Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa sustains concussion in 31-10 loss to Bills

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa left Thursday’s game against the Buffalo Bills with a concussion, the team announced.

After a fourth-down run in the third quarter, Tagovailoa collided head-first with Bills safety Damar Hamlin as he went to the ground. Tagovailoa’s teammates immediately called for trainers as he lay on the field before he eventually walked off under his own power.

Tagovailoa’s wife and two children met him in the Dolphins’ locker room, according to Amazon’s Kaylee Hartung.

“We’re told he’s conscious, awake and alert, just as he was walking off this field on his own power,” Hartung said on the broadcast after the game, a 31-10 Bills win. “We’re also told he has full movement in his extremities.”

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said he saw Tagovailoa in the locker room and said he was “in good spirits.” Asked about a possible timeline for Tagovailoa’s return, McDaniel refused to answer.

“Right now it’s more about getting a proper procedural evaluation tomorrow and then taking it one day at a time,” McDaniel said postgame. “The furthest thing from my mind is what is the timeline. We just need to evaluate. I’m just worried about my teammate like the rest of the guys are. We’ll get more information tomorrow and then take it day by day from there.”

Last season was the only year in his career in which Tagovailoa appeared in every game for the Dolphins. In 2022, he played in just 13 games as he sustained two concussions.

Against the Cincinnati Bengals in a Thursday night game that season, Tagovailoa suffered his first concussion, exhibiting the “fencing response” after his head hit the ground on a sack.

The concussion Tagovailoa sustained against the Bengals came on the heels of a controversy in which the NFL Players Association believed he wasn’t properly evaluated for a concussion four days earlier in a game against Buffalo. Tagovailoa briefly left that game with an injury but wasn’t checked for a concussion, eventually leading the NFLPA to fire the independent neurotrauma consultant in charge of pulling players with suspected head injuries off the field. The controversy resulted in a new concussion protocol for NFL players.

Tagovailoa was concussed again later in the year in a game against the Green Bay Packers, though he wasn’t diagnosed with a concussion until the day after the game.

Tagovailoa said before this season that his parents asked him to consider retirement after his concussions in 2022 but that he opted to keep playing after having consulted a doctor.

“We went and seen a doctor. … I got to get all the information that I needed to hear from on whether it was a good idea or wasn’t a good idea” to keep playing, Tagovailoa told Meadowlark Media’s Dan Le Batard. He added his parents supported his decision to keep playing.

Tagovailoa is in his fifth season with the Dolphins, who selected him with the fifth pick in the 2020 draft. He led the NFL with 4,624 passing yards last season. Entering Thursday, he was 33-19 in his career, with 82 touchdowns and 37 interceptions.

In July, the Dolphins signed Tagovailoa to a four-year, $212.4 million contract, with $167 million guaranteed.

Skylar Thompson, who replaced Tagovailoa at quarterback Thursday, said seeing what happened to his teammate “makes me sick.”

“In my position, you never want to have your opportunity come with something like that,” he said after the game. “I have a lot of love for Tua. I’ve built a great relationship with him. You care about the person more than the player. Everybody in the organization would say the same thing. Just really praying for Tua and hopefully everything will come out all right.”

Bills 31, Dolphins 10 | Final score, stats to know + game highlights

2. Let James Cook

After scoring no touchdowns in week one, RB James Cook found pay dirt three times in the first half, two on the ground and one through the air.

After the initial interception by Ingram, the Bills took over at the Dolphins’ 37-yard line. The offense started to move the ball down the field and found themselves in a fourth-down-and-three situation. On the ensuing play, QB Josh Allen threw it short to Cook who ran the ball 17 yards for the touchdown.

After both teams took turns punting the football, the offense, aided by an unnecessary roughness flag, found themselves driving the football again. Allen found himself in some trouble on third-and-twelve and found RB Ty Johnson down the field, giving the offense first-and-goal from the one-yard line. Cook then ran the football in on the next play.

On his third touchdown of the first half, Cook broke loose up the middle, running for 49-yards, breaking away from a possible tackle from S Jordan Poyer, and flipping into the end zone.

Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa leaves field with concussion after collision with Bills’ Damar Hamlin

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was ruled out of Thursday night’s game with the Buffalo Bills because of a concussion after colliding with defensive back Damar Hamlin and hitting the back of his head against the turf.

Tagovailoa, who has a history of dealing with head injuries, remained down for about two minutes before getting to his feet and walking to the sideline after the play in the third quarter. He made his way to the tunnel not long afterward, looking into the stands, appeared to smile and departed for the locker room.

The Dolphins needed almost no time before announcing it was a concussion. The team said he had two during the 2022 season, and Tagovailoa was diagnosed with another concussion when he was a college player at Alabama.

