Shohei Ohtani homers to lead off NLCS Game 4 for Dodgers against Mets

Shohei Ohtani homers to lead off NLCS Game 4 for Dodgers against Mets

NEW YORK (AP) — Shohei Ohtani made his point.

After Ohtani helped cap the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Game 3 win in the NL Championship Series with a three-run, eighth-inning homer, teammate Freddie Freeman gave the Japanese star what sounded like some good-natured ribbing.

“Freddie talked to me to make sure that I joined the party earlier than later,” Ohtani said through an interpreter.

So after Ohtani drove Jose Quintana’s second pitch into the New York Mets bullpen in right-center field in Game 4, Ohtani aimed a finger at the Los Angeles dugout as he left the batter’s box.

“I was able to do that this time in my first at-bat,” he said Thursday night after a 10-2 victory gave the Dodgers a 3-1 series lead and moved then one win from a World Series trip.

Ohtani took Quintana’s first pitch for a ball, then drove a sinker over the middle of the plate 422 feet for his third postseason homer. The likely NL MVP began the night 0 for 22 in the postseason when batting with nobody on base and 7 for 9 with two homers and eight RBIs when hitting with runners aboard.

“I think it was bigger for Sho just getting a hit with no one on base,” teammate Max Muncy said. “Pretty wild numbers.”

Ohtani hit the seventh leadoff homer in Dodgers postseason history. He also walked three times and scored four runs.

“He just has a superpower that you and me can’t do,” teammate Mookie Betts said this week.

The 117.8 mph drive was the third-hardest-hit postseason home run since Statcast started tracking in 2015, after Philadelphia’s Kyle Schwarber in last year’s NLCS (119.7 mph) and the New York Yankees’ Giancarlo Stanton in a 2020 AL Division Series (118.3 mph).

“I can’t even hit the ball that hard with an aluminum bat and Shohei is doing it,” Freeman said.

Quintana hadn’t allowed a home run in his previous eight starts since Aug. 20.

Ohtani’s postseason stats are rather muted by his standards: a .235 average, three homers, nine RBIs, nine walks and no stolen bases.

He led the NL with 54 homers and 130 RBIs in his first season with the Dodgers after signing a record $700 million, 10-year contract and stole 54 bases to become the first 50-homer, 50-steal player. Still recovering from elbow surgery in September 2023, the two-way star isn’t pitching this year.

Last week’s decisive fifth game win over San Diego in the Division Series was the most-watched Major League Baseball postseason game on record in Japan, averaging an estimated 12.9 million viewers, according to MLB.

Ohtani’s latest home run was hit at just after 9 a.m. Tokyo time.

“I’m sure it’s not easy for the people in Japan to be able to watch these games because of the time difference.” Ohtani said.

Texas, Oregon, Penn State lead AP Top 25; Ohio State drops to 4

Texas, Oregon, Penn State lead AP Top 25; Ohio State drops to 4

Oregon and Penn State each moved up a spot in the Associated Press college football poll Sunday following thrilling wins in high-profile games, and Top 25 newcomers Navy and Army are in the rankings together for the first time since 1960.

Texas strengthened its hold on No. 1 with its 31-point victory over Oklahoma. The Longhorns received 56 of 62 first-place votes, four more than last week and their most since they were a unanimous No. 1 in October 2008.

This weekend wasn’t as wild as the week before, when four of the top 11 teams were upset and only two teams held their spots in the ensuing rankings shuffle.

That’s not to say Week 7 was devoid of excitement.

Oregon’s 32-31 home win over Ohio State featured seven lead changes and moved the Ducks to No. 2 with the other six first-place votes. It’s their highest ranking since they ended the 2014 season at No. 2 after losing to the Buckeyes in the inaugural College Football Playoff championship game.

Penn State rose to No. 3 with a 33-30 overtime win at USC, the Nittany Lions’ highest ranking in seven years.

Penn State-USC was one of four games involving AP Top 25 teams that went to overtime Saturday, including three in the top 10.

Ohio State dropped two spots to No. 4, and Georgia remained No. 5. Miami, Alabama, LSU, Iowa State and Clemson rounded out the top 10.

Army, which beat UAB 44-10, and Navy, which was idle, broke through for their first simultaneous rankings since Oct. 3, 1960.

Their coinciding appearance that season lasted just one week. Army was 3-0 and ranked No. 18 before dropping two straight games and finishing 6-3-1. Navy had entered the rankings a week earlier, at No. 17, and ended the season 9-2 and ranked No. 4.

Army (6-0) and Navy (5-0) have not each been unbeaten at this point in a season since 1945, weeks after World War II ended and in the era when service academies were powerhouses of the sport.

POLL POINTS

LSU and Ole Miss were the biggest movers in the wake of the Tigers’ 29-26 overtime win. The Tigers went from No. 13 to No. 8, their first top-10 appearance since they were No. 5 in the 2023 preseason poll. Ole Miss, which lost for the second time in three games, dropped from No. 9 to No. 18.

No. 9 Iowa State, 6-0 for the first time since 1938, has its highest ranking since September 2021.

Tennessee had been in the top 10 in four straight polls before slipping to No. 11 following its 23-17 overtime win over Florida.

The SEC holds down eight spots in the AP Top 25. The Big Ten continues to have three teams in the top five — Oregon, Penn State and Ohio State — and six in the Top 25.

