Commanders 40-7 Panthers (Oct 20, 2024) Game Recap

Commanders 40-7 Panthers (Oct 20, 2024) Game Recap

LANDOVER, Md. — — Jayden Daniels’ health was the first thing on Marcus Mariota’s mind when he went into the game for the injured rookie quarterback. Then he just played football like he has his whole life.

After Daniels left with a rib injury, the Washington Commanders routed the Carolina Panthers 40-7 on Sunday behind two touchdown passes from Mariota and a 67-yard pick-6 of Andy Dalton by Dante Fowler.

“It takes a little bit to kind of get your feet going and all that, but, yeah, you’re just thinking about the player first and then from there you just go out there and try to to execute,” said Mariota, who was 18 of 23 for 205 yards with TD passes to tight ends Zach Ertz and Ben Sinnott.

Concern over Daniels’ status overshadowed the victory after the No. 2 pick and offensive rookie of the year favorite left with a rib injury. His mother posted on social media that “he’s fine,” but coach Dan Quinn said only that he had no update and that Daniels would undergo further tests Monday.

The Commanders (5-2) did just fine without Daniels for a vast majority of the game after he had a 46-yard run and completed a couple of passes on their opening possession. They already led at that point thanks to Fowler’s pick-6, Andy Dalton’s first of two interceptions, the second by Emmanuel Forbes, who returned from being a healthy scratch last week.

After after catching his first interception of any kind in the NFL, Fowler saw open field and thought, “It’s time to go score a touchdown.”

“Man, it was like I was in a dream,” Fowler said.

The defense dominated, allowing 180 yards, stopping seven of 10 third-down chances and sacking Dalton twice.

With Mariota running the show, Washington chugged along and racked up 421 yards against the Panthers (1-6), who allowed the most points through of any team in the Super Bowl era through the first six games of a season.

“Between giving the ball way and just not being able to get off the field, I think they scored on all but one drive,” said Carolina coach Dave Canales, who committed to Dalton starting next week over 2023 No. 1 pick Bryce Young.

Brian Robinson Jr. also ran for a touchdown in his return from a knee injury, which caused him to miss the game last week at Baltimore — his team’s first loss since the opener. The 27-point halftime lead was the franchise’s biggest since being up 28-0 on Dallas on Dec. 18, 2005.

Carolina’s lost season continued five games into Dalton supplanting Young as the starting QB. Dalton finished 11 of 16 for 93 yards, and Young entered in mop-up duty with 4:55 left, completing two passes for negative yardage.

“It got out of our hands quick,” Dalton said. “We have to look ourselves in the mirror and say, ‘Why do these games keep going like this?’ I think that’s the biggest thing.”

Chuba Hubbard was limited to 52 yards on 17 carries after averaging averaging over 100 over the past four weeks. He ran for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter long after the outcome was decided and fans who were doing the wave earlier long departed to beat the traffic.

“At the end of the day, we won handily and I think the defense did an unbelievable job,” said Terry McLaurin, Washington’s leading receiver with six catches for 98 yards.

Injuries

Panthers: RB Raheem Blackshear left with a shoulder injury from a kickoff return midway through the third quarter. … TE Tommy Tremble (back) was inactive after being listed as questionable.

Commanders: In addition to losing Daniels, rookie LT Brandon Coleman was concussed in the first half.

Up next

Panthers: At Denver next Sunday.

Commanders: Host Chicago next Sunday.

Jets vs. Steelers Game Recap 10/20/2024

Jets vs. Steelers Game Recap 10/20/2024

Already down three defensive backfield starters in CB D.J. Reed (groin), nickel back Michael Carter II (back) and safety Chuck Clark (IR, ankle), the Jets lost safety Tony Adams to a hamstring injury. Gardner, who was out of the game for Pickens’ second quarter TD, started the game with Brandin Echols at CB, Isaiah Oliver and Jalen Mills at safety. Ashtyn Davis replaced T. Adams (hamstring) in the second stanza only to go out with a head injury in the second half.

Things got away from the Jets in the second half. R. Wilson’s 37- and 21-yard completions to Pickens and TE Pat Freiermuth set up a Boswell chip shot from 21 yards out as the Steelers hopped ahead at 16-15.

