Denver Broncos’ first ever Latina team reporter proud to represent culture

Denver Broncos’ first ever Latina team reporter proud to represent culture

The number of Latina reporters in the NFL is fairly limited but has been on the rise in recent years.

In Denver, despite the Denver Broncos’ rich history with a diverse fan base, the organization has never had a Latina team reporter. That was until this season when they hired Los Angeles native Elisa Hernandez.

Over the years, the team has actively engaged Latino fans through outreach programs, community events and celebrations of Hispanic heritage.

The organization hosted its Vamos Broncos event during Sunday’s home game, a Hispanic Heritage Month celebration at Empower Field at Mile High Stadium.

As the Broncos’ relationship with Latino fans grows steadily, bringing on a voice like Hernandez contributes to the team’s vibrant culture.

However, you should know Hernandez is more than meets the eye.

“It feels surreal,” Hernandez told CBS Colorado.

Hernandez grew up as one of four children in Los Angeles, at times helping her father clean apartments to make ends meet. “I never saw it as anything bad,” she recalled.

Her parents immigrated from El Salvador to the U.S. during the Salvadoran Civil War, and although she was born in California, she understands their journey wasn’t easy.

Sports, however, were what truly brought her family together. Growing up in the “City of Angels” in the late 1990s, Hernandez followed the Denver Broncos, since Los Angeles didn’t have an NFL team at the time.

“Being able to do what I love for the team that I’ve loved since I was a little kid is pretty special,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez’s path to her dream job as a team reporter for the Broncos wasn’t facile. After graduating from USC, she noticed many of her peers landing on-camera jobs right away. “I didn’t get discouraged,” she said.

Instead, Hernandez focused on learning the industry’s behind-the-scenes aspects. “I think my first job at the NFL was a ticker operator,” she explained, reminiscing about the job. “You know, the scrolling text at the bottom of TV screens that provide scores and weather updates,” she laughed.

Despite taking a different path, Hernandez understood one thing: Getting her foot in the door was key.

“Regardless of what happens, you just have to get your foot in the door and work your way up to create opportunities for yourself,” she added.

And that’s exactly what she did, working for nearly every sports team in Los Angeles and all the networks. Her resume extends from NFL Network to Telemundo Deportes.

Most recently, Hernandez served as an in-arena host for the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball.

“I hosted the first Salvadoran night at Dodger Stadium, which was a big accomplishment for me,” Hernandez said. “That representation matters. Seeing little brown girls there, watching me on the Jumbotron, and hearing our slang — it impacts them because they see themselves in me!”

For Hernandez, spreading her knowledge of her culture is essential. However, as a first-generation Salvadoran, she aims to pave the way for others like her — breaking barriers and becoming the Broncos’ first ever Salvadoran team reporter.

“I think being able to have this platform, I do it for them. They are my why. My family is my why. Representing my country, heritage and culture is important.”

Denver Broncos’ Bo Nix Ties John Elway, Drew Lock For Rookie Quarterback Win Record

Denver Broncos’ Bo Nix Ties John Elway, Drew Lock For Rookie Quarterback Win Record

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix led the Denver Broncos to a 33-10 win over the New Orleans Saints on Thursday Night Football.

The former Oregon Duck reached a major rookie milestone on an emotional evening as Denver coach Sean Payton played his first game in the Superdome as an opposing head coach. Payton coached in New Orleans for 16 years and aided in the rebuild from Hurricane Katrina.

Nix has led the Broncos to a 4-3 record, their best record after seven games since the 2016 season. With those four wins, Nix tied the Broncos’ franchise record for most wins by a rookie quarterback in a season. Former Denver quarterback Drew Lock also reached that record in 2019. While NFL legend John Elway got his fourth win in Week 15 during the 1983 season. Elway’s rookie season was rough, finishing with a 4-7 record as a starter.

“It means a lot,” Nix said after the win in the Superdome. “You’re talking about one of the greats to ever do it at our organization. It means a lot. You’re in great company. I am not finished. We have a lot in front of us, so I definitely don’t want to stop there.”

Nix has a chance to get his fifth win, and surpass both Lock and Elway, next Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.

The Saints also started a rookie at quarterback, Spencer Rattler, who New Orleans drafted with the 150th-overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Though this game was overall a showing of rookie mistakes from both quarterbacks, as the Broncos slowly dismantled an incohesive and injury plagued Saints team to crank out a very secure 33-10 win. This win is a positive sign for Denver after a heartbreaking loss against the Chargers the previous week, which busted a three-game win streak.

