Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels will start on Sunday against the Chicago Bears.

Head coach Dan Quinn told CBS’ Tracy Wolfson on Sunday that Daniels will start barring a setback in pregame warmups. The Commanders then listed him as active prior to kickoff.

Daniels has been dealing with a rib injury. He suffered the injury early last week against the Carolina Panthers. Backup quarterback Marcus Mariota finished the 40-7 Commanders win in relief. Quinn previously said that Daniels was considered a game-time decision against Chicago.

Daniels’ availability ensures a highly anticipated matchup featuring the top two picks in this year’s NFL Draft. The Bears selected Williams first overall, and Washington took Daniels with the No. 2 pick.

Both players have experienced early success in their careers and led their teams to winning records. Washington enters Sunday’s game at 5-2 and in first place in the NFC East. Daniels is a big reason for Washington’s success as one of the league’s best quarterbacks early in the season.

In seven games, Daniels has completed a league-best 75.6% of his passes for 8.4 yards per attempt with six touchdowns and two interceptions. The Commanders rank fourth in the NFL with 384.1 yards per game and are tied with the Baltimore Ravens for the league lead with 31.1 points per game.

Williams has led the Bears to a 4-2 record. He’s completed 65.3% of his passes for 6.6 yards per attempt with nine touchdowns and five interceptions in six starts.

Bears improve to 3-2 with rout of Panthers

After the Panthers (1-4) took an early 7-0 lead, the Bears answered as Williams capped a 7-play, 70-yard drive with a 34-yard touchdown pass to Moore, tying the score 7-7. Williams completed 3 of 3 passes for 48 yards and Swift rushed for 22 yards on four carries on the possession.

Roschon Johnson’s 1-yard TD run gave the Bears a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter. The score capped a 13-play, 80-yard drive that was highlighted by Williams’ 26-yard pass to Moore and Swift’s 18-yard run.

The Bears defense generated its first takeaway of the game as Jaquan Brisker blasted tight end Tommy Tremble after a 9-yard reception, forcing a fumble that Gervon Dexter Sr. recovered at the Panthers’ 44.

On the next play, Swift caught a screen pass from Williams and weaved through the defense for 42 yards to the Carolina 2. Two plays later, Swift’s 1-yard TD run increased the Bears’ lead to 21-7 with 2:14 remaining in the half.

Williams followed with a beautiful 30-yard TD pass to Moore, who leaped over cornerback Mike Jackson with :24 to play in the half. Cairo Santos missed the extra point attempt, but the Bears led 27-7.

The Panthers were in position to score on the subsequent drive, but Eddy Piñeiro missed a 45-yard field goal attempt wide left on the final play of the first half.

In the first half, Williams completed 11 of 15 passes for 200 yards with two TDs and a 154.9 passer rating. Swift rushed for 67 yards and one TD on 15 carries and caught one pass for 42 yards. Moore had three receptions for 87 yards and two TDs.

The Bears defense recorded its second takeaway early in the third quarter as Kevin Byard III intercepted a deep Andy Dalton pass.

Santos’ 33-yard field goal increased the Bears’ lead to 30-7 midway through the third period. The kick came after Williams’ apparent 1-yard TD scramble was nullified by a clipping penalty on Doug Kramer Jr.

Piñeiro’s 27-yard field goal cut the deficit to 30-10 with 2:10 left in the third quarter.

The defense produced its third takeaway of the game as Tremaine Edmunds stripped the ball from Hubbard after a 2-yard reception and Kyler Gordon recovered at the Panthers’ 18. The Bears converted the turnover into Johnson’s 1-yard TD run, increasing their lead to 36-10 with 4:23 to play.

“I was really proud of the guys that recovered those fumbles,” Eberflus said. “To get a recovered fumble you have to be husting the way we do it. It just doesn’t show up because we expect everybody to punch at the ball and when the ball comes out, that person’s hustling because he anticipated that ball was going to be there. It doesn’t happen but a couple times a game, so you have to be going, and I’m proud of the guys that way.”

