Tennessee needed overtime to beat Florida, 23-17, a week after a road loss to Arkansas. Meanwhile, Alabama barely held off South Carolina, 27-25, following its stunning upset at Vanderbilt. Each fanbase is nervous about how wobbly Alabama and Tennessee have looked in recent weeks.
Both teams have the talent to be real SEC and national championship contenders, but the path gets considerably harder with a loss on Saturday. Especially when you remember Alabama still has No. 19 Missouri and No. 8 LSU on the schedule, and Tennessee has a road trip to No. 5 Georgia on Nov. 16. A loss Saturday will demand perfection the rest of the way while a win will go a long way come selection day.

Alabama vs. Tennessee: Need to know
QB play needs to be better: Jalen Milroe shot up the Heisman Trophy betting odds after Alabama’s win over Georgia but has fallen back to earth in his last two games. He is currently at +1200 to take home college football’s most prestigious award, according to DraftKings. There’s still a tendency to try to do too much, leading to bad decisions and bad situational awareness at times. Throwing two interceptions and taking a safety against the Gamecocks has to get cleaned up to win against Tennessee. The Volunteers’ starting QB Nico Iamaleava may have the opposite problem, focusing so much on not making a major mistake that Tennessee is missing explosive play opportunities. Iamaleava hasn’t broken the 200-yard mark since Game 2 and has thrown for only one total touchdown in three SEC conference games. Tennessee can rely on a strong ground game, but it still needs a lot more from its ballyhooed starting quarterback.
Tennessee’s defense is legit: Under Josh Heupel, the Vols have made the most noise with what they do offensively, but this year the defense has carried them. Led by defensive coordinator Tim Banks, Tennessee’s defense has been superb in 2024. As our Brandon Marcello pointed out in his great Banks profile, Tennessee ranks second nationally in total defense (249.8 yards per game), yards per play (4), yards per rush (2.2) and third-down conversions allowed (23.8 percent). Tennessee faces its toughest test yet against Milroe, Ryan Williams and the rest of that Alabama offense, but its defensive line should cause some problems against an average Alabama offensive line.
Expect a rollicking game: Last season Tennessee raced out to a 20-7 halftime lead in Tuscaloosa only for Jalen Milroe and the Crimson Tide to dominate the second half and win 34-20. Two years ago, Tennessee also got out to a hot start (21-7 first quarter lead). Alabama stormed back but the Volunteers held the Tide off for a wild 52-49 finish that ended with the goalposts paraded around Knoxville that night. It’ll be rocking inside Neyland Stadium and no matter which team gets off to an early lead, buckle up for what should be a lively back-and-forth affair between two teams with plenty of experience in high-stakes rivalry games.

Both teams have been inconsistent this season with highs like Alabama’s win over Georgia and Tennessee’s over Oklahoma paired with shocking lows of road losses. Alabama is the more explosive team and has shown it can win in a track meet-type game, but its defense has left a lot to be desired so far this season. Vanderbilt straight up outplayed Alabama’s defense and got what it needed over and over again on third down. Tennessee should have success running the ball against the Tide, but there remain questions whether Nico Iamaleava can make enough big plays to win a game like this. To this point this season, he hasn’t been able to though it largely hasn’t caught up to Tennessee outside of the Arkansas loss. Football fans: It’s time to kick back and relax with some Thursday Night Football as the Denver Broncos (3-3) face the New Orleans Saints (2-4) tonight at the Caesars Superdome.
The Los Angeles Chargers put an end to the Broncos’ 3-game win streak on Sunday, Oct. 13, with their 23-16 victory. Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton called it a “disappointing loss.”
“They ran the ball better than we did. We mustered up some offense late in the game. All of this starts with me. We have to be better offensively. We have to protect the ball better. That is what I saw. We will go from there. We have a short week,” said Payton, adding that the team will have to learn from the game and move forward.

