First day of early voting brings in 5,000+ Brazos County voters

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Monday was the first day of early voting in Texas, and 5,144 people have already cast their vote in Brazos county for the current election.

Trudy Hancock, elections administrator for Brazos County, told KBTX this election is already bucking trends.

“We have hit the ground running today,” Hancock boasted. “We usually run 50/50. 50% early and 50% election day. I have a feeling this time, a lot of people are going to vote early.”

Thousands of people have already cast their vote in the Brazos Valley on day one of early voting.(kbtx)

As far as first-day jitters, Hancock said it was a smooth day of voting.

“We’ve had a few little technical issues like ballot paper getting jammed and things like that, but nothing to halt voting,” explained Hancock.

Bryan native Jeremy Zamora said he was eager to cast his vote.

“I think it’s important, as an American citizen, to do your due diligence as your right to vote and have your voice be heard,” Zamora shared.

Hancock said it was a large turnout today, and areas like Robertson County are experiencing the same influx of voters with the same amount of foot traffic in a day as it would in a week.

“Just remember, once you’re in that line, you’re within that 100-foot marker, so there is no electioneering. No shirts, buttons, hats for candidates; just be sure that you’re mindful of that,” advised Hancock.

A total of 5,144 people in Brazos county cast their ballot on day one of early voting.

Although lines were a little long on day one, Zamora said election workers quickly and efficiently kept voters moving.

“Do your due diligence of who you want in the office and running the country,” Zamora added.

For those not voting in person but nervous about their ballots being received due to post office issues, Hancock has a pro tip.

“If you’re worried about the post office, your ballot having to go out of town and then come back, you can go to the post office on Boonville and walk your ballot in. They will hand stamp it and put it in a box, and they deliver them to us daily,” suggested Hancock.

A mail-in ballot must be postmarked no later than 7 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 5 and received by 5 p.m. the following day. That may be a tight turnaround, so Hancock advises all to send out your ballot as early as possible.

49ers Fall to the Chiefs in Week 7; Five Takeaways from #KCvsSF

49ers Fall to the Chiefs in Week 7; Five Takeaways from #KCvsSF

In a battle of NFL heavyweights, anything goes. The Chiefs attempted a fake punt on 4th-and-two on their opening drive and were stopped in their tracks by safety Ji’Ayir Brown and defensive lineman Jordan Elliott. After the turnover on downs, San Francisco took over at Kansas City’s 45 yard line.

In the second quarter, the special teams unit put up the first points of the game. Kicker Anders Carlson, who was signed on Tuesday due to injuries to Matthew Wright in Week 6, kicked a 55-yard field goal through the uprights to make it 3-0 San Francisco with a minute left to play in the first quarter. He later drilled a 24-yard field goal attempt but missed the extra point attempt following the 49ers first touchdown of the day.

Defensive Line Stacks the Plays Early

San Francisco’s defensive line made their impact early in Sunday’s showdown. The line’s string of splash plays began on the second defensive series as Kansas City was driving down the field and just inside the red zone. Nick Bosa sacked Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes for a loss of five yards. On the very next play, third-year defensive lineman Kalia Davis, who has battled through multiple knee injuries early in his career, tipped and came down with Mahomes’ pass to register his first-career interception.

The next time the defense took the field, defensive lineman duo Maliek Collins and Leonard Floyd got home on Mahomes for a loss of four yards to force a three-and-out. As a result of their stout defensive play, Kansas City went scoreless in the first quarter.

Rookie Receiver Snags His First-Career Reception

Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall completed his comeback from the Non-Football Injury list on Sunday. The 49ers first-round pick of the 2024 NFL Draft was sidelined early in the year after suffering an injury in an attempted robbery in late August. He caught his first pass, a six-yard completion on second-and-10, in the final minute of the second quarter. That catch garnered a huge cheer from the crowd at Levi’s® Stadium and helped fire up San Francisco’s offense. Quarterback Brock Purdy and company were able to drive down the field and close out the drive with a 24-yard field goal.

Secondary Steps Up in the Third Quarter

Fourth-year defensive back Deommodore Lenoir spoiled the Chiefs opening drive of the second half intercepting a pass intended for Chiefs receiver Xavier Worthy. Lenoir was able to pick up 33 yards on the return to set up the 49ers offense on Kansas City’s 23 yard line. San Francisco went on to score on the ensuing drive. Purdy punched in the touchdown on a quarterback sneak to cap off a seven-play, 23-yard drive. On the Chiefs next offensive series, cornerback Charvarius Ward came in clutch, breaking up a deep shot intended for Travis Kelce to force a three-and-out.

  • Wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. was dealing with an illness prior to kickoff, and despite being cleared to play was hardly on the field early. He was listed as questionable with an illness in the third quarter and then out minutes later.
  • Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk suffered a knee injury on the 49ers final drive of the second quarter. He landed awkwardly with two Chiefs defenders following a 15-yard completion. He was ruled out in the early minutes of the third quarter. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said postgame the team is “worried” Aiyuk injured his ACL but that injury has not been confirmed.

49ers Secure 36-24 Win on ‘Thursday Night Football’

49ers Secure 36-24 Win on ‘Thursday Night Football’

Purdy Perfect Against the Seahawks

San Francisco’s QB1 has yet to lose a game to Seattle and his win streak now extends into the 2024 season. In his fourth regular season start versus the Seahawks, Brock Purdy completed 18-of-28 pass attempts for 255 yards and three touchdowns and a quarterback rating of 129.3. Purdy’s two favorite targets of the night were wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr., who caught three passes for 102 yards, and tight end George Kittle, who had five catches for 58 yards and two touchdown. Samuel Sr.’s second quarter score was one of the top plays of the night – the veteran pass catcher hauled in Purdy’s shot near midfield and added another 50-plus yards after the catch for the 76-yard touchdown. Kittle’s first touchdown was equally as impressive – the veteran made the end zone grab and toe tapped at the pylon for the 10-yard score.

Rookie Standouts in Seattle

With veteran safety Talanoa Hufanga back on the Injured Reserve list, the team turned to rookie Malik Mustapha to start in his place alongside sophomore Ji’Ayir Brown. Thursday marked Mustapha’s second NFL start, and the rookie wasted no time making his presence known, picking off Seattle’s quarterback Geno Smith as he was leading his team down the field in their opening drive. Defensive lineman Nick Bosa recorded a quarterback hit and Mustapha was ready to grab Smith’s shot to wide receiver Tyler Lockett. The interception was the first of Mustapha’s young career.

Fellow rookie Renardo Green had a pick of his own midway through the fourth quarter on what could have been Seattle’s go-ahead drive. Green jumped the route and picked off a pass intended for Seahawks receiver D.K. Metcalf and swung the momentum back in San Francisco’s favor. The 49ers went on to score two touchdowns after that interception to seal the victory.

Jordan Mason‘s Productive Night in Seattle

Mason entered Week 6 as the NFL’s second leading rusher and added another nine carries for 73 yards on Thursday night. However, the third-year back did not play the entirety of the team’s Week 6 matchup. Midway through the second quarter, Mason ran to the left side for a 14-yard gain but landed hard on his left shoulder when he was brought down by a swarm of defenders. He was labeled as questionable to return initially, but after further examination, was cleared to return for the start of the third quarter.

It appears the injury did affect him, however, since he only had one carry for eight yards in the second half. Mason opened up the game in a big way, ripping off 38 yards on his third rushing attempt to set up San Francisco’s 25-yard opening drive field goal. With his 73 yards on the ground, Mason overtook Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry to lead the league in rushing yards with 609 yards on the year.

Welcome to Crew, Matthew Wright

After touching down in The Bay roughly 48 hours ago, kicker Matthew Wright made his 49ers debut on Thursday night. The fifth-year pro had his first kicking opportunity on San Francisco’s first offensive series, and he nailed it, capping off a 13-play, 90 yard drive with a 25-yard field goal. He added a 41-yard field and 35-yard kick in first half and hit all three of his extra point attempts on the night.

Special Teams Big Play of the Night

In addition to Mustapha’s first quarter interception and Green’s fourth quarter pick, San Francisco added a special teams takeaway in their Week 6 matchup. The team’s second turnover is credited to the 49ers special teamers who turned a Seattle kickoff return into an extra possession for San Francisco early in the second quarter. Cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. made contact with Seahawks returner Laviska Shenault Jr. and linebacker Tatum Bethune recovered the fumble. The 49ers capitalized on the turnover, turning it into three points on the ensuing drive.

