Manchester United were left to rue missed chances and a truly baffling refereeing decision as the lost 2-1 at West Ham on Sunday to heap further pressure on Erik ten Hag.
Ten Hag’s side missed several glorious chances in the first half and then went behind in the second half as Crysencio Summerville finished for West Ham. Casemiro equalized soon after but in stoppage time VAR asked referee David Coote to go to the monitor for a possible foul by Matthijs de Ligt on Danny Ings and the referee awarded a penalty which Jarrod Bowen scored to win if for West Ham.
With the much-needed win Julen Lopetegui’s Hammers move to 11 points for the season as they move above Man United, who are also on 11 points and have now lost three of their first nine games.
Man United left to rue massive missed chances, once again
Okay, so it was never a penalty kick on De Ligt which ultimately lost Manchester United the game in second half stoppage time. But they should have been 3-0 up at half time, at least, as once again missing big chances came back to bite them. Erik ten Hag looked on in disbelief as Dalot missed an open goal, Fernandes missed a glorious chance, Garnacho missed another easy chance and hit the bar. That was all in the first half as Man United tore West Ham apart. But the second half was different as West Ham sat deeper, made a triple sub at half time which worked a treat to shore things up and United no longer got behind them with one long ball forward. All of the post-game talk will be about David Coote going to the monitor after VAR asked him to and awarding that controversial penalty kick, but Man United should never have been in the position to let that decision be so pivotal. Once again they missed big chances and as the pressure builds on Erik ten Hag, there’s only so much he can do. He’s setting this team up to create big chances and get in on goal but his players aren’t finishing and have scored just eight goals in nine games in the Premier League this season. Their xG total says they should have scored close to 15 and are the least clinical team in the league when it comes to xG to actual goals. That is why they’re in the mess they are in and are already six points off the top four.

West Ham vs Manchester United live updates! – By Joe Prince-Wright
Bowen slots home the penalty kick – West Ham 2-1 Manchester United
The West Ham skipper makes no mistake as he slams home into the bottom corner. That is a hugely controversial goal.
Bowen’s penalty gives West Ham lead v. Man United
Following a lengthy VAR review, Jarrod Bowen steps up to the penalty spot and drills his effort into the back of the net to give the Hammers a 2-1 lead over Manchester United.
VAR check for a possible penalty for West Ham
De Ligt bundled into Ings in the box but there isn’t much there. However, after a check on the monitor the referee awards a penalty kick. Drama!
Casemiro heads home! – West Ham 1-1 Manchester United
A clipped ball is headed back in to the mix, substitute Zirkzee heads it towards goal and and Casemiro heads home. United level late on!
Casemiro heads Manchester United level v. West Ham
Casemiro heads in a close-range effort to put Manchester United back on level terms against West Ham in the second half at London Stadium.
Hojlund misses his header and Fabianski saves
A cross into the box is dangerous but Hojlund misses his header and Fabianski claws it clear and saves the rebound.
Summerville puts West Ham ahead! – West Ham 1-0 Manchester United
A cross from Bowen sets up a chance for Ings and his scuffed shot falls straight to Summerville who finishes at the back post. His first goal for West Ham is a big one. He’s been excellent since coming on at half time. West Ham lead with just over 15 minutes to go!
Summerville gives West Ham 1-0 lead v. Man United
Crysencio Summerville makes a far post run and is able to get enough on his shot to beat Andre Onana to give the Hammers a 1-0 lead over the Red Devils at London Stadium.
Ings is on for Antonio
West Ham are hoping Danny Ings can be their hero late on…
Emerson almost converts a cross
It is all West Ham now. The cross into the box finds Emerson but he can’t sort out his feet to steer the ball in and a big chance has come and gone for West Ham. Still, they are much more competitive. Rashford has been replaced by Diallo but United have yet to get going in the second half.
Antonio curls just wide
Much, much better from West Ham so far in the second half. Michal Antonio curls just wide. The Hammers look more comfortable and are playing much deeper. That triple sub of Summerville, `Todibo and Soucek coming on at half time has had a big impact.
Onana is down getting lengthy treatment
Andre Onana comes sliding out to get the ball and just as he gets there in front of Michail Antonio he gets a clip on the head from the West Ham forward he can’t get out of the way. After lengthy checks, Onana is okay to continue and Antonio apologies for the incident. It was purely accidental and it’s great to see Onana is okay to continue.
Half time: West Ham 0-0 Manchester United
Somehow Man United aren’t ahead, but don’t ask me how. From Garnacho hitting the bar and missing a glorious chance, to Bruno Fernandes missing a big chance, Diogo Dalot missing an open goal and both Casemiro and Hojlund denied, United could be out of sight by now. But West Ham are somehow level and have had the odd chance from crosses and counters. West Ham have been very poor defensively and United continue to open them up with one long ball over the top. Surely the Hammers won’t be that open in the second half.
Fabianski denies Casemiro’s header
That is a top stop from Fabianski. Eriksen whips in a free kick and Casemiro flicks a header on which looks destined for the far corner but the veteran goalkeeper palms it away and West Ham clear.
Dalot misses an open goal!
Bruno Fernandes chips a perfect ball over the top and Diogo Dalot is in. He knocks it past Fabianski and has an open goal but he loops his shot off target with West Ham defenders rushing to get back on the line. Dalot has got it all wrong there. Yet another glorious opportunity wasted by Man United.
Hojlund denied and Fernandes should head home
West Ham are all over the place defensively as Hojlund turns and his low shot is saved well by Fabianski. Moments later a cross finds Bruno Fernandes totally unmarked but he heads wide from eight yards out. He should be scoring. United could have scored four already inside the first 15 minutes!
Another brilliant chance for United
United once again are in but Garnacho curls his shot wide of the far post. Again, he should be scoring. West Ham have been let off the hook twice early on.
Garnacho smashes the crossbar!
An awful ball out of the back is pounced on by United and the ball is played in to Garnacho in the box. He curls it towards the top corner with a first time effort but it hits the bar and comes back out. Garnacho should be finishing that. Huge chance inside the first three minutes for United.

