Penn State and UCLA meet on the football field Saturday for the first since Lyndon B. Johnson was President of the United States and a young Joe Paterno was in his third season as coach of the Nittany Lions.
That’s right, the last time the Bruins and Nittany Lions played each other was in 1968. Penn State beat UCLA 21-7 in Los Angeles, and oddly enough, it was the sixth-straight year the schools met. They were the only six games they’ve ever played. For whatever reason, they decided to get together six straight times, and never called one another again.
Further proof that long-distance relationships can be difficult.
Now that they share a conference, we’re slated to see many more meetings between them in the future, but what can we expect from this first contest as conference foes?

This game marks a rare event for UCLA football: We’ve gone over how rare it is for these teams to play, but what if I told you this was the first time UCLA played a football game in the Eastern Time Zone since 2014? Well, it is. Ten years ago the Bruins travelled to Charlottesville, Virginia for their season-opener against Virginia. They won 28-20. The wait for the next trip won’t take nearly as long. After returning home to face Minnesota next week, the Bruins will be back in the Eastern Time Zone two weeks from now to face Rutgers. So many frequent flyer miles for this program.
This is the fourth straight season Penn State has started 4-0: For some programs, a 4-0 start is something to be excited about. For Penn State, it’s business as usual. Not only have the Nittany Lions started the last four seasons with a 4-0 record, they’ve gone 5-0 in the last three, and are looking to extend that streak to four straight with a win here. Last year the Lions reached 6-0 before losing to Ohio State, and as any Penn State fan will tell you, the strong starts are wonderful, but beating teams like Ohio State and Michigan would mean far more.
Penn State has won 24 straight against unranked teams: As that previous stat would suggest, this is a team that does well against unranked opponents. The streak of 24 straight wins against teams not in the AP Top 25 dates back to the 2021 season when the Nittany Lions lost 20-18 at home to Illinois in nine overtimes. Yes, that’s right, nine overtimes. The Nittany Lions got some revenge last week, beating a ranked Illinois 21-7.
Penn State vs. UCLA prediction, picks
UCLA’s introduction to life in the Big Ten has not been pleasant. The Bruins are 0-2 and have been outscored by 50 points. Both of those games have been at home and they’ve allowed at least 34 points in each of them. Now they’re traveling to Penn State, and it’s hard to imagine a defense that’s been run over by Indiana, LSU and Oregon will fare much better against the Nittany Lions. Perhaps the early start will lead to a sleepy Penn State performance, but I wouldn’t bet on it. Pick: Penn State -27.5
In Week 5 of the college football season, Colorado Buffaloes two-way sensation Travis Hunter continues to build his Heisman Trophy profile as his team prepares for a showdown against UCF in Orlando. Ahead of the highly anticipated matchup, Hunter sat down for an interview with legendary defensive back and Heisman winner Charles Woodson on FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff. The interview highlighted Hunter’s unique role and impact on both sides of the ball, drawing comparisons to Woodson’s own Heisman campaign in 1997.
Hunter, who has been playing at an elite level as both a wide receiver and a cornerback, is averaging an astounding 130 snaps per game. “There ain’t nobody out there doing 130 snaps a game,” Hunter confidently remarked when asked about how he compares to other players currently vying for the Heisman. His versatility and endurance have made him a focal point of Colorado’s resurgence under head coach Deion Sanders.
“My main goal right now is to stay focused on my team and the individual awards will come,” Hunter added.
The interview between Woodson and Hunter was not only a meeting of two football icons but also a passing of the torch. Woodson’s Heisman win came as a rare defensive player who also contributed as a receiver and special teamer. Hunter is following in those footsteps but taking it a step further by regularly playing significant roles on both offense and defense.
Hunter is living the dream of playing the sport he loves, but his journey hasn’t been without controversy. Since entering college football, “Saucy-T” has faced criticism for setting ambitious goals, particularly his desire to play on both sides, a rare feat in modern football. As a standout at Collins High School, he demonstrated his versatility, excelling as both a receiver and a defensive back. When he made the transition to Jackson State University, Hunter remained committed to his two-way playing style, continuing to prove his elite talent on offense and defense.
Hunter is often compared to a small but elite group of players, including Woodson, Champ Bailey, and Jabrill Peppers, who similarly defied convention by excelling in multiple roles. Yet, the physical and mental toll of being a two-way player is immense, and Hunter has consistently risen to the challenge. His ability to play extensive snaps on both offense and defense has set him apart in college football, with many wondering how this will translate to the NFL.
One notable debate centers around which position Hunter will play in the NFL. During a discussion on the St. Brown podcast, former NFL cornerback Richard Sherman weighed in on the subject. Having himself transitioned from wide receiver to cornerback in college, Sherman praised Hunter’s natural defensive abilities but expressed concerns about his potential as an NFL receiver. Sherman suggested that while Hunter is a solid receiver, his route running might not separate him from elite NFL defensive backs. However, Sherman firmly believes that Hunter will reset the market for cornerbacks in the NFL.
Hunter’s response to Sherman’s comments was thoughtful, noting that he once modeled his game after Sherman. As Hunter continues his college career, fans and analysts alike eagerly await to see which side of the ball, or possibly both, Hunter will dominate in the NFL.

