Anthony Richardson returns as Colts beat Miami Dolphins, move to 4-3 on season

Anthony Richardson returns as Colts beat Miami Dolphins, move to 4-3 on season

After one quarter, Richardson was just 1-of-7 for 15 yards and led the team with four carries for 30 yards.

The Colts and the Dolphins traded possessions throughout the second quarter with nothing to show for it until the Dolphins connected on a 33-yard field goal to go up 10-0 with 22 seconds left in the half.

But the Colts quickly got into field goal position with a touchback and a 33-yard completion to wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr., and kicker Matt Gay sent a 52-yard kick straight through the uprights to put the Colts on the board heading into halftime.

Richardson completed four passes for 61 yards in the half and the Colts combined for 74 total rushing yards. By comparison, the Dolphins had 115 rushing yards and Huntley completed seven passes for 87 yards.

Miami Dolphins Postgame Quotes 10/6

(On his thoughts after a game like that)

“That’s a character-building win, you know. A lot of stuff went wrong, it’s like, man that was a pretty ugly ballgame, especially in the first half. But one thing we didn’t do is we didn’t flinch. We didn’t relax, we just stayed hungry, kept fighting, kept believing and found a way to get the win when it mattered. Your big-time players have to come up with big-time plays in big-time games and the way we started running the ball in the second half was inspiring. We still gave up too many yards rushing on defense, there’s a lot to clean up, lot of ball that we can work on. But we’ve got a bye week, we’re going to study ourselves, we’ll figure out how to get better and come out of this bye and try to get another win.”

(On if it was a frustrating day even though the Dolphins came away with the win)

“When you get a win, especially after we haven’t had a win for a few weeks, I don’t know, you can’t be too frustrated. I feel pretty good right now. It could definitely be better. We will grade it, we will clean it up and we will try to improve. But you know, it’s been so long since we’ve got a win, I’m just going to enjoy this one. 24 hours, 24 hours to enjoy it.”

(On the fact that other than the turnover that set up the Patriots’ touchdown, how the Dolphins defense didn’t give up many yards)

“One of the things we try to preach is coming off of turnovers, having a sense of urgency and keeping points off the board or hold them to three. We had opportunities there. It was a bust and also (inaudible), they capitalized. It’s the NFL and they’ve got some good players. They made a big-time play. That’s something we know we can fix and we fixed it and we played a lot better. They had a really good game plan in the run game and way too many yards. One thing we’ve learned is we’ll fix it the following game, let’s just keep playing ball. Nobody has to try to do more than their job, just keep doing your job and we’ll be okay.”

(On the bye week and if it comes at a good time for the team)

“It really doesn’t matter, right? This is the time, so we’re definitely going to study ourselves and during the bye week, I always try to go back and watch every play and see what I was doing. See what works, see what didn’t work and then kind of figure out going forward, do more of the stuff that works and do less of the stuff that doesn’t.”

“Any fullback dive might be the day-one install for every offense in America, high school to Peewee, Pop Warner, everything. It was cool to end a 17-play drive like that. Credit to the offensive line, I didn’t have to do anything. Center, left guard watched their guys, they climbed up to the linebackers, so for a two-yard run to cap a statement drive is something that we needed desperately. As a team, to score a touchdown at that moment, it was a team drive, it was a team touchdown. So, I think it’s really a testament to all of our work over the last month or so, trying to get back right. It was a long drive capped off by a nice touchdown.”

(On this being the first time the team has had a real physical presence this year)

“I think it goes back to trusting things. We were running the ball quite a bit in the first half. Whether it’s a penalty here or a little procedural thing there, it kind of got us off track. We get four-yard runs, six-yard runs, but we trusted each other. Coaching staff, all the way down to the players. Doing your one-eleventh. That’s all that a running game is. A full team playing all four quarters. And I don’t think, like you said, we haven’t seen that quite yet out of our team. It’s something we’re working on, it’s our process that we’re building towards, so to see a seventeen-play drive in the fourth quarter, when we need it, I think was pretty cool for our entire process, for our entire organization to go through that together.”

(On going back to Miami with a win)

“I think you’re a couple plays away from a win or a loss, and somewhat of a sloppy execution game you could say. Being able to validate that the process that we’re building towards something. You see glimpses on tape, week-in and week-out, then you have the results of a loss, it can sting, it’s frustrating, it’s demoralizing, it’s tough. When you get that win, you’re able to say, ‘okay we’re on the right track, we’re building towards something right.’ But it’s not good yet, it’s not good enough yet. So, that little tweak in the mindset, fighting to find that silver lining I think is extremely important for our team going into a bye week 2-3, to be able to right the ship, to be able to continue to cross the Ts and dot the Is and make sure we’re a better football team at the end of the season than when we started.”