West Ham vs Manchester United prediction
Scoring chances will likely be at a premium, whether by design and/or lack of creativity between the sides, and West Ham don’t have the feel of a team that wants to roll up their sleeves and get dirty. For their considerable shortcomings, desire and effort are never a problem for United. West Ham 0-1 Manchester United.
West Ham vs Manchester United preview
Back-to-back wins would be a swell start to an unexpected rescue mission after the Red Devils (12th place – 11 points) came back from a goal down to beat Brentford last weekend. But to have any hope of surviving the intense, choppy seas of festive football on the horizon, Manchester Untied are going to have to score some bloody goals. Only three sides have scored fewer goals than Man United (7) though 8 games, and those sides currently sit 18th, 17th and 19th in the Premier League table. United, for their part, are only slightly better off in 12th with a -2 goal difference. Alejandro Garnacho has 2 goals and Bruno Fernandes has 2 assists, but no one else in the team has more than one goal or assist thus far.
West Ham (15th – 8 points) are off to a rather poor start of their own, as only three sides have conceded more goals than the Hammer (15) through 8 games, perhaps hitting rock bottom last weekend as they were beaten 4-1 by rivals Tottenham and star attacker Mohammed Kudus was sent off for violent conduct which is expected to lead to a lengthier ban. The defensive woes are hardly new, though, as Julen Lopetegui took over in the summer and inherited a team from David Moyes that conceded 74 times in 38 games last season (4th-most). Max Kilman ($51 million) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka ($19 million) were signed in a busy summer transfer window, but the defensive issues persist nonetheless.

It’s a huge match for West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui as the struggling Hammers host Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United at the London Stadium.
Life in east London as David Moyes’ successor hasn’t quite gone to plan for Lopetegui, with last weekend’s damaging derby defeat to rival Spurs leaving West Ham in the lower reaches of the EPL on just eight points. While the Hammers have no trouble scoring, their frailties in midfield and defence has been costing them dearly, with the hosts having kept just one clean sheet so far this season.
That presents an opportunity for a United side currently in the unfamiliar surroundings of the lower half of the table. Last weekend’s 2-1 comeback win over Brentford no doubt helped ease the pressure on ten Hag, but as Thursday’s 1-1 Europa League draw with Fenerbahce showed, the Red Devils have lost the knack of winning from leading positions.

