1. The Run Game

Kyron Drones and Bhayshul Tuten had big games rushing the football. Drones opened the game by rushing for an 11-yard touchdown on his first series and finished the first half with two rushing touchdowns, his first multi-rush touchdown game since Pitt a season ago. Tuten had his longest career run of 83 yards for a touchdown to start the 2nd quarter and extended his streak of scoring at least one rushing touchdown a game to nine. Tuten now owns the Virginia Tech single-game record for rushing yards.

2. The Defense

On the first drive, Virginia Tech got a three and out, followed it up the next with a forced fumble from defensive lineman Kelvin Gilliam Jr. The defense held Boston College scoreless in the first quarter and forced a fumble to start the second. This continued to be the story as the Hokies forced five fumbles for the evening. The defense began the second half by giving up three straight scoring drives and eventually got back in rhythm in the 4th quarter. Antwaun Powell-Ryland had an amazing night, finishing with four sacks.

3. Very Efficient First Half

The Hokies were able to move the ball and get stops efficiently in the first half, only allowing 134 yards of total offense from Boston College and gaining 332 yards of total offense. The defense forced four fumbles in the first half and the offense had it going on both the ground and in the air, Kyron Drones passed for 164 yards and a touchdown.

4. Second Half Woes (especially the 3rd quarter)

The team started the 3rd quarter scoreless on offense and allowed a three-yard touchdown run on defense to open up the 2nd half. This season, we’ve seen this be an ongoing problem for the Hokies whether it be the first or second half, the team just can’t put together a complete and good game for all four quarters.

5. Bhayshul Tuten

Bhayshul Tuten continues to lead the way for this Virginia Tech Hokies team, with the way he continues to be a duo threat on offense. Tuten can both catch and run which we saw on display tonight, he ran for 266 yards, three rushing touchdowns, and one reception for a 20-yard receiving touchdown. The more versatility that Tuten continues to show, the more his draft stock and Heisman ranking will continue to rise. Tuten also finished the game with the most rushing yards in Virginia Tech Football history.

BOSTON — Luis Tiant, the charismatic Cuban with a horseshoe mustache and mesmerizing windup who pitched the Red Sox to the brink of a World Series championship and pitched himself to the doorstep of the baseball Hall of Fame, has died. He was 83.

Major League Baseball announced his death in a post on X on Tuesday, and the Red Sox confirmed that he died at his home in Maine.

“Today is a very sad day,” Fred Lynn, a teammate in both Boston and California, posted on X. “A Big game pitcher, a funny genuine guy who loved his family and baseball. I miss him already.”

With a swaggering style and an iconic wiggling windup that froze batters in the box, “El Tiante” was a three-time All-Star and four-time 20-game winner whose greatest individual season came with Cleveland in 1968, when he went 21-9 with 19 complete games and nine shutouts — four of them in a row. His 1.60 ERA was the best in the AL in half a century and he finished fifth in AL Most Valuable Player voting; 31-game winner Denny McLain won it, as well as the league’s Cy Young Award.

Those performances, along with Bob Gibson’s 1.12 ERA in the NL, earned 1968 the nickname “Year of the Pitcher” and helped persuade baseball to lower the pitching mound to give batters more of a chance. No matter, Tiant again won the AL ERA title with a 1.91 mark in 1972, for the Red Sox (and lost the Cy Young to Gaylord Perry’s 1.92 ERA and 24 wins).

“Luis embodied everything we love about this game: resilience, passion, and an undeniable sense of belonging to something greater than himself,” Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner said. “But what made Luis unforgettable was his vibrant personality. He was a gifted storyteller, always sharing tales filled with humor, honesty, and an enduring loyalty to his teammates. All of us are deeply saddened by his passing. We lost one of the great ones today.”

The son of a Negro Leagues star, the younger Tiant was 229-172 in all with a 3.30 ERA and 2,416 strikeouts. He had 187 complete games and 47 shutouts in a 19-year career spent mostly with Cleveland and the Red Sox.

His death comes one week after that of all-time baseball hits leader Pete Rose, whose Cincinnati Reds faced Tiant’s Red Sox in the 1975 World Series — still considered one of the greatest matchups in baseball postseason history.

Tiant shut out the Reds in Game 1, threw 155 pitches in another complete game victory in Game 4 and was back on the mound for eight innings in Game 6, which Boston won on Carlton Fisk’s home run in the bottom of the 12th. The ’75 Series, which Cincinnati won in seven games, is often cited as the greatest of all time.

It was also a national coming-out party for Tiant’s distinctive delivery, in which he would wiggle his hands as he came to the set position, then turn his back to the batter before throwing. The motion would be imitated by generations of children in New England and across the country, but Tiant himself was unmatched.

