Buccaneers vs. Falcons Thursday Night Football result: Atlanta stuns Tampa Bay in OT in huge night for Kirk Cousins

The Atlanta Falcons were down three points, with less than two minutes left and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in possession of the ball. You’ll never guess what happened next.

After a furious drive to send the game to OT, the Falcons stunned their NFC South foes on a 45-yard KhaDarel Hodge touchdown to win 36-30. The biggest star of the night: Kirk Cousins, who shook off a slow start to his Falcons tenure with one of the biggest nights of his career.

The former Minnesota Vikings starter finished 42-of-58 for 509 passing yards, four touchdowns and an interception. He picked the Bucs apart in the drive to force OT, then hammered them again after the Falcons won the second coin toss.

The Falcons’ comeback erased an excellent night for Baker Mayfield, who was 19-of-24 for 180 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. The Tampa Bay run game also combined for 160 yards on 26 attempts. But some late missteps spelled doom for a team that no longer leads the NFC South.

Here’s how it all played out on Yahoo Sports.

Live69 updates

  • Kirk Cousins: 42-of-58 for 509 yards, four touchdowns and a pick, plus a game-tying drive with a minute left and no timeouts then the game-winning drive. It’s been a rough start for him, but he made a statement tonight.

  • TOUCHDOWN: Falcons stun the Bucs in OT

KhaDarel Hodge breaks a tackle and finds an opening the Tampa Bay defense to steal a win. What an ending, what a game.

  • Uh oh. Drake London made a big catch on third down, but he’s still down after taking a big hit. He was evaluated for a concussion earlier this game.

He’s at 154 yards now, but that may be it.

  • Falcons win the toss to open OT and can win it here.

  • The Falcons get called for delay of game, pushing Koo’s attempt to 52 yards. He makes it.

    To overtime we go.

  • Another pass to London gains 15 yards and Kirk Cousins spikes the ball with one second left. In comes Younghoe Koo to force OT.

  • The Falcons are in Tampa Bay territory…

  • The Falcons get the stop and the ball back, but burn through three timeouts. They’ll take over on their own 20 with 1:14 left and three points to score.

  • INTERCEPTION: Bucs get the pick on 4th-and-15

The Falcons do go for it and… Kirk Cousins throws a pick to Lavonte David. Atlanta still has three timeouts, but the Bucs are sitting pretty here.

  • We’ve reached the two-minute warning, with the Falcons facing a 4th-and-15 and 80 yards from the end zone. Do they go for it?

  • TURNOVER: Falcons recover a Bucky Irving fumble

Just as it was looking bleak, Jessie Bates punches the ball out of Bucs rookie Bucky Irving’s hands and the Falcons recover it. The Falcons get the ball back in their territory with 2:50 left and down by three.

  • This can’t happen in this situation.

  • Oh, that was a brutal drop from Darnell Mooney. Kirk Cousins throws him wide open on 3rd-and-6 and he just whiffs on the catch. And now the Falcons’ 54-yard field goal attempt is blocked.

  • Drake London is up to eight catches on nine targets for a season-high 110 yards and a touchdown.

  • FIELD GOAL: Chase McLaughlin good from 53 to give Bucs the lead

The Bucs are on top again as McLaughlin remains automatic. Now to see how the Falcons respond.

  • 4th-down risk pays off with a Falcons TD

Falcons were running the ball well, but stalled out at the Tampa Bay 12 after Tyler Allgeier was tackled for a 2-yard loss.

But Atlanta decides to go for it on 4th-and-4 and Kirk Cousins hits Darnell Mooney for a 12-yard touchdown pass. Mooney had the first down, but then turned to shake off Tykee Smith and got to the end zone.

    We are tied 27–27.

  • Tampa Bay 27, Atlanta 20 after 3 quarters

The Falcons finish off the 3rd quarter strong with a 22-yard catch and run by Ray Ray McCloud, followed by a 29-yard dash by Bijan Robinson.

Atlanta is at the Tampa Bay 46-yard line as the fourth quarter begins.

  • FIELD GOAL: Buccaneers respond with their own FG, but Baker Mayfield may be hurt

The Buccaneers have had little trouble moving the ball tonight. They respond to the Falcons FG with a nine-play, 56-yard drive, but finish short of another TD. Baker Mayfield also limped off the field after taking a third-down sack.