How to watch the Premier League 2024/25 season from anywhere with a VPN
If you find yourself unable to view EPL matches locally, you may need a different way to watch the games — that’s where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds on game day by encrypting your traffic, and it’s also a great idea if you’re traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.
With a VPN, you’re able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the game. Most VPNs, like our Editors’ Choice, ExpressVPN, make it really easy to do this.
Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the U.S., UK and Canada, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you’re streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

ExpressVPN is our current best VPN pick for people who want a reliable and safe VPN, and it works on a variety of devices. It’s normally $13 a month, but if you sign up for an annual subscription for $100 you’ll get three months free and save 49%. That’s the equivalent of $6.67 a month with code SPECIALDEAL, which should be automatically applied.
Note that ExpressVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Can I livestream West Ham vs. Man United in the UK?
Sunday’s early afternoon kickoff at the London Stadium has not been selected for broadcast by a UK broadcaster.
That also means that if you’re in the UK traveling for pleasure or for work, you’re unlikely to be able to watch the game like you normally would at home, thanks to geoblocking.
There’s one option to get around this. By using a VPN, as explained above, you can set your location to a country where the match is being broadcast and go from there.

Quick tips for streaming the Premier League using a VPN
With four variables at play — your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN — your experience and success when streaming EPL matches may vary.
If you don’t see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the “search for city or country” option.
If you’re having trouble getting the game after you’ve turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs — like Roku — don’t have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you’ll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you’re using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network’s sports app, you’ll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
Remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you’re using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend Brave.
LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Luis Díaz scored two fine goals inside two minutes as Liverpool beat Bournemouth 3-0 to move to the top of the English Premier League on Saturday.
Arne Slot’s side leads Manchester City on goal difference only and the defending champion needs a draw at home to Arsenal in Sunday’s big game to reclaim first place.
On a rare quiet day for teammate Mohamed Salah in front of goal, Díaz scored off both feet to display his own finishing skills at Anfield.
The Colombia forward chased down a long pass from defender Ibrahima Konaté, controlled the ball exquisitely on his waist as he turned, and then glided past goalkeeper Kepa before sliding the ball into the bottom left corner in the 28th minute.
That was with his right foot, and his second goal came off his left in the 30th.
Liverpool broke from midfield and Trent Alexander-Arnold galloped forward before slipping the ball to Díaz inside the left of the penalty area and he clipped it neatly past Kepa.
Darwin Núñez scored a fine third in the 37th. Collecting the ball wide right he looked to cross it, before changing his mind and curling a fine shot in off the left post.
Newcastle misses chance to go top
Victory would have moved Newcastle to the top of the league but it lost at Fulham 3-1 to drop to sixth spot.
Fulham led early through Raúl Jiménez’s shot into the bottom right corner and a howler by goalie Nick Pope gifted Emile Smith Rowe Fulham’s second in the 22nd.
Harvey Barnes pulled one back after halftime but Reiss Nelson sealed victory in stoppage time.
Watkins inspires Villa turnaround
In-form England striker Ollie Watkins came to the rescue as Aston Villa bounced back to beat rock-bottom Wolverhampton 3-1 in a fiery derby match to move into third spot.
An awful pass from Diego Carlos gifted Matheus Cunha the opening goal.
Villa struggled to create anything against a winless team before Watkins levelled in the 73rd with a deflected finish for his fourth goal in three matches.
Ezri Konsa fired in a cross by Youri Tielemans in the 88th and Jhon Duran lived up to his super-sub reputation by netting in stoppage time. It was the fourth time this season the Colombia forward has come off the bench to score.
There was nearly 15 minutes of stoppage time at Villa Park due to a lengthy delay while Colombia defender Yerson Mosquera was treated for an injury before being taken off on a stretcher.
Villa is level on points with City but trails on goal difference, with both two points ahead of Chelsea.
Double delight for Jackson
Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson marked his 50th club appearance with two early goals to inspire his team to a 3-0 win at West Ham.
Jackson added an assist for Cole Palmer against a poor West Ham side which was booed at the end of the match by home fans. New West Ham coach Julen Lopetegui is under pressure after his third loss.
Chelsea’s three league wins have all come away from home.
Chelsea scored in the fourth minute when Jackson played a one-two with Jadon Sancho and surged forward before cutting in from the left and firing between goalie Alphonse Areola’s legs.
Jackson doubled his tally in the 18th after latching onto a Moises Caicedo throughball and drilling into the bottom left corner. He turned provider in the 47th for Palmer, who fired in off the left post.
Tottenham rallies to beat Brentford
Tottenham hit back to beat Brentford 3-1 after Bryan Mbuemo scored in the first minute for the visitors.
Dominic Solanke leveled from close range seven minutes later after James Maddison’s shot was saved.
Brennan Johnson put Spurs 2-1 ahead in the 28th on a pass from captain Son Heung-Min, who set up Maddison’s late goal.
Crossbar twice thwarts United
Manchester United remained midtable after squandering a host of chances in a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace.
After United winger Alejandro Garnacho had an early effort saved, defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez saw efforts saved by goalie Dean Henderson.
Midway through a frantic first half, Garnacho then hit the crossbar and midfielder Bruno Fernandes did likewise when he followed up.
The result left United in 11th place and Palace in 16th.
Still no win for struggling Saints
Southampton was denied its first win when visiting Ipswich scored in the fifth minute of injury time to draw 1-1.
Saints goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale saved Dara O’Shea’s header but Ipswich captain Sam Morsy scored from the ensuing corner with a fine 20-meter strike.
Veteran midfielder Adam Lallana set up 18-year-old midfielder Tyler Dibling early on for Southampton, which is in 18th place.
Everton again fails to protect lead
Everton leaked again when it drew 1-1 at Leicester, where torrential rain delayed the start of the second half by six minutes.
Everton lost its previous two games despite going 2-0 up.
This time it led 1-0 through Iliman Ndiaye’s 12th-minute goal only for forward Stephy Mavididi to equalize in the 73rd and leave Everton in 19th spot.