“Luis had the kind of unforgettable presence that made you feel like you were part of his world,” Red Sox owner John Henry said. “He channeled everything into his love for the game and the people around him. He was magnetic and had a smile that could light up Fenway Park.”

After he retired in 1982, Tiant worked as a minor league coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox and was the pitching coach for Nicaragua at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He remained active with the Red Sox in spring training and was visible around Fenway Park, often signing autographs before the game at the ballpark’s El Tiante Cuban sandwich stand.

Tiant was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame but never made the national shrine in Cooperstown, New York, receiving a high of 30.9% of the votes in 1988, his first year on the ballot. He was also considered and rejected by veterans committees three times.

“Tough day to hear of Luis Tiant passing away. A former player we loved coming into the clubhouse,” former Red Sox infielder Kevin Youkilis tweeted. “Always joking around with that infectious laugh and saying ‘Man you a sick puppy!’ Forever grateful for the time shared with a legend. May his memory be a blessing!”

Patriots’ Jabrill Peppers arrested on assault charges – NBC Boston

New England Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers was arrested early Saturday morning on multiple charges, including assault.

Braintree police said they responded to a disturbance at a residential address early Saturday morning. The caller indicated that there was an altercation between two people.

An investigation ensued, and they said Peppers, 29, was arrested. Police said he will be charged with assault and battery on an intimate partner, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, strangulation and possession of cocaine.

According to a police report, the victim told police that Peppers smashed her head against the wall and pushed her down the stairs. She also had reported over the phone to dispatchers that he had “choked her at least six times.”

The woman told police Peppers became upset when someone called her phone while they were having sex. She says he pushed her down the steps, grabbed her neck and smashed it against a wall.

Police said the woman declined medical help.

Peppers denied the woman’s account, saying she fell down the stairs while intoxicated.

He also told police he believed she was making the allegations to destroy his career. Police noted they did not notice signs that the victim was drunk when they interacted with her.

The victim was treated by emergency medical services at the scene. No information on their condition was released.

Peppers appeared in Quincy District Court for a brief arraignment hearing on Monday morning. Not guilty pleas were entered on all counts, and he was ordered to not have any contact with the alleged victim.

His attorney said in court that Peppers did not object to the condition, despite there being evidence that casts doubt on the allegations.

Peppers posted a $2,500 bail on the charges. His next court appearance will be Nov. 22, but his appearance is waived.

He is a team captain but did not play in Sunday’s loss to the Miami Dolphins due to a shoulder injury. The 29-year-old plays safety for the Patriots and is a New Jersey native. This is his third season in New England, after three seasons with the New York Giants and two with the Cleveland Browns.

The Patriots issued a statement about the situation on Monday morning.

“We are aware of an incident involving Jabrill Peppers over the weekend in which the police are currently investigating. We will have no further comment at this time,” the statement said.

Score prediction/analysis for Florida State versus Boston College

Florida State football is back in the friendly confines of Doak Campbell Stadium as the Seminoles are coming off their tough loss to Georgia Tech in their season opener in Dublin, Ireland.

This is certainly not the start that the Seminoles wanted as the program was projected to win the conference in the preseason, according to the Vegas oddsmakers.

Florida State will be trying to bounce back versus Boston College, which the Seminoles struggled with in the fourth quarter during the 2023 meeting. Florida State led by a score of 31-10 late in the third quarter where it finished as a 31-29 ball game with Seminole fans sitting on the edge of their seats.

Florida State’s defense struggled to bottle up Georgia Tech’s rushing attack where it accumulated 190 rushing yards. To make matters worse, Boston College quarterback Thomas Castellanos had 305 passing yards and 95 rushing yards last year.

The offense returns playmakers such as running back Kye Robinchaux (780 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns in 2023) and wide receiver Lewis Bond (646 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns). Much like Georgia Tech, Boston College wants to run the football where they ranked 13th in the FBS in rushing yards per game (198.8).

The Seminoles’ defensive effort cannot be much worse than last week as Georgia Tech could get anything they wanted offensively. The biggest factor is: Will Florida State’s defense be able to come up in run support?

As it pertains to the offense, head football coach Mike Norvell took the blame for what transpired on Saturday’s loss. Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei did not do anything special in the loss where he had 194 passing yards with zero touchdowns and zero interceptions. The offense consistently tried to establish the running game, but, after the first drive, the Yellow Jackets’ defense contained it.

The ChopChat staff is ready for their score predictions to be featured. It looks like everyone feels like the Seminoles will be victorious on Labor Day Night. I hope that this result generates momentum for the rest of the 2024 season.