Week Five Expert Picks: Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Atlanta Falcons

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers hit the road in Week Five for their second away game, this time to Atlanta to begin a stretch of three intra-division games in four weeks. It’s also the Buccaneers’ first primetime game of 2024, set for Thursday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. To find out how to watch, listen and livestream the game, click here.

The game is the first intra-division contest for the Buccaneers, and those games within the NFC South tend to take on a life of their own. There are plenty of reasons to like both teams, according to the analysts. Some cited O-Line issues for the Buccaneers, while others noted that Atlanta has the worst pressure rate on opposing quarterbacks in the league. Atlanta’s two-headed rushing attack was a deciding factor for one analyst, but another one noted that Tampa Bay draws motivation from being underdogs. Another analyst noted that short-week Thursday games often turn into “slogs” and thinks the Bucs have more team chemistry to handle that type of game.

The Buccaneers are 1.5-point underdogs on the road but they have plenty of support from the experts. Here’s what some of them are saying:

NFL.com – Four out of five analysts side with the Buccaneers

ESPN.com – ESPN amassed ELEVEN analysts, and they’ve gone 6-5 in favor of the Falcons

CBSSports.com – Pete Prisco calls this an “enormous game” for the NFC South and sides with the Bucs

USA Today – It’s split right down the middle of six predictors

Bleacher Report – Bucs pull seven of eight picks in this assemblage of experts

Pro Football Talk – This time, Mike Florio and Chris Simms agree on the Buccaneers

Sports Illustrated – Only one dissenter leans Falcons among six analysts

Sporting News – A revenge-game win for Raheem Morris? That’s what Vinnie Iyer foresees

Halftime update:  Atlanta Falcons 17, New Orleans Saints 14

Taysom Hill, playing in his 100th NFL game, bulled in for two touchdowns to keep the Saints in the game.

Hill’s first touchdown came on a 2-yard run, giving the Saints a touchdown on the opening possession for every game this season. The last time a Saints team did that was 2009. Hill scored again on a 5-yard run, a score that was set up when cornerback Pauslon Adebo intercepted Atlanta quarterback Kirk Cousins.

Running back Alvin Kamara had nine carries for 55 yards while Hill added six carries for 24 yards. Carr was 10 of 14 for 70 yards. Chris Olave was the top receiver with three catches for 30 yards.

Linebacker Demario Davis missed the first game of his 13-year career of injury. Willey Gay took his place in the lineup but had to leave with a hand injury and was replaced by D’Marco Jackson.

The Saints will get the ball to start the second half.

A meteorologist in Atlanta rescued a woman from Helene floodwaters on camera

Follow NPR’s live updates for the latest on Helene and the fallout of the storm.

FOX Weather meteorologist Bob Van Dillen was broadcasting from Atlanta early this morning when he heard a woman crying for help in the dark.

As the city woke up to torrential rain and its first-ever flash flood emergency, the unidentified woman drove her car into deep floodwaters and got trapped.

The half-submerged car was visible, and her cries for help were audible, in the background of Van Dillen’s live shot.

He hollered to her — and explained to viewers — that he had called 911 and was awaiting the fire department on its way.

“You’re good, you’re good,” he yelled over to her, then paused and sighed to the camera. “I’m gonna go see if I can help this lady out a little bit more, you guys.”

He walked off camera.

Moments later, the meteorologist could be seen wading through chest-deep water, carrying the woman on his back.

Afterward, Van Dillen — who is 6’1″ — said he overcame his initial concerns about the current and the water temperature; it was warmer than he expected.

“As soon as I started going there, I was like, ‘Screw it, I’m getting her,’ and unbuckled her seatbelt, pulled her out, put her on my back and she was fine,” he said. “Everything worked out fine.”

He said the woman was OK, just cold. He gave her his shirt and put her in a car, where they waited for a firetruck and her husband.

When the husband arrived, Van Dillen pointed him out to the camera. The man came over to hug and shake Van Dillen’s hand, thanking him repeatedly.

Atlanta fire crews rescue dozens from record rainfall, flooding

Heavy rainfall overnight led to significant flooding in parts of Georgia, with Peachtree Creek and Nancy Creek overflowing in Atlanta, prompting swift water rescues and concerns among local residents.

Firefighters were busy all morning bringing folks in the flood zones to safety.

Peachtree Creek floods

Hanover West Drive, a street lined with homes near the creek, became a focal point of the flooding. By morning, water had risen to the height of mailboxes, and a car was stalled in front of a house, unable to move through the flooded street.

