Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels will start on Sunday against the Chicago Bears.

Head coach Dan Quinn told CBS’ Tracy Wolfson on Sunday that Daniels will start barring a setback in pregame warmups. The Commanders then listed him as active prior to kickoff.

Daniels has been dealing with a rib injury. He suffered the injury early last week against the Carolina Panthers. Backup quarterback Marcus Mariota finished the 40-7 Commanders win in relief. Quinn previously said that Daniels was considered a game-time decision against Chicago.

Daniels’ availability ensures a highly anticipated matchup featuring the top two picks in this year’s NFL Draft. The Bears selected Williams first overall, and Washington took Daniels with the No. 2 pick.

Both players have experienced early success in their careers and led their teams to winning records. Washington enters Sunday’s game at 5-2 and in first place in the NFC East. Daniels is a big reason for Washington’s success as one of the league’s best quarterbacks early in the season.

In seven games, Daniels has completed a league-best 75.6% of his passes for 8.4 yards per attempt with six touchdowns and two interceptions. The Commanders rank fourth in the NFL with 384.1 yards per game and are tied with the Baltimore Ravens for the league lead with 31.1 points per game.

Williams has led the Bears to a 4-2 record. He’s completed 65.3% of his passes for 6.6 yards per attempt with nine touchdowns and five interceptions in six starts.

Lamar Jackson, Derrick Henry lead Ravens to massive, chaotic win over Joe Burrow, Bengals

Week 5 is a bit early for a playoff game, but it sure felt that way when the Baltimore Ravens squared off against the Cincinnati Bengals in what turned out to be a magnificent quarterbacks’ duel and 41-38 overtime win for Baltimore.

Week 5 is also a bit early for a referendum game, but it sure felt that way for Joe Burrow and the Bengals.

Week 5 is definitely a bit early for crowning the touchdown pass of the year, but Lamar Jackson may have pulled it off for the Baltimore Ravens.

Jackson appeared to have made a catastrophic overtime mistake, fumbling away a snap, but Cincinnati missed a winning field goal attempt, and Derrick Henry made the Bengals pay on the very next play with a 51-yard sprint that set up Baltimore’s walkoff field goal.

The instant-classic showdown began as a typical AFC North rock fight, but the second half turned into an Olympic sprint. The teams combined for an astounding six straight touchdowns to start the second half, then settled matters with a chaotic back-and-forth overtime.

The game began with a bit of history. On the Ravens’ first series, Henry rumbled into the end zone for his 100th career touchdown; he’s only the 27th player in NFL history to hit triple digits in touchdowns. Jackson later found Rashod Bateman to take a 14-7 lead midway through the second quarter.

But then the 2024 Bengals began to look more like the Bengals of yore — or the Tigers of Burrow’s college days at LSU. Cincinnati halted Henry in the end zone for a safety, then ran off another 15 unanswered points to take a 24-14 lead.

Burrow, who has effectively addressed all lingering injury concerns, delivered two highlight-reel passes in that run, starting with a 41-yard touchdown pass to Ja’Marr Chase:

He later found Andrei Iosivas in double coverage with a pinpoint rainbow that set up Burrow’s third touchdown pass, and second to Tee Higgins:

Also in the mix: a strange play where the officials wouldn’t let Cincinnati snap the ball … then dinged the Bengals for a delay-of-game penalty because they didn’t snap the ball.

The second half was a flat-out sprint, with the first six combined possessions ending in touchdowns, none smoother than Jackson’s brilliant disaster-to-glory touchdown pass with less than six minutes remaining in the game:

Burrow’s interception late in the fourth quarter ended the nothing-but-touchdowns second-half run at the worst possible time for Cincinnati. Fortunately for the Bengals, Jackson and the Ravens weren’t able to flip that into another touchdown; they managed to wrangle a 56-yard field goal from Justin Tucker to tie the game at 38-38.

Then came overtime, and Jackson’s crucial mistake. In Cincinnati territory and driving, the Ravens appeared primed to nail down a game-winning touchdown. But Jackson fumbled the snap, and Cincinnati played conservatively to set up a field goal … that Evan McPherson missed after a botched hold.

On the very next play, Henry stomped for 51 yards, setting up Tucker’s winner.

The loss spoiled what had been an outstanding day for Burrow. He threw for 392 yards and a career-high five touchdowns, but that fourth-quarter interception when the Bengals led by 3 allowed the Ravens to force overtime. Jackson, meanwhile, was 26 of 42 for 348 yards and four touchdowns, and the missed field goal meant his overtime fumble didn’t end up costing Baltimore the game. Henry carried the ball 15 yards for 92 yards.

