The former Raiders and Packers receiver was targeted 9 times, tied for the team lead. Additionally, he drew the attention of talented Steelers second-year CB Joey Porter Jr. for portions of the game, which allowed WRs Garrett Wilson (5 receptions for 61 yards) and Allen Lazard (4 for 58) to get more opportunities against limited double-teams.
“You could see the great synergy between Aaron and Davante,” HC Jeff Ulbrich said. “You could see the relationship that they have by being on same page. And at the same time, it’s been a second since they played together so I imagine that that relationship and the production between those two is just going to go up.”
Adams added: “We can continue to get on a better page, but I didn’t think there was rust. It is just football, and it doesn’t always work perfectly. We had a really good week of practice, and we are going to continue to go and have a good week of practice next week and see what we can do to turn this thing around.”
Now in his 11th NFL season, Adams brings his years of experience and relationship with Rodgers to the Jets, and believes the team has what it takes to bounce back.
“We have got a lot of talent,” Adams said. “The weapons that we have, I mean, I’m in the huddle today and multiple times I was just looking around and thinking it’s kind of crazy. Knowing that you got those type of weapons and to come up short and to put up 15 points against the team that I mean, there is a lot more we can do for sure.”
Trailing the Buffalo Bills by 3 games in the AFC East, the Jets have much work to do and 10 games left to do it. Adams believes it’s all about the details.
“You don’t get 20 opportunities to make it right in this league,” Adams said. “Sometimes you just got to get out there and take the defense that’s presented, figure out a way to make it work. And we didn’t do that enough. We had no issues moving the ball. I felt like this was the ultimate, shot-ourselves-in-the-foot type of day.”
A new face in the lineup led to a win on “Sunday Night Football.” And no, we’re not talking about Davante Adams and the New York Jets.
Playing in his Pittsburgh debut after returning from a calf injury that had sidelined him since the preseason, quarterback Russell Wilson shook off a pair of shaky drives to throw for 264 yards and two touchdowns in a 37-15 win against New York.
The Steelers are now 5-2.
Though Justin Fields had led Pittsburgh to a 4-2 record in Wilson’s place, the team opted to give Wilson, the team’s starter coming out of training camp, a shot once his health improved. Wilson misfired on early throws against the Jets but soon found rhythm with deep touch passes and completed five passes to receiver George Pickens for 111 yards.
The quarterback-to-receiver connection everyone wanted to see was Adams in his reunion with former Green Bay Packers teammate Aaron Rodgers. The Jets traded with Las Vegas for Adams days earlier as part of a drama-filled week that included firing head coach Robert Saleh and demoting play caller Nathaniel Hackett. But inserting Adams, who lived with Rodgers during the week, into the starting lineup did not jump-start the offense as New York fell to 2-5.
Adams was targeted nine times but finished with three catches for 30 yards. His presence created room for teammates, but the Jets struggled to finish drives after Rodgers was intercepted twice by Beanie Bishop Jr.
Rodgers finished with 276 yards with a touchdown, as well.
The silver lining for the Jets’ weekend is that pass rusher Haason Reddick ended his contract holdout Sunday, allowing New York to insert a player with 58 career sacks into a defense that has dealt with attrition.
DeBrincat gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead at 3:46 of the first period, scoring with a one-timer from the left circle off a cross-ice pass from Lucas Raymond.
The Red Wings outshot the Penguins 13-7 in the first period.
“It might help a little bit to be busy early, it gets you a feel for the puck,” Blomqvist said. “They were pressuring hard and I had to battle through it.”
Beauvillier tied it 1-1 at 15:02 of the first . He flipped the puck into the crease from below the goal line and it went in off Red Wings defenseman Ben Chiarot.
Beauvillier then gave the Penguins a 2-1 lead at 2:55 of the second period, putting in a centering pass from Pettersson in front.
Drew O’Connor made it 3-1 at 3:53 with a tap-in at the top of the crease off a feed from Malkin, who deked around multiple Detroit skaters as he carried the puck through the offensive zone.
Pettersson pushed it to 4-1 at 5:28 with a wrist shot from the left point, chasing Husso.