MOVING IN; MOVING OUT

Army and Navy are the only teams making their season debuts in the poll.

Utah, which has lost two straight, dropped out following its 27-19 loss at Arizona State.

Oklahoma, which had been No. 18 before its loss to Texas, is out of the AP Top 25 for the first time since the end of the 2022 season.

CONFERENCE CALL

SEC: 8 (Nos. 1, 5, 7, 8, 11, 14, 18, 19)
Big Ten: 6 (Nos. 2, 3, 4, 16, 22, 24)
ACC: 4 (Nos. 6, 10, 20, 21)
Big 12: 3 (Nos. 9, 13, 17)
American: 2 (Nos. 23, 25)
Mountain West: 1 (No. 15)
Independent: 1 (No. 12)

RANKED VS. RANKED

No. 5 Georgia at No. 1 Texas: This will be the third top-five matchup in four weeks following Georgia-Alabama and Ohio State-Oregon. The Bulldogs hope things go better than they did against Alabama. It’s only the fifth Georgia-Texas meeting since 1949 and the first since the Longhorns won 28-21 in the 2019 Sugar Bowl.

No. 7 Alabama at No. 11 Tennessee: Some of the shine has come off this matchup with Alabama’s loss to Vanderbilt and its struggle against South Carolina and Tennessee’s loss to Arkansas and overtime grind against Florida.

No. 24 Michigan at No. 22 Illinois: This is the first time since 2001 that both are in the AP Top 25 entering their game. Some fans might wonder why either team is ranked this time. Two-loss Michigan, coming off an open date, has been dreadful on offense. The one-loss Illini held off lowly Purdue 50-49 in overtime at home.

Lamar Jackson, Derrick Henry lead Ravens to massive, chaotic win over Joe Burrow, Bengals

Week 5 is a bit early for a playoff game, but it sure felt that way when the Baltimore Ravens squared off against the Cincinnati Bengals in what turned out to be a magnificent quarterbacks’ duel and 41-38 overtime win for Baltimore.

Week 5 is also a bit early for a referendum game, but it sure felt that way for Joe Burrow and the Bengals.

Week 5 is definitely a bit early for crowning the touchdown pass of the year, but Lamar Jackson may have pulled it off for the Baltimore Ravens.

Jackson appeared to have made a catastrophic overtime mistake, fumbling away a snap, but Cincinnati missed a winning field goal attempt, and Derrick Henry made the Bengals pay on the very next play with a 51-yard sprint that set up Baltimore’s walkoff field goal.

The instant-classic showdown began as a typical AFC North rock fight, but the second half turned into an Olympic sprint. The teams combined for an astounding six straight touchdowns to start the second half, then settled matters with a chaotic back-and-forth overtime.

The game began with a bit of history. On the Ravens’ first series, Henry rumbled into the end zone for his 100th career touchdown; he’s only the 27th player in NFL history to hit triple digits in touchdowns. Jackson later found Rashod Bateman to take a 14-7 lead midway through the second quarter.

But then the 2024 Bengals began to look more like the Bengals of yore — or the Tigers of Burrow’s college days at LSU. Cincinnati halted Henry in the end zone for a safety, then ran off another 15 unanswered points to take a 24-14 lead.

Burrow, who has effectively addressed all lingering injury concerns, delivered two highlight-reel passes in that run, starting with a 41-yard touchdown pass to Ja’Marr Chase:

He later found Andrei Iosivas in double coverage with a pinpoint rainbow that set up Burrow’s third touchdown pass, and second to Tee Higgins:

Also in the mix: a strange play where the officials wouldn’t let Cincinnati snap the ball … then dinged the Bengals for a delay-of-game penalty because they didn’t snap the ball.

The second half was a flat-out sprint, with the first six combined possessions ending in touchdowns, none smoother than Jackson’s brilliant disaster-to-glory touchdown pass with less than six minutes remaining in the game:

Burrow’s interception late in the fourth quarter ended the nothing-but-touchdowns second-half run at the worst possible time for Cincinnati. Fortunately for the Bengals, Jackson and the Ravens weren’t able to flip that into another touchdown; they managed to wrangle a 56-yard field goal from Justin Tucker to tie the game at 38-38.

Then came overtime, and Jackson’s crucial mistake. In Cincinnati territory and driving, the Ravens appeared primed to nail down a game-winning touchdown. But Jackson fumbled the snap, and Cincinnati played conservatively to set up a field goal … that Evan McPherson missed after a botched hold.

On the very next play, Henry stomped for 51 yards, setting up Tucker’s winner.

The loss spoiled what had been an outstanding day for Burrow. He threw for 392 yards and a career-high five touchdowns, but that fourth-quarter interception when the Bengals led by 3 allowed the Ravens to force overtime. Jackson, meanwhile, was 26 of 42 for 348 yards and four touchdowns, and the missed field goal meant his overtime fumble didn’t end up costing Baltimore the game. Henry carried the ball 15 yards for 92 yards.

Cincinnati is now in a world of trouble, at 1-4 and looking at a huge mountain to climb to get back into the playoff hunt. Baltimore, meanwhile, has resolved all concerns after its 0-2 start, with three straight wins and an offensive attack that’s clearly working to (near) perfection.