(On if any other plays from the game stand out to him)

“Yeah I think Jaylen Wright (RB), definitely stepped up big. One of his biggest runs of the day was called back because of a holding call. To see him not blink, to be able to go back and convert on a first down later in that same drive, that I think was really cool to see. Raheem (Raheem Mostert, RB) to come back and be able to play physical, you see him, he’s the fastest guy on the team, one of the fastest guys on the team. To be able to run, yards after contact and push that pile, doesn’t seem like a whole lot but second and three is a whole heck of a lot better than second and eight. To be able to find those creases, I think both of those guys played really hard, really physical and it was really cool to see them flourish in the fourth quarter like that.”

(On Tyler Huntley in the huddle)

“His personality was coming out in a number of different ways, and I loved it. It’s more than just a play call, right. As a quarter back, when you get a little bit more comfortable, he’s been here a couple weeks now, to be able to see his little impacts, his little points of emphasis in the huddle, being able to make guys lock in on their assignments and details and understanding the circumstance of the game, I think that was really cool for Snoop to be able to do that for our offense because that’s what a leader is. He’s coming in a tough spot as a quarterback and to be able to have command, to be able to find that confidence to voice himself, for guys to listen and respect that was everything that you could hang your hat on for this offense right now.”

(On if there was a point where the offense could feel the command from Huntley)

“I think that was in the second half. To understand that we were going through adversity, mishaps, things we can’t control. Whether it was a wild snap, a blocked punt, a missed field goal, we had all those things happening in the first half. To be able to have that confidence and command and say ‘no matter what happens, we can’t control that, we can control this right now’, that was pretty special to see. Anybody can have command when it’s all going good, but when you’re playing from behind, when it’s gritty like that, when you’ve got to get a couple first downs to string along a drive and have command when it’s not going well, I think that was the biggest respect Snoop got from all of us.”

(On the offense playing from under center)

“Either way it doesn’t really matter, just get the ball in our hands, and we will try and make it work. They were giving us some good looks, at the end of the day we just try and exploit them and take advantage.”

(On overcoming the first half mistakes)

“It was fairly tough. You see what’s going on like when we were in the red zone, and then the ball gets snapped behind us and Ally [Alec Ingold] recovers the snap, little things like that, are just putting us in a bind, but honestly we just have to overcome those things.”

(On how not to have the mistakes get the team down)

“I guess you just have to have a talk with the guys and you know after that the whole thing happened, I just jumped right in and said, ‘everyone let’s go, let’s pick it up, and that’s not how we play ball. We have to stop making these critical mistakes and go out there and do what we do.'”

(On how it feels to be back)

“It’s been good and I don’t know what my stats are but I really don’t care. I’m just happy we got the biggest stat which is that W, and honestly it feels good. Just watching the team from afar and the sidelines these past couple of weeks, it has been a little bit of a mental stressor but at the same time it has been one of those things that I just have to get healthy and get back out there for the boys and I was able to do that today.”

(On getting the run game going this week)

“It felt good, after a hard-working week of practice. We were able to focus on the details and paying attention and having the right aiming points and right tracks and everything. I just feel like it all came together in the second half. I felt like we were getting good movement thanks to the offensive line. We were getting good movement you know and getting it up to the second or third level. It opens things up for the run to produce great runs.”

(On the drive at the end of the game and Tyler Huntley’s play)

“He is a pro and he is here for a reason. Coach brought him in for a reason. He is somebody we can lean on, you know someone who he is leader already and he has only been here for like three weeks. I feel like he has done a great job in the system for how short of a time he has been here. Just him being out there, just him getting everyone lined up and paying attention.”

“This win has been needed. We have had a rough past few weeks, you know what I am saying. But that is just the beat of the game. We put those past games in the past and you know we just have to stay in the present. We got a win this week going into a bye week and then we come back with the same mindset to win.”

(On getting the win in a close game)

“The only satisfaction relies on winning. We got the job done and that is all that we came out here for and I am going to enjoy this one. It’s just another game on the schedule. Winning in this league is all that matters. Each week is its own challenge. There are different ways of winning, but at the end of the day, in that column there is only win or loss. Every week defensively, offensively, special teams, there are different scenarios that help you win games and sometimes you have to lean on certain things. Obviously, objectively, you want every group to come together and operate as one. It doesn’t always go that way but at the end of the day we figured out a way to win.”