Despite mentioning that West Ham threat, Arne Slot was keen to highlight his Liverpool side’s strong performance. Once again to Sky Sports, he said:
💬 “I feel like we had control in most parts of the game. We had large parts of ball possession, especially in the first half.
“In the second half, we were there creating a few chances before we scored (to make it) 3-1 from Mo (Salah).
“That was a great team goal and then it was Cody time! He deserved that, like the others deserved it as well. Darwin (Nunez) worked really hard, but it was good to see Cody with such a fantastic shot.
“He also had a very important clearance in his own 18-yard box. That’s what I like to see.”
I’ll leave you with John Brewin’s match report from the London Stadium. Thanks for reading.
Also a 3-0 defeat for West Ham’s women today. Here’s the story of their loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford, courtesy of Tom Garry.
Rather strange that Michael Jackson got a mention on this blog before kick-off and Nicolas Jackson scored twice and then celebrated with a Michael Jackson dance. Think it was the Thriller one that Lenny Henry did but changed the words to “Aston Villa”. Villa at home to Wolves today by the way.
A reminder that we have six 3pm kick-offs in the Premier League this afternoon. Scott Murray will guide you through them.
Joe Cole calls it a “fantastic performance” from Chelsea. He continues: “They look like a club moving in the right direction. I’ve not seen Chelsea fans that happy in a while.”
FULL TIME! West Ham 0-3 Chelsea
And it’s all over. It was only going one way really after Nicolas Jackson put Chelsea ahead after just four minutes. And any hopes of a turnaround were snuffed out completely when Cole Palmer lashed one in straight after the break to make it 3-0.
A comprehensive win for Chelsea who climb to the giddy heights of second place. But trouble for West Ham and Lopetegui. Three home defeats to start his tenure is the stuff of nightmares.
90+3 Action at both ends. Kudus has a shot blocked before Joao Felix pulls a right-footer from the edge of the box not far wide.
90+2 min A yellow card for Soler who mistimes his tackle and catches Cucurella high on the inside of his knee. A painful one. But no red card.
90+1 min We’re into the first of four added minutes. Tubes filling up outside.
89 min Lucy Ward on co-comms gives the man-of-the-match to two-goal Nicolas Jackson.
88 min To quote Clinton Baptiste, spirits fading now. In terms of West Ham even getting a consolation goal, that is.
86 min Caicedo blocks Soler’s shot on the edge of the box. The Chelsea midfield holder has been strong today.
85 min Just scruffy bits and pieces from West Ham now in an attacking sense. Nothing clear-cut. Chelsea will want to keep hold of this clean sheet.
83 min Dewsbury-Hall comes on for Fernandez as Chelsea see the game out.
82 min A frustrated Antonio clatters into Caicedo and is booked. That’s six yellows now I think.
81 min West Ham fans are leaving in their droves although heads are cocked back towards the pitch when a cross comes in for Bowen. He can’t get on the end of it though and the march towards exit signs continues.
80 min The game moves into the final 10 minutes. West Ham not making any real impression now although Sanchez has to palm a Wan-Bissaka cross away. Summing the afternoon up, several West Ham players leave the loose ball for each other.
78 min Neto does take a conventional corner this time but it’s headed away. Lots of West Ham fans looking bemused. Telling body language. Furrowed brows.