Two families in the area were rescued after calling for help as the waters continued to rise. Atlanta Fire & Rescue crews, including swift water rescue teams, arrived around 10 a.m. and safely evacuated the families without any injuries.

“I had some residents that wanted to be removed because they didn’t feel safe,” said a firefighter on the scene. “If the waters were going to rise anymore, they were worried they wouldn’t be able to get out, especially with children involved.”

While no major injuries were reported, homeowners in the area confirmed that many homes had flooded basements. Officials are urging residents to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary, citing dangerous conditions.

“We are on the high side of the street, but we still have four inches of water in our basement, and it is just not coming from the creek, but it is pumping up from under the ground,” said homeowner Stacy Quiros.

Nancy Creek overflows

As the sun rose Friday morning, so did floodwaters near Nancy Creek. FOX 5 watched a family and two of their pets being rescued on Bohler Road.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said all of these rescues occurred without incident.

“Overnight, we did experience some individuals that were stranded in the vehicles, and we have had swift recovery by Atlanta Fire Rescue Department to be able to rescue about 20 rescues and save people with boats and some were in their apartments or homes. We have rescued pets and entire families,” the mayor detailed.

The city’s joint operations center was active with all city and county agencies working together. Seventeen-hundred crews were out restoring power, and employees were checking on senior citizens. The city also is providing shelters for the unhoused.

The mayor says if you have a tree down or need any time of assistance, call 311.

First Flash Flood Emergency in Atlanta

Atlanta received a record 11.12 inches of rain in 48 hours, the most the city has seen in a two-day period since record keeping began in 1878, Georgia’s Office of the State Climatologist said on the social platform X. The previous mark of 9.59 inches was set in 1886.  The National Weather Service says this was the first Flash Flood Emergency issued in the metro Atlanta area.

Neighbors, however, remained supportive, with many checking on each other as they walked their dogs and monitored the situation. Some residents recalled past flooding incidents, including major floods in 1919, 2004, and 2009, and expressed relief that everyone appeared to be safe.

Falcons vs. Chiefs instant recap: A gritty effort comes up just short in Atlanta

The Atlanta Falcons were always going to have a tough time knocking off the Kansas City Chiefs. Add in two injured offensive linemen and a defense that couldn’t get pressure on Patrick Mahomes and what looked rough soon became insurmountable.

To their eternal credit, the Falcons never stopped struggling and trying to make a game of it, and they were remarkably close to succeeding at times. This is a tougher, more capable Falcons team than it has been in some time, one capable of suffering losses and then continuing to not just fight but actually land punches. Zac Robinson was able to, after time and a little bit of a painful stretch, find his way to a more successful game plan despite being down two key offensive linemen. Jimmy Lake and Raheem Morris managed to get the defense clamping down in key stretches, especially late in the game.

It was, unfortunately, not quite enough. The Falcons managed to drive down the field with under two minutes to go, getting close enough to give themselves a shot, but third and fourth down short yardage carries couldn’t get the yardage and effectively ended the game. Atlanta’s decision earlier to not kick a field goal and go for the end zone on fourth down—a perfectly logical choice given the situation and opponent—will probably be scrutinized this week, given that a field goal on that final drive plus a field goal earlier would’ve potentially won the game. But you go for the knockout punch against a great team every time, and the Falcons wanted to land it. Their best late game blow just wasn’t enough to overcome Kansas City.

The Falcons have, however, beaten the Eagles on the road and come awfully close to toppling the defending Super Bowl champions in primetime in back-to-back weeks. Despite the 1-2 record, it’s impossible not to feel like this Falcons team is finally heading in a better direction, and with an NFC South run coming up and then a softer schedule following that, there’s plenty of hope their improved play and learnings from these first three games can add up to something special. I wish they had won, but for once, I’m looking forward instead of dwelling.

Here’s the full drive-by-drive recap, if you’re interested in re-living the game or missed it live.

1st Quarter

The Falcons got the ball first, and the opening kickoff was a touchback. A quick pass from a rolling Kirk Cousins to Darnell Mooney allowed the speedy receiver to pick up almost ten yards. On second down, Cousins got time in the pocket and was able to find Mooney downfield for 24 yards, with a slipping defender making it easier for the receiver to reel in his second straight grab. Bijan Robinson then lost a yard on first down before Cousins, again with plenty of time, found Ray-Ray McCloud over the middle for a first down. Robinson then picked up five yards on the ground. A screen to McCloud seemed dead on arrival but resulted in a couple of yards because he fought to earn them. A wide open Drake London then caught the touchdown from Cousins to cap off an impressively early opening drive. 7-0 Falcons.