“We got away from that first period game we had, and pucks started going in,” Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin said. “It felt like we were doing things right, but we had too many big-time breakdowns.”
New England’s inactives are OT Vederian Lowe (knee), G Michael Jordan (ankle), OLB Anfernee Jennings (shoulder), TE Jaheim Bell, DE Jamree Kromah, and QB Joe Milton is the emergency third quarterback. That means questionable players G Sidy Sow (ankle), CB Jonathan Jones (shoulder), and OT Caedan Wallace (knee) are active. The 49ers inactives are C Ben Bartch, CB Darrell Luter, WR Ronnie Bell, S Talanoa Hufanga, and QB Joshua Dobbs (3rd QB).
If you are a Patriots fan hoping that the 49ers would be banged up for Sunday’s game, you’re mostly out of luck. Although star RB Christian McCaffrey won’t play, 49ers offensive playmakers TE George Kittle and WR Deebo Samuel are officially active, as is stud LT Trent Williams. Samuel (calf) and Williams (illness, toe) were questionable for Week 4.
Starting with the offensive line, for the first time this season, G Sidy Sow is active and will likely start at left guard. Heading into the season, Sow was the Pats projected starting left guard, but the 2023 fourth-rounder suffered an ankle injury in the preseason finale. After missing the first three games, Sow will make his season debut vs. the 49ers, and the team is hopeful that a year-two leap is coming for the second-year pro.
As a rookie, Sow had some inconsistencies in pass protection (five sacks allowed). However, he showcased his raw power as a solid run-blocker in gap schemes. Although the offense as a whole struggled, one of the few things it had last season was running downhill behind Sow and RT Mike Onwenu. Now, Sow will flip to the left side, where he’ll likely play next to waiver claim Trey Jacobs, who is slated to start at left tackle.
With Lowe out and third-round rookie Caedan Wallace managing a knee injury, Jacobs has been repping as the top left tackle during practice this week. The second-year pro spent his rookie season on the Broncos practice squad and was then waived by Denver at the end of camp. The tackle-needy Patriots claimed Jacobs, who allowed just two pressures with a 73.0 overall PFF grade in 101 snaps this preseason, on waivers. Jacobs also registered an 8.38 out of 10 relative athletic score at his Pro Day, and you saw that athleticism translate while blocking in space this summer.
Although it’s never a good thing to be down to your fourth-string left tackle, Patriots left tackles have allowed a league-high 20.8% pressure rate through three games. Frankly, it can’t get much worse. The Patriots projected starting offensive line is LT Trey Jacobs, LG Sidy Sow, C David Andrews, RG Layden Robinson, and RT Mike Onwenu. Despite his knee injury, Wallace is active, so he could factor in at left tackle if Jacobs struggles.
Next, practice-squad elevation Mitchell Wilcox takes seventh-round rookie Jaheim Bell’s spot on the game-day roster. Bell was active for the team’s first three games but only played one snap on offense and 11 special teams snaps. Wilcox, a more sturdy in-line run blocker, will take the rookie’s spot to reinforce the Patriots run-first approach on Sunday. Although it makes sense stylistically, it’s slightly disappointing that Bell, an explosive open-field athlete, hasn’t carved out a role.
On defense, one under-the-radar injury for the Patriots was edge-setter Anfernee Jennings. Although he returned on Friday, Jennings was questionable with a shoulder injury after not participating in the first two practices of the week. Jennings is officially inactive, a big loss for the Pats defense against the 49ers wide zone system. San Francisco runs more outside the tackles than almost any team in the NFL, with outside zone as the basis of head coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense.
The keys to slowing down the outside zone scheme are sturdy edges and interior penetration. Over the years, New England has countered the Shanahan tree with five or six-man defensive lines. The goal is to set the edge, force the ball carrier back inside, and unlock the interior to get upfield with extra edge support. Now, the Pats will need to accomplish that without their best edge-setter against the run, leaving Keion White and Joshua Uche as their primary edge rushers. This season, veteran Deatrich Wise has also rushed more as a stand-up outside linebacker.