Looking ahead, the Ravens have the Battle of I-95 next week, facing off against Washington, followed by road games against Tampa Bay and Cleveland. Cincinnati, meanwhile, will have road games against the Giants and Cleveland before welcoming in the Eagles. By then, the identity of both of these teams will be a lot clearer, for better or worse.

Pittsburgh Steelers lead Dallas Cowboys in third quarter

Steelers block Cowboys kick

Dallas had seemed to find its offensive rhythm on its opening drive of the first half while moving the ball 50 yards on seven plays. Instead, it’s yet another drive where the Cowboys finish without points, after Pittsburgh blocked Brandon Aubrey’s field goal attempt from 38 yards.

Pittsburgh takes over on its own 27 yard line with 8:44 to go in the third quarter.

Touchdown, Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh takes its first lead of the night! Justin Fields, who left the game for two plays earlier in the drive to be evaluated for a potential head injury, threaded the ball between defenders for a 16-yard touchdown pass to Connor Hayward.

It’s 9-6, Steelers, early in the third quarter.

Justin Fields leaves game, then returns

Pittsburgh’s starting quarterback took a brutal hit near his helmet during the opening seconds of the third quarter and was replaced as he was evaluated for a potential concussion.

Kyle Allen — and not Russell Wilson, who is the third quarterback tonight — replaced Fields. Though Wilson took limited repetitions in practice this week, he is the designated emergency third quarterback.

Allen’s time under center lasted just two plays — enough time for him to complete a 19-yard pass — before Fields returned to the field.

Halftime: Cowboys 6, Steelers 3

Maybe it shouldn’t be surprising, but on a soaked field after a nearly 90-minute delay, the offenses have not been sharp tonight in Pittsburgh. The teams have combined for three field goals and 15 first downs.

It is a much more frustrating first half for Dallas. They outgained the Steelers 202-89 and averaged 6.5 yards per play, double Pittsburgh’s average. Two turnovers have ruined their chances to add to their point total, however.

Dallas regains the lead

Brandon Aubrey’s second field goal, from 33 yards, puts Dallas in front 6-3 with 8:51 to go before halftime.

Pittsburgh’s offense out of sync

Neither team has taken advantage of the other’s mistakes so far. After Dak Prescott’s fumble saved at least three points for Pittsburgh, its next drive went nowhere thanks to two false-start penalties. The Steelers have gone only 54 yards on their 18 plays so far.

Dallas gives the ball back

Each team started with a field goal on its opening drive. Each then watched as their quarterback turned the ball over on their second. Pressure by Steelers star rush end T.J. Watt collapsed the pocket around Dak Prescott and forced a fumble that Pittsburgh recovered in the final seconds of the first quarter.

Near-disaster for Pittsburgh

It’s been a shaky second possession for Steelers QB Justin Fields. One play after underthrowing an open receiver and nearly being intercepted, Fields fumbled when Linval Joseph of the Cowboys broke through the line and hit Fields in the backfield.

Fumbling has been an issue all season for Fields; he did it four times in his first four games.

Key Cowboys starter ‘out’

Marshawn Kneeland, the defensive end injured early in the first quarter, is considered questionable to return after appearing to injure his right leg. Kneeland was taken to the locker room on a cart.

Dallas punts

And that’s where the Cowboys’ lack of a rushing threat hurts them. They hurried up to the line of scrimmage facing third-and-1 hoping to catch Pittsburgh’s defense off-balance, but went to pass, and it ended with an intentional grounding penalty on Dallas. First punt of the night upcoming for Dallas.

Steelers answer

Both teams open with field goals on their first drive. Pittsburgh answers Dallas with a 41-yard field goal by Chris Boswell.

It’s Steelers 3, Cowboys 3, with 7:33 left in the first quarter.

Early injury for Dallas defense

Rookie Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland hobbled off the field during the Steelers’ opening series. If Kneeland misses time, it would be trouble for a defense that has already struggled this season. Kneeland was only starting because the Cowboys’ other edge rushers, Micah Parson and DeMarcus Lawrence, are out tonight with injuries.

Cowboys get on board first

Brandon Aubrey’s 55-yard field goal ends the Cowboys’ six-play, 21-yard first drive with points. Dallas is leaning on Dak Prescott’s arm early, as expected.

And we’re off

As this game readies for a delayed kickoff, Dallas receives the opening kickoff. Watch whether the Cowboys can get any semblance of a running game going. They have averaged 75.3 rush yards per game this season — dead last in the league.

What happened to Dallas’ vaunted defense?

Through their first four games under defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer this season, the Cowboys rank 26th in total defense (355.3 yds/gm) and are tied for 27th in scoring defense (26.0 points/game). The defense has stood strong in each of Dallas’ two wins but have been torched in both losses.

Zimmer took over for Dan Quinn, who was the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator for the last three years (2021-2023) before taking the head coaching job in Washington this offseason.

SNF to kick off at 9:45 p.m. ET

With rain and thunderstorms passing over Pittsburgh, tonight’s “Sunday Night Football” matchup is expected to start at 9:45 p.m. ET.

The game went into a weather delay before the start of the first quarter. If it starts at 9:45, the game will have been delayed by nearly 90 minutes. Buckle up, it’s going to be a late one, everybody.

