Grand Slam tennis champion Rafael Nadal retiring end of season

Rafael Nadal, the Spanish tennis legend who won 22 grand slam titles over the course of his career, on Thursday announced he will retire from professional tennis next month.

Nadal turned pro at age 15, in 2001. The 38-year-old will hang up his racquet at the end of 2024, marking the close of a 23-year run on the ATP Tour.

The trophies Nadal has taken home have come with hefty payouts, as well. In addition, he’s signed a number of lucrative sponsorship deals as one of the best athletes of all time.

Additionally, according to Forbes, Nadal can command event appearance fees that surpass $1 million.

Here’s how much prize money Nadal has won, as well as the value of his sponsorship deals over the years and estimated net worth.

Prize money

Nadal’s 92 pro-tournament titles plus other victories have earned the left-handed Spaniard a total of nearly $135 million in prize money across both singles and doubles matches, according to the ATP Tour

Nadal won 1,080 matches, and lost just 227, according to the organization. And because professional tennis players receive payouts not simply for wins but based on how far in a tournament draw they advance, he took home prize money even when he wasn’t crowned champion.

Nadal’s been hamstrung by injuries in recent years, forcing him to bow out of some competitions. Still, to-date in 2024, he’s earned $301,661 in prize money, according to the ATP Tour.

Brand partnerships

In 2024, Nadal was the sixth-highest paid tennis player, raking in $23.3 million, according to a ranking by Forbes. His “off-court” earnings made up the bulk of his income, accounting for $20 million.

As one of the biggest draws in tennis, Nadal has longstanding deals with a number of brands. He’s been sponsored by automobile maker Kia for 20 years, and in 2023 signed a deal to be a brand ambassador for IT company Infosys.

He’s also sponsored by watchmaker Richard Mille, and has long been wearing the brand’s timepieces — which run anywhere from six-figures into the millions — while playing tennis. “The watch is now like a second skin for me,” Nadal said, according to Richard Mille’s website.

This year, Nadal teamed up with rival Roger Federer for a “Core Values” campaign for luxury fashion brand Louis Vuitton.

Nadal has also signed on to be an ambassador for the Saudi Arabian Tennis Federation, despite criticisms that the country is using sports to cover up its controversial record on human rights and equality issues. According to Forbes, Nadal is believed to earn seven figures annually through the partnership.

Nadal also signed on with Nike early on, and has been wearing Nike footwear and apparel on the court since the beginning of his career. Nike has not revealed the value of its partnership with Nadal, though according to Yahoo Sports, the sportswear giant paid him roughly $10 million in bonuses in those years he achieved the top ranking in the world.

Eminem Learns He’s a Grandpa in ‘Temporary’ Music Video

Clip for the rapper’s tribute to his daughter Hailie Jade Mathers is filled with old and new home movies

Eminem has dropped a new music video for his song “Temporary” that’s filled with old home movies, and also a few new ones, including a clip where the rapper learns he’s going to be a grandfather.

“Temporary,” which features Skylar Grey, is Em’s heartfelt tribute to his daughter, Hailie Jade Mathers. The clip largely consists of old footage of father and daughter from the late Nineties and early 2000s, just as Eminem’s star was ascending. It’s interspersed with some more recent clips, including footage from Hailie’s wedding, as well as an incredibly endearing moment when she gifts her father a Detroit Lions jersey with “Grandpa” written on the back.

“Temporary” appears on Eminem’s most recent album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce), which was released back in July. Last month, he dropped an expanded version of the album featuring a new skit and three additional tracks, including a new version of the song “Fuel” and the track, “Kyrie and Luka,” with 2 Chainz.

Trending

Eminem started rolling out The Death of Slim Shady earlier this year, launching a campaign centered around  — as the album’s title suggests — the death of his Slim Shady alter ego. For instance, he published a faux obituary for Slim in the Detroit Free Press, mourning the character’s “tortured existence.” And he also took a chainsaw to his alter ego at the end of the music video for “Tobey” (which also featured fellow Detroit rappers Big Sean and BabyTron).

Eminem has also shared music videos for The Death of Slim Shady’s lead single, “Houdini,” as well as “Somebody Save Me,” his collaboration with Jelly Roll. Em performed both songs at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards as well.

Travis Hunter explains why he’s “Heisman Worthy” on FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff

In Week 5 of the college football season, Colorado Buffaloes two-way sensation Travis Hunter continues to build his Heisman Trophy profile as his team prepares for a showdown against UCF in Orlando. Ahead of the highly anticipated matchup, Hunter sat down for an interview with legendary defensive back and Heisman winner Charles Woodson on FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff. The interview highlighted Hunter’s unique role and impact on both sides of the ball, drawing comparisons to Woodson’s own Heisman campaign in 1997.

Hunter, who has been playing at an elite level as both a wide receiver and a cornerback, is averaging an astounding 130 snaps per game. “There ain’t nobody out there doing 130 snaps a game,” Hunter confidently remarked when asked about how he compares to other players currently vying for the Heisman. His versatility and endurance have made him a focal point of Colorado’s resurgence under head coach Deion Sanders.