  • S Malik Mustapha (ankle): exited the game in the second quarter and was downgraded to out in the third quarter.
  • RB Jordan Mason (shoulder): questionable to return in the second quarter and returned to action in the third quarter.
  • OL Aaron Banks (cramps): was labeled as questionable in the fourth quarter and was replaced by Spencer Burford.
  • K Matthew Wright (shoulder)

Day 3 of the Carly Gregg Murder Trial recapped

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Day three in the Carly Gregg Murder Trial has wrapped up, with the teen’s defense attorneys officially resting their case.

The jury heard from four witnesses brought forward by the defense. Those were a juvenile, Gregg’s stepfather, Heath Smylie, Deputy Tony Shack, and Psychiatrist Dr. Andrew Clark.

The defense started with the juvenile and Gregg’s stepfather.

They then moved on to Deputy Shack and presented his body cam footage to the court from when he drove Gregg back to the scene.

In this footage, you see when officers fixed her handcuffs and Gregg asks about her stepfather.

Gregg: “Is my stepdad okay?”

Deputy: “I don’t know, baby. I can’t talk to you about that right now. Are you okay?”

Gregg: “Yeah, I’m fine.”

Deputy: “She don’t even know about her mom.”

The defense drilled the deputy because he muted his body camera while talking to other members of law enforcement while at the scene, but he claims he strictly discussed a “personnel issue” while his body cam was muted.

They then moved on to Dr. Clark who conducted a psychiatric evaluation on Gregg after the incident.

He diagnosed her with Bipolar 2 disorder after that.

According to Dr. Clark, Gregg told him her memory went blank when she got home during the shooting, and the next thing she remembers is when the deputy picked her up.

The teen’s medication was switched from Zoloft to Lexapro a week before the incident, but the doctor says she didn’t make the switch properly.

Dr. Clark testified that the medication made Gregg’s mood swings worse the day of the shooting and that she was hearing voices.

Dr. Clark says after viewing the home footage of the incident, it was concerning for him.

“One problem is, you know, when I saw the video of the kitchen at 4:10 in the afternoon, you hear the shot she comes in, she looks to me to be cool and collected and unemotional. I would have expected, had she panicked, that she would be quite agitated and emotionally aroused. I didn’t see that at all.”

The doctor was then asked by the prosecution if Gregg was not aware of her actions, but he said he did not have enough information to determine if the medicine change made her do what she is alleged of.

We could see more witnesses and evidence on day four. The Judge did tell the jury if the case is finished by tomorrow and if they are asked to come to a verdict, they will stay at the courthouse until a verdict is reached.

49ers Fall 23-17 to the Vikings; Five Takeaways from #SFvsMIN

George Kittle Comes Up Big in Game No. 100

Sunday’s matchup marked “The People’s Tight End’s” 100th career game, and he made his presence known in this milestone game. Kittle caught every pass thrown his way in the first half, snagging five catches for 56 yards and a touchdown. His highlight grabs of the first half included a 25-yarder on the 49ers second offensive series and a seven-yard touchdown reception to get the 49ers on the board in the second quarter. In the second half he added two more catches for 20 yards.

Jordan Mason Runs It Back

With All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey now on the Injured Reserve list, the third-year running back is the next man up in San Francisco for the foreseeable future. Mason stunned in his first-career start against the New York Jets, racking up 147 rushing yards and a touchdown, and he put together another noteworthy performance in Minnesota. Mason tallied up 100 rushing yards on 20 carries and punched in another score. His third quarter, 10-yard touchdown made it a one-score game with just over ten minutes to play.

Punter Mitch Wishnowsky had his first quarter punt blocked and returned for 37 yards by Minnesota safety Theo Jackson to set up the Vikings on San Francisco’s 24 yard line. The 49ers defense was ultimately able to keep the Vikings out of pay dirt with a key pass breakup from safety George Odum in the end zone but did secure three points off a 22-yard field goal from kicker Will Reichard.

Later in the third quarter, cornerback Isaac Yiadom saved the 49ers from a turnover following a muffed punt. The veteran corner recovered the loose ball amongst a pile of special teamers from both sides to keep the ball in San Francisco’s possession and begin their drive on their own 13 yard line.