The Patriots defense could align in a tilt front (6-1) or a more standard 5-2 structure with hybrid EDGE Keion White on the strong side. Then, NT Davon Godchaux can hold up the backside combination block by absorbing the double team, allowing on-the-line players like Wise, Daniel Ekuale, Jeremiah Pharms, and Trysten Hill to penetrate the line of scrimmage. Although it’s easier said than done, that’s a possible formula to stop the 49ers dangerous rushing attack, but it’s harder to execute with Jennings sidelined.
In the backend, New England has typically cycled through cover-three (buzz) and quarters coverages against the Shanahan tree. By starting with two high safeties, they can rotate (buzz) another safety into the short zone distribution or run support. They might keep both safeties deep in quarters or Cover-2 when they anticipate a shot play. The zone defenses could also mask that the Patriots corners are at a size disadvantage against the 49ers receivers.
If the 49ers size advantage begins to show itself, the Patriots signed CB Isaiah Bolden to the active roster on Saturday. Bolden has great size (6-2, 201) and is a terrific athlete who ran a 4.33-second 40-yard dash coming out of Jackson State. Along with likely playing a role on special teams, the 2023 seventh-round pick could contribute defensively this week.
Bolden’s cover skills are a work in progress, but his body type is a better match for 49ers WR Jauan Jennings (6-3, 215), who had 11 catches for 175 yards and three touchdowns last Sunday, than Jonathan and Marcus Jones. Last week, Jets receivers Allen Lazard and Mike Williams’s size was an issue for the Pats smaller CBs. Other boundary corner possibilities are Marco Wilson and rookie Marcellas Dial Jr., who are also active.
From this perspective, top CB Christian Gonzalez shadowing 49ers star WR Brandon Aiyuk makes sense. Gonzalez has held his own in heavyweight matchups with Bengals WR Ja’Marr Chase, Seahawks WR DK Metcalf, and Jets star Garrett Wilson; if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That’ll leave some mix of the Joneses, Bolden, Wilson, and Dial to cover Jennings and Deebo Samuel, who is active for San Francisco despite being listed as questionable.
The Patriots are massive underdogs on the road in San Francisco (-10). For head coach Jerod Mayo, this week is about seeing buy-in from his team. Obviously, you play to win every game. However, the 49ers are on a different level than the rebuilding Patriots. All you want to see from New England is a more competitive effort than last Thursday night in the Meadowlands. It stinks to be in moral victory territory, but that’s where the Patriots are against a Super Bowl contender on the road.
The Patriots will face the 49ers at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara with kickoff at 4:05 pm ET on Sunday.
Taylor Swift wants Travis Kelce to leave a blank space for new adventures.
Ryan Murphy — who directed the Kansas City Chiefs tight end in his forthcoming show “Grotesquerie” —shared the advice the Grammy winner gave her boyfriend when he signed on to act in the FX series.
“The only thing that [Travis and I] talked about was that she’s very supportive of him, and if he has an interest, she wanted him to try it,” Murphy exclusively told E! News at the Sept. 23 premiere of “Grotesquerie” in New York. “I was thrilled about that.”
After all, Murphy heard nothing but “sweet, lovely things” about Swift, adding, “I love her, too.”
And when it came to working with the football player, the “American Horror Story” creator admitted Kelce didn’t need any tips. As Murphy — who also created and served as a producer on the drama — put it, “A star is a star is a star — and he’s a star.”
“He’s so charismatic, and he’s so smart, he’s lovely,” he continued. “He had a window of time. He asked me to work up something for him. I did. It was an honor.”
“He knew everybody’s lines,” Murphy explained. “He had a great discipline, and he is everything you want him to be. He’s a leader, and so sweet and so charming, first on the set, last to leave, great team around him.” (For more from Murphy, tune into E! News tonight, Sept. 23, at 11 p.m.)
In fact, Kelce was able to work through his fear of being vulnerable in front of the camera.
“He went into that knowing it was going to be a little scary, and it was for him,” Murphy shared. “And one day, I rewrote a whole scene that I wasn’t liking, and he memorized it in 10 minutes — like that. It was letter perfect. Like, he’s very, very smart, and he’s got something important.”
Taylor Swift is living her best life and showing support for Travis Kelce. The star recently stepped out at his game with the Kansas City Chiefs, and now Access Hollywood is breaking down everything you need to know.