“Going to this game momentum, we knew, was going to be a big part of it,” Ulbrich said. “Especially the environment we’re playing in. And in these games, you can’t give up those big plays because it’s just this huge shift in momentum.”

Then Rodgers threw a perfect ball to Garrett Wilson, but it snuck up on the third-year wideout and bounced off his chest into the waiting hands of Bishop. His 41-yard return to the NYJ 1-yard line set up R. Wilson’s 1-yard sneak and it was a 23-15 game. On the ensuing drive, Rodgers got the Jets to Steelers 17 but points proved elusive as Greg Zeurlein’s 35-yard field goal attempt was blocked. Thirteen plays later, R. Wilson hit Van Jefferson, son of Jets WR coach Shawn Jefferson, for a 4-yard TD and Pittsburgh suddenly had doubled up the Jets, 30-15. Najee Harris, who rushed for 102 yards on 21 carries, ending the scoring with a 10-yard score with 26 seconds left.

“We just weren’t taking our layups,” Hall said. “I feel like we were just making it hard for ourselves and that was really frustrating. We were still able to move the ball up and down the field but we just weren’t able to score points. It sucks when we get to the red zone and just aren’t able to convert how we need too. We have just got to be better there.”

Jetcetera
OL Xavier Newman, who replaced RT Alijah Vera-Tucker (ankle), left the field on a stretcher after landing hard following a Patrick Queen block on Beanie Bishop‘s second INT. … Wideout Davante Adams, acquired Tuesday from the Raiders in exchange for a 2025 conditional third-round pick, was on the field for 27 of the Jets’ 29 plays in the first half. For the game, Adams was targeted 9 times and had 30 yards on 3 receptions. … WR George Pickens was a productive vertical threat throughout, averaging 22.2 yards on his 5 catches for 111 yards yards.

Not only was safety Jalen Mills elevated from the practice squad for a second consecutive week but Mills got the start at safety alongside Tony Adams. Mills was credited with 7 tackles, 1 TFL and 1 PD … Breece Hall led the Jets with 103 receiving yards on 6 grabs. … The Jets’ 15-13 lead after two quarters was the team’s third halftime advantage over the Steelers in 13 games at Pittsburgh. … Pittsburgh rushed 36 times for 149 yards (4.1 yds/att) and 2 TDs while New York was limited to 54 yards on ground on its 15 attempts (3.6 yds/att). … The Jets (2-5) will look to snap their four-game losing streak next weekend, when they play in New England as they eye a divisional sweep over the Patriots (1-6).

Notre Dame 31-13 Georgia Tech (Oct 19, 2024) Game Recap

Notre Dame 31-13 Georgia Tech (Oct 19, 2024) Game Recap

ATLANTA — — Riley Leonard bolstered No. 12 Notre Dame’s playoff hopes by rushing for two touchdowns and the Fighting Irish defense was dominant after a slow start in a 31-13 win over Georgia Tech on Saturday.

Jeremiyah Love added a TD run and defensive back Adon Shuler scored on a 36-yard interception return for Notre Dame (6-1). The Fighting Irish held Georgia Tech (5-3) to 64 rushing yards.

Leonard ran for 51 yards as Notre Dame extended its winning streak to five games. Leonard completed 20 of 29 passes for 203 yards with an interception in the game played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons. He recovered from a first-quarter interception that helped the Yellow Jackets take a 7-0 lead.

“It’s very easy to get greedy and want to make the explosive play, but throughout my career, I’ve learned that just taking what the defense gives me is what wins ballgames,” Leonard said. “… Settle down, trust your eyes, trust your coaching and you get the job done. And we did a pretty good job with that.”

Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman said Leonard “came back with the right mindset” after giving up the interception to cornerback Warren Burrell midway through the first quarter.

“He’s confident. … He’s a confident individual because of the way he prepares. And, you know, he did a great job after that interception leading the offense.”

With Haynes King held out with a shoulder injury, quarterback Zach Pyron was sharp early in his first start for Georgia Tech since his 2022 freshman season.

Pyron completed his first nine passes, including six completions on a touchdown drive. Jamal Haynes’ 1-yard scoring run as time expired in the first quarter gave the Yellow Jackets the 7-0 lead. Notre Dame led 31-7 before Pyron’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Chase Lane with 33 seconds remaining.

