Rams fall to Cardinals 41-10

Arizona capitalized on the change of possession, leaning on running back James Conner and the scrambling ability of quarterback Kyler Murray to set up a 23-yard touchdown pass from Murray to wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. for an early 7-0 lead.

After Los Angeles was forced to punt on the ensuing series, Arizona extended its lead to 14-0 with a 60-yard touchdown pass from Murray to Harrison Jr. on the first play of that drive.

The Rams were again forced to punt after their third offensive series, though punter Ethan Evans’ 67-yard punt was downed at the 1-yard line by cornerback Charles Woods. The shallow starting field position didn’t deter the Cardinals, who reached the endzone 13 plays later on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Murray to tight end Elijah Higgins to up 21-0 early in the second quarter.

A 42-yard, out-of-structure completion from quarterback Matthew Stafford to wide receiver Demarcus Robinson, plus an unnecessary roughness penalty, helped the Rams finally get on the board with a 29-yard field goal by kicker Joshua Karty to cut their deficit to 18.

By halftime, the Rams were 1 for 6 on third down and trailed 24-3.

Conner’s 5-yard touchdown run made it 31-3 Cardinals with 10:33 left in the third quarter.

After Arizona added a 56-yard field goal by kicker Matt Prater, Los Angeles answered with a 4-yard touchdown run by running back Kyren Williams, but it still trailed 34-10 with 41 seconds left in the third quarter.

Bills 34, Cardinals 28 | Final score, stats to know + game highlights

2. Fast start

After Codrington set the Bills up with great field position on the Bills’ opening drive of the game, Allen fumbled, and the Cardinals brought the ball down for a K Matt Prater field goal.

Allen made up for the early fumble, bringing the Bills on their two possessions into the red zone and scoring both times.

On their first scoring drive, Cook got going early, receiving six carries, including a 15-yard scamper. Allen found TE Dawson Knox for 23-yards for his only completion of the drive. In the red zone, Allen ran for a rushing touchdown, but it was called back following a face mask penalty and the Bills settled for a K Tyler Bass field goal.

After Arizona cashed in on their ensuing drive, with only 2:44 left in the half, Allen led the offense on a two minute-drill. Even with the several false start penalties, Allen found the end zone on a rushing touchdown from seven yards out. In the process, WR Khalil Shakir bounced off a defender and took a pass from Allen 19-yards and Coleman also caught his first career catch for 12-yards.

After receiving the second half kickoff, that was short of the landing zone and placed the ball at the 40-yardline, the offense got right back to work. Allen found his running backs this time, completing a 25-yard pass to Cook and Davis for another 14-yards. Allen ended the drive throwing a dart to Hollins, tying the game at 17-all.

Arizona Cardinals vs Buffalo Bills: Bold Predictions, Key Players

It’s game week for the Arizona Cardinals and they have a doozy of a matchup to kick off the new year as they head to take on Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills.

Truly, there are few ways you can start off your season with a bigger challenge.

Let’s hop into this season opener and see if the Cardinals have a chance to pull off perhaps the biggest week one upset against the Bills on the road.

Marvin Harrison Jr.

How will everyone’s favorite rookie fair in his first ever NFL game? My prediction – pretty damn well.

The Bills are a mess in the secondary as they replace All-Pro safeties Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde. They also have serviceable cornerbacks who shouldn’t hold a candl;e to MHJ. Expect journeyman and former Cardinal Rasul Douglas to shadow Harrison.

There are big expectations for Harrison as a rookie and this game is a perfect opportunity to come out and make a statement. Against a suspect secondary, Harrison could come out and put on a show in his NFL debut.

Evan Brown, Hjalte Froholdt, and Will Hernandez

Ok, so this is kinda cheating by naming three players, however they are going up against a dynamic defensive line captained by Ed Oliver. They’re going to have their hands full.

Last season, the Bills generated 54 sacks with 17.5 of them coming specifically from the defensive interior. They’re two starters from last year, Oliver and DaQuon Jones are back after tallying 12 of those 17.5 sacks (9.5 from Oliver, 2.5 from Jones).

I expect those two to move around quite a bit and create different matchups for the interior of the Cardinals offensive line. I also anticipate the Bills will be blitz heavy and send linebackers like Terrel Bernard (6.5 sacks and Tyrel Dodson (2.5 sacks) on blitz packages and attack the middle of the line.

All three of these guys must be on their A-game or not only will the Bills’ pass rush have a field day, but the Cards may have serious trouble running the football.

Zaven Collins

Collins is inheriting a massive role with the defense this year. The edge rushing room is depleted due to injuries and will force him back to that spot. However, Collins will be asked to do more than rush the passer.