Against the Saints, Nix started off clunky for the Broncos’ first drive on offense. After rushing for two first downs for Denver, Nix threw three incompletions. Two of those incompletions were an overthrow (to tight end Lucas Krull) and underthrow (to former Duck wide receiver Troy Franklin) by Nix, with two wide open receivers unable to catch his passes.

After this drive is when Denver began to rely more on Nix’s legs and short passes instead of long targets downfield. The next two offensive drives for Denver ended in field goals. Javonte Williams punched in Denver’s first rushing touchdown during the Broncos’ first drive of the second quarter. Heading into the half with another field goal under their belt, the Broncos had the Saints shut down 16-0.

During the last drive of the half, Nix did attempt a few deep balls that didn’t connect, but for the most part, Nix stuck to a formula of pass-offs for rushing attempts, quarterback keepers, and short passes. Nix went 13-of-21 passing for 134 yards that half, and further showing his biggest asset is his mobility in the run game. Nix had zero turnovers and zero sacks going into the lockerroom.

Also, a quick shoutout to Denver Bronco and fellow former Duck, Alex Forsyth. The former star center and leader of the Ducks from 2017-2022 worked his way up to the Broncos’ starting center position. During the game vs. the Saints, Forsyth shined, giving Nix extra room in the pocket and enforcing more rushing opportunities for the Broncos. The Broncos averaged 6.4 yards per carry against the Saints. Forsyth is also a huge contributor to Nix not seeing turf for a sack this game.

Coming out of the half, the Broncos picked up another field goal and then touchdown in the third quarter before going scoreless through the fourth. With a little less than seven minutes in the third quarter and on a third down, Nix kept the ball for a 33-yard run for a first down which was essential for keeping the Broncos’ drive alive and was one of his best plays of the game. The analysts for the broadcast compared Nix to Taysom Hill after the play. That run ended in the only touchdown the Broncos scored in the second half.

Overall, Nix ended the contest with 16-26 (61.5%) for 164 yards on passing. He went 75 yards for ten rushing attempts. He ended the game with zero interceptions and no sacks thanks to his offensive line and athleticism moving out of the pocket for rushing attempts.

Though with rookie growing pains, Nix is helping lead the Broncos with coach Sean Payton to a 4-3 record, potentially setting up the Broncos for a playoff run down the line. As long as Nix can stay healthy and not get too banged up when hitting the ground game, it should be interesting to see how this former Duck continues to develop as the first rookie captain for the Broncos in over 50 years.

The Broncos take on the Carolina Panthers next Sunday, October 27, at home at 1:25pm PST.

Football fans: It’s time to kick back and relax with some Thursday Night Football as the Denver Broncos (3-3) face the New Orleans Saints (2-4) tonight at the Caesars Superdome.

The Los Angeles Chargers put an end to the Broncos’ 3-game win streak on Sunday, Oct. 13, with their 23-16 victory. Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton called it a “disappointing loss.”

“They ran the ball better than we did. We mustered up some offense late in the game. All of this starts with me. We have to be better offensively. We have to protect the ball better. That is what I saw. We will go from there. We have a short week,” said Payton, adding that the team will have to learn from the game and move forward.

Keep reading to find out how and when to watch the Broncos vs. Saints NFL game tonight.

Why Sean Payton “loved” Bo Nix’s fiery demeanor on the sideline in the Denver Broncos’ win over the Las Vegas Raiders

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Bo Nix didn’t hold back when addressing his head coach Sean Payton on the sideline midway through the Denver Broncos‘ dominant 34-18 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.

Fiery. Animated. Passionate.

Those are all words that could have been used to describe the emotions, temperament and actions of the 24-year-old quarterback toward his 61-year-old head coach.

And despite Payton being the head coach and Nix just the quarterback, the head coach loved it.

“Absolutely. Absolutely,” Payton said on Monday morning, when asked if he liked Nix speaking up in the animated moment during the game that was caught on national television. “All good. All good.”

“It’s the heat of the moment, it’s the game. It’s competitive, he’s fiery,” the head coach added, playing down the significance of the moment. “We’re in the business of passion.”

And being in the business of passion, as Payton said, the Broncos are looking for that type of passion Nix displayed.

“We’re looking for passion, and we’re looking for people who have passion for the game—not other things,” the head coach said. “I think that it’s so important to him. Again I loved his response. We’re on to the next play, and it’s nothing.”