Mike Tomlin not ready to name a permanent QB

Prior to Week 4, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was asked about naming a permanent starting QB moving forward. However, he said there was “no need” to do that at this time:

“There’s no need… When (Russell Wilson) gets to an appropriate point of health and we have a decision to make, I’ll make it and I’ll announce it and I’ll be really transparent about it. But until then, I don’t care how many ways you guys ask me, I got no intentions of making the decision that’s unnecessary at this juncture.”

This week, Tomlin was asked if they would continue to go with Fields when Wilson returns from his calf injury.

“There’s a potential for that,” Tomlin said. “But we’re not there as a I stand here today.”

Steelers riding with Justin Fields

This offseason, the Steelers signed QB Russell Wilson and traded for QB Justin Fields, sending the Bears a conditional 6th-round pick. Wilson, who dealt with a calf injury throughout preseason, was named the starting quarterback ahead of Week 1.

However, Wilson is yet to play this season due to his injury, with Fields thrust into the starting role and winning his first three starts for Pittsburgh before the Week 4 loss at the Colts.

In his three NFL seasons prior to this one (all with Chicago), Fields only won more than three games once (5-8 in 13 starts last season).

This season, Fields has completed 70.6% of his passes for 830 passing yards with three passing touchdowns and one interception. He also has 145 rushing yards and has scored all three of the Steelers’ rushing scores this season.

Cowboys TE Jake Ferguson stepping up

Jake Ferguson is second on Dallas in catches (16) and third on the team in receiving yards (159), having played in three games (he missed Week 2 vs. New Orleans with a knee injury). Since his return from injury, Ferguson has a team-high 13 catches for 144 yards (second on the team) over the last two games.

CeeDee Lamb living up to big offseason contract

The star WR leads Dallas in every major receiving category this season (20 receptions, 316 receiving yds, 2 receiving touchdowns), which he also did each of the last two seasons. In the Week 4 win at the Giants, he had season highs in catches (7) and receiving yards (98) and scored on a 55-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter.

Last season, Lamb posted career highs in receptions (135 — most in the NFL), receiving yards (1,749 — second in NFL behind Tyreek Hill) and receiving touchdowns (12 — third in the NFL behind Hill and Mike Evans), earning his first All-Pro selection and his third straight Pro Bowl nod.

▪ Lamb’s 135 receptions and 1,749 receiving yards were Cowboys’ franchise records (passing Hall of Famer Michael Irvin’s 1995 marks), and he became the 4th Cowboy with three straight seasons of 1,000+ receiving yards (Irvin, Terrell Owens and Dez Bryant).

Mike McCarthy’s Cowboys facing pressure to get over the hump

At 2-2, the Cowboys are off to their worst start since 2020, coach Mike McCarthy’s first season in charge and the only year in his tenure in which Dallas missed the playoffs (finished 6-10 in 2020).

After Dallas’ Week 2 loss vs. the Saints, owner Jerry Jones said McCarthy — who is in the final year of his contract — would be judged on postseason success.

“ I don’t think where (McCarthy ) is with his contract has anything to do with [the Week 1 win at] Cleveland … or how we played (in Week 2 loss vs NO ). We’re trying to get this team ready and in place to really make a run at the playoffs . … If we’ve got any albatross around our neck, it’s that we’ve been a good-to-very- good team during the season over the last four to five years with Mike, and we haven’t done well in the playoffs. So let’s trade some challenges during the season for doing well in the playoffs, if you want to look at it that way.”

Matchup of historic NFL teams

The Cowboys and Steelers are two of the NFL’s most storied teams, and this week, they’ll meet on SNF for the first time.

• Dallas and Pittsburgh have combined to win 11 Super Bowl titles (six for Pittsburgh, five for Dallas) and made 16 Super Bowl appearances (eight for both teams).

• The two teams have met in three Super Bowls, making Cowboys-Steelers the most common Super Bowl matchup in NFL history. They played each other in Super Bowl X in the 1975 season, XIII in the 1978 season and XXX in the 1995 season. Pittsburgh won the two Super Bowls in the 1970s, while Dallas took the 1990s matchup.

• The Cowboys and Steelers are the top two teams in wins in the Super Bowl era. The two teams are also first and second in regular season win percentage in the Super Bowl era (Dallas leads with .598, while Pittsburgh is 2nd at .590).

Since the Super Bowl XXX meeting nearly 29 years ago, DAL and PIT have met just six times, with each team winning three.

WNBA playoffs: Lynx take Game 3 over Sun for 2-1 series lead behind Napheesa Collier’s 26 points

The Minnesota Lynx are one win away from the WNBA Finals after a 90-81 victory over the Connecticut Sun in Game 3 of their semifinals matchup. The Lynx took a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series.

Connecticut cut Minnesota’s lead to 86-79 with 1:20 remaining in the fourth quarter, but could get no closer than that in a game the Lynx controlled throughout. Courtney Williams and Bridget Carleton nailed jump shots in the final minute to ensure the win.

Napheesa Collier bounced back from scoring nine points in Game 2 with 26 points and 11 rebounds to lead Minnesota on Friday. She had 16 in the first half, making 7-of-10 shots and surpassing her 14-point average for the first two games of the series.

Williams added 16 points and eight assists. Kayla McBride contributed 13 points with five assists, while Carleton scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds.