A weak return and a holding call backed Kansas City up deep. Patrick Mahomes ran a bit and fired a low pass that Rashee Rice still almost came up with, but thankfully it fell to the turf. The second down quick pass to Xavier Worthy saw him use his speed and moves to pick up a first down, and then Worthy got it again for about six yards. Carson Steele then picked up a first down, and then Dee Alford dropped Travis Kelce for a one yard gain. A strike to Rice then got 17 yards working (where else?) over the middle. An incomplete pass to JuJu Smith-Schuster followed on first down, and then Mahomes escaped pressure to pick up nine yards on the ground. A Steele carry up the middle was spotted just shy of the first down, and the Chiefs went for it and a Rice carry that appeared to come up just short was not overturned after the Falcons challenged the first down ruling. Mahomes then took a shot to the end zone that Mike Hughes played brilliantly to break up, and then a quick pass went for only a couple of yards. A quick, low pass to Rice resulted in another first down. The Falcons then got hit with a too many men on the field penalty, and then Samaje Perine took it four yards. Steele then took it for another first down. A quick pass to Steele got just two yards, and an end zone shot from Mahomes was picked off by Justin Simmons again, adding to the safety’s league-leading Mahomes interception total. Falcons ball.

Robinson took it four yards on first down with a little shimmy to get free, and then he bullied his way forward for a first down. Bijan then got crushed in the backfield on the next carry, and then a quick pass to Mooney went for a couple of yards. On third down, Cousins had to escape heavy pressure and deliver one in the direction of Kyle Pitts, who wasn’t able to reel it in. and a call on Jake Matthews did nothing to rescue Atlanta. Punt, and it was a Pinion boot and 11 yard return to set the Chiefs up just past the 20.

2nd Quarter

Six yards for the Chiefs and then a quick pickup for another three, setting up a 3rd and 1. Unfortunately, Mahomes then found Kelce for a first down. Steele picked up maybe three yards on first down, and then a quick pass to Rice resulted in a first down. Perine then picked up nine yards on the ground. Perine then easily got a first down and more, but a two yard gain and a near-sack on Mahomes set up a third and long. Somehow, Mahomes got loose and threw a first down pass to Justin Watson. Perine was hit quickly by Ta’Quon Graham on the next play, but offsetting penalties created a first down. Mahomes then missed Steele, and then Rice took a short pass for about seven yards. The next play was a touchdown pass to Rice, who got loose and into the end zone to tie it up, and a shorter than usual extra point because they also called roughing the passer on Lorenzo Carter. 7-7.

Touchback. A first down throw to Ray-Ray McCloud was knocked out of his hands for an incompletion. Tyler Allgeier then took it for four yards, and then Cousins took a deep shot to London that went a little too far for him to get. A roughing the passer call on Chris Jones kept the drive alive, but Kaleb McGary got hurt on the play. Bijan picked up a couple of yards. Cousins then fired one deep and got it to Kyle Pitts, who rumbled after the catch to the one yard line for a 50 yard gain, and a defensive holding call was declined. Bijan then punched it in from a yard out. 14-7, Falcons.

Steele picked up a first down up the middle, and then another before Mahomes hit a tight end for a 13 yard gain. A.J. Terrell then got Rice after about two yards, and then another pass to Rice got about seven. An ill-advised carry up the middle to Perine then lost a yard, setting up a 4th and 2. Harrison Butker came on and hit the long field goal try. 14-10, Falcons.

A couple of yards on first down for Robinson, and then Cousins got drilled from behind while throwing it into the turf, and the play was ruled a fumble (it looked like an incomplete) that Robinson appeared to deliberately kick out of bounds. That may have prevented the Chiefs from recovering it, and it resulted in a lot of down and a 10 yard penalty. Trouble with the snap on the next play was partially negated by a heads-up Bijan carry, but the drive still ended. Punt.

A quick five yard pass to Perine and then an incomplete stopped the clock at 1:18 for the Chiefs, and then Mahomes threw one to Rice that he couldn’t bring in and was nearly picked by Jessie Bates. Punt, with a solid return from Avery Williams.