(On getting a win heading into the bye week)

“You don’t want to go into a bye week with however many days off with a loss. You want to go into the bye week with momentum and I’m glad that we got it. Now we’ve got to keep rolling. I’m going to spend some time with my family, relax and kick it a little bit. Spend some time with my wife and kids. I’m going to try and catch a game (at his college, FIU).”

(On getting the win heading into the bye week)

“We’re 2-3 and the whole season is ahead of us. It’s great getting a win going into the bye week, but there’s a lot to correct. We did it, we won, but I think we have a lot going forward for us to work on and work on what worked today.”

(On how he thought the game went)

“Our offense was moving the ball and I had total faith. We have powerful running backs and the ground game was awesome today. I don’t care how we win, if we move the ball, we move the ball. There’s no ugly victories. It is hard to win in this league. I don’t care who you are or how good your team is, or what the score is. We did it, we have things to clean up, but we did it.”

(On if he thought the defense played well)

“We played good, but we can play better. That’s how we look at it, always get better; always keep improving.”

(On if they had a specific goal defensively to control the game)

“Defensive line-wise, we always go in thinking we are going to stop the run and take control up front to do our part to win the game. You can only control what you do and when you try to do too much that is when things go bad.”

(On his thoughts about the offensive struggles in the first half)

“There are definitely things we need to improve on. I can only speak for myself and I need to go back to my technique and fundamentals. We’ll watch the tape on the plane and see what we need to correct.”

(On being able to run the ball in the fourth quarter and get the win)

“It’s great. We were effective in the run game during the game and especially at the end. It’s something we are going to keep building on. It’s something we can’t give up on so we have to keep working and keep trying to improve.”

(On what was working well today)

“With us, it was just staying committed and trust in what we are being coached. Throughout the week we were coached to go outward and not upward and I think that carried over to the game. Pad level was emphasized and that is something we worked on that came through today.”

(On the seven-and-a-half-minute game-winning drive)

“That was tiring. You never really count the plays, but you’re kind of just looking around and just waiting for the next play, but it’s all about one play at a time. Definitely at the end though, that was a tiring one.”

Tennessee Titans QB Will Levis injured during ‘Monday Night Football’ game against Dolphins

Tennessee Titans starting quarterback Will Levis did not come out for his team’s third drive Monday at Miami after he appeared to injure his throwing shoulder.

Levis appeared to be hurt after he dove for yardage on a scramble during Tennessee’s second drive. Levis was seen on the “Monday Night Football” broadcast grimacing as he threw on Tennessee’s sideline midway through the opening quarter, and when the Titans took over with 4:14 to play, his backup, Mason Rudolph, replaced him.

Follow along for live coverage

Levis had thrown an interception earlier in the game while completing three of his four passes.

Rudolph’s entrance turned the matchup into one led by backup quarterbacks. Tyler Huntley earned his 10th career start in place of Tua Tagovailoa, who has been sidelined for a head injury. Huntley committed a turnover when his backward pass was dropped, leading to a fumble recovered by the Titans.

Titans coach Brian Callahan didn’t commit to a starter at quarterback for the second half.

Callahan said “we’ll see” when he was asked who would start the second half. He added that it would depend on whether Levis was physically ready to go.

At the start of the third quarter, Levis stood on the sidelines with his helmet on, but Callahan still opted for Rudolph, who led the team to a 31-12 victory.

Titans quarterback Will Levis injures shoulder in the 1st quarter against the Dolphins

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Tennessee Titans quarterback Will Levis left Monday’s 31-12 win over the Miami Dolphins in the first quarter with a shoulder injury.

Levis dove for a first down on Tennessee’s second drive of the game and came down hard on his right throwing shoulder. Backup Mason Rudolph replaced Levis, who did not return.

Brian Callahan, who got his first win as the Titans’ head coach, said he doesn’t think the injury is too serious, but Levis will undergo testing to determine the severity. He added that Levis tried to come back in the game but was in pain. The quarterback could be seen wincing on the sideline.

Callahan said Tennessee’s upcoming bye week factored into the decision to hold Levis out.

“Didn’t want to expose him to any further risk,” Callahan said. “He tried everything he could to go, but it was bothering him pretty significantly on his shoulder.”

Levis threw his sixth interception of the season before the injury on a pass intended for DeAndre Hopkins on the opening drive. Dolphins’ linebacker Emmanuel Ogbah caught the ball and secured it between his knees.

