, and was vice chair of the House select committee that investigated the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. She received backlash from Trump and other Republicans for her criticism of the former president and was censured by the Republican National Committee.

Since her endorsement of Harris, Cheney has campaigned for the vice president — including in battleground Wisconsin, where she called Trump petty, vindictive and cruel.

Cheney is among a handful of prominent Republicans, including her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, who have pledged to support Harris’ bid.

The number of actual votes these events could move, with just two weeks to go, is small — yet could be significant in states expected to be decided by slim margins, Joe Zepecki, a Milwaukee-based Democratic strategist, told ABC News.

Ideally, Zepecki said, the events would bring over “Republicans available to Harris who might need one last reminder, one last push in that direction.”

George Levy, a 66-year-old voter from Delaware County, outside Philadelphia, said he was an independent until Trump entered the political arena in 2015.

“I’m never going back. I’ll be a Democrat from now on,” he told ABC News as he waited in line to enter the intimate theater in Malvern, Pennsylvania, a Philadelphia suburb that was the site of the first Cheney discussion of the day.

“[Cheney] did the right thing for our country, and I’m proud of her for doing that,” he said. “I know she doesn’t agree with many Democratic policies, but she believes in our country and loves our country, and I appreciate her speaking out.”

In a social media post on Monday, Trump attacked Harris for campaigning with Cheney, claiming that the former Wyoming Republican congresswoman is going to lead the United States to go to war with “every Muslim Country known to mankind” like her father and former Vice President Dick Cheney “pushed” former President Georgia W. Bush to the war in the Middle East.

Harris’ events this week will feature more interactivity where voters see the vice president taking questions — including during her town hall with CNN on Wednesday in Pennsylvania.

ABC News’ Sarah Beth Hensley contributed to this report.

What to expect on Election Day, according to Brown’s faculty experts

What to expect on Election Day, according to Brown’s faculty experts

On the historical significance of the 2024 election

Schiller: If elected, it is highly likely that Trump will govern in a more authoritarian fashion than any president in modern times, and he will try to disregard the rule of law, especially given that the current Supreme Court has given presidents immunity for actions taken while president. We will have to see how Americans react to the changes that would come in every corner of our democracy.

Tobin-Tyler: This election could not be more important for the future of women’s rights. The differences in the visions for the future of the country, and interpretation of the past, of the two campaigns are stark. The ideology represented by the Trump-Vance campaign envisions a return to a time when women’s roles were more circumscribed and they were expected to sacrifice their freedoms and economic independence to fulfill their role as mothers. Parts of the religious right are attacking not only access to abortion, but also access to contraception as a way to reign in what some see as too much sexual freedom for women. This vision has been reinforced by the conservative majority of the Supreme Court, which insists that the Constitution should be interpreted through the lens of “history and tradition” and the original public meaning at the time of the country’s founding, a time when women essentially had no rights. In recent cases, it has also signaled its willingness to privilege religious rights over the rights of women and gender minorities.

Reflective of this “take the country back” vision is an unwillingness to acknowledge the very real challenges faced by women in 2024: No federally mandated paid family leave, unaffordable and often low-quality childcare, a stubborn pay gap, and a growing maternal health crisis, exacerbated by inaccessible reproductive health care for many women, especially low-income women and women of color.

The Harris campaign represents a completely different vision of women’s roles and rights. If she wins, as the first woman president she will exemplify what it means for women to have equal access to power. Her record as vice president and her choice of Tim Walz, who as governor of Minnesota successfully passed paid leave and childcare legislation, also demonstrates her vision of what policies she believes can help to provide an even playing field for women.

On how the economy will affect voters’ decisions

Blyth: If we are talking about the broad mass of voters whose votes will absolutely not determine the election — say Democratic voters in Massachusetts or Republican voters in Montana — then the cost of living, especially the cost of housing, is a key issue. Unfortunately, there is very little either candidate can do about these factors in the short to medium run (build many more houses, break up concentrated markets) and one of them seems to have little interest in either solution, focusing instead on China and immigration as key themes. In terms of the less than 1% of the population that will decide the election? That’s anyone’s guess. Housing or immigration? Take your pick. And if the Middle East turmoil worsens and that affects gas prices, that adds more uncertainty into the mix.

