Will Commanders QB Jayden Daniels play on Sunday?

The Chicago Bears have some key defenders ruled out while the Washington Commanders may have to roll without Jayden Daniels.

ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Commanders are 5-2 and a full win on top of the 4-2 Philadelphia Eagles for first place in the NFC East as we reach the midway point of the NFL season.

With a win over the Chicago Bears this weekend, the Commanders would keep that lead, and if the Cincinnati Bengals do them a solid by beating the Eagles, that lead could grow.

In order to do that, however, Washington may have to go to battle against the Bears without its starting quarterback, as Jayden Daniels has officially been labeled ‘questionable’ to play this Sunday.

“Jayden was able to practice today,” coach Dan Quinn said on Friday. “We followed the plan really, that we set at the start of the week. And for you guys, think of crawl, walk, and run, like we do with a lot of guys on the return back from injury. So, Wednesday into that first piece, Thursday on the walk piece to go, and then Friday to get the run. And we will assess how he responds to the work that we did over the next 48 hours. But we really pushed it today. And playing quarterback, the movements, the skills, and also specific to the game plan. Going through the whole thing, all parts of the field. So, we’re really following that process, and we’ll let our eyes decide and how he responds over the next 48 hours. And that’ll guide us, and we’ll make the best decision for him and for the team. And if he can’t go, certainly have all the confidence in [QB] Marcus [Mariota]. This quarterback room is really a fun one to be around, to see the support they have for one another and helping one another, their readiness.”

Joining Daniels with a ‘questionable’ status for Sunday is defensive end Dorance Armstrong Jr., who left the Week 7 game against the Baltimore Ravens and missed last week’s win over the Carolina Panthers with a rib injury of his own.

Not playing this weekend will be rookie offensive tackle Brandon Coleman, who suffered a concussion against the Panthers and was unable to clear protocol in time to be active for Week 8.

On the flip side, Chicago will be without safety Jaquan Brisker (concussion) and cornerback Kyler Gordon (hamstring), while three other players are listed as ‘questionable’ entering the weekend.

The Washington Commanders kickoff against the Chicago Bears at 4:25 p.m. ET inside Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, this Sunday.

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels will start on Sunday against the Chicago Bears.

Head coach Dan Quinn told CBS’ Tracy Wolfson on Sunday that Daniels will start barring a setback in pregame warmups. The Commanders then listed him as active prior to kickoff.

Daniels has been dealing with a rib injury. He suffered the injury early last week against the Carolina Panthers. Backup quarterback Marcus Mariota finished the 40-7 Commanders win in relief. Quinn previously said that Daniels was considered a game-time decision against Chicago.

Daniels’ availability ensures a highly anticipated matchup featuring the top two picks in this year’s NFL Draft. The Bears selected Williams first overall, and Washington took Daniels with the No. 2 pick.

Both players have experienced early success in their careers and led their teams to winning records. Washington enters Sunday’s game at 5-2 and in first place in the NFC East. Daniels is a big reason for Washington’s success as one of the league’s best quarterbacks early in the season.

In seven games, Daniels has completed a league-best 75.6% of his passes for 8.4 yards per attempt with six touchdowns and two interceptions. The Commanders rank fourth in the NFL with 384.1 yards per game and are tied with the Baltimore Ravens for the league lead with 31.1 points per game.

Williams has led the Bears to a 4-2 record. He’s completed 65.3% of his passes for 6.6 yards per attempt with nine touchdowns and five interceptions in six starts.

Jayden Daniels’ magical rookie season continued on Sunday as the No. 2 pick led the Washington Commanders to a 34-13 win over the Cleveland Browns.

While he threw his second interception of the year, he finished with 238 passing yards, a touchdown through the air and 82 rushing yards. He also made history, becoming the first player in NFL history to record 1,000-plus passing yards and 250-plus rushing yards through five career games.

The LSU product continued to be nothing short of spectacular in Week 5, and fans had high praises for Daniels on social media following the win.

Daniels has been everything the Commanders could have asked for out of the No. 2 pick through five games. Not only is he developing well and putting up big numbers, but he’s also leading Washington to wins.

With Sunday’s victory, the Commanders improved to 4-1 for the first time since 2008. The fourth win of the year also means Washington has matched its win total for the entire 2023 season, showing major improvements early on.

Daniels and the Commanders will get one of their biggest tests of the season so far when they take on the Baltimore Ravens next week, which will be a good measuring stick, but after Week 5 it’s hard to deny Washington is looking like a playoff team.

Jayden Daniels continues ‘Superman’ act for red-hot Commanders

LANDOVER, Md. — Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels wore a diamond-studded No. 5 on a chain around his neck as he addressed the media. For the past four weeks, teammates say he has also worn an “S” on his chest as he helped build a four-game winning streak.