The second-year quarterback already has two more interceptions than he had in nine starts as a rookie last year. He’s been up and down during a season in which he has had to learn a new offense under Callahan.

Levis completed 3 of 4 passes for 25 yards on Monday. He has a 68.4 completion percentage this season with four passing touchdowns.

Rudolph replaced him and directed seven scoring drives — two for touchdowns — to lead the Titans to their first win of the season. Rudolph, in his first action of the season, completed 9 of 17 passes for 85 yards.

Callahan shut down any idea that Levis is not the Titans starter moving forward.

“Will’s healthy, he’s our quarterback,” Callahan said. “It was not based on anything other than his health and protecting him, particularly with the bye week.”

Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa

Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa Will Return in Week 8: Report

The Miami Dolphins lost quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in Week 2 after the signal caller suffered his third official concussion. Tagovailoa had been attempting to pick up a first down in the third quarter against the Buffalo Bills and ran head-first into Bills safety Damar Hamlin.

More news: Titans vs Dolphins Expert Predictions for Week 4 Monday Night Football

Tagovailoa was clearly hurt and began to make the same “fencing posture” he did in 2022 when he took a big shot to the head against the Cincinnati Bengals. After another concussion that was reminiscent of the incident in 2022, many called on Tagovailoa to retire from the NFL.

Despite the pleas for his personal safety, Tagovailoa revealed he had no intentions of retiring. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel also revealed that Tagovailoa would consult with outside neurologists to determine his playing future.

McDaniel reiterated that Tagovailoa would approach the recovery in the same way that he did in 2022. Tagovailoa met with outside neurologists during Week 3 and has now received a massive update on his playing future.

According to Dolphins beat reporter Adam Beasley by way of NFL insider Adam Schefter, “Adam Schefter reports Tua Tagovailoa is “symptom-free” and appears to be on track to return to the field as soon as Week 8.”

The Dolphins initially did not place Tagovailoa on injured reserve but eventually chose to do so to give the quarterback time to consult with outside doctors. Due to his IR status, Tagovailoa is not eligible to return until Week 8. Now, it appears that is exactly what he plans to do.

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON – SEPTEMBER 22: Tua Tagovailoa #1 of the Miami Dolphins looks on from the sidelines during the second quarter against the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field on September 22, 2024 in Seattle, Washington….

The above X post indicates that Tagovailoa is “symptom free” and will be back under center when the Dolphins take on the Arizona Cardinals. This news should make Dolphins fans plenty happy, as the offense has sputtered since Tagovailoa went down.

Backup quarterback Skylar Thompson took over in Week 2 when Tagovailoa took over. He did little to help the team come back against the Bills. During Week 3, the Dolphins opted to give Thompson a full start. The offensive line did not hold up, resulting in Thompson suffering a chest injury.

The Dolphins were then forced to use longtime veteran Tim Boyle. Boyle also could not rally the team, and Miami dropped to 1-2 on the season after beating handily beaten by the Seattle Seahawks.

More news: Dolphins Announce New Starting Quarterback For Week 4

The Dolphins had signed Tyler “Snoop” Huntley from the Baltimore Ravens practice squad, but he was given the “emergency third quarterback” designation for Week 3.

The Dolphins chose to start Huntley against the Titans, but another loss might paint a bleak picture for the offensive attack until Tagovailoa can return.

Why the Dolphins can cover

The Dolphins have blazing speed all over the field. Receiver Tyreek Hill is one of the most explosive difference-makers in the NFL. The 30-year-old has recorded 1,700-plus yards in back-to-back seasons with the Dolphins. This season, Hill has 13 receptions for 194 yards and one score.

Running back De’Von Achane has taken a step forward as a contributor offensively. Achane has plenty of speed with the ability to take any touch the distance. The Texas A&M product has 150 rushing yards, 17 receptions, 173 receiving yards and two total scores. In Week 2 against the Bills, Achane had 96 rushing yards and 69 receiving yards. See who to back at SportsLine.

Why the Titans can cover

Despite what the record shows, the Titans have a strong group of weapons on the offensive side. They brought in running back Tony Pollard this offseason and he has the speed and wiggle to break free. In his career, the 27-year-old has 3,779 rushing yards, 1,385 receiving yards, and 29 touchdowns. This season, he has compiled 158 rushing yards, 67 receiving yards and a score.