“I have a lot of love for Tua, built a great relationship with him,” said quarterback Skylar Thompson, who replaced Tagovailoa after the injury. “You care about the person more than the player and everybody in the organization would say the same thing. Just really praying for Tua and hopefully everything will come out all right.”

Tagovailoa positioned himself for a big pay bump with an injury-free and productive 2023. He threw for 29 touchdowns and a league-best 4,624 yards.

He signed a four-year, $212 million extension before this season and was the NFL’s leading passer in Week 1 this season. Tagovailoa left the game with the Dolphins trailing 31-10, which held as the final score.

“If you know Tua outside of football, you can’t help but feel for him,” Bills quarterback Josh Allen said on Amazon following the game. “He’s a great football player but he’s an even greater human being. He’s one of the best humans on the planet. I’ve got a lot of love for him and I’m just praying for him and his family, hoping everything’s OK. But it’s tough, man. This game of football that we play, it’s got its highs and it’s got its lows — and this is one of the lows.”

Tagovailoa was hurt on a fourth-down keeper with about 4:30 left in the third. He went straight ahead into Hamlin and did not slide, leading with his right shoulder instead.

He wound up on his back, both his hands in the air and Bills players immediately pointed at Tagovailoa as if to suggest there was an injury. Dolphins center Aaron Brewer quickly did the same, waving to the sideline.

Tagovailoa appeared to be making a fist with his right hand as he lay on the ground. It was movement consistent with something that is referred to as the “fencing response,” which can be common after a traumatic brain injury.

Tagovailoa eventually got to his feet. Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel grabbed the side of his quarterback’s head and gave him a kiss on the cheek as Tagovailoa departed.

Hamlin was the player who suffered a cardiac arrest after making a tackle during a Monday night game in January 2023 at Cincinnati, causing the NFL to suspend a pivotal game that quickly lost significance in the aftermath of a scary scene that unfolded in front of a national television audience.

“I love Tua on and off the football field,” Bills edge Von Miller said. “I’m a huge fan of him. I can empathize and sympathize with him because I’ve been there. I wish him the best.”

Tagovailoa’s history with concussions — and how he has since worked to avoid them — is a huge part of the story of his career, and now comes to the forefront once again.

He had at least two concussions during the 2022 season. He was hurt in a Week 3 game against Buffalo and cleared concussion protocol, though he appeared disoriented on that play but returned to the game.

The NFL later changed its concussion protocol to mandate that if a player shows possible concussion symptoms — including a lack of balance or stability — he must sit out the rest of the game.

Less than a week later, in a Thursday night game at Cincinnati, Tagovailoa was concussed on a scary hit that briefly knocked him unconscious and led to him being taken off the field on a stretcher.

His second known concussion of that season came in a December game against Green Bay, and he didn’t play for the rest of the 2022 season.

Going into last season, Tagovailoa added muscle and spent time studying jiu-jitsu in an effort to learn how to fall more safely and try to protect himself against further injury.

Report: Dolphins RB De’Von Achane to test ankle pregame

Dolphins running back De’Von Achane will test out his ankle before Thursday night’s game and there is optimism in Miami that he will play against the visiting Buffalo Bills, NFL Network reported.

The Dolphins (1-0) have ruled out fellow running back Raheem Mostert for the game against the AFC East rival Bills (1-0) due to a chest injury.

Both backs were injured during Miami’s season-opening 20-17 victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Achane, 22, had 10 carries for 24 yards and a touchdown and caught seven passes for 76 yards versus the Jaguars.

“We’ll see how it plays out,” Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said of Achane, who had been limited in practice on Wednesday after sitting out the first two sessions. Achane officially is listed as questionable.

A third-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Achane gained 997 yards from scrimmage and scored 11 touchdowns in just 11 games (four starts) during his rookie campaign.

Miami Dolphins speak out after Tyreek Hill handcuffed on ground in traffic stop – 101 ESPN

(MIAMI) — The NFL’s Miami Dolphins franchise spoke out Monday night about the traffic stop by police officers where wide receiver Tyreek Hill was removed from his vehicle, placed on the ground and handcuffed before Sunday’s season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In its statement, the organization said it was “saddened by the overly aggressive and violent conduct directed toward” Hill on Sunday, urging “swift and strong action against the officers” involved in the incident.

Hill was detained and handcuffed on the ground after being pulled over as he was driving up to Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday around 10:20 a.m. ET.

“It is both maddening and heartbreaking to watch the very people we trust to protect our community use such unnecessary force and hostility towards these players,” the Dolphins’ organization said.