77 min This is clearly no good for West Ham: 0-3 at home never is. But there’s scope here for a pummelling if Chelsea keep pushing. A 5-0 perhaps.
76 min Yellow card for Kilman for a hack on the slippery Joao Felix.
75 min Chelsea can’t be bothered to send corners in and instead work the ball around. It almost pays off but Areola makes one of those eye-catching scooping saves on the goalline to keep Nkunku’s header out from six yards out.
73 min Antonio tries a little near-post flick at a cross but it’s half-blocked and all the power goes. Chelsea break and add to their corner count.
71 min Sub time again for West Ham. Emerson and Paqueta go off and the Brazilian pair are replaced by Cresswell and debutant Andy Irving. The latter has a shot straight off the bat but it’s easy for Sanchez.
70 min Chelsea waste the corner and then Cucurella absolutely hacks Kudus to the floor. It’s a seven-roller. Perhaps more but the camera came away from him.
69 min The Chelsea corner count is rising fast. Neto’s pace is frightening and Mavropanos has to stretch every sinew to deflect his cross behind.
68 min Chelsea take a short corner this time which comes to nothing. At the other end, Kudus chips a cross into the area but Sanchez gobbles it up. Two more subs on the way for West Ham.
67 min Chelsea win a corner from a deflected Caicedo shot. Neto comes across to take it and Areola has to punch clear from under his crossbar. The Chelsea substitutes are hungry and keen to make an impression. The visitors win another corner.
65 min Neto makes his first burst down the left, showing a clean pair of heels to the West Ham defence. The ball breaks back to Fernandez and that’s so nearly the fourth as the side-netting ripples from his shot from 20 yards or so. Chelsea are looking hungry for more.
63 min Maresca takes off goalscorers Jackson and Palmer, the latter looking a little surprised. Joao Felix and Nkunku are pretty decent replacements. The players are certainly there for Chelsea if they can be co-ordinated correctly. And they are today.
62 min Most of Antonio’s runs are buccaneering and this one earns a corner. Sanchez punches Bowen’s delivery away and Chelsea burst clear once more. Here we go again … is this the fourth? … not quite as Madueke slams a left-foot shot too near Areola.
60 min Chelsea are finding it so easy to get from one penalty box to the other. Palmer tries to thread a ball through but Jackson and Madueke rather get in each other’s way. A reprieve for West Ham this time.
59 min Lopetegui continues to look like man ready to have a fierce row and perhaps even a fight in a car park. The fourth official is getting it in the ear. West Ham win a corner down the left.
An early double from Nicolas Jackson set the visitors on course before Cole Palmer added a third in the second half to make certain of victory for Enzo Maresca’s side. After an unsettled start to the season amid off-field chaos and on-field questions, this was a third win on the bounce for Chelsea as they continue to show signs of real promise under their new manager. Jadon Sancho, making his first start, again impressed while the sometimes profligate Jackson took both of his goals nicely.
It was a rather more fretful afternoon for Julen Lopetegui, the West Ham boss casting a frustrated figure on the touchline. Midfielder Guido Rodriguez was hooked after just 35 minutes as Lopetegui tried unsuccessfully to spark his side into life. Audible boos were heard at half time while plenty of home fans headed for the exit with 15 minutes still to play after another lacklustre performance.

