2024 Week 7 Game Report

Thomas, the No. 23 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, caught five passes for 89 yards and one touchdown. He caught a two-point conversion following Washington’s punt return to give the Jaguars a 22-10 halftime lead.

“There has been a lot of emphasis on sticking together and playing for one another,” Thomas said. “We didn’t have the start we maybe wanted, but we kept playing and stuck together.”

The Jaguars scored 25 consecutive points after trailing 10-0 early in the second quarter.

“Nobody was like, ‘Here we go again’ or had negative thoughts,” Pederson said. “It was just one play at a time to work ourself back in it. We showed the complimentary aspect of the game today in all three phases. That’s the spark that hopefully can get this thing going.”

Bigsby rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries, and the Jaguars outrushed New England 171-38. The Jaguars had a 364-295 total yardage advantage for the game.

“We ran the ball great today,” Lawrence said. “That always helps.”

Bigsby’s four-yard run with 1:41 remaining gave the Jaguars their final margin.

Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye completed 26 of 37 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.

The Jaguars registered no takeaways and two sacks Sunday, giving them two defensive takeaways for the season with 15 sacks. Linebacker Devin Lloyd registered a first-quarter sack and defensive end Travon Walker sacked Maye just before the two-minute warning to force fourth-and-26 from the Patriots 10.

Maye threw incomplete from there to clinch the Jaguars’ victory.

Maye threw incomplete from there to clinch the Jaguars’ victory, a victory that came a week after a one-sided loss to the Chicago Bears at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

“We just needed to win a game,” Pederson said. “We love coming over here, but it didn’t matter where. I’m proud of the guys, and proud of the coaches for the way we worked over here.

“It was a good way to finish this little run.”

2024 Week 6 Game Report

2024 Week 6 Game Report

LONDON – This was a bit too familiar.

It was a bit too frustrating and disappointing, too – with the Jaguars’ annual London trip hardly beginning as they hoped and needed.

Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams had a huge game and the Jaguars’ offense struggled through the middle of the game – all of which allowed the Bears to pull away for a 35-16 victory in front of 61,182 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium Sunday afternoon.

“We’ve got to play better all around,” Head Coach Doug Pederson said, adding, “I take full responsibility, obviously, but we all need to be better.”

Pederson added, “We didn’t expect to be here in this spot. We have to find a way to get out of it.”

The Jaguars (1-5), a week after beating the Indianapolis Colts in Jacksonville, lost for a 10th time in 12 games dating to last season. The Bears (4-2) out-gained the Jaguars 373-278, including 216-13 in a momentum-turning second quarter.

“We didn’t make enough plays, didn’t execute, and had just too many mistakes,” Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence said, adding: “We have 11 more games. There’s definitely a way back. Me pumping us up isn’t going to do anything up here. We have to take care of business on our end. It’s a long season and we have a lot of football left.”

The Jaguars will play a home game against the New England Patriots at Wembley Stadium in London next Sunday. Pederson called that game “must win.”

“I would say so,” he said. “I would say everything here on out, quite frankly. If we want to get back to playing the type of football we know we can play, you’re going to have to win a lot of games moving forward. I would say these games moving forward are just that.”

Pederson also said he believes he has the “full backing” of Owner Shad Khan.

“I was just with him,” he said during his post-game media availability, “and I do.”

Pederson added that he felt “defeated” after the team’s second-widest margin of defeat this season.

“I feel for the players and the coaches,” he said. “We work extremely too hard to be in this position. The guys don’t quit. They keep fighting.”

Williams, the No. 1 selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, completed 23 of 39 passes for four touchdown passes with an interception on a Jaguars defense that has struggled against the pass in recent weeks.

Williams’ two second-quarter touchdown passes to tight end Cole Kmet to turn a 3-0 Jaguars lead into a 14-3 Bears halftime advantage, with Williams starting the second half with a first-drive touchdown pass to wide receiver Keenan Allen.

Williams’ second touchdown pass to Allen in as many quarters all-but secured the Bears’ victory seconds into the fourth quarter.

2024 Week 4 Game Report

JACKSONVILLE – The day was wet, weird and wild – and historical.

Most important: The Jaguars won when they really needed to win, and now have a bit of momentum as they prepare for their two-game stretch overseas.

Quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw two for touchdowns and running back Tank Bigsby ran for two more as the Jaguars won on “Throwback Sunday” – a heart-stopping 37-34 victory over the Indianapolis Colts on a wet, gray October Sunday at EverBank Stadium.