“My main goal right now is to stay focused on my team and the individual awards will come,” Hunter added.

The interview between Woodson and Hunter was not only a meeting of two football icons but also a passing of the torch. Woodson’s Heisman win came as a rare defensive player who also contributed as a receiver and special teamer. Hunter is following in those footsteps but taking it a step further by regularly playing significant roles on both offense and defense.

Hunter is living the dream of playing the sport he loves, but his journey hasn’t been without controversy. Since entering college football, “Saucy-T” has faced criticism for setting ambitious goals, particularly his desire to play on both sides, a rare feat in modern football. As a standout at Collins High School, he demonstrated his versatility, excelling as both a receiver and a defensive back. When he made the transition to Jackson State University, Hunter remained committed to his two-way playing style, continuing to prove his elite talent on offense and defense.

Hunter is often compared to a small but elite group of players, including Woodson, Champ Bailey, and Jabrill Peppers, who similarly defied convention by excelling in multiple roles. Yet, the physical and mental toll of being a two-way player is immense, and Hunter has consistently risen to the challenge. His ability to play extensive snaps on both offense and defense has set him apart in college football, with many wondering how this will translate to the NFL.

One notable debate centers around which position Hunter will play in the NFL. During a discussion on the St. Brown podcast, former NFL cornerback Richard Sherman weighed in on the subject. Having himself transitioned from wide receiver to cornerback in college, Sherman praised Hunter’s natural defensive abilities but expressed concerns about his potential as an NFL receiver. Sherman suggested that while Hunter is a solid receiver, his route running might not separate him from elite NFL defensive backs. However, Sherman firmly believes that Hunter will reset the market for cornerbacks in the NFL.

Hunter’s response to Sherman’s comments was thoughtful, noting that he once modeled his game after Sherman. As Hunter continues his college career, fans and analysts alike eagerly await to see which side of the ball, or possibly both, Hunter will dominate in the NFL.

Colorado’s matchup against UCF marks the first-ever meeting between the two programs, and all eyes will be on Hunter as he looks to boost his Heisman candidacy further. UCF’s defense will have its hands full trying to contain him, whether he’s locking down receivers as a cornerback or making explosive plays as a receiver himself.

The game kicks off at 3:30 p.m. ET on FOX, with Hunter poised to once again make headlines. With every snap he takes, his case for the Heisman grows stronger, putting him at the forefront of one of the most captivating storylines in college football this season.

Brett Favre testifies on Capitol Hill on Tuesday.

Brett Favre tells Congress he’s been diagnosed with Parkinson’s

Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre said he’s been diagnosed with Parkinson’s, a stunning disclosure made to Congress on Tuesday while testifying about his potential misuse of taxpayer money.

Favre, appearing before the House Ways and Means Committee, has been accused of improperly using political connections to redirect public money to his alma mater and his own pocket.

“Sadly, I also lost an investment in a company that I believed was developing a breakthrough concussion drug I thought would help others, and I’m sure you’ll understand why it’s too late for me because I’ve recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s,” Favre told lawmakers.

“This is also a cause dear to my heart. Recently, the doctor, running the company pleaded guilty to taking (public) money for his own use.”

Parkinson’s is a brain disorder that causes unintended or uncontrollable movements.

Symptoms, such as shaking and difficulty with balance and coordination, gradually worsen over time and often progress to difficulty walking and talking.

A history of playing football was associated with a higher risk of a self-reported diagnosis of Parkinson’s or parkinsonism, according to a study published last year in the journal JAMA Network Open.

The study, based on surveys of people who’d played a range of organized sports, found that former football players who had longer playing history and higher level of competition were more likely to have a form of the condition.

Favre, who played 20 seasons in the NFL and was inducted to Canton in 2016, was in Washington on Tuesday to answer questions about how he came into money from the federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program.

The Hall of Fame QB improperly received program money for speaking engagements that he never made, according to a state auditor.

Favre was also accused of using his ties for former Gov. Phil Bryant to lobby for TANF funds to go to a new volleyball facility at his alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi, where his daughter was a player.

Favre has not been criminally charged, but he is repaying some of the money.

In his testimony on Tuesday, Favre insisted he did nothing wrong and only later found that the money sent to him for speaking engagements and earmarked for volleyball came from taxpayers.

Tyrese Gibson detained after he’s found in contempt of court

Tyrese Gibson pushed back Tuesday and Wednesday about his reported arrest in Georgia — he now says he was only detained — after he was held in contempt of court for failing to pay child support.

The “Fast and the Furious” franchise star was taken into custody Monday after Fulton County Superior Court Judge Kevin M. Farmer ordered the actor to pay more than $73,500 to his ex-wife, Samantha Lee, who divorced him in 2020 after three years of marriage.

Gibson was found in “willful contempt” of court for allegedly failing to make child support payments for their 5-year-old daughter, Soraya. (The actor also is father to 17-year-old daughter Shayla, whom he shares with ex-wife Norma Mitchell.) The judgment came during Lee’s third motion for contempt hearing, and the judge said that the actor had to be detained until he made the payment, according to court documents reviewed Tuesday by The Times.