A false start on Storm Norton backed Atlanta up. A quick pass to Drake London got eight yards, and then Cousins hung in tough to throw it up while being hit and tossed a duck that was intercepted. Turnover.

A quick pass to Perine went for eight yards. Pressure got home to Mahomes enough to make him scramble and throw it up, where it fell harmlessly to the turf out of the back of the end zone. Mahomes then threw it out of bounds on the next play. That was a nice stop by Atlanta, but Butker drilled the field goal. 14-13 Falcons.

The Falcons kneeled it out.

3rd Quarter

The Chiefs had the ball back, and it was a quick strike to Travis Kelce for eight yards to start things off. Rice then caught a short pass and spun out of contact for about a 15 yard pickup. Another pass to Rice picked up another first down, and then Mahomes found Kelce for another big chunk of yardage. A productive Steele carry got another first, setting up a goal line series for Kansas City, and the Falcons did stop Steele quickly on first down. Steele then lost about a yard thanks to David Onyemata. Matthew Judon then got pressure and nearly took Mahomes down, forcing an incompletion out of the back of the end zone. But then Judon was hurt on the play, and Butker drilled the field goal try. 16-14, Chiefs.

A solid return by Williams was followed up by a quick pass to Darnell Mooney from Kirk Cousins, which went for five yards. Robinson then picked up three yards on the ground, and on third down, Cousins tried to escape pressure and didn’t get very far. Punt.

A five yard gain and then a four yard pass to Rashee Rice got the Chiefs on the cusp of a first down, and then Steele took it for a first down. Then Mahomes hung in under pressure to get Rice working against Mike Hughes for a big gain downfield. Xavier Worthy then caught a quick pass and picked up a couple of yards. Mahomes then saw nobody open and ran for about 15 yards. Steele then picked up seven yards, and then the Chiefs followed a first with a good gain and an instant tackle of Rice on a short pass by Terrell, with Rice looking slow to get up. Unfortunately, that was followed by a touchdown pass from Mahomes to JuJu Smith-Schuster, but Butker missed the extra point. Chiefs 22, Falcons 14.

On first down, Cousins was able to get away and connect with Mooney for a first down, the first one the Falcons had managed in a while. Unfortunately, on the next play, Robinson went up the middle and was hit almost immediately for a two yard loss. A quick screen pass to Robinson was far more successful, though, resulting in a 13 yard gain and a first down.

4th Quarter

A three yard Tyler Allgeier pickup gave way to Cousins throwing a ball into the dirt, perhaps because he and London weren’t on the same page on where the receiver was going to be. Cousins then got Mooney again for a first down, while Robinson ran for three yards. Then Cousins had to dirt it with pressure in his face more or less immediately, and then Cousins once again was under pressure and threw it away on third down. Koo was able to drill the 54 yarder, though, tying a career long. Chiefs 22, Falcons 17.

Steele picked up six yards and then left the game looking a little injured, and Mahomes hit Perine for maybe two yards. Then he tried to hit Kelce over the middle, and Bates was able to hit him and knock it loose. Punt.

Unfortunately, the return was a nightmare for Atlanta, as Avery Williams tried to make a move and appeared to fumble…but his arm was down and the Falcons retained possession deep in their own territory. On the next play, Cousins was hit as he threw for an incompletion, but an illegal hands to the face penalty on Storm Norton made that worse. Tyler Allgeier then took it for about 10 yards and followed it up with another 10 yard carry. Allgeier then picked up maybe three yards. A quick pass to Kyle Pitts got another first down. Robinson then came in and rolled for three yards, and then Cousins was able to get the ball out before pressure got home to London, who made his way to a first down. Nick Bolton left the game for the Chiefs on the next play. Then the Falcons ran it with Ray-Ray McCloud, who got good blocking and took it about 20 yards down the sideline, with a missed (and seemingly obvious) facemask the only thing between him and paydirt. A quick pass out to Robinson then went nowhere, and then another Robinson touch picked up two yards. The Falcons tried to get the Chiefs to jump and they did on the next play, creating a neutral zone infraction that gave the Falcons a more manageable third down. A handoff to Robinson got maybe a yard, setting up a 4th and 2. Cousins then hit London over the middle for a swift first down. A pitch to Bijan went for a couple of yards, and then Allgeier picked up another couple of yards. Cousins then tried to slip one in to tight coverage to Pitts, but it was incomplete and there was no call despite heavy contact on Pitts. On fourth down, Cousins tried again for the end zone to London, but it was low and fell incomplete. Turnover on downs.