UCF’s defense will have its hands full trying to contain him, whether he’s locking down receivers as a cornerback or making explosive plays as a receiver himself.
The game kicks off at 3:30 p.m. ET on FOX, with Hunter poised to once again make headlines. With every snap he takes, his case for the Heisman grows stronger, putting him at the forefront of one of the most captivating storylines in college football this season.
Beginning with Jayden Taylor’s opening kickoff return for a touchdown,it was the Newtown High School football team’s night in the Friday, September 20, home opener. The Nighthawks crushed New Fairfield 50-14 to improve to 2-0.
“We came out firing out of the gate — Jayden Taylor doing what Jayden Taylor does,” Newtown Coach Dan Farina said.
Newtown was dominant in all facets of its home opener from the get to and put this one on ice in the first quarter by racking up a whopping 35 points.
After Taylor’s 90-yard kick return to paydirt the defense came up with a stop and quarterback Ryan Schoffstall connected with Will McManus on a 53-yard touchdown pass, and the Hawks were well on their way.
Even when things appeared to not be going Newtown’s way the Hawks came up with a big play. Ayden Paulos scored Newtown’s third touchdown when he recovered a fumble in the end zone. On the team’s last conversion after touchdown attempt a high snap left backup kicker Nate Pickard to scoop the fumble, scramble to his right, and and connect with Graham Spencer for a two-point conversion.
The botched extra point-turned two-point conversion was reminiscent of what happened in the dramatic and bizarre 2023 state playoff win over Shelton. Farina pointed out that the Hawks practice what he called the fire drill play to give itself a chance when things go wrong.
“It’s a credit to our kids. We don’t stop until the final whistle. We coach them that way; we expect them to play that way,” Farina said.
Grady Marks had an interception which gave the Nighthawks possession inside the New Fairfield 40, leading to the Paulos TD. Taylor was on his way to the end zone, recovered his own fumble, then lost the ball trying to get across the goal line.
Farina said Taylor’s attempt to get points on the board was, in part, in an effort to help the starters build on its lead so the backup players could get into the game.
“That’s the job of the starters. Those guys make them better all week,” Farina said of the reserve players who work hard in practice.
Later in the opening quarter the Hawks added to their lead on a Paulos TD run, following a Kieran Garrity fumble recovery at the New Fairfield 15, and a Schoffstall-to-Will McManus 40-yard TD play.
In the second quarter Paulos scored on a two-yard TD run and Caden Cuomo had an open field tackle and interception to help the Nighthawks carry a 42-0 lead into the break.
It was time for the backups to shine once play resumed in the second half. Freshman Cam Kullgren had an impressive kick return. Marcus Gerace, the holder for kicks and backup QB, came in to man the pocket. The Rebels got on the board and trailed 42-7 heading to the fourth.
After New Fairfield’s second score Anthony West used a burst of speed to score from 25 yards out and the Hawks added that two-point conversion.
The Nighthawks return to action Friday, September 27, with a visit to Southington at 7 pm.

We’ve got what should be an entertaining division showdown on tap Sunday in Indianapolis between the Colts and the visiting Texans. Indianapolis, a rare home underdog, will look to upset a Texans team that has high hopes for this season following last year’s unexpected AFC South division title.
Sunday will be Anthony Richardson’s first start since he sustained a season-ending injury just five games into his rookie season. Richardson, a dual-threat quarterback, will likely lean on running back Jonathan Taylor, a former All-Pro who also dealt with injuries last season. On defense, the Colts are hoping to be vastly better than they were last year, when they allowed the fifth-most points in the NFL.
Houston is led by fellow second-year quarterback C.J. Stroud and what should be a prolific passing attack. Stroud, fresh off arguably the greatest season by a rookie quarterback in NFL history, should be even better this year with the offseason additions of wideout Stefon Diggs, running back Joe Mixon and Tank Dell’s return from injury. Defensively, the Texans have one of the league’s best pass-rushing duos in second-year man Will Anderson Jr. and veteran Danielle Hunter.

Texans vs. Colts prediction
I’m taking the road team in this one, although I could see the Colts pulling off an upset if Taylor gets going and the defense is able to get to Stroud. Houston’s passing game, though, and the Colts’ suspect defense are the two main reasons why I’m picking the Texans. I’m also expecting a big game from Mixon, who will face a Colts defense that was just 24th in the NFL last year in rushing yards allowed.