The statement from the team follows the release of officer body camera footage of the incident by Miami-Dade Police on Monday night.

In the footage, which ABC News has reviewed, a motorcycle officer pulls over Hill and approaches the driver’s side window. Hill rolls down the window and tells the officer to stop knocking on the window.

Hill then asks for his ticket and tells the officer he’s going to be late before rolling the car window back up.

The officer then asks the wide receiver to roll the window down, and Hill cracks it open a little. The officer then tells Hill, “Get out of the car right now. We’re not playing this game.”

When Hill opens the door, the newly released footage shows the officer grabbing Hill’s hand and putting it behind Hill’s head. The officer then appears to drag Hill out of the car.

The videos then shows the officer putting Hill’s face down on the ground with two other officers assisting. One officer has his knee on Hill’s back until Hill is handcuffed, the videos show.

Approximately six minutes into the incident, body camera footage shows an assisting officer looking at Hill’s ID. He can be heard saying, “You know who that is, right?”

The first officer said he didn’t know and then was told Hill was one of the Dolphins’ star players.

In a statement from Hill’s attorney, Julius B. Collins, describing the incident, Collins said Hill “had his window rolled down and that officer then demanded Mr. Hill out of the vehicle even after Mr. Hill complied with that officer’s request to keep his window down.”

Collins said in his statement, “Hill rolled down his window each time he was requested to do so by the requesting officers.” He went on to call the officers’ actions “excessive” and said they were exploring all legal remedies.

“We believe that this matter was escalated due to overzealous officers attempting to impose their authority on Mr. Hill because they were not pleased with how fast he complied with their request and that Mr. Hill did not roll down his window far enough to their liking,” he added.

When asked about the incident after the game, Hill told reporters, “I wasn’t disrespectful… because my mom didn’t raise me that way, didn’t curse, none of that.”

South Florida Police Benevolent Association president Steadman Stahl released a statement Monday saying Hill’s refusal to cooperate with officers led to his detainment.

“He was briefly detained for officer safety, after driving in a manner in which he was putting himself and others in great risk of danger,” Stahl said. “Upon being stopped, Mr. Hill was not immediately cooperative with the officers on scene who, pursuant to policy and for their immediate safety, placed Mr. Hill in handcuffs.”

Miami-Dade Police Department director Stephanie V. Daniels said in a statement along with the body camera footage Monday that the “department is committed to conducting a thorough, objective investigation into this matter.”

“We will continue to update the public on the outcome of that process,” Daniels said.

Daniels also said one of the officers involved was placed on “administrative duty.”

Jaguars 2024 Season Opener Game Report: Dolphins 20, Jaguars 17

“It feels terrible to be 0-1,” Jaguars center Mitch Morse said. “But what can you do except march on, attack the next work week, be very critical of yourself but also make it constructive? I thought they came out in the second half and made some good in-game adjustments.

“We were three and out, three and out. It puts a lot of stress in the defense. I thought the defense played really good game against a hell of an offense, and we have to do more. That’s a frustrating thing.”

Lawrence threw a touchdown pass, and the Jaguars’ run defense was impressive much of the game against one of the NFL’s best and fastest offenses. The running game was strong, too – but not enough for the Jaguars to win their second consecutive regular-season opener.

Running back Tank Bigsby rushed for 73 yards on 12 carries, and the Jaguars outrushed Miami 128-83.

Lawrence completed 12 of 21 passes for 162 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions, with a second-quarter touchdown pass to rookie wide receiver Brian Thomas a key play in a strong first half for the Jaguars.

Etienne had a touchdown run, with rookie kicker Cam Little’s first career field goal giving the Jaguars a 17-7 halftime lead. Tagovailoa completed 23 of 37 passes for 336 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions.

The Jaguars’ defense in coordinator Ryan Nielsen’s debut registered three sacks and no turnovers, allowing 400 total yards – including 317 passing. Defensive lineman Arik Armstead registered a sack for the Jaguars, with defensive end Travon Walker registering two.

“We beat ourselves today,” Hines-Allen said. “They had a lot of good players, but at the end of the day, I don’t feel like they beat us. I think we beat ourselves to put them in a position to capitalize off of it. Kudos to them. They’re a heck of a team. Hopefully we see them down the road.”

Dolphins’ Tyreek Hill detained by police before Week 1 win; marks TD with handcuff celebration

Police in Florida detained Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill before the team’s Week 1 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

Miami-Dade police stopped Hill near the team’s stadium during a traffic incident, the Dolphins said.