As for what Murphy thinks the NFL star’s future in Hollywood looks like? The 58-year-old believes anything is possible.
“If Travis Kelce wants to be a big movie star, he could do it,” Murphy said. “You can see in the show, he can act. And he’s talented.”
He added, “The world is his oyster. He can do anything.”
“Grotesquerie” premieres with two episodes on Sept. 25 at 10 p.m. on FX and will be available to stream the following day on Hulu.
BOSTON — Drake Maye made his NFL debut for the Patriots on Thursday night, relieving veteran Jacoby Brissett late in the team’s 24-3 loss to the New York Jets. Could a permanent change be coming in New England?
Head coach Jerod Mayo wouldn’t say after the game.
“I don’t know. We talk about every single week, you’re competing for a job. We’ll get together as a coaching staff and see how it goes,” Mayo said Thursday night.
Chances are the Patriots will go right back to Brissett. But Mayo and his staff have a week-and-a-half to decide before the Patriots play the San Francisco 49ers in Week 4.
Drake Maye comes in for Jacoby Brissett late in loss to Jets
After Brissett was sacked five times and managed just 98 passing yards against the New York defense, Maye entered with 4:24 left in the fourth quarter with the Patriots down 24-3. His first NFL pass was nearly picked off, as he televised a throw to tight end Austin Hooper and Michael Carter nearly jumped the route. After a second-down handoff to Antonio Gibson picked up seven yards, Maye was violently taken down by Jamien Sherwood for a one-yard scramble.
Maye was sacked on a first-down drop back after the two-minute warning. He used his legs and scrambled for 11 yards on a fourth-and-8, and then after three straight incompletions, he connected with DeMario Douglas for 15 yards to keep the drive alive and get the Patriots down to the New York 7-yard line.
But the drive — and the game — ended when Maye was sacked on first-and-goal. He completed four of his eight passes for 22 yards while scrambling for 12 yards on two carries in his professional debut.
Mayo said it was his decision to insert Maye on Thursday night. While he was worried about the state of the offensive line, which gave up seven sacks and 15 QB hits on the night, he saw a chance to get the rookie some game action.
“Good opportunity for him to get out with the ones and put a few drives together. He moved the ball,” Mayo said of Maye. “We’ll watch the film and evaluate.”
Maye said he was ready when his number was called, and was excited for the chance to make some plays.
“Just get ready to go out there. No regrets, go out and have some fun,” he said. “My first pass got tipped so I’m glad it hit the ground.”
Maye was happy to get a few first downs on his 16 plays, but added that he “can’t take stupid sacks.”
Jacoby Brissett responds to Drake Maye playing vs. Jets
Brissett was asked about being replaced by Maye, and he was as professional as ever. Asked if he believes the starting job is still his, Brissett replied “of course.”
“I don’t make personnel decisions. My job is to go out and get ready to play, put good football on tape, and put my best foot forward,” he said.
Brissett was asked about Mayo being non-committal about his starting quarterback going forward, but didn’t want to say much.
“I’m not going to overreact to something I didn’t hear,” he said.
Maye gave Brissett some props for battling throughout the game on Thursday.
“He kept getting up every time. He made some great throws tonight,” Maye said of Brissett. “I’m pulling for him. He’s a great teammate.”
Will this speed up New England’s plan for Drake Maye?
The Patriots had planned to take things slow with their potential franchise quarterback, but now might have to throw him into the fire given how lifeless the offense has been with Brissett under center. However, the struggles of the offensive line might keep Maye on the bench for a little longer.
The Patriots drafted Maye third overall in April out of North Carolina and he showed a lot of growth throughout training camp and the preseason. He didn’t play much in New England’s preseason opener, completing two of his three passes for 19 yards. But he saw extended time on the field in the second preseason game, and completed six of his 11 passes for 47 yards while adding a four-yard touchdown run on a nice read option.
In New England’s preseason finale, Maye was 13-of-20 for 126 yards and a touchdown pass against the Washington Commanders. He finished his preseason 21-of-34 for 192 yards with one touchdown pass and a touchdown run.