Georgia Tech coach Brent Key said Pyron’s effort was “gutsy.”

“The guy is tough as nails,” Key said. “We’ve got to be able to step up around him and complement him and help him.”

Led by Leonard, the Fighting Irish owned the second quarter with nine plays of 10 or more yards. Leonard’s first scoring run from the 1 capped a 14-play drive. He added another TD run from the 12, giving the senior 10 rushing scores this season.

Special teams woes

Georgia Tech muffed a 39-yard field goal attempt with 11 seconds remaining in the half when David Shanahan dropped the snap. Late in the third quarter, Notre Dame’s Bryce Young blocked a 35-yard attempt by Aidan Birr.

“Special teams for three weeks now have not been up to expectations,” Key said.

Leading 21-7, the Fighting Irish faked a punt and Love gained 27 yards to set up Zac Yoakam’s 42-yard field goal, the first of his career. Yoakam filled in for Mitch Jeter, who missed the game with a hip injury.

The takeaway

Notre Dame: Defense played the lead role, even after giving up Pyron’s 60-yard pass to Abdul Janneh to the Notre Dame 16 late in the third quarter. A third-down sack of Pyron by Rylie Mills set up Young’s blocked field goal. Safety Xavier Watts added a fourth-quarter interception, his third of the season.

Georgia Tech: Pyron couldn’t maintain the momentum from his strong first quarter, throwing two interceptions and one scoring pass. He completed 20 of 36 passes for 269 yards.

Poll Implications

Notre Dame could move up in the Top 25 following the impressive road win over the Yellow Jackets, who were coming off two straight Atlantic Coast Conference wins over Duke and North Carolina.

Up next

Notre Dame: Plays in another NFL stadium next Saturday against No. 25 Navy at MetLife Stadium, home of the New York Giants and New York Jets.

Georgia Tech: Returns to its Atlantic Coast Conference schedule when it plays at Virginia Tech next Saturday.

Miami 52-45 Louisville (Oct 19, 2024) Game Recap

Miami 52-45 Louisville (Oct 19, 2024) Game Recap

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — — Cam Ward’s offensive line gave him plenty of time to throw on some big plays. On others, he created the extra time he needed to find his target on his own.

The combination kept No. 6 Miami ahead and eventually created opportunities for teammates to win a shootout to remember.

Ajay Allen followed Ward’s fourth touchdown pass with a 2-yard, go-ahead score early in the fourth quarter, Damien Martinez added a 30-yard insurance TD run with 4:05 remaining and the Hurricanes held off Louisville for a wild 52-45 victory on Saturday.

A series recently defined by high scoring added its most exciting chapter thanks to Ward, who completed a bunch of explosive plays on the way to a school-record seventh consecutive 300-yard passing performance. More importantly, the Hurricanes (7-0, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) are off to their best start since beginning 10-0 in 2017.

And the Heisman Trophy candidate made sure to credit everybody for making it happen.

“We got one of the best O-lines, one of the best receiving corps, got a great OC,” Ward said, referring to offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson. “All I do is put the ball in play. You see today I’m throwing to wide-open people and they make contested catches when they need to.

“At the end of day, we just have to continue to do the little things. If we do the little things right, all the other plays that we have, explosive plays, those take care of themselves.”

The Hurricanes withstood several Louisville rallies from double-digit deficits, the last of which was Tyler Shough’s 4-yard TD pass to Duke Watson that tied the game at 38 early in the fourth. Ward followed by hitting Samuel Brown for 59 yards, setting up Allen’s go-ahead score with 11:17 remaining.

“We knew it was going to be back and forth,” Miami coach Mario Cristobal said. “This is a win against a really good team.”

Martinez’s bullish TD run provided a cushion, though Shough’s 4-yard scoring pass to Ja’Corey Brooks with 54 seconds left got them within a touchdown. Ward knelt three times to close out the thrilling road win and reclaim the Schnellenberger Trophy, awarded to the winner between programs coached by legendary Howard Schnellenberger.

Ward completed 21 of 32 passes for 319 yards to break the Miami record for consecutive 300-yard games most recently held by Tyler Van Dyke in 2021. Ward is four away from the Miami all-time record for 300-yard games, a mark of 11 shared by Van Dyke and Brad Kaaya.