“This morning, WR Tyreek Hill was pulled over for a traffic incident about one block from the stadium and briefly detained by police,” the team said on X. “He has since been released. Several teammates saw the incident and stopped to offer support. Tyreek and all other players involved have safely arrived to the stadium and will be available for today’s game.”

At a postgame news conference, Hill said he was pulled over for speeding but did not provide more information.

Follow along for live coverage of Week 1

Hill was seen on video on X lying face down on the ground as officers placed his hands behind his back and appeared to put handcuffs on him.

Hill said he did not know why police handcuffed him, and described the incident “crazy.” He added that he “wasn’t disrespectful” to officers and that he’s “still trying to figure it out.”

Hill also expressed appreciation for the teammates who joined him while he was detained.

“For them to put their life on the line … it was amazing to see,” he said.

The incident did not seem to affect Hill’s play. He caught an 80-yard touchdown pass in the Dolphins’ 20-17 defeat of the Jaguars. He celebrated the score by putting his hands behind his back as if they were in cuffs.

Police said in a statement that they were reviewing the incident.

One of the officers involved in the incident has been placed on administrative duties pending the internal investigation, Police Director Stephanie V. Daniels said in a statement.

“Following the incident involving Tyreek Hill, I have initiated an Internal Affairs investigation to ensure a thorough review of the matter,” the statement said.

Daniels said she is “committed to transparency and accountability to the community with any situation involving my officers.”

Hill said at the postgame conference that the fact that the officer has been placed on administrative duty “should tell you everything you need to know.”

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said findings from the review would be made available.

“I commend Chief Reyes and Director Daniels for the immediate steps taken in the hours that followed today’s incident with a Miami Dolphins player in calling for a swift internal review,” she said in a statement, referring to Miami-Dade Public Safety Chief James Reyes. “In recent years our nation has confronted important conversations on the use of force, and the internal review process will answer questions about why the troubling actions shown in public video footage were taken by the officer.”

Dolphins defensive lineman Calais Campbell told reporters police also put him in handcuffs Sunday morning.

Campbell said he stopped his car after he saw police detain Hill and tried to de-escalate the situation. He described the officers’ behavior with Hill as “excessive force.”

Hill, 30, is entering his third season with the Dolphins. He has been at the center of several legal issues dating to his time in college.

Hill was arrested in 2014 and accused of assaulting his pregnant girlfriend; he pleaded guilty to domestic assault.

He was accused of battery in 2019, and last year he settled with an employee of a Miami Beach business who alleged Hill assaulted him. No charges were filed in either case, and the NFL did not discipline Hill.

Police investigate after Dolphins’ Tyreek Hill briefly detained near Hard Rock Stadium

MIAMI GARDENS – An investigation is underway after Miami Dolphins’ five-time All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill was detained by Miami-Dade police Sunday morning, hours before the team’s home opener at Hard Rock Stadium against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In a statement Sunday afternoon, Miami-Dade Police Director Stephanie V. Daniels said she requested an “immediate review” of the details surrounding the incident.

“I have initiated an Internal Affairs investigation to ensure a thorough review of the matter. One of the officers involved in the incident has been placed on administrative duties while the investigation is being conducted,” according to the statement.

Daniels wrote that she is committed to “transparency and accountability to the community with any situation involving my officers.

A senior law enforcement source told CBS News Miami that Hill was stopped for reckless driving.

“He was uncooperative and when it was clear he would not cooperate he was placed in handcuffs and detained,” according to the source.

The source said the officers did not know who Hill was when they stopped him.

A second player who saw what was happening pulled over, got out of his car and interfered with the officers, according to the source. He was also placed in handcuffs and detained, the source said. Both players were ultimately released.

Hill was cited for careless driving.

After the incident, the Dolphins posted on X, formerly Twitter, that Hill would be available to play on Sunday.

Hill did suit up and played a pivotal role in the game.

In the third quarter, when the Dolphins were down, he started a comeback with an 80-yard touchdown catch and got the Dolphins to 17-14.

After the score, Hill placed his hands behind his back as if to simulate being handcuffed. Hill finished with seven catches for 130 yards. The Dolphins beat the Jags 20-17.

After the game, Hill addressed what had happened. He said one of the officers told him to get out of the car.

“I was doing what my uncle told me to do when you’re in a situation like that. Put your hands on the steering wheel and listen,” he said.

Moments later, cellphone video shows Hill face down on the pavement, surrounded by multiple officers, as he was put in handcuffs.

“It happened so fast. It caught me off guard, you feel me,” said Hill.

Officers then walked Hill to the curb, where seconds later, an officer appeared to force him to sit.

“What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill? Like the worst-case scenario,” he said.

When asked why he thought the police put him in handcuffs, Hill replied, “I have no idea, for real. It was crazy. I wasn’t disrespectful. My mom didn’t raise me that way.”