The Sun’s DeWanna Bonner scored 16 points and passed Candace Parker for No. 2 on the WNBA’s all-time playoff scoring list. Bonner now has 1,159 points to Parker’s 1,149. Only Bonner’s former Phoenix Mercury teammate, Diana Taurasi, (1,455) has scored more postseason points during her career.

Brionna Jones led the Sun with 21 points, four rebounds and five assists, followed by Marina Mabrey with 14 points. Alyssa Thomas scored 13 points with nine rebounds and seven assists, playing all 40 minutes of the game, while DiJonai Carrington added 13 points with five rebounds.

All five of the Sun’s starters scored in double figures, but the reserves added only four points. By comparison, the Lynx got 16 points from their bench.

Poor 3-point shooting hurt Connecticut. At one point, the Sun missed nine consecutive shots from behind the arc and shot 3-for-20 overall from 3. Mabrey went 1-for-11 on her 3-point attempts.

That contributed to Connecticut shooting 41% from the floor, with only Jones and Thomas shooting 50% or better. Meanwhile, Minnesota shot 57.4% overall, which might best explain the final score. Collier shot 11-of-19 and Williams made 7-of-10 shots.

Game 4 of the series is scheduled for Sunday, with the Lynx having an opportunity to close it out and advance to the WNBA Finals.

Lynx cruise past Sun in Connecticut for 2-1 series lead

She scored 26 points, making 11 of 19 shots. She grabbed 11 rebounds and had three assists, making her the first player in team history to have multiple 25-point, 10-rebound performances in the playoffs. It was, Collier said, the law of averages.

“I think they were normal shots I usually make,” the former University of Connecticut standout said of her shooting in the first two games of the series. “In crunch time I had to be aggressive, especially in the paint at one end and in coverage on the other. I knew I had to get up and pressure.”

The Lynx put the pressure on the Sun and put themselves on the cusp of a return to the Finals by finding their offensive rhythm without losing their defensive resolve.

They shot 57.4%, which is rather incredible considering they went 5-for-15 on threes. That means the Lynx hit 30 of 46 two-point shots. Four of five starters were in double figures, eight players scored four points or more, the Lynx bench outscored Sun reserves 16-4.

The Sun? they shot 41.1% and — with Mabrey going 1-for-11 from behind the arc — made only three of 20 three-pointers.

The Lynx have won two in a row since opening the series with a loss. A report surfaced Friday that Reeve had confronted Sun players for excessive celebration after that game. Asked about it Friday, Reeve chalked it up to competitive coaches and players in a competitive playoff series. Courtney Williams — Robin to Collier’s Batman on Friday — said she didn’t even see it. Connecticut coach Stephanie White shrugged it off. Neither Alyssa Thomas (13 points, nine rebounds, seven assists) nor Brionna Jones (21 points) commented.

MLB playoffs 2024: New York Yankees take 2-1 series lead over Kansas City Royals with Giancarlo Stanton’s home run

MLB playoffs 2024: New York Yankees take 2-1 series lead over Kansas City Royals with Giancarlo Stanton’s home run

NEW YORK — Giancarlo Stanton hit a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning amid a battle of the bullpens, and the New York Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 3-2 on Wednesday night in Game 3 of their AL Division Series at Kauffman Stadium.

Stanton finished with three hits, drove in two runs and stole a base for the first time in four years for the Yankees, who will turn to six-time All-Star pitcher Gerrit Cole on Thursday night with a chance to reach the American League Championship Series.

The Royals used four relievers before Kris Bubic took over for the eighth. The left-hander struck out Austin Wells before Stanton hit his 3-1 pitch nearly 420 feet to left to give New York the lead.

The Royals tried to answer off Luke Weaver in the bottom half, getting Bobby Witt Jr.’s first hit of the series and a two-out single by franchise stalwart Salvador Perez. Weaver recovered to get Yuli Gurriel to fly out to end the threat, and he also handled the ninth to earn the save and cap 4 1/3 scoreless innings by the New York bullpen.

The Yankees won despite another frustrating night in the postseason for MVP front-runner Aaron Judge. He went 0 for 4 with a walk, and is now 1 for 11 with only an infield single through three games against the Royals.

It helped that the powerful Yankees drew nine walks Wednesday night, giving them 22 for the series.

It was the first playoff game at the K in 3,268 days, since the Royals beat the Mets in Game 2 of the 2015 World Series. They won their first title in 30 years a few days later in New York.

The first baseman on that Royals team, Eric Hosmer, was on hand to deliver the first pitch for a crowd that included Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

The Yankees had some good swings against Seth Lugo’s dizzying array of nine pitches, but they had nothing to show for it early on.

Juan Soto flew out to center in the first on what would have been a homer in 17 ballparks. Judge followed with a liner snared by Witt at shortstop that had an exit velocity of 114 mph. And in the third, Gleyber Torres hit a ball to the warning track in right, moments after a review confirmed that his would-be RBI blooper down the line had landed foul.

The Yankees broke through in the fourth on Stanton’s double – Soto came around from first to score, though he might well have been out had Witt delivered a better relay throw to the plate. And in the fifth, Soto added a bases-loaded sacrifice fly.

The Royals answered with two in the fifth. Kyle Isbel got them on the board with a two-out double to left, and Michael Massey ripped a sinking liner that somehow missed Soto’s glove in right for an RBI triple.

Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt was dinged for both runs on four hits and a walk in 4 2/3 innings. Lugo went five for Kansas City, allowing two hits and walking four against the team that led the league in free passes this season.

UP NEXT

Yankees: Cole (8-5, 3.41 ERA) heads back to the mound Thursday night. He allowed four runs – three earned – over five innings in the opener Saturday night but got no decision in the 6-5 win for New York.

Royals: RHP Michael Wacha (13-8, 3.35 ERA) will face Cole again after pitching just four innings Saturday. He allowed three runs but was long gone by the time the Yankees scored the go-ahead run in the seventh.

King and prime minister lead tributes to ‘national treasure’

A look back at Dame Maggie Smith’s career

Dame Maggie Smith, best known for the Harry Potter films and Downton Abbey, has been remembered as “a true legend” of acting following her death at the age of 89.

Tributes have been paid by the King and prime minister, as well as numerous co-stars from her long career.

King Charles described her as “a national treasure”, while Sir Keir Starmer said she was “beloved by so many for her great talent”.

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe fondly remembered her “fierce intellect” and “gloriously sharp tongue”.

Miriam Margolyes said she was “the best of the best”, who combined “ferocity, a glint of mischief, delight and tenderness”.

“And enormous courage. I’ve been in awe of her, as all her colleagues are,” Margolyes told BBC News.

“I saw what a kind person she could be – as well as absolutely terrifying.”

Dame Maggie was known for her sharp tongue on screen and off during a varied and acclaimed career that spanned eight decades.

In the Harry Potter films, she played the acerbic Professor Minerva McGonagall, famous for her pointed witch’s hat and stern manner with the young wizards at Hogwarts.

Paying tribute, Radcliffe said: “She was a fierce intellect, had a gloriously sharp tongue, could intimidate and charm in the same instant and was, as everyone will tell you, extremely funny.

“I will always consider myself amazingly lucky to have been able to work with her, and to spend time around her on set.

“The word legend is overused but if it applies to anyone in our industry then it applies to her. Thank you Maggie.”

Emma Watson said she didn’t quite appreciate that young Hermione was sharing the screen “with a true definition of greatness” until her adult years.

Posting on Instagram, she remembered the star for being “real, honest, funny and self-honouring”.

“Maggie, there are a lot of male professors and by God you held your own.”

The National Theatre praised Dame Maggie’s “deep intelligence, sublime craft and sharp wit”

In hit ITV drama Downton Abbey, she played Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, the grand matriarch who excelled at withering one-liners through the show’s six series.

Elsewhere in her career, she won two Oscars – for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie in 1970 and California Suite in 1979.

She had four other nominations, and received seven Bafta awards.

In a statement, the King and Queen said: “As the curtain comes down on a national treasure, we join all those around the world in remembering with the fondest admiration and affection her many great performances, and her warmth and wit that shone through both off and on the stage.”

The prime minister agreed that Dame Maggie was “a true national treasure whose work will be cherished for generations to come”.

She “introduced us to new worlds with the countless stories she acted over her long career”, Sir Keir said.

Hugh Bonneville, who played the Earl of Grantham in Downton Abbey, said: “Anyone who ever shared a scene with Maggie will attest to her sharp eye, sharp wit and formidable talent.

“She was a true legend of her generation and thankfully will live on in so many magnificent screen performances.”

‘No-one quite like Maggie’

Dame Maggie reprised her role for the two Downton Abbey films. In 2022’s Downton Abbey: A New Era, her character died of the illness she revealed at the end of the 2019 film.

Co-star Dame Harriet Walter told BBC Radio 4’s PM programme she excelled at comedy as well as drama.

“She was a true comedian, but also I’ve seen her playing some incredibly heartfelt, deep, sad roles, which is the huge range of an actress like her,” she said.

“If she was merely funny or merely tragic, she wouldn’t quite have made that sort of impression.”

Michelle Dockery, who played Dame Maggie’s on-screen granddaughter Lady Mary Crawley, told the BBC: “There was no-one quite like Maggie.

“I feel tremendously lucky to have known such a maverick. She will be deeply missed and my thoughts are with her family.”

Lesley Nicol, who played Downton Abbey’s cook Mrs Patmore, told BBC Radio Ulster: “It’s a very close group of people so we’re all devastated to think she’s not around any more.”

Downton Abbey creator and writer Julian Fellowes told Variety magazine she was “a joy to write for, subtle, many-layered, intelligent, funny and heart-breaking”.

Downton followed the success of 2002 period drama Gosford Park, which earned Dame Maggie both Oscar and Bafta nominations for playing the Dowager Countess of Trentham.

Dame Kristin Scott-Thomas, who starred alongside Dame Maggie in Gosford Park, said she “took acting very seriously but saw through the nonsense and razzmatazz”.

“She really didn’t want to deal with that,” Dame Kristin added.

“She had a sense of humour and wit that could reduce me to a blithering puddle of giggles. And she did not have patience with fools. So you had to be a bit careful. I absolutely adored her.

“The last time I saw her, she was very cross about being old. ‘Maddening’ I think she said. Much loved, much admired and irreplaceable.”

Also paying tribute, a National Theatre spokesperson said her career “spanned the theatrical, film and television world without equal”.

Praising her stage performances, the statement continued: “She will forever be remembered as one of the greatest actors this country has had the inestimable pleasure of witnessing.”