Xavier Restrepo had nine catches for 101 yards and a TD, and Jacolby George and Brown caught scoring passes of 27 and 49 yards respectively as the ‘Canes outgained Louisville 538-448. Brown led Miami with 125 yards on three receptions.

Shough completed 31 of 51 for 342 yards and four scores as well for the Cardinals (4-3, 2-2). Brooks had six catches for 107 yards.

“We had some chances,” Louisville coach Jeff Brohm said. “I do think our guys played hard, but it wasn’t good enough. We definitely have not gotten off to good starts. I applaud our team for hanging in there and playing to the end, but we’ve got to play better football.”

There was defense

For all the yardage compiled by both teams, their defenses contributed key takeaways that factored in the outcome. Miami linebacker Raul Aguirre Jr. might have made the biggest with an end-zone recovery of Isaac Brown’s fumble caused by Simeon Barrow’s perfectly-placed helmet hit on the ball that provided a 24-14 lead in the second quarter.

Louisville’s Thor Griffith jarred the ball from Mark Fletcher Jr. that Jordan Guerad recovered at the Miami 26, leading to Brooks’ 21-yard TD pass from Shough.

Money-down payoffs

Miami converted 9 of 15 third-down chances, including Ward’s TD pass to Restrepo. The ‘Canes also made both fourth-down opportunities. Louisville converted all three of its fourth-down chances but was just 3 of 12 on third down.

The Takeaway

Miami: After comeback wins over Virginia Tech and Cal, the Hurricanes had to beat back Louisville a lot. Ward bought time and found receivers, and the nation’s top offense continued doing what it does with a balanced attack that also rushed for 219 yards. That keeps them in the ACC mix.

Louisville: Every time the Cardinals seemed down and out against Ward and the ‘Canes, they answered with a gutsy scoring drive. The defense certainly helped with a takeaway and key defensive stands, just not enough to stop Miami’s ground game from taking over in the fourth quarter. They’ve now lost three of four and the challenge now is salvaging the remainder of a daunting schedule.

Up Next

Miami: hosts in-state rival Florida State in ACC play.

Louisville: visits Boston College on Friday night with a short turnaround.

Get ready for Sunday’s matchup between the Las Vegas Raiders vs. the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium.

Fans are keeping a close eye on Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp, who has been recovering from an ankle injury. Rams head coach Sean McVay told reporters this week that Kupp’s recovery is “trending in the right direction” and didn’t rule out a return on Sunday.

“He’s feeling good, and the important thing is, what we’ve got to dictate and determine is, is he going to be ready to play like Cooper Kupp’s capable of playing? He’s making good progress. I think we’ll get a good feel. This will be the first time that you’re able to do football-like movements in some of the individual settings,” McVay said.

Meanwhile, the Raiders are navigating the field without wide receiver Davante Adams after agreeing to trade him to the New York Jets. Adams had been out the past few games with a hamstring injury.

How the Lynx won Game 4, forced WNBA Finals to winner-take-all

How the Lynx won Game 4, forced WNBA Finals to winner-take-all

Of course it’s going to five.

The 2024 WNBA Finals have been a roller coaster full of close finishes and big-time plays. So it’s only fitting that one of the most thrilling championship series in recent memory will go the distance. The Minnesota Lynx’s 82-80 Game 4 victory Friday against the New York Liberty ensured a winner-take-all showdown Sunday (8 p.m. ET, ESPN) at Barclays Center.

Unlike the historic comebacks that defined Games 1 and 3, Game 4 was a back-and-forth affair, with 14 lead changes and 13 ties. No team led by more than six points.

New York had an opportunity to take the lead in the final minute but missed three shots in one possession, which ended on a shot clock violation. It seemed like a second overtime game of this Finals was imminent, but Bridget Carleton drew a foul with 2.0 seconds left after getting an offensive rebound on a Courtney Williams missed shot. The Lynx forward hit both free throws to put Minnesota ahead for good and send the series back to New York.

ESPN breaks down how the Lynx evened the series and what to expect in what should be an iconic end to the Finals on Sunday.