Fans offered their support for Hill.

“The pavement was burning hot and they stuck them down there on the ground. They just broke my heart,” said one fan after the game.

“That was the main reason why we came to the game is to watch Hill. I’m happy he was able to pull through and get in the game,” said another fan.

CBS Miami’s Mike Cugno spoke to Hill’s agent Drew Rosenhaus before the game about what had happened.

Dolphins’ Tyreek Hill detained by police outside Hard Rock Stadium

01:20

“Tyreek was detained by the police, I mean, just inexplicably put them in handcuffs relative to a moving traffic violation entering the stadium, of all things, on game day. A surreal situation. I’m extremely upset about it. Thank God, Tyreek is okay. We’ll be investigating the police conduct afterward, not making any allegations right now, we’ll leave that to Tyreek’s legal team. But Tyreek, thank God is okay. It was a very traumatic situation. He pulled it together, he is going to play today. Thank God he’s okay,” said Rosenhaus.

He added that Hill was fine physically but was mentally very upset about what happened.

Washington Commander you would steal for the Miami Dolphins!

With the Washington Commanders coming to town last week for a joint practice and pre-season game, I posted the following question-

If you could steal any player from the Washington Commanders roster to place on the Miami Dolphins roster, which player would it be and why? Who would you then cut from the Miami Dolphins roster (someone who we at least assume will make the regular season roster at this point), and why?

Well, I screwed up and cut and pasted the question from the same post about the Atlanta Falcons and forgot to change the name of the teams, but luckily, you all knew what I meant. Below are some of your best answers and thoughts on the question of the day-

Alley Gator wants an exciting rookie quarterback as an insurance policy.

Jayden Daniels. He’s on a cheap rookie contract and will play this season, because no one can survive behind our IOL.

Saskatchefin would like to steal a couple of defensive upgrades/depth pieces.

Daron Payne as he would fill a spot at DT where Wilkins left. I would also look at Jeremy Chinn as he would be someone to fill one of the 3 Safety positions.

sdphinsfan wants a possible star rookie tight end.

Ben Sinnott. This rookie is going to be a star at the TE position. He blocks (really well), has great hands, great at YAC.

The Earl says to go get this “most underrated” wideout.

Terry McLaurin. He’s produced 4 straight 1000 seasons & narrowly missed his 5th one as a rookie with 919 yards. He produces despite having had mostly trash at QB. He’s a solid route runner & has missed 3 games total in his career. He may be the most underrated WR in the league. If Miami added him as WR3 in this offense, they might score 40 ppg.

Yarganaught already got his wish fulfilled.

I would totally steal Fuller… Oops, looks like we already did!

JKBMia has a list that includes the rookie QB, a center, a tackle, and a defensive lineman.

Liked Biadasz a lot coming out of school was bummed we didn’t draft him then.

Likely him, Cosmi or DPayne. Something to plug the holes we have in the middle.

Looking at cutting Driscoll on OL or Pili/Gallimlre on DT.

dedstrk316 would like to execute the old steal and trade move.

I love Jayden Daniels but would I steal him since we just signed Tua? Yes, steal him and trade him for picks.

Dolfanjoe is down with taking Sinnott away from the Commanders.

They drafted a young TE who may be the real thing! All around and young!

21Dave wants a nasty defensive tackle.

D.Payne we can always use an upgrade on IDL!! Not sure any OL would be a up grade from what we have.

phinette wants an upgrade at center. Me too, me too!

Hands down Tyler Biadasz. It will be interesting to see how Luke McCarthy does. I noticed he is taking first team reps.

TheRoo1 wants a new name for the Commanders that fits their region. I suggest the Washington Con Men!?!

Teams names should reflect the city it represents. Dolphins fits Miami. Likewise Cowboys fit Dallas and so on.

For DC, the Federal fuqqups would be appropriate.

72Phins4ever wants to trade a crap backup QB for a center. If Grier could pull that off, he would deserve the GM of the year award. Is there an award for that?

Tyler Biadasz give them Mike White and his cap hit.

SuperG!, we are all with you. Literally every Miami Dolphins fan agrees with you!

Which Commanders would I steal? I have no idea. Who do they got on the IOL? It’s gotta be better than what we got there.

daytonadolfan must know something that the rest of us do not.

Can we get their water boy?

There are a lot of great suggestions, especially for anyone who can play along the offensive line. I can not tell you how concerned I am that the entire season could be derailed based on the lack of quality across the offensive line. I’m still hoping for a trade or two to upgrade the line. As always, thank you to each of you who took the time to answer the question of the day.