While Brissett beat out Maye to be the team’s Week 1 starting quarterback, Mayo confirmed last week that Maye was getting about 30 percent of the reps with New England’s starters in practice. Mayo said backups usually only get about five percent of the snaps with starters, but the extended run with the team’s starters was part of Maye’s development plan.
Now we’ll see if that plan is fast-tracked to give the New England offense some life, or if concerns about the offensive line will keep the Maye in a safe place on the sideline.

Kylian Mbappé scored his first goal for Real Madrid as the Spanish side beat Atalanta of Italy’s Serie A 2-0 to win Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup in Warsaw, Poland.
The annual preseason match features the winners of the Champions League (Real Madrid) and Europa League (Atalanta) meeting ahead of the start of their domestic league schedules.
After a quiet first half that saw Vinícius Júnior hit the post, Real Madrid took control of the game within the first 20 minutes of the second half. Federico Valverde opened the scoring in the 59th minute, and nine minutes later, Mbappé left his mark on the match.
Jude Bellingham found Mbappé cutting into space inside the Atalanta penalty box and the French star connected to find the top right corner for his first goal.
Mbappé, 25, was sporting the No. 9 shirt, previously worn by Real Madrid legends like Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Ronaldo Nazário and Fernando Morientes, and played all 90 minutes during the club’s sixth UEFA Super Cup victory.
Mbappé joined Real Madrid in June after spending seven seasons in France with Paris Saint-Germain. There he won six Ligue 1 titles, the Coupe de France four times and helped PSG reach the 2019-20 Champions League final.
Now with Real Madrid, Mbappé will reportedly make $16 million a year after receiving a $100 million-plus signing bonus and is part of a squad that is loaded with world-class talent such as Viní Jr., Bellingham, Rodrygo and Luka Modrić, among many others.
Mbappé and Real Madrid will play next on Saturday against Mallorca as they begin their La Liga campaign and seek their 37th La Liga title and fifth since 2016-17.
Sam Howell threw for 130 yards and a touchdown in his Seattle debut and the Seahawks had a successful preseason opener under Mike Macdonald, defeating the Chargers 16-3 on Saturday in coach Jim Harbaugh’s first game with Los Angeles.
Howell, acquired from Washington during the offseason, directed a pair of scoring drives in the second quarter. He completed 16 of 27 passes in 10 series and played until a little over midway through the third quarter.
Seattle quarterback Geno Smith did not play after missing practice time last week due to knee and hip issues. Wide receivers DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett, along with running back Kenneth Walker III, were among the other Seahawks offensive starters who did not see action.
While the Seahawks were able to move the ball, the Chargers struggled. They went three and out and gained only 21 yards on their first six offensive possessions with Easton Stick at quarterback.
Stick, who has been taking the majority of first-team snaps for the past week with Justin Herbert sidelined due to a foot injury, was 5 of 13 for 32 yards and an interception in his eight series of work during the first half.
With the exception of Herbert, and running backs J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards, the rest of the starting offense got playing time. With Herbert’s injury status remaining an unknown, it should make for an interesting couple weeks for Harbaugh, who returned to the NFL after leading Michigan to a national championship last season.
Howell — who started all 17 games for the Commanders last season — opened the scoring with a 13-yard touchdown pass to tight end with Brady Russell with 12:27 remaining in the first half. Russell caught the ball at the Los Angeles 10-yard line and eluded a tackle attempt by Chargers linebacker Nick Niemann before making it into the end zone.
Stick gave the Bolts their initial first down on an 11-yard keeper with five minutes remaining in the first half. Then came a 15-yard completion to tight end Stone Smartt to the Seahawks’ 40.
The drive stalled, but Cameron Dicker put the Chargers on the board with a 58-yard field goal. Had it been a regular-season game, that would be the second-longest kick in franchise history.
Myers supplied the only points of the second half with a 47-yard field goal with 4:41 remaining in the fourth quarter.
DEFENSIVE HIGHLIGHT
The Chargers’ defense got some momentum midway through the second quarter when they stopped the Seahawks on two running plays from the LA 1, resulting in zero Seattle points on a 14-play, 84-yard drive.