WNBA Finals Game 4s in a New York uniform haven’t been kind to Stewart. After she shot 3-for-17 from the field a year ago when the Las Vegas Aces clinched the title, Stewart’s night Friday was nearly as tough. She scored 11 points on 5-for-21 shooting (and missed all four 3-point attempts) — one game after Stewart was the dominant force Wednesday with 30 points and 11 rebounds.

Minnesota’s defense is the biggest reason there will be a Game 5. The Lynx sent more defenders at Stewart earlier in possessions Friday. Whenever she caught the ball inside the 3-point line, Stewart had to contend with two defenders, one to prevent a quick-release jumper, the other to cut off a driving lane. It was a case of a veteran coach implementing a game plan that only a savvy and team-oriented defense could execute possession after possession.

Stewart did get some open looks that she missed, but the Lynx — led by Napheesa Collier, the WNBA’s defensive player of the year — deserve most of the credit. — Creme

Liberty coach Sandy Brondello lashes out at officials: ‘Just be fair!’

New York Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello doesn’t hold back in the postgame news conference, blasting the officiating in her team’s narrow defeat.

Sandy Brondello was critical of Friday’s officiating, saying, “We got no calls.” Did the officiating affect the outcome of Game 4?

No team won or lost because of the foul disparity Friday. Stewart was the only player in foul trouble, and she still managed to play 33 minutes. Yes, Minnesota had more opportunities at the free throw line, but Stewart’s and Sabrina Ionescu’s shooting struggles (a combined 10-for-36 from the field, 0-for-9 from 3) had more to do with the Liberty’s inability to close it out. New York had three shots on its last full offensive possession and wasn’t able to convert any of them.

Brondello might have wanted to respond after Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve called out the officiating the night before during interviews, but she will be more focused on cleaning up things offensively and helping her team overcome some of their turnover problems — those continued into Friday’s game (16 turnovers for 19 points). — Philippou

Kayla McBride on Game 4 win: Everyone gave all they had

Kayla McBride reflects on the Lynx’s thrilling Game 4 win over the Liberty in the WNBA Finals.

What impact did role players have on Game 4?

Remarkably, Minnesota pulled off its biggest win of the season with zero points in the fourth quarter from either Collier or Williams. Kayla McBride had a good night with a team-leading 19 points, but she was quiet in the second half with only five. Alanna Smith and Carleton scored seven of Minnesota’s last nine points and delivered in the clutch. They each finished with 12 points and combined for 11 rebounds. The Lynx even got an important 10 minutes defensively from Dorkha Juhasz, who had played only two minutes in the previous three games.

That New York almost left Minnesota with a championship despite Stewart’s tough night is a testament to the contributions of Leonie Fiebich, who had 19 points, seven of which came in the fourth quarter. — Creme

Cecilia Zandalasini delivered another clutch performance. The Minnesota forward finished with plus-6 plus/minus (with six points and four rebounds in 16 minutes). She is the only player from the 2017 Lynx championship team still on the roster, returning to the league after a five-year hiatus.

“Ceci is tough. Goes through a stretch of games where maybe she’s not contributing like she wants to contribute, and then all of a sudden we had a Ceci sighting at shootaround the other day, and these last two games, really helping us.” Reeve said Friday. “We’ve always tried to get her back here. Timing was good for this one, and she’s been a great fit for us.” — Philippou

Stewart has a history of bouncing back. What do you expect from her Sunday?

It would be no surprise to see Stewart looking completely different Sunday. In the regular season, her lowest point total in a game was eight points. Two days later, she had 31 points and 10 rebounds. An 11-point game late in the season was followed by 38 the next. Stewart’s low for the playoffs was 13 in Game 2 against Atlanta in the first round — she then opened the semifinals against Las Vegas with 34 points.

At this point, a bounce-back game is almost a calling card. Stewart might not hit 30 points in Game 5, but she will be much better. — Creme

Who has the advantage in Game 5?

In a series like this, “who knows” might be the safest answer. Both teams have plenty of positives to take away from Friday. Minnesota won despite not getting a great game from Collier. The Lynx also will have gained confidence on how to contain Stewart. Smith looked healthy after a back injury in Game 3. That should make Reeve more certain of her rotations and bench minutes.