One more thing Payton will love about that exchange is how Nix responded. After taking a few minutes to cool down, the rookie quarterback played the best stretch of football he’s played in his short NFL career.

To finish off the game, after the sideline exchange, Nix went 5-for-5 for 54 yards and had a passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown.

“He played well,” Payton said, evaluating Nix’s performance against the Raiders. “He used his feet, went through his progressions, threw the ball well, got it down the field, took the underneath throws. He handled the two-minute again. That’s happened a number of times now, where we’ve been able to get some points at the end of the half. He had good command of what we were doing, and I was pleased.”

On top of that, the Broncos’ scored a season-high 34 points, got their first division win, snapped their eight-game losing streak to the Raiders, extended their win streak to three games and started AFC West divisional play 1-0.

No wonder Sean Payton had no issue with Bo Nix showing passion on the sidelines.

Broncos 26, Bucs 7 – Bucs Lose to Denver Broncos in Week 3

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers fell to the Denver Broncos 26-7 as miscues piled up for the home team. The Bucs were unable to sustain drives offensively and converted three-of-11 third-down attempts. Baker Mayfield was sacked seven times, and the Tampa Bay defense struggled to get off the field.

On the Broncos’ first play from scrimmage, Courtland Sutton gained 22 yards out of hurry-up mode and two plays later, Josh Reynolds picked up 31 yards down the right sideline on a back-shoulder grab. He worked over the top of the Bucs’ defense for a chunk play to the Tampa Bay 11-yard line. Quarterback Bo Nix capped off the six-play, 70-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown scramble around the right edge. The Bucs’ offense followed suit with a quick three-and-out following a gain of two yards by Rachaad White from third-and-ten.

On the following drive, the Bucs’ defense forced a quick punt. Jordan Whitehead forced Jaleel McLaughlin out of bounds on a screen. He diagnosed and got to the spot, limiting McLaughlin’s YAC-opportunity. Nix threw an incompletion on third down, forcing a punt.

The Bucs’ next drive was halted by a Broncos’ takeaway. Brandon Jones intercepted Mayfield and returned it 36 yards to the nine-yard line. The Bucs’ defense stood on third-and-goal from the one, stopping Javonte Williams short. Denver challenged the ruling but the play was upheld. The Broncos were able to cash in on fourth down with a one-yard Jaleel McLaughlin run around the right end, giving the Broncos a 14-0 advantage. Tampa Bay’s offense stalled after a quick three-and-out as Riley Moss forced an incompletion to Trey Palmer on third down.

The Broncos’ ensuing 13-play, 41-yard drive ended in a Will Lutz 43-yard field goal as Tykee Smith and Joe Tryon-Shoyinka stopped Troy Franklin short of the sticks. A third down illegal block above the waist by Powers set up third-and-20 for Denver.

The Bucs turned it over on downs on the subsequent drive after Mayfield’s pass to Godwin on fourth-and-two went incomplete. The tide changed on the next Broncos’ drive as the Bucs posted their first takeaway of the day. Lavonte David forced a fumble and Logan Hall recovered. Bucky Irving then followed suit by getting to the open field post-cut for a 32-yard gain. Irving pushed the Bucs to first-and-goal at the one with a 13-yard gain.

Mayfield faked a handoff to White and Irving flowed in motion around the opposite end, putting the Bucs in an advantageous field position. The Bucs were able to cash in before the half with a Godwin score. Before the snap from second-and-six, Godwin lined up wide on the left side of the formation. He utilized a quick stutter-step and worked outside to gain enough leverage to spin his body around to secure the catch on a six-yard score. The Bucs trimmed their deficit, 17-7 on the six-play, 67-yard drive. To end the first half, the Broncos came away with three. Chris Braswell brought relentless pressure on third down, forcing Denver to settle for a Lutz 38-yard field goal.

Coming out of the intermission, despite gains of 13-yards by both Cade Otton and Chris Godwin, a sack on Mayfield by John Franklin-Myers for a loss of seven yards and an ensuing incompletion and no gain for White on a screen, the Bucs were forced to punt. The Broncos’ offense then fizzled on a three-and-out with a near interception by Tykee Smith on third down. The Bucs managed to cross midfield on the next drive off a couple of Irving plays, but a sack on Mayfield on second down (-8) and an incompletion to Godwin on third down forced another punt inside Raymond James Stadium for the home team.