Nicolas Jackson brace helps Chelsea ease to victory as West Ham fans turn on Julen Lopetegui
Just five matches in and the London Stadium crowd – many of whom wanted Moyes out despite the Scot overseeing the club’s most successful period in decades – turned on the new manager midway through the second half.
Lopetegui says that West Ham “suffered very early on, [with] two goals”.
“If you want to compete you have to be consistent. After this it is more difficult.
“We had more chances than them in the first half, we had one penalty, maybe two, and we said that one goal is going to be key in changing the match, but after we conceded a goal too.
“[We’re] very sad, very disappointed, for the fans above all, but we know that the league is long, and we have to look forward and have to change things.”

Enzo Maresca is speaking to TNT now, and he says he is “very happy”.
“They are a very good team, they have some fantastic players, but overall it think we deserved to win the game.
“It’s quite easy, if they [the players] don’t buy [into it] they don’t play!
“They have been open minded, we have been a bit intense, but this is the moment when I need to insist.”
He adds that he is most happy with “Nicolas and Cole, because the way we prepared was to set them against three players. [They scored] the goals but especially the work off the ball.”

Bowen is speaking to TNT now, and he says that he doesn’t think “we were ever in the game really”.
“I think the goals they scored were every easy, almost gifts. You have to be switched on at every moment, and they punished us.[We’re] disappointed all round.”
He says that “a number of things” went wrong.
“As a player you have to lead and rally everyone together, but I just thought we gave them too much respect in the end. I dont think we did enough today to punish them.
“We came out second half, almost nothing to lose, and we concede a goal after a minute.
“[It was] a disappointing day, but the game is done, we accept the defeat.
“The games are coming thick and fast. It’s still early in the season, still a lot of games to go, and now it’s about rallying together as a group.”

Since making his debut for Chelsea in September 2023, Cole Palmer has contributed to more goals in the Premier League than any other player, with 39 G/A. Haaland is next up, with 38.

Jackson adds that his confidence is “growing higher with my teammates, they help me a lot and they have confidence in me”
“We keep going. This one is finished and next week we go onto another one.
“The most important thing is for the team to win.
“I am happy to play always. To fight for the team and the team to win is the most important thing.”

Palmer and Jackson spoke to TNT after the final whistle, with the Englishman saying that the London Stadium is “a tough place to come”
“A good three points, we are happy.
“Everybody knows he [Nicolas Jackson] is a top player – he needs to keep going. The Chelsea fans and players rate him highly – we know what he is capable of.
“There will always be noise, we try to block it out and listen to the manager. We have a good manager and it can only help us to get better.”

A dominant display from Chelsea that puts them into second place in the league for now.
The away side were sharp and clinical when they needed to be, and in truth it was a surprisingly easy result for them.
For West Ham, it was an abject performance that was seriously poor in some areas, with some truly terrible defending. The attacking play was better in some places, but you really have to question what Lopetegui was doing today.

A poor first half from the home side overall, with the defending for the two goals among some of the worst you will see this season.
In attack, they managed to create some decent opportunities, but this game has got away from them and their defensive fragility looks like it could be revealed again at any moment.
For Chelsea, they’ll go into the break absolutely delighted, but also a little confused as to how they’re 2-0 up while barely having to take their foot off the gas.
The home fans will be hoping for a way back into the game, but it’s difficult to see one at this point, even if Chelsea do sometimes look fragile in defence themselves.

Chelsea match facts

Chelsea could win their opening three away games of a Premier League season for the first time since 2017/18.
The Blues’ 1-0 win at Bournemouth last weekend ended a run of 20 consecutive away matches in all competitions without a clean sheet.
In 2024, only Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool have earned more points in the Premier League than Chelsea’s 42.
The Blues have been shown 16 yellow cards this season, more than any other side in the top flight. Eight of those came in their last game against Bournemouth.
Christopher Nkunku has currently scored more goals for Chelsea (6) than he has made starts (5).

West Ham could begin a season with three straight home league defeats for the first time if they were to lose today. The Hammers have faced a league-high 73 shots across their opening four matches, and they have failed to keep a clean sheet in 11 home league games since a 0-0 draw versus Brighton in January.
Lopetegui’s side have won only two of their 12 Premier League home fixtures in 2024 (D6, L4), beating Brentford 4-2 and Luton 3-1.
The Hammers are the first club to play their opening five matches of a Premier League season in London since Charlton Athletic in 2006-07. Their first league game outside the capital isn’t until early November.
Michail Antonio could become the first player to reach 100 Premier League goal involvements for West Ham today – he currently has 67 goals and 32 assists.