The Bears will look for their third straight victory next Sunday when they face the Jaguars at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

Bears play complementary football in win over Rams

Joshua Karty field goals of 46 and 37 yards on the Rams’ first two possessions of the game gave them a 6-0 lead. Los Angeles settled for the first kick after Gervon Dexter Sr. sacked Stafford for an eight-yard loss.

Stafford completed 20 of 29 passes for 224 yards but committed two turnovers. The first was instrumental in giving the Bears a lead they would not relinquish.

Late in the first quarter, Montez Sweat sacked Stafford, causing a fumble that was recovered by Kyler Gordon at the Rams’ 16.

On third-and-9 from the 15, Keenan Allen drew a pass interference penalty on cornerback Tre’Davious White in the end zone, giving the Bears the ball at the 1.

With Williams under center and reserve center Doug Kramer Jr. lined up at fullback, Roschon Johnson thundered up the middle for a 1-yard touchdown run that gave the Bears a 7-6 lead with 5:42 remaining in the second quarter.

The Rams were in position to retake the lead, but Karty’s 43-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left with 1:01 to play in the first half.

Swift then turned a screen pass into a 27-yard gain, setting up Cairo Santos’ 40-yard field goal, which increased the Bears’ lead to 10-6 with :09 left in the half.

The Rams marched the length of the field on the opening possession of the second half, but the Bears defense stiffened inside the 10, forcing Los Angeles to settle for Karty’s 25-yard field goal, closing the gap to 10-9.

The Bears offense followed with its best drive of the game, covering 74 yards in 12 plays, capped by Williams’ 9-yard TD strike to DJ Moore on third-and-5. The score increased the Bears’ lead to 17-9 with 2:37 remaining in the third quarter.

The Rams responded with a six-play, 70-yard drive that culminated in running back Kyren Williams’ 3-yard touchdown run. But Stafford was unable to complete the subsequent two-point conversion pass, preserving the Bears’ 17-15 lead.

The Bears followed with their second straight touchdown on Swift’s 36-yard scamper up the middle, widening the margin to 24-15 with 12:26 to play.

Karty then made it a one-score game at 24-18 with a 52-yard field goal with 8:47 remaining. But the Rams never threatened again, with Taylor’s pinpoint punts and Brisker’s late interception clinching the victory.

With the win, the Bears improved to 2-2 and will host the Panthers next Sunday at Soldier Field. Carolina fell to 1-3 with Sunday’s 34-24 home loss to the Bengals.

Who are the announcers and referees for the Rams vs. the Bears today?

As September 2024 comes to a close, the LA Rams and Rams fans are more than happy to put this month behind them. After all, the Rams are struggling to find durability and success so far in the early weeks of the new NFL season. And perhaps, as the calendar turns to October, both the team and cheering fans will find more of both in the weeks ahead.

In Week 4, it’s the LA Rams (1-2) visiting the Chicago Bears (1-2). The winner of this game takes a huge step towards getting back on track to salvage their season. The loser of this game falls to a record of 1-3, and will find a much steeper climb to realize any hopes of postseason competition.

This is a game of two nearly opposite teams. The Rams enter with a veteran offense, and a young defense that is trying to find and establish its identity. The Chicago Bears enter with a veteran defense, and a young offense that is trying to find and establish its identity. And with the game being played at 10:00 am PT, you might give the home field advantage nod to the Bears.

Well, windy conditions at Soldier Field may actually work in the Rams favor today. That could prove to be rather important as the game plays on.

It’s Deja Vu all over again. The same crew that covered the Cardinals vs Rams in Week 2 and the Rams vs 49ers in Week 3 is back again. Is the third time the charm? While the Rams certainly played poorly in Week 2, they managed to put up a miraculous victory in Week 3. So perhaps the same broadcast crew can help the team to find another win?

Head Referee: Brad Rogers

The Head Referee in this game is Brad Rogers, a veteran of 6 years of NFL officiating. Rogers crew has been getting plenty of work so far this season. The crew opened the season by calling the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Atlanta Falcons game. In Week 2, they handled the Los Angeles Chargers at Carolina Panthers game. In Week 3, it was off to officiate the Detroit Lions vs. the Arizona Cardinals. This week, the crew must call the LA Rams vs. the Chicago Bears.