The Bills have a potentially dangerous run game thanks to Josh Allen’s ability to run. Running back James Cook is also coming off an 1,122 rushing yard season with rookie Ray Davis (who had back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons to close his college career) right behind him.

With a stout offensive line captained by three-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Dion Dawkins, the Bills are primed to host one of the top rushing attacks in the league.

With that in mind, Collins will be tasked with setting the edge and limiting Buffalo’s rushing attack.

Final score: Bills 31, Cardinals 14

Zach Wilson leads the Broncos’ backups to a 38-12 win over the Cardinals in preseason finale | National Sports

DENVER (AP) — Zach Wilson and Jarrett Stidham both made strong closing cases for surviving roster cuts after losing out to rookie Bo Nix in the Denver Broncos’ latest quarterback competition.

Stidham directed an efficient touchdown drive Sunday in his only possession and Wilson drove Denver on four scoring drives as the Broncos wrapped up a perfect preseason with a 38-12 walloping of the Arizona Cardinals.

“Both those guys looked good,” said Broncos coach Sean Payton, who reiterated that he’d like to keep all three QBs when final cuts are made Tuesday. “We feel comfortable with all three.”

In his most extensive action this summer, Wilson jumpstarted a touchdown drive with a 21-yard scramble and threw a 46-yard TD on a frozen rope of a pass to Brandon Johnson with a beaten defensive back cutting across his path and he sped into the end zone.

Stidham’s cameo concluded with rookie running back Audric Estime’s 3-yard score.

“It was great,” Stidham said. “I knew going into it if I went down and scored on the first drive I’d probably be done. So, I’m really proud of the guys.”

Wilson, the former second overall draft pick by the Jets in 2021, has 33 career NFL starts and that experience showed when he sparked an 11-play, 77-yard touchdown drive with an impressive scramble from his own 13 on second-and-20. He finished that drive with a 1-yard touchdown toss to tight end Nate Atkins that gave Denver a 14-0 lead.

“I think getting hit in the face” on the long scramble “will help you get ready,” Wilson said with a smile.

Wilson’s 1-yard keeper capped an 88-yard drive that made it 24-6 in the third quarter and he found Johnson from 46 yards out with 6:22 remaining.

Wilson finished 16 of 25 for 251 yards, two TDs and no interceptions in relief of Stidham, who directed a 10-play, 55-yard drive by going 2 of 4 for 28 yards.

Payton bristled when asked if financial ramifications will come into play when deciding how many QBs to keep. Stidham is due $5 million this season and there’s been speculation he might have to take a paycut to stick around.

“No, we’ve got enough money,” Payton said. “I understand the question. We feel comfortable with those three quarterbacks. I think I’ve told you already I see the three of them making it.”

When that notion was relayed to Wilson in the locker room, he said, “Yeah, exciting. But you know cut day’s not until Tuesday, so we’ll see what happens.”

Clayton Tune and Desmond Ridder split snaps in their final audition to serve as Kyler Murray’s backup in Arizona (0-3). Tune was 12 of 18 for 119 yards with no touchdowns, an interceptions and a pair of sacks by Jordan Jackson.

Ridder was 10 of 16 for 111 yards in relief of Tune when he went to the medical tent in the closing minutes following a hard hit that left him in concussion protocol. Tune went back in and on his first snap threw an interception that linebacker Levelle Bailey returned 96 yards for a touchdown.

Denver DB Kedron Smith recorded his third takeaway of the preseason when he recovered Tony Jones Jr.’s fumble at the Denver 3. Jones was knocked from the game with a shoulder injury on the play.

Matt Prater’s 50-yarder as the first half expired made it 14-3. He tacked on a 24-yarder and Haassan Hall accounted for Arizona’s only touchdown with a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter that made it 24-12.

“I just told ’em the effort was good, they battled in there today. But you lost the explosive play battle, you lost the takeaway battle. And that’s what happens, you get beat,” Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon said.

Cardinals safety Darren Hall said the turnovers not withstanding, the Cardinals “feel good.”

“We’re still building. We’ve got a long way to go but as a team we’re real close. We have a real close bond,” he said. “The sky’s the limit for this team.”

Injuries

Denver DB Damarri Mathis, who started 17 games over the last two seasons, injured his right ankle on a tackle on the game’s second play from scrimmage and was carted off. Payton said it didn’t appear signficant. Broncos LB Durell Nchami pulled a hamstring. Cardinals CBs Divaad Wilson (wrist), Elijah Jones (ankle) and Darren Hall (hip) all got hurt and Cardinals TE Sage Surratt (ankle) left in the third quarter. O-lineman Christian Jones was carted off in the waning minutes with an unspecified injury.