On the role of race

Tate: Trump has made race an issue in this campaign. He accused Harris of only recently claiming to be Black. He has falsely accused Haitian immigrants of eating family pets. He said he would change Fort Liberty’s name back to its former Confederate name, Fort Bragg. He has pledged to end DEI programs in the military and in federal offices. He has also attacked Harris’ gender, calling her dumb. Harris has reacted by avoiding any discussion of her race and gender. She generally has not commented on the historic nature of this election, and the fact that she could become the nation’s first Black South Asian female president. When asked directly about Trump’s comment about her racial identity, she refused to answer, saying “next question.”

By injecting race into the campaign, Trump is appealing to his base of racially conservative white voters. Political scientists have found that whites who believe that Blacks don’t try hard enough and want special favors (about 40% of the white population) greatly preferred Trump over Clinton in 2016, and that whites who believe the same things about Latinos (i.e., they don’t work hard) also preferred Trump. Trump has campaigned hard on stressing that Latino immigrants bring crime and are violent. Some Blacks and Latinos also believe that members of their community don’t work hard. These voters will strongly back Trump. If Trump wins, it will be because of his exploitation of America’s racial divisions.

Zarate:  I expect that race will play a significant role in voter behavior and affect the outcome of this election. Research has found that white racial identity and white racial animus are powerful predictors of support for Trump. Much of the Trump coalition is predicated on stoking white racial animus, and this hasn’t changed during his third campaign for president. If anything, with a woman of color as his opponent, now this strategy becomes even stronger.

Although Harris’ status as a woman of color risks hurting her electoral chances among racial conservatives, there is reason to believe it will help her significantly among Democrats. Prior to Harris becoming the Democratic nominee, there was a lack of enthusiasm surrounding the election. This is no longer the case as evidenced by the Harris team’s fundraising numbers. Although there are likely several factors contributing to this, we have every reason to believe that Harris being a Black woman is part of it. This will be important come time to count the votes. The 2020 election underscored the importance of African American voters to Democrats, especially when thinking about the surprising presidential and senatorial victories in traditionally Republican Georgia.

On Black voter polling

Tate: Harris has won back most of the Black vote that had eroded under Biden’s candidacy. Still, there are reportedly more Blacks supporting Trump in 2024 than in 2020. I am not sure Trump in the end will get a bump in Black support. I think Black dissatisfaction is there with both Harris and Trump. Although Harris replaced Biden, the choice in 2024 seems identical to the one in 2020 to dissatisfied Black voters. I think the turnout among Blacks might be low. The Democratic Party has to work harder on securing the support of young Black males.

It’s a huge match for West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui as the struggling Hammers host Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United at the London Stadium.

Life in east London as David Moyes’ successor hasn’t quite gone to plan for Lopetegui, with last weekend’s damaging derby defeat to rival Spurs leaving West Ham in the lower reaches of the EPL on just eight points.  While the Hammers have no trouble scoring, their frailties in midfield and defence has been costing them dearly, with the hosts having kept just one clean sheet so far this season.

That presents an opportunity for a United side currently in the unfamiliar surroundings of the lower half of the table. Last weekend’s 2-1 comeback win over Brentford no doubt helped ease the pressure on ten Hag, but as Thursday’s 1-1 Europa League draw with Fenerbahce showed, the Red Devils have lost the knack of winning from leading positions.

West Ham take on Man United on Sunday, Oct. 27 at the London Stadium, with kickoff set for 2 p.m. GMT local time, making it a 10 a.m. ET or 7 a.m. PT start in the U.S. and Canada and a 1 a.m. AEDT kickoff in Australia, in the early hours of Monday morning.

Below, we’ll outline the best live TV streaming services to use to watch the match as it happens, wherever you are in the world.