Bafta added that she was a “legend of British stage and screen”.

Announcing the news of her death “with great sadness” on Friday, her sons Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin said she “passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning”.

They said: “An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end. She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.”

They thanked “the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and unstinting kindness during her final days”.

They added: “We thank you for all your kind messages and support and ask that you respect our privacy at this time.”

Dame Maggie began her career in the 1950s and was nominated for her first Oscar for playing Desdemona opposite Laurence Olivier in Shakespeare’s Othello in 1965.

The actress’s other memorable roles included 1985 Merchant Ivory film A Room With a View, which earned her another Oscar nomination and a Bafta.

She appeared as an English woman living in 1930s Italy in the film Tea with Mussolini, which was released in 1999; and was the firm but fair Reverend Mother in the two Sister Act films.

Sister Act co-star Whoopi Goldberg called Dame Maggie “a great woman and a brilliant actress”, adding: “I still can’t believe I was lucky enough to work with the ‘one-of-a-kind’.”

Rob Lowe, who starred with Dame Maggie in 1993’s Suddenly, Last Summer, recalled “the unforgettable experience of working with her”.

“Sharing a two-shot was like being paired with a lion,” he said.

“She could eat anyone alive, and often did. But funny, and great company. And suffered no fools.

“We will never see another. God speed, Ms Smith!”

The veteran actress also played the old woman who spent 15 years living in a van outside Alan Bennett’s house in a film adaptation of the writer’s The Lady in the Van in 2015.

Alex Jennings, who played Bennett, told Radio 4 she was “fearless” and praised her “brilliant technical abilities as an actress”.

Newcastle v Tottenham LIVE: Result and final score from Premier League after Alexander Isak restores lead

Anthony Gordon battles with Destiny Udogie at St James’ Park (Reuters)

Alexander Isak scored the winner for Newcastle United with a simple tap-in as they weathered a storm from visiting Tottenham Hotspur to secure a 2-1 Premier League win in an entertaining game at St James’ Park on Sunday.

Harvey Barnes’ first-half opener for Newcastle was cancelled out by a Dan Burn own goal after the break as Spurs dominated the chances in the second period but spurned numerous openings and were beaten by a lightning-quick break from the hosts.

Joelinton’s defence-splitting pass was perfect for Jacob Murphy who, after drawing out keeper Guglielmo Vicario, laid the ball on a plate for Isak to secure the three points for manager Eddie Howe’s side, who remain unbeaten at home since January.

Adding to Newcastle’s delight, their Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali made his first league appearance since being handed a 10-month ban for a breach of betting rules and received a rapturous reception from the home supporters.

Newcastle beat Spurs again at St James’ Park, albeit in a little tighter fashion than before. Newcastle are now seven points from nine in an impressive start. The Magpies opened the scoring with Harvey Barnes just before the interval. Lloyd Kelly crossed aptly from the left and the midfielder scored in back-to-back Premier League starts for the first time since November 2022. After the break, this was cancelled out by a rather comical Dan Burn own goal, as Nick Pope failed to deal with Spurs’ offensive pressure. Tottenham kept that impetus until the last knockings, largely inspired by Brennan Johnson, however just couldn’t get the final touch. 12 minutes from the end of regulation time, Newcastle struck against the run of play to win. Jacob Murphy was played in, and squared unselfishly for Alexander Isak to seal Newcastle’s 26th Premier League win over Tottenham, their joint-most against a single opponent in the competition (also 26 v Aston Villa). The Toon have now won both of their first two home matches of a league season for the first time since 2009-10 in the Championship, and first time in the Premier League since 2000-01. Newcastle go fourth after this, with Spurs having to settle for 10th. The hosts ended the game with an xG of 1.57, while Spurs finished with 1.26. Thank you for joining us this afternoon, goodbye!

FULL-TIME: NEWCASTLE UNITED 2-1 TOTTENHAM

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:30

Just before that change, Johnson frustratingly fouls Guimaraes. It’s not looking good for Spurs as Newcastle look to see this one out.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:28

What looks like a final Newcastle change, Miguel Almiron comes on for Gordon.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:28

The free-kick was poor by Gordon. Vicario claims and Spurs start a counter which finds Johnson on the right. He flashes it across the box but no one’s there!

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:26

Guimaraes wins a late foul from Kulusevski on the left and look at the passion! He turns and celebrates to the home crowd. They need to push their boys home now. Final stretch.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:24

Spurs are staring down the barrel of yet another defeat at St James’ Park. We’re going to have five minutes of added time here.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:24

Werner is in behind on the right. The legs are tired, but Burn has timed a tackle on the right byline to perfection. It’s another corner. Bergvall takes and it’s cleared for a throw on the right.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:22

It’s a messy attack, but Newcastle don’t care. Isak’s scruffy deflected effort has given the hosts a late corner. The ball is right where they want it. Vicario came for the ball and slipped, yet Spurs are able to clear from the set-piece.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:18

Bentancur is on, and he’s straight in the book. Gordon looks to bring the ball away down the left wing and Bentancur’s tackle is a bit heavy on the old Everton favourite. He got the ball, but it’s more about the follow through.

Porro sees a shot blocked, and then it squirms through to Johnson who shows a smart touch in the box on the right! He’s in, but fires way over!