“He came in like Superman,” safety Jeremy Reaves said.

And even on a day when that cape was tugged, Daniels still managed to make plays that caused teammates to go “Wow” as he helped the Commanders continue an improbable start. After a 34-13 win over Cleveland on Sunday, Washington improved to 4-1 for the first time since 2008.

“We can be a really scary team,” linebacker Bobby Wagner said.

The Commanders have already matched their win total from last season and have won consecutive games by a combined 49 points entering their Week 6 game at Baltimore.

“The vibes in here are really high,” receiver Terry McLaurin said.

It has led to some players — who have endured one storm after another during their Washington tenure — to almost pinch themselves to make sure it’s real. Many were here during the turbulent period in which there were multiple investigations into owner Dan Snyder and the culture he created. Washington hasn’t had a winning season since 2016 — only one current player, punter Tress Way, was on the roster that season. Fans abandoned hope.

It’s coming back. In droves.

Reaves, with the organization since 2018, said he told teammate Jeremy Chinn, who signed with Washington in the offseason, “I don’t even know how to process this. It’s never been like this here. I was still in middle school [in 2008].”

Or as defensive tackle Jon Allen, in his eighth season here, said of the overnight change in the organization, “It’s night and day.”

A good chunk of that difference stems from Daniels and what he has done in his first five games. He became the first player in NFL history to throw for more than 1,000 yards and rush for at least 250 in his first five games. He also set an NFL record for completion percentage in the first four games of a season (82.1).

And even when he had his least accurate day — he completed 14 of 25 passes — Daniels still made big plays. On at least three occasions, he left a Browns player pounding the ground in frustration after allowing him to turn the corner for a big run or throw.

One time, Daniels eluded a blitz from safety Grant Delpit and linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah by rushing to the outside — and then connecting with receiver McLaurin for a 66-yard gain. Another time defensive end Za’Darius Smith grabbed a piece of Daniels’ jersey as he ran to the right. It was nearly a sack; instead Daniels ran away from Smith for a 2-yard again on third-and-1.

Daniels ultimately ran 11 times for 82 yards, including a 34-yarder. He connected with receiver Dyami Brown for a 41-yard touchdown.

“He’s a competitor,” running back Austin Ekeler said. “He is going to show us stuff all year that we’re going to be like, ‘Wow.'”

But one reason Washington is more excited is because on Sunday, Daniels also showed that he’s still a rookie. He tossed an interception at the goal line on one drive and was less accurate than in his first four games.

However, the defense dominated a struggling Browns offense, recording seven sacks, holding them to 212 yards and one-of-13 on third downs. In the past two weeks the defense has allowed just 27 combined points.

It adds up to a team having fun again for the first time in a long time. Players have talked about how much fun they have going to work and playing with one another. After defensive end Dante Fowler Jr. recorded a sack, center Tyler Biadasz was on the sideline mimicking his “sweeper” celebration.

“I haven’t been a part of a quote, ‘good culture,'” said Washington right guard Sam Cosmi, who’s in his fourth season with the Commanders. “Slowly but surely I see it. It’s really cool to see, to be a part of talking and acting on it. I’m excited about that.”

That energy filtered into the stands at a stadium known for often having thousands of opposing fans. Any Browns fans were drowned out Sunday.

“I can’t give any regard for the past,” Quinn said. “What I can say, I thought there was a home-field advantage created.”

Allen credited Quinn for creating an energetic atmosphere. “There’s a reason guys always follow him around the league,” he said.

But, in the end, Daniels’ performance has been almost as invigorating. Linebacker Frankie Luvu, who recovered a fumble and had 2.5 sacks Sunday, said Daniels is already at the facility when he and Wagner arrive around “5 or 6 [a.m.].”

“To see that and what he does on Sundays, it’s not shocking,” Luvu said.

The second overall pick has captivated the fans in Washington — and beyond.

“I’ve got people back home [in Florida] who never watch the Commanders that are blowing up my phone,” Reaves said. “I get more texts about him than about myself. That’s crazy. I’ve never turned on my TV and seen anything Commanders or I’m on Twitter and Commanders is trending in a good way.”

But Daniels remains unimpressed. As someone close to him said recently: He didn’t come to Washington to win games early in the season.

“I’m just excited for those guys to have this feeling,” Daniels said of the players who have been here a while. “It’s exciting times. But we have to get back to work. We’re on to the next week now.”

Jayden Daniels Commanders make statement in win vs Bengals

CINCINNATI — Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders stole the show in their 38-33 upset victory over Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals on “Monday Night Football.”