Cincinnati is now in a world of trouble, at 1-4 and looking at a huge mountain to climb to get back into the playoff hunt. Baltimore, meanwhile, has resolved all concerns after its 0-2 start, with three straight wins and an offensive attack that’s clearly working to (near) perfection.

Looking ahead, the Ravens have the Battle of I-95 next week, facing off against Washington, followed by road games against Tampa Bay and Cleveland. Cincinnati, meanwhile, will have road games against the Giants and Cleveland before welcoming in the Eagles. By then, the identity of both of these teams will be a lot clearer, for better or worse.

Packers close preseason by beating Ravens 30-7 as both teams rest their top players

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The Green Bay Packers’ kicking competition is going down to the wire.

Greg Joseph improved his chances of unseating incumbent Anders Carlson by making a 55-yard field goal and a 36-yarder Saturday and the Packers beat the Baltimore Ravens 30-7 in a preseason finale without most of the starters from either team.

Carlson made a 54-yarder in the first quarter but pushed a 32-yarder wide right in the final period.

“We’ll wait and see,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said about the kicking competition after the game.

After Carlson struggled as a rookie last season, the Packers brought in Joseph to compete with him. Joseph has played for the Cleveland Browns (2018), Tennessee Titans (2019) and Minnesota Vikings (2021-23).

“I’ve controlled what I can control,” Joseph said. “Anything further, it’s no point in losing sleep over because it’s out of my control.”

Both teams rested their top players to make sure they stayed as healthy as possible for the start of the regular season. The Ravens still got some bad luck with running back Owen Wright breaking his foot and center Nick Samac also getting carted off the field.

Samac, a rookie seventh-round pick from Michigan State, had been getting some first-team reps in camp while 2023 Pro Bowler Tyler Linderbaum deals with a neck issue.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh expressed confidence after the game that Linderbaum and tight end Mark Andrews, who got hurt in a car accident last week, will be ready for the start of the regular season.

With most starters staying on the sidelines, this final exhibition game was a showcase for players attempting to win jobs. NFL teams are required to cut their rosters to 53 players by Tuesday.

Green Bay’s Arron Mosby made a case for himself by getting a strip-sack that resulted in a touchdown and intercepting a pass on consecutive series. Kristian Welch intercepted a pass for a second straight week. Ellis Merriweather, Nate McCrary and Emanuel Wilson combined for 190 yards rushing.

The Packers could need one of those running backs to contribute early on behind Josh Jacobs because AJ Dillon is dealing with a stinger and rookie third-round pick MarShawn Lloyd has a hamstring injury, leaving their status uncertain for the start of the season.

In the competition to back up Green Bay starting quarterback Jordan Love, Sean Clifford went 6 of 14 for 53 yards with a touchdown to Malik Heath. Rookie seventh-round pick Michael Pratt was 8 of 12 for 80 yards with a touchdown to Bo Melton and a pass that Baltimore’s Trenton Simpson intercepted.

“I think it’s similar to the kicking competition in terms of there were some really good moments and then there were some things we absolutely have to do better, and then we’ll evaluate everything that’s out there for us,” LaFleur said.

With reigning MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson resting, Baltimore’s Josh Johnson was 5 of 7 for 71 yards with a 48-yard touchdown completion to Tylan Wallace. Rookie sixth-round selection Devin Leary went 6 of 13 for 34 yards with two interceptions and a fumble.

Baltimore did play some potential starters on an offensive line that has undergone plenty of upheaval, with Andrew Vorhees at left guard, Daniel Faalele at right guard and Roger Rosengarten at right tackle. The Ravens lost guards Kevin Zeitler to the Detroit Lions and John Simpson to the New York Jets in free agency, and they traded right tackle Morgan Moses to the Jets.

The Ravens also started rookie cornerback Nate Wiggins, a first-round pick who had hurt his shoulder in Baltimore’s preseason opener and didn’t play against the Atlanta Falcons last week.

“He’s had a heck of a camp,” Harbaugh said. “He’s definitely everything we thought he was. Not that he can’t get better, because he can and I’m sure he will, because he works at it. He’s going to be counted on heavily this year for us.”

But the biggest plays were delivered by guys battling for those final roster spots.

Mosby, whose only three games of NFL experience came with Carolina in 2022, made the biggest play when he sacked Leary and knocked the ball backward. Anthony Johnson Jr. recovered the fumble at the Baltimore 24 — 28 yards behind the line of scrimmage — and raced into the end zone.

On Baltimore’s next series, Mosby intercepted Leary’s pass.

Now he waits to see if he did enough to make the team.

“You never know how these 72 hours go,” Mosby said. “If it’s here or somewhere else, you’ve always got to be ready.”