While an early start, the LA Rams have to feel a bit more confident in Week 4. After making some strategic changes to both the offense and the defense, the Rams certainly seemed to play a more complete game in Week 3.

Look for similar changes implemented last week t carry over into Week 4. The Rams have many reasons to lean into their 12-personnel package this week, as well as go with a bigger bodied defensive front. I would love to see the team finally get rookie running back Blake Corum involved, if only for one offensive series, and even to use more tight ends in the passing game as legitimate targets.

The Rams need a win this week. But the same can be said of the Chicago Bears. Perhaps in the end, it will come down to which team wants the victory more.

As always, thanks for reading.

Fast Start Fuels No. 22/22 BYU Past Bears

By Jerry Hill
Baylor Bear Insider

WACO, Texas — Digging an early hole, Baylor football couldn’t overcome a 21-point first-quarter deficit and fell to the 22nd-ranked BYU Cougars, 34-28, Saturday afternoon at McLane Stadium.

The Bears twice had chances to take the lead, but they turned it over on downs at the Cougars’ 25 after a first-career interception by defensive lineman Elinus Noel III and then safety Crew Wakley picked off a Sawyer Robertson pass intended for receiver Ashtyn Hawkins

In a career performance, Robertson completed 27-of-48 passes for 324 yards and three touchdowns and also scored on a 20-yard TD run. But he was also picked off twice and was sacked three times for 30 yards in losses.

BYU (5-0, 2-0) quarterback Jake Retzlaff threw for 216 yards and two touchdowns and added 53 yards and another score on the ground to account for the bulk of the Cougars’ 367 yards total offense. Darius Lassiter caught eight passes for 120 yards, including a 44-yard TD grab.

For the Bears (2-3, 0-2), Josh Cameron also had a breakout game with seven catches for a career-high 125 yards and two touchdowns.

Facing a 31-14 deficit at the half, Baylor came back with a 15-yard TD pass from Robertson to Ashtyn Hawkins in the third quarter and then pulled within a single score when Cameron hauled in a 23-yarder with 10:07 left in the game.

Scoring on each of its first four possessions, BYU jumped out to a 28-7 lead in the first 21 minutes of an opening half that saw the Cougars outgain the Bears, 286-216, and dominate time of possession, 17:59-12:01.

Retzlaff had touchdown passes of 26 yards to Miles Davis and a perfect 44-yard strike to Lassiter and also scored on a 17-yard run. BYU’s other score, a two-yard run by Chase Roberts, came after a batted interception by defensive tackle Blake Mangelson on Baylor’s first offensive play of the game.

The offense put together a nice drive, moving from its own 25 down to the Cougars’ 29, but linebacker Isaiah Glasker dropped Bryson Washington for a two-yard loss on fourth-and-one for a turnover on downs.

Trailing 21-0, Baylor got on the board late in the first quarter when Robertson scored on a 20-yard keeper on another fourth-and-one play, somehow leaping and squeezing between two players to get free up the middle. That capped off an eight-play, 80-yard drive that took 3 ½ minutes off the clock.

The Bears scored again on a one-yard TD pass from Robertson to Cameron with 2:12 left in the half, but Will Ferrin padded BYU’s lead with a 54-yard field goal before freshman Connor Hawkins missed his first career field goal attempt from 50 on the last play of the half.

Baylor will go back on the road to face 18th-ranked Iowa State (3-0, 0-0) at 6:30 p.m. next Saturday, Oct. 5, at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames. The Cyclones are playing at Houston Saturday night.

Bears see improvement in Caleb Williams’ performance, but it comes in a 21-16 loss to Colts

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams produced promising numbers in his third career NFL start.

They came with a disappointingly familiar result Sunday for Chicago.

While the No. 1 overall draft topped the 300-yard mark for the first time and got the Bears into the end zone twice with the first two TD passes of his pro career, Williams could not complete a fourth-quarter comeback attempt at Indianapolis, suffering his second straight defeat.

But Williams remains optimistic.

“Got our first two passing touchdowns of the year, which obviously feels good,” Williams said. “I think the offensive identity is brewing. I think it’s a lot closer than it was the week before or weeks before, I think it’s right there. I think we were one small detail away on a lot of these plays and that includes me.”