Fred Warner Creates Two Turnovers

After falling behind 10-0 in the second quarter, All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner provided the splash play the 49ers needed to reenergize both sides of the ball. Warner snagged a pass from Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold inside the red zone and returned it for 25 yards to set up San Francisco on their own 35 yard line. The interception marked Warner’s first pick of the year, and the 49ers were able to capitalize on the turnover, punching in their first touchdown of the day on the ensuing drive.

Warner created a second turnover in the third quarter, punching the ball out of Vikings running back Aaron Jones’ hands inside the red zone. Yiadom was able to once again secure the loose rock to lock down a possession for the 49ers. San Francisco’s offense took over on the one yard line.

Defensive Front Stacks the Sacks

Defensive lineman Nick Bosa got home twice on Darnold, both times for a loss of five yards. His first sack came with a minute left to go in the first half and helped stall out the Vikings momentum on their final drive of the second quarter. Minnesota came away with just a field goal on that drive. Bosa’s second sack came midway through the third quarter and secured a three and out for the 49ers defense. Bosa was injured on a rushing attempt by the Vikings later in the third quarter but was able to reenter the game in the fourth quarter. Warner and defensive lineman Kevin Givens added sacks of their own in the fourth quarter to bring the group total to four sacks in Week 2.

49ers and Raiders Break Even in Preseason Finale; Five Takeaways from #SFvsLV

Purdy and the Offense Find Their Groove Early

San Francisco’s starting quarterback had the same amount of playing time he had in the team’s second preseason game, leading the offense for a total of three drives that extended into a couple minutes of the second quarter. Against the Raiders, Purdy and company found their rhythm early with a tone-setting 27-yard connection from the quarterback to Samuel Sr. near the left sideline. The opening series resulted in a six-play, 37-yard drive capped off by a 49-yard field goal by kicker Jake Moody. In their next possession, Purdy hit Kittle in traffic to convert on third-and-six, scrambled for 14 yards and a first down to set up running back Jordan Mason for the four-yard score.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan had ninth-year pro, Brandon Allen, take over for Purdy a few minutes into the second quarter. He closed out the night completing five of seven passes for 60 yards with the momentum of three of his four drives falling victim to some dropped passes and a couple sacks. Allen had a couple of nice connections that included a 24-yarder to tight end Cameron Latu and a 19-yard toss down the middle to Jacob Cowing.

Joshua Dobbs was under center for part of the third and fourth quarter and completed six of seven passes for 49 yards and a touchdown. His first drive was the most efficient and resulted in an 11-play, 55-yard drive capped off by a shot to Cowing down the middle for the score. Tanner Mordecai closed out the game, and despite not leading the team to any scoring drives, did complete a chunk play to Ronnie Bell and a deep shot to Trent Taylor on the final play of the game.

Teamwork for the Turnover

After forcing a quick three-and-out to start the game, the 49ers defense came up with a turnover the next time they took the field. Sophomore safety Ji’Ayir Brown and linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles put a big hit on Raiders quarterback Nathan Peterman to force the fumble, and defensive lineman Robert Beal Jr. secured the loose ball to set up the 49ers right at midfield.

San Francisco’s defensive line suffered a couple injuries to free agent signings Yetur Gross-Matos and Leonard Floyd in the first quarter of Friday night’s game. During the 49ers second defensive series, Gross-Matos got rolled up on a Raiders run play on first down, and two plays later, Floyd got caught up in a pile while trying to bring down Peterman on a scramble. Both were labeled questionable to return with knee injuries in the first half and did not return to the field. Prior to going down, Floyd made a nice tackle of Peterman in the backfield on the Raiders opening drive.

After the game, Shanahan said it is likely both players have knee sprains but will undergo MRIs for further examination.

Rookie Running Back Shines on Special Teams

Running back Isaac Guerendo made his preseason debut after spending most of training camp and preseason working back from a hamstring injury. The 49ers fourth-round pick was working in tandem with fellow running back Patrick Taylor Jr. as kickoff returners for the first half of Sunday’s contest. After Las Vegas punched in an 81-yard punt return touchdown in the second quarter, Guerendo responded with his own explosive special teams play. He caught and returned the ensuing kickoff for 93 yards and now owns the longest dynamic kickoff return of the preseason.

Guerendo’s 93-yard return set up San Francisco at the Raiders four yard line for their next offensive possession. Taylor Jr. took the back-to-back handoffs on the ensuing drive and punched in the three-yard touchdown to put the 49ers up 17-7 with just over nine minutes left to play in the first half.