How to watch West Ham vs. Man United in the US without cable

Sunday’s West Ham vs. Man United match is streaming on Peacock. You’ll need a Peacock Premium or Premium Plus account to catch the game live.

Peacock offers two Premium plans, and after the recent price increases, the ad-supported Premium plan costs $8 a month and the ad-free Premium Plus plan is $14 a month.

How to watch the Premier League 2024/25 season from anywhere with a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view EPL matches locally, you may need a different way to watch the games — that’s where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds on game day by encrypting your traffic, and it’s also a great idea if you’re traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you’re able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the game. Most VPNs, like our Editors’ Choice, ExpressVPN, make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the U.S., UK and Canada, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you’re streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

ExpressVPN is our current best VPN pick for people who want a reliable and safe VPN, and it works on a variety of devices. It’s normally $13 a month, but if you sign up for an annual subscription for $100 you’ll get three months free and save 49%. That’s the equivalent of $6.67 a month with code SPECIALDEAL, which should be automatically applied.

Note that ExpressVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Can I livestream West Ham vs. Man United in the UK?

Sunday’s early afternoon kickoff at the London Stadium has not been selected for broadcast by a UK broadcaster.

That also means that if you’re in the UK traveling for pleasure or for work, you’re unlikely to be able to watch the game like you normally would at home, thanks to geoblocking.

There’s one option to get around this. By using a VPN, as explained above, you can set your location to a country where the match is being broadcast and go from there.

Livestream West Ham vs. Man United in Canada

If you want to stream this EPL game live in Canada, you’ll need to subscribe to Fubo Canada. Once again, the service has exclusive rights to every Premier League fixture this season.

Fubo

Fubo is the go-to destination for Canadians looking to watch the EPL this season, with exclusive streaming rights to every match. It costs CA$30 per month, although you can save some cash by paying quarterly or annually.

Livestream West Ham vs. Man United in Australia

Football fans down under can watch EPL matches live on streaming service Optus Sport, which is showing every single Premier League fixture of the 2024/25 season live in Australia.

Optus

With exclusive rights to stream all EPL matches live this season, as well as German Bundesliga and Spanish La Liga games, streaming service Optus Sport is a particularly big draw for Aussie soccer fans.

If you’re already an Optus network customer, you can bag Optus Sport for a reduced price, with discounts bringing the price down to as low as AU$7 per month. If you’re not, a standalone monthly subscription to the service starts at AU$25.

Quick tips for streaming the Premier League using a VPN

  • With four variables at play — your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN — your experience and success when streaming EPL matches may vary.
  • If you don’t see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the “search for city or country” option.
  • If you’re having trouble getting the game after you’ve turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs — like Roku — don’t have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you’ll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you’re using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
  • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network’s sports app, you’ll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
  • Remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you’re using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend Brave.

Packers vs. Jaguars predictions, picks, odds

Prediction: In many ways, the Jaguars look more talented on paper than the AFC South-leading Texans, especially considering all the injuries Houston was dealing with during the trip to Green Bay last week. The Packers say they aren’t taking this trip to Jacksonville lightly, but they have to prove it Sunday. This is an important test for a young but maturing team — can you go on the road and take care of business against what appears to be an inferior opponent, especially after an emotional home win last Sunday? Games against the Giants and Panthers late last year were disappointing but also immature performances. The difference in 2024? Jeff Hafley’s aggressive style on defense, and the blossoming confidence of Jordan Love and the offense. I think the Packers show why they are a different level of contender with a commanding performance on the road. Packers 30, Jaguars 20

The Houston Texans (5-2) will battle the Indianapolis Colts (4-3) on Sunday in Week 8 at NRG Stadium for bragging rights in the AFC South. The Colts have been a thorn in the Texans’ side for years, especially when Pro Bowl running Jonathan Taylor starts to pick up steam.

With a win, the Texans would secure a .500 or better record in the AFC South standings. They also would remain No. 2 in the AFC overall standings behind Kansas City and tied with Buffalo.