Enzo Maresca backs players over strike threat
11:50 , Chris Wilson
Footballers are playing too many games and not enough is being done to protect them, according to Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca.
In the same week that Manchester City’s Rodri suggested fotballers could strike in response to fixture congestion and a lack of consultation from governing bodies, Maresca said that refusing to play “could be an idea” and hinted he believes players would be right to take action against the number of games they are being made to play.
Chelsea and City are due to take part in FIFA’s inaugural Club World Cup in the United States next summer, further limiting the amount of downtime players will get in between seasons following Euro 2024 and ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Asked whether he felt there were too many games in the current football calendar, Maresca said: “Yes, no doubt.
“In terms of games, it’s too much. I don’t think we protect players. We can say what we think and for me it’s completely wrong the amount of games that we have.
“The only ones that can do something are the players and we can help them. In the last two weeks some of the players have tried to explain what they think. I think it’s a good starting point.
“Some of them have said (they could strike). I think it could be an idea for them.”

Julen Lopetegui not pre-occupied by potential Lucas Paqueta betting ban
11:40 , Chris Wilson
West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui has not spoken with Lucas Paqueta about the FA gambling charges and possible suspension hanging over the Brazilian, and admitted he is reluctant to load too much creative responsibility on to the playmaker after a muted beginning to the season.
The 27-year-old is facing a lengthy ban if found guilty of breaching regulations relating to “spot fixing” in four Premier League matches during the 2022/23 season, when it is alleged he deliberately got booked in order to influence the betting market.
The Hammers have made a mixed start to life under Lopetegui with just one win in their first four league fixtures, and are yet to pick up a point at home ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Chelsea at the London Stadium.
The limited impact made so far by Paqueta, whose only goal involvement came via a penalty in the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, has not helped as the former Real Madrid and Spain coach seeks to transform the team’s playing style from the defensive football favoured by predecessor David Moyes into a more expressive brand of play.
The drawn-out nature of the FA’s disciplinary process means the former Lyon winger is likely to be available to play for much of this season, and the manager said he is satisfied with what he has seen so far.
“I’m happy with his behaviour and his commitment,” said Lopetegui. “He’s working very hard, he’s trying to understand what we want. We’re trying to help him to be better and better. He’s an important player.
“I don’t want to put this kind of responsibility on one player. He has to do the best he can about the offensive phase and defensive phase.
“When he is focused on the defensive work he is a much better player and we try to encourage him to always be focused in a defensive way as well as an offensive way.
“He managed (the betting scandal) in a good way. We try to help him, because until now he is one player more.
“But we don’t talk about (the charges). We talk about football, about the next match and about life. But not about this.”
Ben Chilwell handed Chelsea lifeline as Enzo Maresca considers him for selection
11:30 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Ben Chilwell has been handed a Chelsea lifeline after head coach Enzo Maresca confirmed he is under consideration for selection after returning to training with the first team.
The England defender appeared to have no future at Stamford Bridge in August when he was not included in the core group of 22 or 23 players the Italian considered to be his first-team squad, and was told he could leave.
However, he has been named amongst the club’s 25-man squad eligible to play in the Premier League, and ahead of Saturday’s trip to face West Ham Maresca said the situation had changed.
Enzo Maresca had made three changes to the side that snuck a 1-0 win against Bournemouth last week. In defence, Axel Disasi drops out for summer signing Tosin Adarabioyo, with Wesley Fofana moving to right-back.
Captiain Enzo Fernandez returns to midfield in place of Renato Veiga, while Pedro Neto drops out for fellow summer signing Jadon Sancho, who got the assist last week along with the man of the match award.

Enzo Maresca urges his Chelsea players to ignore external noise
11:00 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Enzo Maresca told his Chelsea players to continue to shut out external noise after they secured a second Premier League win of the season with a 1-0 victory at Bournemouth last weekend.
The Blues remained in the headlines during the September international break after reports emerged of a rift between co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali.
It is the latest off-field problem for Maresca to handle after he fielded various questions over the future of several players during a busy summer of transfer activity.
A very good morning and welcome along to The Independent’s live coverage of the opening clash of the Premier League weekend.