After last Sunday’s loss at Houston, the bruised and battered Williams hobbled off the field so sore that the effects were lingering three days later.

This time, he walked off the field, quickly passing people, his chin pointed up and with a look that said he was ready to start all over next week against the Los Angeles Rams.

The primary problem, so far, for the Bears (1-2) continues to be pass protection.

While Williams was a solid 33 of 52 for 363 yards, all career bests, and finished with a passer rating of 80.8 — more than double Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson’s 39.0 — the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner spent most of the game operating on the run. Again.

The result: Williams threw two interceptions, lost a fumble, had a halftime heave batted down in the end zone while getting sacked four times, hit a total of seven times and harangued into a series of throwaways including on a 2-point conversion pass that would have cut a 14-9 deficit to three.

A fourth-quarter strip-sack led to Jonathan Taylor’s second scoring run of the day, a 1-yard plunge with 5:21 to play, that made it 21-9 and essentially sealed Chicago’s fate despite Williams throwing for the most yards in an NFL game this season.

It was that kind of day again for the Bears — as it has been for much of the first three games.

“The quick game was there. When we needed to throw the ball down the field, we could,” said receiver DJ Moore, who had eight catches for 78 yards and 9.78 per catch. “When you look past the turnovers and the penalties, you can start to see the offense coming alive.”

Clearly, though, Williams needs more help.

Chicago only rushed for 63 yards and was thrown for a 12-yard loss on fourth-and-goal from the Colts 1-yard line in the first half — against a run defense that started Week 3 yielding a league-worst 237.0 yards per game.

With Matt Pryor replacing injured right guard Nate Davis in the starting lineup and left tackle Braxton Jones leaving briefly in the first half after appearing to hurt his right leg, the Bears’ offensive line again struggled to keep Williams upright.

And yet Williams still held up relatively well.

“I was pleased with the distribution of the football by Caleb,” coach Matt Eberflus said. “That allowed the receivers to have confidence. I thought we were committed to the run. I’m proud of the way the defense played. But the most important thing is winning.”

Bears fall to Texans on Sunday Night Football

Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud completed 23 of 36 passes for 260 yards with one TD, no turnovers and a 94.7 passer rating. Nico Collins led Houston in receiving with eight catches for 135 yards and his team’s only TD on a 28-yard reception.

The Texans took a 3-0 lead on the game’s opening possession on Fairbairn’s 56-yard field goal. The drive was sustained by Stroud’s 8-yard pass to running back Joe Mixon on third-and-6.

The Bears answered, tying the score 3-3 on Santos’ 53-yard field goal. Williams completed 5 of 5 passes for 55 yards on the possession, including a 14-yard laser beam to receiver DeAndre Carter on the right sideline on third-and-12.

The Texans retook a 10-3 lead on Stroud’s TD pass to Collins on second-and-24 on the first play of the second quarter. It came one snap after Collins had drawn a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for hitting cornerback Tyrique Stevenson in the facemask.

Stroud was 4 of 4 for 70 yards on the drive, including an 18-yard completion to tight end Cade Stover on a play-action pass on fourth-and-1 from the 50.

After the Bears went three-and-out, the Texans increased their lead to 13-3 on Fairbairn’s 47-yard field goal. The drive was sustained by Stroud’s 21-yard pass to receiver Stefon Diggs on third-and-10 from the Houston 23.

The Bears later scored their first offensive touchdown of the season on Herbert’s 2-yard run, cutting the deficit to 13-10 with :32 left in the half. The TD came after receiver Carter drew a pass interference penalty on safety Calen Bullock at the Texans’ 6 on a third-and-14 play from the 30.

Fairbairn’s 59-yard field goal widened the margin to 16-10 with :01 left in the half. The kick was set up by Stroud’s 16-yard pass to Collins along the sideline.

Both teams punted on their first three possessions of the second half before Williams committed the first turnover of the game when his long pass intended for DJ Moore was intercepted by cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. at the Houston 34.

The Texans converted the takeaway into Fairbairn’s 53-yard field goal, widening the margin to 19-10 with 13:39 left in the fourth quarter.

Williams was then intercepted on a second straight drive when his pass intended for Cole Kmet was picked off by cornerback Kamari Lassiter.