“I was detained, not arrested, for less than two hours and released immediately after the great work of my attorney, Tanya Mitchell Graham’s Notice of Intent to Appeal was filed into the Clerk’s Office minutes after the Judge’s ruling,” Gibson said Wednesday in a statement to The Times.

“I have never stopped paying child support; even without a court order, I have always supported both my daughters beyond any court mandate. Although there has been confusion regarding various custody and child support issues, I am currently home and there is no other litigation besides the appeal we filed last year, and the appeal filed yesterday.”

Gibson said he would be staying off social media for the time being. He also cited a decade’s worth of work on behalf of parents navigating child support, saying that his personal experience has “highlighted the flaws in the system, demonstrating the urgent need for reform.”

“Many fathers and mothers, including myself, face significant biases in the family court system,” he added. “Men striving to be present fathers are often penalized rather than supported. This is a significant issue in Black and Brown communities, and I deeply sympathize with those navigating this system without financial resources. Court biases can lead to unfair outcomes, widening the justice gap we see today.”

TMZ reported Tuesday that after Gibson was found in contempt of court, a bailiff put him in handcuffs and marched him out of the courtroom. The New York Post said Gibson was detained and later released after failing to pay his $10,000 court-ordered monthly child support.

The “Sweet Lady” singer was released from custody, TMZ said, after his attorney Tanya Mitchell Graham filed an appeal. The appeal bought the actor some time and did not require the payment of back child support before he was released. His attorney filed a similar appeal in April 2023, during the former couple’s contentious divorce battle, when Gibson was first ordered to pay child support, the outlet said.

The “Morbius” star addressed the arrest Tuesday on his Instagram Stories, writing, “Getting arrested wasn’t fun as a matter of fact it was very traumatic… One would ask why does this judge Kevin M. Farmer HATE me so much?” He added a second story that targeted his ex-wife’s attorney and said that “getting arrested wasn’t easy.”

Gibson also included Google Drive links to appeal documents dated May 13, 2024, describing the appeal as a “nightmare” for the judge. Though it was unclear if the documents had been filed in court, they listed three “key issues and arguments” that the appeal was based on and characterized the child support demand as “over-reaching and punitive.”

Gibson’s attorneys, Graham and Beverly L. Cohen, first argued that an arbitrator in the couple’s divorce case found that Gibson and Lee’s premarital agreement was valid but somehow invalidated a portion of it that dealt with attorneys’ fees. (Lee is seeking $7,500 in attorney fees.)

Second, his attorneys said that Gibson “has been voluntarily financially supporting” Soraya since birth and during the divorce case “at the highest Basic Child Support Obligation.” His attorneys argued that the court awarding a retroactive, lump-sum child support payment “will undoubtedly send a chilling effect to other divorcees who voluntarily financially support their minor child(ren) during a divorce proceeding without the need of a temporary hearing and temporary court order.”

Lastly, they argued that Gibson was “de facto” paying spousal support by awarding Lee child support with a high-income deviation, which allowed her to buy a house, work less and cover 50% of their child’s school tuition. (The document said, “The trial court found that alimony was not warranted.”)

“Instead of applauding the Appellant [Gibson] for doing what he was supposed to do voluntarily by financially supporting the minor child without court intervention, the Appellant was punished for doing what was right,” the document said.

The attorneys did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

On Sunday, Gibson took to Instagram and called his ex’s legal maneuvering “goofy” and insisted that he is innocent because their prenup allegedly covered everything involved in their 2020 divorce. He also posted about the meaning of being a father in a series of posts before and after his detainment.

Armie Hammer Says He’s Selling His Truck Because He ‘Can’t Afford’ Gas

Armie Hammer is trading in his beloved truck for a “tiny” hybrid as he returns to Los Angeles to start a “new life.”

The actor took to social media to share a video from a California CarMax, in which he shared he’s been back in Los Angeles for a couple of weeks, after retreating to the Cayman Islands following his cannibalism scandal.

“This is my truck. I bought this for myself in 2017 as a Christmas gift for myself, because I’ve had pickup trucks for a long time, and I have loved this truck intensely and taken it camping and across [the] country multiple times and on long road trips,” he said. “Since being back in L.A., I have put about $400 or $500 worth of gas in it, and I can’t afford it. I can’t afford the gas anymore.”

Hammer continued, explaining that the truck holds a lot of memories: bringing his kids back from the hospital when they were hurt, lots of trips, etc. “Here’s to new beginnings,” he added, noting that he’s trading it in for a car that will only need like “10 bucks of gas in it a month.”

The Call Me by Your Name star moved out of the country and worked as a timeshare salesman in the Caribbean islands for a few years after he was accused of rape, cannibalism and sexual misconduct.

In a June interview, Hammer revealed that he’s “grateful” for the allegations that upended his career three years ago.

“Whatever it was that people said, whatever it was that happened, I’m now at a place in my life where I’m grateful for every single bit of it,” he said on an episode of the Painful Lessons podcast. “I’m actually now at a place where I’m really grateful for it because where I was in my life before all of that stuff happened to me, I didn’t feel good. I never felt satisfied. I never had enough. I never was in a place where I was happy with myself.”