A quick, unproductive run by Steele was followed by a Mahomes scramble that went for about seven yards. Then Mahomes dirted it on third down and the Chiefs had to punt.

On first down, Cousins tried for Mooney on the sideline and couldn’t get it after the pass was tipped, but a penalty on the other side of the field made sure the Falcons got 10 yards and a fresh set of downs. Cousins then ripped it to London for a first down and about 12 yards, and then appeared to throw it away on a play where he noticed a pass interference call on Trent McDuffie that gave Atlanta 16 yards. On the next play, Cousins missed London a bit, resulting in an incompletion. A quick pass to Mooney went nowhere, but a horse collar on the Chiefs gave Atlanta another first down. Another quick pass out to Mooney went nowhere again, losing two yards. Then Cousins found London, who fought through contact and was able to get close to a first down. An Allgeier carry came up just short, setting up a 4th and inches for Atlanta. That fourth down carry to Robinson was dropped for a loss, ending the game, with a superlative individual effort by Nick Bolton ensuring Robinson didn’t convert.

The Chiefs then kneeled it out to win the game.

Lionel Messi comes off bench in Inter Miami draw at Atlanta

Lionel Messi was limited to a second-half appearance as a substitute as Inter Miami drew 2-2 at Atlanta United on Wednesday night.

With the Herons playing their second of three games within a week, Messi began the match on the bench. Coach Gerardo Martino had said he didn’t want to overwork his star player, who is coming back from an injury with the club in the midst of a busy stretch.

To the delight of many of the 67,795 fans in attendance at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Messi came onto the field to join the action in the 61st minute, replacing Julian Gressel.

Just two minutes earlier, Miami had retaken the lead through Leonardo Campana‘s deflected strike shortly after Atlanta’s Saba Lobjanidze had canceled out David Ruiz‘s opener for the visitors from South Florida.

Messi had a shot saved with a chance to extend his side’s lead but a spectacular late equalizer from Atlanta’s Russia international Aleksei Miranchuk meant Miami’s run of five-straight MLS victories came to an end.

“Messi always looks good, and tonight was no exception,” Miami assistant coach Javier Morales said after the game.

“He played almost 30 minutes, where he looked active. He had chances at goal, so like always his performance was positive for the team.”

Martino made several changes to his lineup for the midweek game in Atlanta, with Luis Suárez and Jordi Alba joining Messi in starting from the bench before coming on in the second half.

“We have three games this week and various players suspended so for this game Tata Martino and the coaching staff thought this was the perfect team to face Atlanta. I thought it was a good decision, since we almost took home the three points,” Morales added.

Miami remains with the best record in Major League Soccer and is trying to lock up the Supporters’ Shield and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

The 37-year-old Messi made a mesmerizing return to Miami’s lineup this past Saturday after a lengthy absence, scoring two goals and assisting on the third in a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union.

He didn’t play a year ago when Inter Miami visited Atlanta, disappointing a crowd of 71,635.

The Argentine star and eight-time Ballon d’Or winner had not played with Inter Miami since June 1 because of national team commitments and a right ankle injury sustained in a 1-0 victory over Colombia in the Copa America final on July 14.

Messi has 14 goals and 14 assists in league play, despite playing just 14 matches.

Inter Miami next visits New York City FC on Saturday.

Metro Atlanta roads closed Tuesday for Rich Homie Quan’s funeral

“Please allow extra time to reach your destinations,” police said. “The city of South Fulton Police Department will have additional officers patrolling the Old National corridor and throughout the city, prepared to handle incidents or address any potential concerns.”

South Fulton police said they would be working with Clayton County deputies and College Park police to help with traffic in the area.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution will have a reporter covering the funeral. It is open to the public, but attendees have to RSVP via richhomiequan.com. Fans who reserved their tickets can attend a public viewing from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. before doors close.

The 34-year-old rapper was a force in Atlanta’s music scene who helped push the city’s trap sound to the mainstream in the early 2010s, when he rose to fame with hits like “Type of Way” and “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh).” He also formed one of the most notable duos with Young Thug, becoming one-half of the Cash Money group Rich Gang.

An autopsy was performed earlier this month, but a cause of death was not yet revealed. On Sunday, a vigil and balloon release was held at Ronald E. McNair High School, Lamar’s alma mater.

Family, loved ones say goodbye to Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan during funeral

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The funeral for Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan was held Tuesday with thousands showing up to pay their respects.