Talking Florida State vs Boston College Football with Tomahawk Nation’s Perry Kostidakis

It’s nearly time for BC’s first game of the season. On Monday, they’ll have a shot of beating Florida State and handing the Seminoles their second loss of the year. Huge thank you to Perry Kostidakis of Tomahawk Nation for answering a few of our questions about FSU!

Last weekend was rough for Florida State fans. Losing overseas as a top-10 team to an unranked conference opponent in a primetime game is certainly not the way you guys wanted to start 2024. What are the feelings around the fanbase like right now?

PK: Saturday felt like a crash to earth, since FSU hadn’t lost a regular season game since beating Georgia Tech back in 2022. The grieving process has gone its regular route — denial (no way that FSU just blew a game on a national stage after this entire past year), anger (THEY ONLY HAD ONE POSSESSION IN THE FOURTH?!), bargaining (okay, so at least if Miami or UF look awful next week, it’ll be okay), depression (I cannot believe I predicted 11-1), and acceptance (welp).

The point the fanbase is at now is whether Saturday was the default or a slip-up. It’s obvious that Georgia Tech is better than expected, but it remains to be seen if FSU is worse than believed. Was the inefficiency on both offense and defense a result of a well-planned and well-executed Yellow Jackets approach, or will it be a long year for a Seminoles squad unable to make any sort of impact in the trenches? Right now, it feels like mainly column A, with a sprinkle of column B.

I understand that there’s already been some talk among FSU fans about replacing DJU. Do you think most people want to see him remain the starter and do you think he’ll remain the starter all year?

PK: I do think that he’s going to remain in place as QB1, barring a complete meltdown or play that actually hurts his team. He wasn’t particularly stunning in the loss, but really he didn’t do anything that actively hurt the team’s chances at winning — and when Norvell let the offense loose, they did manage to get a touchdown. The issue was a lack of sustained drives, brought on by a disappointing performance in the run game (an area where FSU was supposed to excel and lean on in 2024).

If you were to single out one aspect of the Seminoles’ game that they do better than anyone else, what would it be and why?

PK: Really, at this point, I’d have to say special teams. It sounds depressing, and it kinda is, but FSU might actually have one of the best kicker-punter combinations in college football. Alex Mastromanno legitimately can win games by flipping the field, and Ryan Fitzgerald has elevated himself to a clutch kicker capable of hitting 50-plus yarders routinely.

Which players are your x-factor for the FSU-BC game?

PK: On the Eagles’ side, it’s Thomas Castellanos. He was an absolute terror last year and, after seeing how much FSU struggled in keeping contain against GT, he’s going to be a nightmare.

For FSU, I’m going with Pat Payton — the defensive end was pinpointed as one of the key parts of Florida State’s defense this year, but failed to make a major impact in the season-opener alongside his teammates in the trenches. If he’s able to get going and push the rest of the line along with him, the difference in attack will be huge.

How would you define a successful season for the Seminoles after the way it started?

PK: Most FSU fans have attempted to cope with the loss — and a potential follow-up to Boston College — by pinpointing the 1989 season. After an 0-2 start FSU ran the table to finish 10-2, winning the Fiesta Bowl and finishing No. 3. While looking at what a team 35 years ago did isn’t exactly the soundest science, in the new era of the College Football Playoff, your season isn’t over until you really mess it up. Norvell’s teams have shown an ability to shake off disappointments and turn seasons around. Any fantasies of pummeling through the ACC with a BIG-style offense have pretty much faltered away, but a 10-2, 9-3 season is still a success especially if it is enough to push the Seminoles into the dance.

BOSTON – Gordon Hayward, who spent three seasons with the Celtics after signing a large contract in free agency, announced his retirement on Thursday.

Hayward averaged just over 15 points per game for his career after being drafted by Utah out of Butler in 2010.

In 2017, Hayward signed a 4-year, $128 million deal to play in Boston. The Celtics planned to jumpstart their rebuild by pairing Hayward with Kyrie Irving, who they traded for in the same offseason.

Instead, Hayward suffered a gruesome ankle injury just minutes into his first regular season game with the Celtics and was forced to miss the entire season.

Hayward played two more years with the Celtics before going to the Charlotte Hornets in a sign-and-trade deal.

The 34-year-old released a statement announcing his decision.

“Today, I am officially retiring from the game of Basketball. It’s been an incredible ride and I’m so grateful to everyone who helped me achieve more than I ever imagined,” he said.

“As I move to spend more time with my family as a father and husband, I look forward to new adventures and challenges, taking with me the lessons I’ve learned on the court that will guide me across my next chapters, both in business and in life,” Hayward added.

While playing at Butler University, Hayward nearly led the Bulldogs to a miraculous upset over Duke in the 2010 national championship game. Hayward’s heave from halfcourt bounced off the rim, and the Blue Devils held on to win.