The Liberty can take solace in the fact they nearly stole one with Stewart having one of the worst games of her career. They also know she is a counter puncher who often finds a way to bounce back. Jones played more confidently as well.

Momentum? Edge to Minnesota. Home court? Edge to New York. Flip a coin and hope that Game 5 is just as entertaining as the previous four. — Creme

It should be New York being back on its home court, but with the way the first four games of the series have gone, I don’t think anything would surprise me at this point. — Philippou

Who wins BYU-Oklahoma State game? – Deseret News

Who wins BYU-Oklahoma State game? – Deseret News

Note: With EA Sports’ College Football 25 bringing college football back to the video game world, the Deseret News is simulating every BYU game against an FBS opponent this season.

BYU heads into the second half of the season riding high.

The Cougars are 6-0, ranked No. 13 in the country and are tied with two other teams at 3-0 atop the Big 12 Conference.

Get an inclusive look inside BYU Football’s 1984 National Championship season.

That means a matchup against 3-3 Oklahoma State on Friday night should be easy, right?

Maybe not. The Cowboys, though they’ve lost three straight games, started the year in the top 15 and were a favorite to win the Big 12, but they’ve hit tough times.

How will Friday’s game between the two play out?

The Deseret News ran a simulation of Friday’s game on the EA Sports College Football 25 video game — and the matchup went back and forth with a finish that will keep fans in the stands.

How the simulation was set up

There were a couple of ground rules in place: The simulation used 12-minute quarters — I bumped that up from using 10 minutes during the first half of the year, to better reflect an accurate number of possessions per game — and I let the computer simulate the game with no user interference.

CPU ratings have also been adjusted a bit from the standard to make pass defense more realistic — I adjusted the passing accuracy from 50 to 35, then adjusted pass defense ratings from 50 to 80. That helped to create more realistic numbers.

Injuries and depth chart movement were also implemented.

The Cougars played with a full stable of running backs in last week’s win over Arizona, and they are all available again this week.

Wide receiver Kody Epps was kept out for a second-straight week, and with center Connor Pay still sidelined with a broken foot, Bruce Mitchell replaced him at center again for BYU. Also, with Sonny Makasini out at guard and Austin Leausa not in the video game, Jake Eichorn was slotted in at right guard.

Oklahoma State is reportedly going with redshirt sophomore Garret Rangel at quarterback — it’s his first start of the season.

The Cowboys also have a pair of star linebackers missing, with Collin Oliver and Nick Martin injured.

The uniforms both teams will be wearing were also implemented into the simulation.

BYU is going with a royal blue jersey with white helmet, white facemark and white pants, all adorned with royal trim. Oklahoma State did not announce any uniform decisions, so I used their traditional road white uniforms with the orange script helmet.

Though it’s been forecasted to be rainy Friday night much of the week, the forecast the day of the game no longer calls for rain during the contest, so I made it overcast at kickoff.

How accurate was the simulation of BYU’s last game?

The actual score: BYU 41, Arizona 19

College Football 25 simulation final score: BYU 20, Arizona 15

My analysis: The simulation was a bit more conservative offensively than what the final score ended up being, though at least through halftime in the actual game, it appeared it may be accurate.

The Cougars led the Wildcats 14-7 at the break in last Saturday’s game before extending their lead early in the second half thanks to two turnovers from Arizona.

In the simulation, BYU had to hold strong on a late rally before forcing a turnover to win.

How did the simulation between BYU and Oklahoma State play out?

Final score: BYU 41, Oklahoma State 33

Key sequence: In a game where there was plenty of offensive fireworks, it was a defensive play that won it for BYU.

The Cougars saw a 35-24 lead trimmed to two points with 7:14 to play on a Brennan Presley 20-yard touchdown reception, and Oklahoma State opted to go for two to try and tie the score.

Rangel, though, was stopped for a loss on a quarterback draw, and BYU marched on a long drive following that before putting the game away in the final minutes.

How the simulation transpired: After a couple early punts and turnovers, this game was mostly about offense.

The Cougars got on the board first, as linebacker Sione Moa intercepted Rangel on the game’s third play and scored on a 32-yard pick-six less than a minute into the game.