Public viewings had been ticketed for 7-8 a.m., 8-9 a.m., and 9-10 a.m., and doors to the World Changers Church International in College Park closed at 10 a.m.

Family, friends and the people who worked with the rapper, whose real name is Dequantes Lamar, spoke at the funeral.

“Let’s remember Quan for the light he was and the inspiration, love, creativity and joy he brought to this world,” Girvan ‘Fly’ Henry said.

Henry is the CEO of Think It’s a Game Records and spent many hours in the studio with Lamar.

“The Rich Homie’s era was so epic to the culture,” he said.

Members of the Atlanta City Council also attended the funeral and proclaimed September 17th as Rich Homie Quan Memorial Day in the city of Atlanta.

On Sept. 5, Atlanta police said they assisted in response to a medical call around 11:22 a.m. to a Hampton Forest Drive residence where they found Quan — real name Dequantes Devontay Lamar — unresponsive. He was taken by ambulance to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An official cause of death has not been determined; the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office is leading the investigation. The incident report states the responding officer did not see any signs of foul play.

Rich Homie Quan was born in Atlanta on Oct. 4, 1989. He was scheduled to perform at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena on Sept. 19, 2024.

Beginning his career in 2011, Lamar first saw mainstream success with his 2013 single “Type of Way,” which peaked at number 50 on the Billboard Hot 100. His 2015 single “Flex” saw further success at number 26 on the chart.

In September 2014, Quan’s father, Corey Lamar, was injured when his barbershop was targeted in a shooting. Fulton County prosecutors have been trying to link the incident to an alleged criminal gang led by Young Thug, who is now on trial in Atlanta on multiple criminal and gang-related charges.

Several weeks ago, Kenneth Copeland (aka Lil’ Woody) admitted he and a friend opened fire into the barbershop.

When asked about his motive by Fulton County Deputy District Attorney Symone Hilton, Copeland said the shooting was “to send a message” that “we ain’t the ones to play with.”

Copeland had been a cornerstone in prosecutors’ case against Jeffery Williams, Young Thug’s real name. However, Copeland has repeatedly testified he lied to police in 2015 as they built their case around the alleged Young Slime Life or Young Stoner Life gang.

Atlanta News First is broadcasting gavel-to-gavel coverage of Young Thug’s trial on ANF+ live stream and YouTube channel, and on Roku, Fire TV and AppleTV. Download our Atlanta News First app for the latest details on Young Thug’s historic trial.

Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan dies at 33

Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan, who burst onto the hip-hop scene in 2013, died in Georgia, authorities said.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner said in a statement that Atlanta’s Grady Memorial Hospital notified its personnel Thursday of the rapper’s death.

He was 33, the office said.

A cause and manner of death was not released. An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday, the medical examiner said.

The artist, whose given name is Dequantes Devontay Lamar, scored a big hit more than a decade ago with the song “Type of Way.” He followed it up in 2015 with “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh).”

Rapper Boosie Badazz posted about his friend’s death on social media.

He said the two had “GOOD ASS MEMORIES TOGETHER N THAT GO ALWAYS BRING A SMILE TO MY FACE. #restupquan.”

Boosie Badazz said the two artists were collaborating together before Rich Homie Quan’s death.

Rich Homie Quan’s family and his management representatives could not be reached for comment Thursday afternoon.

Mark Dantonio, the former head football coach at Michigan State University, posted a picture on X of him and Rich Homie Quan embracing after Dantonio’s team won the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, 2014.

“Type of way” became the squad’s celebratory anthem for the season. Players and coaches danced to the smash hit in the locker room following their 24-20 win over Stanford University.

“RIP ⁦@RichHomieQuan Special Time, Special Place with Special People,” Dantonio wrote, ending the post with an emoji of praying hands.

That same year, Rich Homie Quan was named to rap publication XXL’s coveted inaugural Freshman Class, Variety reported. Others named by the magazine include Chance the Rapper, Ty Dolla $ign and Kevin Gates.

During his career, he was nominated for several BET and BET Hip Hop Awards including best new artist and people’s champ award, Variety reported.

Rich Homie Quan also collaborated with other notable names in the industry such as 2 Chainz, Young Thug, Gucci Mane and Trinidad James.

CORRECTION (Sept. 5, 2024, 6:12 p.m. ET): A previous version of this article misstated Rich Homie Quan’s age. He was 33, not 34.
