The Houston Texans (5-2) will battle the Indianapolis Colts (4-3) on Sunday in Week 8 at NRG Stadium for bragging rights in the AFC South. The Colts have been a thorn in the Texans’ side for years, especially when Pro Bowl running Jonathan Taylor starts to pick up steam.

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins was a surprise late addition to the final injury report in Week 8 before kickoff against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Missing Higgins would be a major blow for the Bengals offense as they look to get back to .500, considering he was a key catalyst in the offense’s revival over the last few weeks — after he returned from a different injury.

Here’s the latest.

 

Tee Higgins injury update

  • Final Update: Tee Higgins will be inactive, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
  • Update: According to Kelsey Conway of the Cincinnati Enquirer, “it doesn’t look good” for Higgins’ chances to play.
  • Higgins appeared on the injury report with a quad injury on Friday, throwing his status into doubt.
  • A report from ESPN’s Dan Graziano on Saturday night said there is “pessimism” around Higgins’ chances of playing.

 

How long will Tee Higgins be out?

Hard to say. Soft-tissue issues, usually the hamstrings, have chased him throughout his career. But the fact this popped on a Friday pretty much guarantees he’s on a snap count Sunday — and the week after could be in jeopardy too. No longer than four games though, otherwise he’d be on injured reserve.

The Cincinnati Bengals will need to break a trend in Week 7 by stealing a road win against the Cleveland Browns.

Should Joe Burrow and the Bengals make that happen, they would move the needle on the season to 3-4. Lose, and 2-5 effectively ends everything.

But the Bengals haven’t done that since 2017 — and Burrow never has.

Normally, the way Burrow’s offense has played lately would be a major reason for hope this time. He had an MVPish stretch for a trio of games and has settled on a 71.6 completion percentage with 1,578 yards and 12 touchdowns against just two interceptions. Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins have played great and Chase Brown averages 5.5 yards per carry in the backfield.

But the defense is a cause for concern. The unit looked better in a Week 6 win over the New York Giants as players like Sheldon Rankins got healthy. But the process has been slow, with a serious lack of pass rush and fundamentals like proper angles causing issues.

And the offense is now a concern, too. What has been the best line of Burrow’s career to date collapsed against the Giants, a team that sports about as AFC North-like front seven as one can possibly be. Now, the task is asking that same offensive line to rebound against the likes of Myles Garrett.

The saving grace could be the Browns offense. Cleveland is, after all, a 1-5 team for a reason. Deshaun Watson has been a disaster again, this time throwing just five scores and three picks over six games while averaging just 5.1 yards per attempt. The front office just traded Amari Cooper away. Browns star running back Nick Chubb will return, but on an unknown snap count. Still, it could open up the offense some.

But at this point, all Bengals fans can do is hope that the defense has learned from the past six weeks and will continue to gel now that this is the healthiest it has been all season, minus the loss of Dax Hill.

From a broader perspective, this is one of the most lopsided quarterback matchups of the week, if not possible in the NFL right now. The Browns have played a handful of their recent losses close, but expect Burrow to bail out the Bengals late in a close one.

The excellence of Shohei Ohtani could be summed by in one sentence: he couldn’t pitch in 2024, so he decided to steal nearly 60 bases. 

Ohtani has flashed a little bit of speed throughout his career, but it isn’t a coincidence that he recorded 59 stolen bases this season to shatter his previous high of 26. The former and future MVP evidently made a conscious effort to wreak havoc on the basepaths, and the uptick in steals can’t just be attributed to MLB rule changes — he only stole 20 bases in 2023, when the changes were implemented.

The shift in approach made Ohtani the first player in MLB history to post a 50-50 season, putting him on track for his third MVP award and first in the National League.

How fast is Shohei Ohtani?

Ohtani averaged a sprint speed of 28.1 mph this season, ranking 152nd out of 488 players with at least 25 competitive runs, according to Baseball Savant.

The Dodgers star has above-average speed, all things considered, but it’s not the kind of speed one would expect from someone with 59 stolen bases. Ohtani doesn’t rival the 30 mph sprint speed of stolen base leader Elly De La Cruz; in fact, he’s closer to the league average of 27 mph than he is to De La Cruz or Bobby Witt Jr.