The Texans reached the Bears’ 4. But on first-and-goal, Andrew Billings forced running back Cam Akers to fumble, and Kevin Byard III recovered at the 3.

Converting the takeaway, Santos made it a one-score game at 19-13 with a 54-yard field goal with 2:51 remaining. But the Bears were unable to complete the rally.

“We didn’t execute the way we needed to,” Williams said. “We’re going to keep getting better. Everything is about the response. It’s Week 2. I’m a young guy, but I understand it’s a long season. I understand that it’s Week 2, understanding that we’re going to respond and get better every day.”

Bears vs. Titans odds, line, start time: 2024 NFL picks, Week 1 predictions from proven computer model

The Chicago Bears and Tennessee Titans will meet for the first time since 2020 when they square off on Sunday afternoon during the Week 1 NFL schedule. Chicago is debuting No. 1 draft pick Caleb Williams, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2022 and is a highly regarded prospect. Tennessee is entering its first season under head coach Brian Callahan, who spent the last five years as Cincinnati’s offensive coordinator. The Titans own a 7-6 lead in the all-time series between these teams, picking up a 24-17 win in 2020.

Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Sunday at Soldier Field. The Bears are favored by 4 points in the latest Bears vs. Titans odds, while the over/under is 44 points via SportsLine consensus. Before entering any Titans vs. Bears picks, you’ll want to see the NFL predictions from the proven computer model at SportsLine.

The model, which simulates every NFL game 10,000 times, is up well over $7,000 for $100 players on top-rated NFL picks since its inception. The model enters Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season on an incredible 181-129 run on top-rated NFL picks that dates back to the 2017 season. It is also on a 35-21 roll on top-rated NFL picks since Week 7 of 2022.

The model also ranked in the top 10 on NFLPickWatch four of the past six years on straight-up NFL picks and beat more than 94% of CBS Sports Football Pick’em players four times during that span. Anyone who has followed it is way up.

The model has set its sights on Tennessee-Chicago. You can head to SportsLine to see its picks. Here are several NFL betting lines for spread, money line and over/under:

  • Bears vs. Titans over/under: 44 points
  • Bears vs. Titans money line: Bears -193, Titans +162

Why the Bears can cover

Chicago is entering its third season under head coach Matt Eberflus with high expectations after jumping from four wins in 2022 to seven wins in 2023. The Bears are prepared to take another step forward this season, as Williams rounds out a talented offense. He threw for 8,170 yards and 72 touchdowns while rushing for 21 more in two seasons at USC.

The Bears ranked second in rushing yards per game (141.1) last season, but they are going to be a balanced attack this season with wide receivers DJ Moore, Keenan Allen and Rome Odunze playing alongside Williams. Defensively, Chicago led the league in rushing yards allowed per game (86.4) and tied for the lead with 22 interceptions. The Bears covered the spread in five of their final seven games last season and are riding a five-game home winning streak. See which team to pick here.

Why the Titans can cover

There is a lot of hype surrounding the Bears heading into the season, which makes this a potential letdown spot with a rookie quarterback. The last 15 rookie quarterbacks drafted with the No. 1 overall pick went a combined 0-14-1 in their first starts, dating back to 2003. Chicago has a 10-24 record in its first two seasons under head coach Matt Eberflus, so the Bears are a difficult team to trust as favorites.

Tennessee is set to improve offensively after hiring Callahan from the Bengals, especially since the Titans showed positive signs last season. Quarterback Will Levis returns, along with wide receivers DeAndre Hopkins, Calvin Ridley, Tyler Boyd and Treylon Burks. The Titans are 4-1 in their last five trips to Chicago. See which team to pick here.

How to make Bears vs. Titans picks

The model has simulated Titans vs. Bears 10,000 times and the results are in. The model is leaning Under, and it’s also generated a point-spread pick that is hitting in almost 60% of simulations. You can only see the pick at SportsLine.

So who wins Chicago vs. Tennessee on Sunday, and which side of the spread hits nearly 60% of the time? Visit SportsLine right now to see which side of the Titans vs. Bears spread you should be all over Sunday, all from the model on an 181-129 roll on its top-rated NFL picks, and find out.