The Titans also signed receiver Calvin Ridley to a lucrative deal. Ridley can win on all three levels on the field and has secure hands as a weapon. He’s leading the team in receiving yards (136) with eight grabs and a touchdown. Ridley has finished with 50-plus yards in two of the last three games. In Week 2, the Alabama product had four catches for 77 yards and a touchdown. See who to back at SportsLine.

Dolphins Force Pair of Turnovers, Fall 24-3 to Seahawks

The Miami Dolphins forced two turnovers and recorded three sacks, but the strong defensive effort was not enough to overcome the Seattle Seahawks in a 24-3 loss on Sunday afternoon at Lumen Field.

Quarterback Skylar Thompson, in his first regular season start since Week 18 of the 2022 season, completed 13-of-19 passes for 107 yards. He left the game in the third quarter and was later ruled out with a chest injury. Quarterback Tim Boyle, making his first appearance with the Dolphins, replaced Thompson and finished 7-of-13 for 79 yards.

Seattle scored on the first drive of the game after quarterback Geno Smith connected with wide receiver Tyler Lockett for a gain of 18 yards to set the Seahawks up in Dolphins territory. Kicker Jason Myers then nailed a 56-yard field goal to give Seattle a 3-0 lead with 10:49 left in the firstquarter.

After a missed 57-yard field goal by Dolphins kicker Jason Sanders, the Seahawks utilized a blend of their rushing and passing attacks to quickly drive down the field. A four-yard touchdown run by running back Zach Charbonnet put the Dolphins in an early 10-point deficit.

Following a 51-yard punt by Jake Bailey, Miami’s defense came up with a key turnover.

On third-and-15 from Seattle’s five-yard line, Smith – while being pressured by Miami’s pass rush – was picked off by cornerback Kader Kohou on a pass that was intended for and tipped into the air by Charbonnet. Starting the following offensive drive on Seattle’s six-yard line, the Dolphins were unable to fully capitalize on the field position, settling for a 23-yard field goal.

Seattle extended its lead to 17-3 on the last play of the first quarter, as Smith connected with Metcalf downfield for a 71-yard touchdown – the only play of the explosive scoring drive.

The Dolphins recorded their second takeaway of the game with 0:46 left in the third quarter after defensive tackle Zach Sieler intercepted a pass that was tipped by defensive tackle Calais Campbell.

Taking over at their own 48-yard line, Boyle led the Dolphins on an 11-play, 50-yard drive to Seattle’s two-yard line but came away without points after an incomplete fourth-down pass that was intended for running back De’Von Achane.

Both teams were scoreless until the 4:55 mark of the fourth quarter, when Charbonnet crossed the pylon for a second time on a 10-yard run, sealing Seattle’s victory.

Achane was the leader of the Dolphins’ ground game with 30 yards on 11 carries. Rookie running back Jaylen Wright had his most productive day as a pro, rushing for 17 yards on his two attempts.

Wide receiver Tyreek Hill led Miami’s pass-catchers with 40 yards on three catches. Eskridge played three seasons for the Seahawks from 2021–23.

Dolphins RB De’Von Achane (ankle) active for Thursday night vs. Bills

Though it might not be a full speed, the Miami Dolphins’ backfield will still have plenty to burn.

Running back De’Von Achane is active for the Dolphins’ AFC East showdown against the Buffalo Bills Thursday night on Prime Video.

Achane was questionable ahead of Thursday with an ankle injury, but will not join Raheem Mostert (chest) on the sidelines for the Dolphins.

Even with Achane giving it a go, veteran Jeff Wilson is likely to get a sizable role and rookie speedster Jaylen Wright, who was inactive in Week 1, likely will get a chance to contribute as the Dolphins are sans Mostert.

In a Week 1 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Fins were held to a meager 81 rushing yards as a team, led by Wilson’s 26 yards in five carries, while Mostert was held to nine yards on six carries and Achane was corralled for 24 yards on 10 carries.

Miami will look to reestablish its running game against the reigning AFC East champs, who allowed only 67 yards to running backs in their win last week over the Arizona Cardinals.

Though he struggled to hit the next gear in the rushing game, Achane, who was sidelined six games as a rookie with shoulder and knee injuries, was a boon for the passing game in Week 1, having tallied seven receptions for 76 yards against the Jags.

An absolute burner who averaged an eye-popping 7.8 yards per carry as a rookie en route to 800 yards and eight touchdowns, Achane’s game-breaking ability maintains the Dolphins running game’s potential for explosives, just like the team’s passing game.

Mostert’s out, but Achane will give it a go for the Fins (1-0), who kick off their AFC East matchup with the Bills (1-0) at 8:15 p.m. tonight.