Still, Ohtani has taken advantage of his opportunities on the basepaths. He walks often enough to have more chances than most players, and his height gives him a bit of an advantage when it comes to getting from one base to the next. At the same time, height can also slow a player down. Ohtani (6-4) and De La Cruz (6-5) have broken that mold with their success on the basepaths.

“You don’t expect a guy to be built like that to be able to move how he does,” teammate Gavin Lux said in May, summing up the experience of watching Ohtani run the bases.

Having a feel for the moment, including what kind of lead to take and when to run, is an important skill as well, and Ohtani’s 93.7 percent success rate on stolen base attempts speaks to how well he does in those categories.

Ohtani can run, but he isn’t close to the top of the leaderboard at 28.1 mph. Sprint speed doesn’t directly correlate to stolen base total, though.

Many of the fastest players are part-time players, including Victor Scott II and Johnny DeLuca, because speed alone doesn’t justify putting a player in the lineup every day. Others just don’t take as many chances, and some stars, including Witt, are careful not to take too many injury risks.

De La Cruz and Ohtani played a brand of baseball this season that was built on creating havoc on the basepaths. That Ohtani was able to rack up 59 stolen bases without blazing speed might make his achievement that much more remarkable.

It was a bad night to be Jacoby Brissett. The Patriots quarterback was running around a lot and getting hit plenty.

The Jets decided to blitz a lot more than their first two games and that helped. The defensive front ended up being rewarded.

Those notching sacks for the Jets included Will McDonald IV (1.5), Quinnen Williams (1) and Micheal Clemons. (0.5), among others. In total, Brissett was hit 15 total times as well.

In an added treat, McDonald and Clemons did Jermaine Johnson’s sack celebration as he recovers from his Achilles injury. A nice touch.

The New England Patriots open their 2024 regular season schedule with a road trip to Paycor Stadium on Sunday to take on the Cincinnati Bengals.

An ugly 4-13 finish to the 2023 season is plenty of motivation for a Patriots team entering a game for the first time in 24 years without former coach Bill Belichick on the sideline. The team parted ways with the legendary coach back in January and hired Jerod Mayo as the new head coach in New England.

It would be a powerful statement for the first-year head coach to lead the Patriots to an upset win over the Bengals in the season opener. Granted, he’ll have his work cut out for him in beating a Bengals team with a returning Joe Burrow on the road.

However, crazier things have happened in Week 1 openers, and the Patriots are hoping to add to that list by pulling off a shocking upset win over a likely playoff-contending team.

Breaking: Tulsi Gabbard endorses Donald Trump

Former Democrat Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii has just endorsed Donald Trump for president, saying he will keep America out of endless wars.

“I am committed to doing all that I can to send President Trump back to the White House,” Gabbard said.

Gabbard ran for president in 2019 and is known for her brilliant take-down of Kamala Harris during a debate in which she criticized Harris for jailing hundreds of people for marijuana violations while she was attorney general of California, but bragged about her own use of pot. Harris went on to win not a single delegate vote that year and quickly dropped.

“She put over 1,500 people in jail for marijuana violations and then laughed about it when she was asked if she ever smoked marijuana,” Gabbard said of Harris during that debate.

Gabbard left the Democratic Party in 2022, declaring it an “elitist cabal of warmongers.”

Her endorsement comes on the heels of an endorsement by another Democrat free-thinker, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who left the Democratic Party last year.

Predictions for Chiefs preseason opener vs. Jaguars

The preseason provides a great opportunity for many players unsure of their standing on the roster to make an impact and impress coaches. Rookies get their first taste of the NFL, and veterans shake off the rust from a long offseason with the Chiefs targeting the unprecedented three-peat.

The offense will see some of Patrick Mahomes, but the focus will be on the depth at wide receiver, considering all the speculation regarding Rashee Rice’s status. The play of Xavier Worthy will be watched critically in his first NFL game, along with veterans with much to prove, like Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore. The offensive line will be watched closely, especially with the competition at left tackle and potential options at left guard without Joe Thuney.

On defense, the focus will be on the young players in the secondary trying to fill the void left by L’Jarius Sneed at cornerback. Steve Spagnuolo has demanded a player step up during training camp, and the preseason opener against the Jaguars would be an ideal statement game for a player.

The preseason opener results don’t matter on the scoreboard, but it should be a competitive game with the reserves playing significant time.