“Today it all came together,” Head Coach Doug Pederson said after the Jaguars’ first victory of the season. “I’m proud of the guys for pulling this one out.”

Rookie kicker Cam Little’s 49-yard field goal with :17 remaining gave the Jaguars the lead – and the victory – after the Colts rallied from 14-point fourth-quarter deficit.

“It feels good to win,” Lawrence said. “It’s why you play the game. It feels great to win. It feels good for the hard work to pay off. It’s cool when it all clicks and pays off and you get a chance to win. We’re going to use it to propel us.”

The Jaguars drove 39 yards in eight plays for the game-winning field goal.

“I’m proud of the guys for the way finished; a great team effort today,” Pederson said, calling the final drive, “Huge.”

“It was an opportunity to go win the game,” he said. “It’s good for us to do that as a football team. This was a really good complementary game today.”

The Jaguars wore their Throwback Prowler jerseys – based on the ones first worn in their 1995 expansion season – for the first time Sunday. Former Head Coach Tom Coughlin, the franchise’s first head coach, was inducted into the Pride of the Jaguars at halftime.

The Jaguars, who play the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots in London the next two weeks, are now 1-4. The Colts are 2-3.

“There’s a weight off everybody’s shoulders,” Pederson said. “There’s a weight off my shoulders, too. Now you guys can get off my tail.”

The Jaguars won their 10th consecutive home game against the Colts, who last won in Jacksonville in 2014.

Lawrence completed 28 of 34 passes for 371 yards and two touchdowns with one interception, with his 85-yard touchdown pass to rookie wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. giving the Jaguars a 10-7 second-quarter lead.

“Obviously this team had a rough start, but we’ve kept our confidence,” Lawrence said. “We’ve kept swinging.”

Lawrence also threw a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to tight end Brenton Strange, and Bigsby’s two touchdowns both came in the second half – a 19-yarder in the third quarter that gave the Jaguars a 20-10 lead and a 65-yarder with 6:00 remaining that pushed their lead to 34-20.

Bigsby rushed for 101 yards on 13 carries.

Colts quarterback Joe Flacco, starting for injured starter Anthony Richardson, completed 33 of 44 passes for 359 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Flacco rallied the Colts repeatedly in the second half, with the Colts scoring two touchdowns in less than four minutes to tie it 34-34 before the Jaguars’ game-winning drive.

The Jaguars registered four sacks Sunday with one takeaway, with defensive end Travon Walker registering three sacks and defensive end Josh Hines-Allen registering one. Walker’s second-quarter sack forced a fumble that Hines-Allen recovered to set up a field goal by Cam Little that gave the Jaguars a three-point halftime lead.

Walker’s final sack came on the game’s final play.

“I told the guys if they just continue to stick together and work hard and trust what we’re doing and buy in … that’s what you’re seeing,” Pederson said. “Is it perfect? No. It never going to be perfect. But we’ve had five games. Four of them have been one-score games. These games are going to come to the last drive or two of a game.

“As a team we have to embrace and we have to learn to do that. Today was a good step.”

  • Wide receiver Michael Pittman capped a 12-play, 71-yard opening drive with a one-yard reception from Flacco to give the Colts a 7-0 lead with 8:49 remaining in the first quarter.
  • Little’s 23-yard field goal capped a 14-play, 84-yard drive and cut the Colts’ lead to 7-3 with 8:57 remaining in the second quarter; Bigsby’s 28-yard reception on a screen pass on second-and-6 gave the Jaguars a first down at the Colts 24. Thomas’ 85-yard touchdown reception from Lawrence came one play after a Colts punt and gave the Jaguars their first lead of the game – 10-7 – with 7:02 remaining in the second quarter. Colts kicker Matt Gay’s 30-yard field goal with 1:44 remaining in the half tied the game 10-10. Little’s 30-yard field goal with :04 remaining in the second quarter gave the Jaguars a 13-10 halftime lead, with the field goal coming one play after Hines-Allen recovered Walker’s strip sack on Flacco.
  • The Jaguars maintained momentum and pushed the lead to 20-10 when Bigsby ran up the middle or a 19-yard touchdown with 7:13 remaining in the third quarter, a play that came one play after wide receiver Devin Duvernay’s 53-yard punt return.
  • Tight end Mo Alie-Cox’s 18-yard touchdown reception from Flacco on the first play of the fourth quarter cut the Jaguars’ lead to 20-17 with 14:54 remaining. Lawrence capped a seven-play, 70-yard drive on the ensuing possession with a four-yard touchdown pass to Strange for a 27-17 lead with 9:59 remaining; wide receiver Christian Kirk’s 61-yard reception from Lawrence keyed the drive. The Colts cut the lead to 27-20 with Gay’s 30-yard field goal with 6:00 remaining. Bigsby’s 65-yarder came on the ensuing series, with Colts running back Trey Sermon’s one-yard run with 4:27 remaining again trimming the Jaguars’ lead to seven – 34-27. Colts wide receiver Alex Pierce’s 65-yard reception from Flacco on the ensuing Colts series tied it 34-34 with 2:40 remaining.