For the Colts, a win now put them in a tie for first place in the division at 2-1. Anthony Richardson scored a pair of touchdowns last time he entered NRG Stadium and was well on his way to a career afternoon before leaving with a concussion in the first quarter.

Week 8 NFL picks for Browns vs. Ravens

Before tuning into Sunday’s Ravens vs. Browns game, you need to see the NFL picks from SportsLine’s advanced computer model. The model, which simulates every NFL game 10,000 times, is up well over $7,000 for $100 players on top-rated NFL picks since its inception. The model enters Week 7 of the 2024 NFL season on an incredible 11-3 hot streak on top-rated NFL picks this year. Longer term, it is on a 192-132 roll on top-rated NFL picks that dates back to the 2017 season and a 46-24 roll on top-rated NFL picks since Week 7 of 2022.

For Ravens vs. Browns, the model is backing Baltimore to cover the spread. Jackson is a dual-threat playmaker under center who makes things tough on defenses. This season, he’s fifth in the NFL in passing yards (1,810) and tied for second in passing touchdowns (15). Last week, Jackson went 17-of-22 for 281 yards and five passing touchdowns. Cleveland is 13th in the NFL in total defense (317.9), giving up 23.1 points per game on average.

Running back Derrick Henry is another explosive playmaker on Baltimore’s offense. Henry leads the NFL in carries (134), rushing yards (873), and rushing touchdowns (8). He’s notched 130-plus yards four times in 2024, a big reason why the model has the Ravens covering in over 50% of simulations. You may be able to stream the game here.

‘Lioness’ Season-Two-Premiere Recap, Episode One

‘Lioness’ Season-Two-Premiere Recap, Episode One

Photo: Ryan Green/Paramount+

You wanted the best? You got the best! The hottest special-ops band in the land: Lioness! That’s right, folks: The world is a sunspot on one of Taylor Sheridan’s ranch-tanned, rippling biceps, and we’re just living in it. Hey, cool with me. The future was uncertain for this little Sheridan side project that could’ve been at the close after its first season. But with an apparently sizable audience on Paramount+ and the will to make it happen on the part of Sheridan, the exceptionally stacked cast, and everyone else involved, old Father Duty’s callin’ again for Joe (Zoe Saldaña) and the Lioness crew.

The last we saw of our ragtag CIA operatives, they’d successfully assassinated an Iranian-backed terrorist leader. Their lioness, Cruz Manuelos (Laysla De Oliveira), ended the mission alive but in spiritual tatters — unswayed by Joe’s reassurances that the operation saved lives. “All we did was change oil prices,” Cruz had said on her emotional way out of the Lioness program. As the search for her replacement kicks off in season two, the specter looming over the proceedings is how right she was.

As for the big question: Who’s the new lioness? We’ll get acquainted with her in the second episode of our two-episode premiere night. Our first episode is all about setting off the bloody inciting incident, reorienting us in the world and rules of the show, and some imperial dudes-rock, Sicario-style action for your trouble.

The cold open rips — and rips hard. A U.S. congresswoman is kidnapped by a cartel, and her family is murdered in their sleep. Joe is enjoying an impromptu breakfast at Waffle House with the family when she gets the news from the TV. Meanwhile, everyone’s favorite CIA fuckboy, Kyle (Thad Luckinbill), is swinging his dick around the crime scene, getting a lay of the land. At HQ in D.C., the usual suspects at the levers of power are gathering to plot the next moves. They’re back, folks. They’re all back: Byron Westfield (Michael Kelly), Mason (Jennifer Ehle) and Hollar (Bruce McGill), and Kaitlyn Meade (Nicole Kidman) — all riveting stars and standout character actors contributing their signature rhythms and verbal notes to the simmering espionage plan-making patter, all while Morgan Freeman as Secretary of State Mullins holds down the fort with some well-placed, occasionally F-bomb-accented mic-drop moments.