After two Oklahoma State punts and one from BYU, the Cougars had a promising drive going before Chase Roberts lost a fumble after a catch and Oklahoma State recovered at its own 35.

Cowboys running back Ollie Gordon II took over on the next drive, turning four straight touches into 40-plus yards gained, and his 4-yard run on third and two pushed Oklahoma State to the BYU 14 with one minute left in the first quarter.

On the next play, Rangel found De’Zhaun Stribling for a 14-yard touchdown pass to tie the game.

The Cougars were outscored 14-7 in the second quarter — Oklahoma State used two long drives to score touchdowns, while BYU cashed in once but had a Will Ferrin 51-yard field goal attempt that missed wide right as the half expired.

BYU scored on a 7-yard LJ Martin run with 7:56 until halftime, capping a 75-yard drive where BYU twice converted third down.

The Cowboys struck back, though, moving the ball downfield and scoring on a 14-yard Rashod Owens catch to end an 11-play, 82-yard drive and make it 14-14.

On the ensuing possession, Jake Retzlaff was sacked on third down to force a punt, and Oklahoma State quickly capitalized, moving the ball downfield quickly before scoring on a 4-yard Stribling catch with 46 seconds until halftime.

The Cougars regained control in the third quarter, though, using two quick drives to regain the lead.

BYU took the opening possession of the second half and scored in three plays, as Parker Kingston caught a 39-yard pass from Retzlaff. The drive covered 84 yards in 57 seconds.

After an Oklahoma State three and out, BYU again struck quickly. This time, a five-play drive ended with Keanu Hill catching an 8-yard touchdown pass. The possession included catches of 28 and 26 yards for Hill and Kingston, respectively, and BYU was up 28-21.

The Cowboys responded with a drive of their own that resulted in a 39-yard field goal, but BYU again had an answer.

This time, Hill caught a pass and ran the final 45 yards untouched on a 68-yard touchdown pass to make the score 35-24 for BYU heading into the fourth quarter.

Oklahoma State made the end interesting, hitting a field goal with just over 10 minutes to play to make it 35-27.

Then, after a BYU three and out, the Cowboys sliced through the Cougar defense and scored on a 24-yard Presley touchdown with 7:14 to play.

BYU, though, stopped the two-point conversion to maintain a 35-33 lead.

The Cougars then ate up more than five minutes off the clock on the ensuing possession and scored on a 29-yard field goal — a holding penalty inside the red zone forced the three-point attempt — with 1:49 to play.

BYU then stopped Oklahoma State deep in its end of the field on the ensuing possession, with Isaiah Bagnah sacking Rangel to force a long fourth down attempt, where Rangel threw incomplete.

The Cougars got the ball back with 45 seconds left and Oklahoma State only had two timeouts, but an unfortunate circumstance led to BYU needing to give the ball back.

On first down, a Cougar injury kept Oklahoma State from needing to call timeout, and then the Cowboys stopped two BYU runs and used its final two timeouts to put the Cougars in a fourth down situation with 30 seconds to play.

Ferrin added a 27-yard field goal to make it an 8-point game, and then the BYU defense held again.

A few plays into the drive, Rangel found Stribling to move the ball to BYU’s 49, but he couldn’t get out of bounds and the clock ran out before Oklahoma State could get a snap off.

Star players: Retzlaff had perhaps his best day as a Cougar, with 331 yards passing and three touchdowns, all in the third quarter.

Martin ran for 101 yards and the touchdown, while Hill made seven catches for 115 yards.

Jakob Robinson led the defense, finishing with 10 tackles, two tackles for loss and an interception.

Rangel threw for 266 yards and four touchdowns in his first start this year, but his two interceptions proved costly.

Gordon ran for 125 yards, with a 3.7 per-carry average, while Presley added nine catches for 126 yards.

Key stats: The Cougars held the edge in total yards, with 456 to 418 for the Cowboys.

Both teams found similar success on third down — BYU finished 7 of 13, while Oklahoma State was 7 of 16.

How realistic was the simulation?

My analysis: It felt like there was too much offense in this one, with both quarterbacks able to find open receivers without much trouble in critical situations during the second and third quarters.

It wouldn’t be surprising, though, for this to be a close game throughout.

The Cougars may have the edge, but the Cowboys are a dangerous team.