Notable Moments:

  • Tight end Evan Engram was among seven inactive Jaguars players Sunday, missing a fourth consecutive game with a hamstring injury.
  • Hines-Allen played/started after clearing concussion protocol Saturday and safety Darnell Savage played/started after missing three consecutive games with a quadriceps issue. Linebacker Devin Lloyd played after missing a loss to the Houston Texans last Sunday with a knee injury.
  • Other Jaguars inactives Sunday: Linebacker Yasir Abdullah (neck), rookie defensive end Myles Cole, rookie offensive lineman Javon Foster, offensive lineman Cole Van Lanen, rookie defensive tackle Jordan Jefferson and safety Daniel Thomas (hamstring).

In-Game Injury Report:

  • Duvernay sustained a hamstring injury in the second half.

Jaguars 2024 Game Report, Week 4: Texans vs. Jaguars

HOUSTON, Texas – This was better. At least a bit. It just wasn’t enough.

The Jaguars played with grit and desire Sunday, but the result was their AFC South deficit only got deeper.

Quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw two touchdown passes and the Jaguars led early and late, but the division-leading Houston Texans rallied twice – once in the first half and again in the second – for a 24-20 victory at NRG Stadium Sunday afternoon.

“I just tell them we have to keep working, keep fighting,” Head Coach Doug Pederson said. “We have a lot of football ahead of us. It’s not the time to start pointing fingers.”

Running back Dare Ogunbowale’s one-yard touchdown reception from quarterback C.J. Stroud gave the Texans the lead with :18 remaining. That capped a nine-play, 69-yard drive.

Lawrence afterward said he was “pretty frustrated.”

“A lot of missed opportunities,” Lawrence said. “It’s what’s been happening the past few weeks. We weren’t able to overcome it today. The guys fought hard. We gave it everything we had and had a chance at the end. Offensively, the last few possessions we didn’t do enough.”

The Jaguars’ defense held the Texans scoreless on their first five second-half possessions.

“Credit to our defense in the second half,” Lawrence said. “They came out, played really well and gave us the ball back a lot. We have to capitalize.”

The Jaguars are 0-4. The Texans lead the AFC South at 3-1.

“Everyone’s frustrated,” running back Travis Etienne Jr. said. “It’s getting repetitive. Talking about it won’t help us. We just have to keep working. We just have to finish and be a little more mentally tough.”

Lawrence completed 18 of 33 passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions, with his short first-quarter touchdown pass to rookie wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. giving the Jaguars their first lead since Week 1. The Jaguars had trailed 34-3 at halftime of a 47-10 loss to Buffalo six days earlier.

“I thought we did some good things and we had some good opportunities,” Lawrence said. “We had a good plan. We were prepared for a lot of stuff. We had a lot of opportunities. We didn’t capitalize on all of them, unfortunately – and that’s kind of why we’re here now and didn’t win the game. We didn’t take advantage of some of those opportunities.”

Lawrence’s second touchdown pass – to wide receiver Christian Kirk – gave the Jaguars a 17-13 lead in the third quarter and was the only score of the second half until the Texans’ game-winning touchdown. The Texans stopped the Jaguars on downs after Jacksonville faced first-and-goal at the Texans 4-yard line late in the third quarter.

Rookie kicker Cam Little converted first-half field goals of 41 and 52 yards, with the second pulling the Jaguars to within one point – 14-13 – late in the second quarter.

“We’re that close to flipping the switch, making real plays during the game,” Pederson said. “We’re not making them now and that’s what’s holding us back.”

Stroud completed 27 of 40 passes for 345 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.

The Jaguars registered two sacks and no takeaways defensively Sunday, with defensive lineman Jeremiah Ledbetter registering a second-quarter sack and defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris registering one in the fourth quarter. They also had a special-teams takeaway early in the first quarter when safety Daniel Thomas recovered a muffed punt at the Texans 2-yard line to set up the game’s first touchdown.