Joe arrives late to the meeting, just in time to get the crux of the debrief and her call to action. Conveniently, and somehow undetected even as she’s ripped from her house in the middle of the night, Congresswoman Hernandez (Czarina Mireles) kept a tracker on her, so they know she’s being held at a house in Ojinaga, just across the border. They want an extraction that’s messy enough to make a scene, but sending an official strike team across the southern border is against treaty protocols with Mexico. In a classic manifestation of what I like to call a “Dum Clancy” plot device, they justify the action by speculating that there has to be another major world power behind this abduction, and right now they figure it’s China. They are trying to move the global political board in a big way so they can invade Taiwan or something. Regardless, the threat of a geopolitical status quo knocking loose is established per the espionage genre’s wont. In the meantime, this gang of U.S. intelligence ghouls is aiming for a loud but successful extraction, followed by an “increased CIA presence in Mexico” — seek justice against this cartel and liquidate the potentially bigger threat behind it.

And they want a lioness on the ground. Joe’s unsurprisingly put out by the task of training a new lioness in weeks when months are required. They can eliminate the Los Tigres cartel leader, but intelligence-gathering isn’t part of their purview after that. Here’s where Freeman gets his first big shot of the season: “All right, after you kill the guy, could you be so kind as to grab his fucking phones and computers and anything else that might have some fucking intelligence?” C’mon, girl — even when we’re heisting some intel, we do it the cowboy way. You should know that. Kaitlyn chimes in: They can handle the job.

So the stage is set. Suit up, everyone; it’s time for the extraction — an extended, multipart, vaguely sepia-toned car chase–shoot-out in Mexico. Some serious “cowboy shit” organized by, of course, fucking Kyle. If hangin’ with the inglorious bastards of the Lioness crew was as core to your enjoyment of season one as it was mine, the delay in getting back with the team in full will prove a letdown here. But, hey — instead, we get the man, the myth, the legend in front of the camera. That’s right: Just when you thought Sheridan had stunted enough by writing the whole show himself (as he claims to have done with all 17,000 of his shows currently running) and directing the first two episodes of the season, our guy casts himself — in all his chiseled, hunky-leathery glory — as the titular “old soldier” Cody.

Joe knows Cody from way back, just as she knows all the guys from way back; such a guy’s gal, our Joe. Anyway, she’s not too sure about long-in-the-tooth Cody running point on this extraction, even in the company of his two wingmen, Tracer and Dean (what, are we about to play Overwatch here with these names?), which one can only take as extra assurances that Cody’s gonna badass the shit out of this mission. Indulgent as hell on Sheridan’s part, and seeing how I didn’t think we’d get another season of this madness to begin with, I’m 100 percent here for it. In for a penny, in for a pound and all that.

Once they’ve retrieved the missing congresswoman from an enemy vehicle and gotten her safely back on U.S. territory (via car-jump into an open river and one final Apocalypse Now “Ride of the Valkyries”–style blast of defensive gunfire from an air-support helicopter), Joe promises to personally carry out some extrajudicial retribution on Los Tigres. “Justice is a different agency,” she says. “My agency doesn’t do courtrooms.” A Clint-fucking-Eastwood badass line if I’ve ever heard one. And Saldaña delivers it with that familiar wired, short-fused muscularity, telling us Joe is ready to go all the way with this one.

Having sufficiently reamed Kyle for getting her team involved in some hyper-risky “cowboy shit” again (not sure what else she expected from this “ol’ spy Barbie,” as Cody calls him, seeing how his entire track record as an agent is setting up all-American carnage like this no matter where he gets called in, wound up, and set off), Joe steps away to call her sexy house husband Dr. Neal (Dave Annable) and two daughters. The turmoil that followed her family in her professional absence seems to have largely (and a little too conveniently) subsided since season one. So have her most pressing feelings of disconnect and occasional trauma-induced disinterest in family life, it seems. This bodes well for any of us who felt Joe’s family stuff was overwrought and at least partially unnecessary, getting us ready for a less melodramatic push-and-pull between the innocence of family and the looming corruption of the mission as the new season progresses.

As for the new lioness, hang on to your butts ’cause she’s comin’ in hot in the next episode!