Tylee Craft, a wide receiver who was diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer in 2022, died Saturday, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill football program announced Oct. 12.
The official X account for UNC’s football program wrote, “It is with love and fond memories that we announce Tylee Craft has begun his journey on the other side.”
“Tylee meant so much to so many and affected us in ways we’ll always be thankful for. He was 1-of-1 and, while he won’t be with us in body, he’ll be watching over us with his endearing smile and endless positivity,” the statement read. “On behalf of his family and our program, we sincerely thank everyone who supported Tylee during his battle with cancer. It means more than you know.”
“What a difficult thing to tell a group of young people about one of their best friends,” he said.
Craft, who graduated from Sumter High School in South Carolina, appeared in several games his freshman and sophomore seasons at UNC as a wide receiver.
Craft missed his junior and senior seasons, and he announced his decision to “medically retire” in July. The graduate student stayed close to the UNC football program by serving as a student coach.
After UNC’s Oct. 5 game against Pittsburgh, coach Mack Brown got emotional at a press conference while telling reporters that Craft had been hospitalized that morning, adding, “He’s really struggling. He needs a lot of thoughts and prayers.”
Oregon jumped to No. 2 in the Coaches Poll for the first time since 2014 after beating Ohio State for the program’s first ever win over a top-two opponent. However, No. 1 Texas tightened its stranglehold on the top spot after receiving 53 of the 55 first-place votes.
Penn State also jumped Georgia and moved to No. 3 in the rankings after the Bulldogs struggled in a 41-31 win over Mississippi State. The Bulldogs stayed at No. 4, while Ohio State dropped three spots to No. 5 after the one-point loss to the Ducks. No. 8 LSU and No. 9 Clemson also both jumped Tennessee to get back into the top 10.
Down the board, Army entered the poll for the first time since 2018 after moving to 6-0 with a dominant 44-10 win over UAB. The Black Knights are 6-0 to start the season for the first time since 1945, when the program went on to win a national championship and produce Heisman Trophy winner Doc Blanchard. Nebraska also moved back into the rankings at No. 25.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tyler Warren caught 17 passes to tie the FBS single-game record for tight ends, Ryan Barker hit a 36-yard field goal in overtime and No. 4 Penn State rallied from a 14-point deficit in the second half for a 33-30 victory over USC Football on Saturday.
Drew Allar passed for a career-high 391 yards and two touchdowns despite three interceptions for Penn State (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten), which didn’t lead in the final 49 minutes of regulation. The Nittany Lions came back three times to tie it in the final 20 minutes, including Nicholas Singleton’s 14-yard TD reception with 2:53 left.
Quinten Joyner scored two early TDs for the Trojans (3-3, 1-3), who have lost three of four. USC hasn’t beaten a top-five team since the Trojans held off No. 5 Penn State in a 52-49 thriller of a Rose Bowl in January 2017.
Warren racked up 224 yards and a touchdown, although his only catch after the third quarter was a 3-yarder in overtime. The senior set a record for the most receptions by an opponent in USC’s 137-year football history.
The Nittany Lions started slowly on their long road trip, but finished impressively. After going up 3-0 on its first drive, Penn State didn’t lead again in regulation and trailed 20-6 at halftime before its offense got moving.
USC’s Kyron Hudson caught a go-ahead touchdown pass from Miller Moss with 5:56 left, but Allar converted two fourth downs with desperate passes for Penn State before Singleton was left all alone for his tying catch.
USC drove to midfield in the final seconds, but Lincoln Riley curiously used no timeouts extend the Trojans’ drive before Jaylen Reed picked off Moss with 5 seconds left.
USC went 3 yards backward on its first three plays of overtime before Michael Lantz missed a 45-yard field goal attempt. Penn State advanced to the 19, and Barker buried the winner.
Moss passed for 220 yards and two scores, while Joyner rushed for a 75-yard TD in the first quarter and caught a 9-yard TD pass in the second quarter for the Trojans. Woody Marks rushed for 111 yards for USC.
Penn State had a healthy contingent of fans at the Coliseum for its first lengthy road trip in the new Big Ten and its longest trip for any regular-season game since 1991.
But USC’s defense kept Penn State out of the end zone in the first half despite playing without injured linebacker Eric Gentry, its sacks leader and second-leading tackler, and starting cornerback Jacobe Covington.
Joyner put the Trojans ahead early when he faked a reverse and rumbled 75 yards through the heart of Penn State’s defense. He added his first career TD catch moments later.