“We just have to keep playing,” Lawrence said. “This is some adversity. It’s been tough. We’re not having the success we wanted and there are a lot of guys who put a lot of time, coaches and players and everyone who works for the team. It’s frustrating and it’s hard, but you have adversity and you have to get through it and get to the other side of it.

“It will help you in the long run. That’s what we’re preaching as a team.”

Jaguars 2024 Monday Night Football Game Report: Jaguars vs. Bills

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. – This was rough, rollicking and one-sided.

Really rough and really one-sided.

The Jaguars were outplayed in a big, big way early and never recovered in their 2024 prime time debut, with the Buffalo Bills scoring touchdowns on all five first-half possessions in a 47-10 victory in front of a raucous crowd at Highmark Stadium on Monday Night Football.

“We’re frustrated – and a little bit stunned, to be honest,” quarterback Trevor Lawrence said, adding, “Disappointed would be an understatement.”

Head Coach Doug Pederson called the loss “real shocking” and “very disappointing.”

“The reality of it is this is who we are,” Pederson said. “We’re not a very good football team. We have to get it fixed, we have to come up with some answers and we have to do it in a hurry.”

Bills quarterback Josh Allen threw four touchdown passes – all in the first half – and Buffalo scored on its first six possessions with the Jaguars never within double digits after the first quarter.

The Jaguars have lost eight of nine games dating to last season.

“The main thing is winning the football game,” wide receiver Christian Kirk said, “and we are just not winning the football games – nor are we putting ourselves in a position to win the football game.

“The most important thing right now is just winning a football game.”

The Bills led 13-0 after the first quarter and 34-3 at halftime. They out-gained the Jaguars 140-19 in the first quarter and 288-70 in the first half.

Lawrence completed 21 of 38 passes for 178 yards and one touchdown with one interception. Bills safety Damar Hamlin’s second-quarter interception marked Lawrence’s first turnover of the season and led to a Bills touchdown that gave them 24-point lead late in the first half.

“Players play, coaches coach – and when we step on the field, we have to make plays,” Lawrence said. “We have to take all the accountability, all the criticism, all the scrutiny. That’s our job, to go make the plays. We’re not doing that right now.”

Allen completed 23 of 30 passes for 263 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. Buffalo fans chanted “MVP, MVP, MVP” after multiple Bills second-quarter touchdowns.

The Bills, the four-time defending AFC East Champions, moved to 3-0. The Jaguars, after finishing 9-8 each of the past two seasons, are 0-3 with a road game against the AFC South-leading Houston Texans (2-1) next Sunday.

The Jaguars did not register a sack or a takeaway Monday. They have not forced a turnover this season.

“It’s a week-to-week deal,” Pederson said. “We’re three weeks in and we’re not very good right now. No one’s going to feel sorry for us. This is who we are right now and it’s not very good. We have to be honest with ourselves and I have to be honest with myself. We have to just keep plugging away.”

Jaguars 2024 Season Opener Game Report: Dolphins 20, Jaguars 17

“It feels terrible to be 0-1,” Jaguars center Mitch Morse said. “But what can you do except march on, attack the next work week, be very critical of yourself but also make it constructive? I thought they came out in the second half and made some good in-game adjustments.

“We were three and out, three and out. It puts a lot of stress in the defense. I thought the defense played really good game against a hell of an offense, and we have to do more. That’s a frustrating thing.”

Lawrence threw a touchdown pass, and the Jaguars’ run defense was impressive much of the game against one of the NFL’s best and fastest offenses. The running game was strong, too – but not enough for the Jaguars to win their second consecutive regular-season opener.

Running back Tank Bigsby rushed for 73 yards on 12 carries, and the Jaguars outrushed Miami 128-83.

Lawrence completed 12 of 21 passes for 162 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions, with a second-quarter touchdown pass to rookie wide receiver Brian Thomas a key play in a strong first half for the Jaguars.

Etienne had a touchdown run, with rookie kicker Cam Little’s first career field goal giving the Jaguars a 17-7 halftime lead. Tagovailoa completed 23 of 37 passes for 336 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions.

The Jaguars’ defense in coordinator Ryan Nielsen’s debut registered three sacks and no turnovers, allowing 400 total yards – including 317 passing. Defensive lineman Arik Armstead registered a sack for the Jaguars, with defensive end Travon Walker registering two.

“We beat ourselves today,” Hines-Allen said. “They had a lot of good players, but at the end of the day, I don’t feel like they beat us. I think we beat ourselves to put them in a position to capitalize off of it. Kudos to them. They’re a heck of a team. Hopefully we see them down the road.”