On the Broncos’ following possession, Bo Nix scrambled to the Tampa Bay 31-yard line, forcing several missed tackles for a gain of 22 yards. Two defensive offside penalties by the Bucs at the end of the third quarter set up third-and-four for Denver. The drive culminated in a Lutz 33-yard field goal, making it a 23-7 game. The Bucs’ offense followed up with a turnover on downs after a second-down sack of Mayfield and another takedown by the Broncos’ defense on fourth down as Mayfield tried to evade pressure.

Tampa Bay’s defense then managed to hold the Broncos to three after Tyler Badie took Denver to the Tampa Bay 32-yard line on a 43-yard gain up the middle. Lutz drilled a 43-yarder, extending their lead 26-7. Just before the two-minute warning, a disastrous series occurred for the Bucs. Mayfield was sacked on second down and on third down, a Cade Otton fumble was recovered by Denver’s Brandon Jones. Moss knocked the ball out and Jones returned it 34 yards to the Broncos’ 47-yard line.

What’s really going on with Venezuelan gangs in Denver?

TikTok and other social media platforms have been littered with terrifying videos of “Venezuelan gangs” taking over apartment complexes in Denver, but what’s really happening?

Well, it’s not fake… Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman acknowledged on Thursday (Aug. 29) that Venezuelan gangs have taken control of several apartment complexes in the northern part of the city in what he called “a nightmare situation.” He also admitted that the city “lost control” of the gang infiltration “and we’re working aggressively to get it back.”

The Denver Police Department also acknowledged that gang members may be linked to local crimes, however they have found no evidence of apartments being taken over in Denver.

Then there’s Denver Mayor Mike Johnston who’s explained that the Denver Police Department has been proactively working with federal, state, and local agencies to address the emerging threat, saying, “This should never happen in our state, and it will not be tolerated in Denver. We will hold those who break the law accountable. We will hunt them down, find them, arrest them, and deport them. We have zero tolerance for this type of behavior.”

So long story short, the gangs are real, but the good guys say they’re taking care of it. Hopefully that’s actually the case!

How and when to watch the Green Bay Packers vs. Denver Broncos preseason game

The Green Bay Packers vs. Denver Broncos NFL preseason game will be played on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2024 at 8:00 p.m. ET (5:00 p.m. PT). The NFL preseason game will air on NFL Network, and stream on Sling TV and the platforms featured below.

How and when to watch the Green Bay Packers vs. Denver Broncos preseason game without cable

While some cable packages include NFL Network, it’s easy to watch today’s game if NFL Network isn’t included in your cable TV subscription, or if you don’t have cable at all. Your best options for watching are below. (Streaming options will require an internet provider.)

Sling TV is the most cost-effective way to stream the Green Bay Packers vs. Denver Broncos game

If you don’t have cable TV that includes NFL Network, one of the most cost-effective ways to watch tonight’s game, and all the major sporting events happening this fall, is through a subscription to Sling TV. To watch the NFL Network on Sling TV, you’ll need a subscription to the Blue tier. We suggest leveling up your coverage to get more NFL games this fall with the Orange + Blue tier.

That Orange + Blue plan normally costs $60 per month, but the streamer currently offers a half-off promotion for your first month, so you’ll pay just $30. It’s your best NFL-watching option for the season, which includes ESPN, ABC, NBC and Fox.

The streamer is also currently offering big savings on four months of the Orange + Blue tier plus the Sports Extra plan when you prepay for the Sling TV Season Pass. The Sports Extra plan includes a large number of channels for pro and college football fans, including NFL RedZone, SEC Network, Big Ten Network and ESPNU. Prepay for four months of the Sling TV Season Pass and spend $219, reduced from $300.

Because Sling TV does not carry CBS, Sling subscribers will want to add Paramount+ to their bundle. (Note: Paramount+ and CBS Essentials are both subsidiaries of Paramount Global.)

Top features of Sling TV Orange + Blue plan:

  • Sling TV is our top choice for streaming major sporting events like NASCAR.
  • There are 54 channels to watch in total, including your local NBC, Fox and ABC affiliates (where available).
  • You get access to most local NFL games and nationally broadcast games at the lowest price.
  • All subscription tiers include 50 hours of cloud-based DVR storage.
  • You can add Golf Channel, NBA TV, NHL Network, NFL RedZone, MLB Network, Tennis Channel and more sports-oriented channels (18 in total) via Sling TV’s Sports Extras add-on.