Daniels, the No. 2 pick in the 2024 draft, led the Commanders down the field for touchdowns on each of their first four full drives to build a 28-13 lead midway through the third quarter and held off the Bengals from there. The former Heisman winner from LSU showed off his dual-threat ability in the win. He tossed two TDs and ran for one, finishing the night 21-of-23 for 254 yards while running for another 39 on 12 carries.

Meanwhile, the Bengals’ offense struggled to find its rhythm for most of the game but made its push in the second half. A fourth-down touchdown pass from Burrow to second-year wide receiver Andrei Iosivas pulled Cincinnati within a score with just over three minutes remaining in the third quarter. Washington answered that with a field goal before Burrow found Chase for the pair’s second TD connection of the night with 9:42 left in the fourth quarter to make the score 31-26. But Daniels had the final say, spectacularly capping off a 12-play, 70-yard drive that lasted over seven minutes with a perfect 27-yard TD pass down the sideline to wideout Terry McLaurin to seal the impressive win.

The Commanders improved to 2-1 on the season. The Bengals dropped to 0-3.

Here are the most important things to know from Monday night for both teams:

The Commanders appear to have found a young quarterback to build around.

Rookie Jayden Daniels revealed himself to the NFL world, completing 21 of 23 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-33 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. He also rushed 12 times for 39 yards.

Daniels hurt Cincinnati with his arm — dropping a perfect pass to receiver Terry McLaurin for a 55-yard gain to set up the Commanders’ third touchdown in the first half. Then, three plays after converting a fourth-and-4, Daniels was drilled by a blitzing defender — and placed another perfect ball to McLaurin for the game-clinching 27-yard touchdown pass.

Daniels hurt the Bengals with his legs, too, scrambling for a 4-yard touchdown run around left end two plays after McLaurin’s 55-yard catch.

Washington has looked for a franchise quarterback for a long time, through first-round picks (four since 2002), trades and free agent signings. The Commanders started 10 quarterbacks in the previous five years. Through three games, Washington can finally look to the future with excitement thanks to Daniels.

Promising performance: Running back Austin Ekeler. Before leaving early in the third quarter with a concussion, Ekeler gained 119 all-purpose yards, with 62 coming on a kick return. Ekeler has looked good since training camp opened and showed excellent burst on a 24-yard touchdown in the first quarter.

Biggest hole in the game plan: Defending receiver Ja’Marr Chase. The Bengals wide receiver is one of the most dangerous skill players in the NFL. He scored touchdowns on catches of 41 and 31 yards when the Commanders opted for single-high coverage, leaving corners Mike Sainristil and Benjamin St-Juste with no help on Chase’s respective touchdowns.

Pivotal play: Washington converted a fourth-and-4 with 4 minutes, 25 seconds left in the game from the Bengals’ 38-yard line. The Commanders could have attempted a 56-yard field goal or punted and played defense. Instead, they opted to go for it, and Daniels completed a 9-yard pass to tight end Zach Ertz. Three plays later, Daniels clinched it with a touchdown pass to McLaurin.

Troubling trend: Defending the run. Washington entered Monday night ranked 29th vs. the run, allowing 5.1 yards per carry. But the Commanders allowed 6.2 yards per carry Monday night. They’ve used a lot of two-deep safety looks, keeping an extra defender out of the box, but they must play better along the front. — John Keim

Next game: vs. Arizona Cardinals (4:05 p.m. ET, Sunday, Sept. 29)

For the second time in three games, the Bengals were big home favorites over a team that had a rough 2023 season. And yet again, Cincinnati suffered a stunning upset.

Led by rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, the Commanders topped the Bengals 38-33 to send Cincinnati to an 0-3 start.

Daniels produced a masterful performance. Washington scored touchdowns on five of its first six drives, including a 27-yard pass from Daniels to wide receiver Terry McLaurin to salt away the win with 2:10 left.

Before the season started, the Bengals were in the conversation to challenge Kansas City for the AFC title. But a third AFC title meeting in four seasons between the teams seems very distant right now. According to ESPN Research, only six teams have reached the playoffs in the Super Bowl era after an 0-3 start to the season.

Troubling trend: Failing to convert possessions into touchdowns was an issue last week against the Kansas City Chiefs and persisted against Washington. In the second quarter, Cincinnati had three drives inside Washington’s 30-yard line. The Bengals settled for field goal tries on all three of them. Kicker Evan McPherson made 2 of 3 attempts.

Biggest hole in the game plan: Containing Daniels. The rookie quarterback made running the offense look effortless in his third career start. Daniels completed 14 of his first 16 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown. He also scrambled for one touchdown to help the Commanders torch Cincinnati’s defense. Washington scored touchdowns on its first four drives. — Ben Baby