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:10

Pope! What a save. He definitely knew where the cameras were, but that had to be made! Maddison was on the edge of the box and put it on his left, forcing Pope to dramatically tip away. From the resulting corner, Porro now strikes from range and Pope tips over again!

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:08

Newcastle have a free-kick floated over from the right-centre but it’s wasted. Tottenham counter and Johnson rushes in behind on the right. He crosses low and Guimaraes puts it behind for a corner. This is eventually cleared.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:06

Substitution Wilson Serge Eric Odobert Timo Werner

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:06

The corner comes over, and Dragusin heads wide left of the target.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:06

Guimaraes loses the ball to Maddison in midfield. He plays it to Son, and he finds Odobert. However, Krafth ushers the ball out for a goal-kick with his body. In the next phase, Burn botches a pass and Odobert debatably rushes it with the Newcastle defence all over the place. The recovery tackle comes in and it’s a corner on the left.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:02

After 316 days, Sandro Tonali is back in the Premier League. Longstaff makes way for the former Milan man.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:02

Maddison clips Guimaraes and picks up a rightful yellow card as he stopped the counter.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:02

Murphy forces a save from Vicario and Newcastle fans are up on their feet! It was a well-oiled, yet rare offensive foray from the Toon, and Joelinton found Gordon. He played in Murphy on the left and Vicario saved well at his near-post to put it behind for a corner.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:02

Substitution Lloyd Casius Kelly Lewis Kieran Hall

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:00

Johnson has warmed up really well so far. Murphy loses the ball for Newcastle and Kulusevski plays it to the former Forest winger. He goes for a deft low cross, yet Pope claims happily at his near post.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:58

Kelly is pressured on the left, as Johnson robs the ball. It’s eventually retrieved, yet Newcastle are having a bit of a wobble. Johnson then receives the ball again, and Kelly blocks for a Spurs corner on the right offensive side. It’s taken short and comes to nothing, ultimately.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:54

Substitution Harvey Lewis Barnes Jacob Kai Murphy

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:54

This is a dangerous area for a set-piece. Right of centre, about 25 yards out. Porro is interested and he whips one! It’s just high of the top-right corner!

14:50

Yellow Card Bruno Guimarães Rodriguez Moura

Son should’ve passed in the box and a great last-ditch tackle has Postecoglou shaking his head…

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:48

Odobert how’s that not gone in? Kulusevski spreads the play out to Johnson on the right. A deflected cross from the former Forest man floats to the back post and Odobert fires over from ridiculously close range!

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:46

For some reason, Udogie is high up the pitch and comfortably offside. Maybe stick to what you know…

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:44

What impact can Johnson have on this game? Last season in the Premier League, only Leon Bailey (seven) was directly involved in more goals as a sub than Brennan Johnson (two goals, four assists).

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:42

Isak is played through and this time he’s on! Great tackle from Dragusin to recover!

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:42

Kulusevski plays smartly with Son, but can’t get the ball under his control and Newcastle can stab it away. Livramento breaks out down the right past Odobert before Isak is miles offside.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:40

Yellow Card Yves Bissouma

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:40

Spurs start the second half, hoping for a better time than the first period. A lot to do, for Postecoglou’s now more offensively motivated side.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:38

Before the second half resumes, Sarr makes way for Brennan Johnson.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:36

Well, the visitors have it all to do in the second half. In fact, Tottenham have only won one of their last 29 Premier League away games when trailing at half-time (D7 L21). Postecoglou will be wanting to make a more impactful shift on Nick Pope’s goal, while being wary of the continued enterprise of Alexander Isak and Harvey Barnes. In the first half, Newcastle worked up to an xG of 0.49, while Spurs found their xG stunted at just 0.29. Discipline has been a point of interest in this one too. The hosts have received three yellow cards in the opening half, only the second time they have done so in a Premier League first-half under Eddie Howe.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:32

Newcastle lead Tottenham at the break here in the North East, thanks to a well-taken Harvey Barnes goal. We’ve seen a relatively open first half so far, and before the officials’ changed around due to Ian Hussin’s quad injury, Tottenham thought they had the lead. However, Cristian Romero’s 12th minute header was ruled out for offside. Following this, Pape Matar Sarr forced Nick Pope into work twice, yet the hosts stayed in it, and, somewhat against the run of play – took the lead in the 37th minute. Lloyd Kelly benefitted from Spurs switching off at a throw and he crossed nicely from the left for Barnes to side-foot home from the centre of the box. With the goal, Barnes has scored in back-to-back Premier League starts for the first time since November 2022 for Leicester City.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:24

HALF-TIME: NEWCASTLE UNITED 1-0 TOTTENHAM

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:24

Maddison is down after the challenge of Burn in the area. It’s initially given as a goal-kick. In truth, it did look as if Maddison got his foot stomped on inadvertently.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:22

It’s been open at times, this half, but now we’re seeing a bit of a scrappy end. Hopefully the second period goes up to the levels we saw before the officials’ stoppage.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:18

Yellow Card Joelinton Cássio Apolinário de Lira

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:18

Isak nearly finds himself played through on the right, but can’t get a lanky leg onto the ball and Tottenham clear.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:16

The set-piece is wasted, and it turns out Longstaff was fouled in the Newcastle box to reset the play.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:14

Longstaff fouls Udogie after he gets caught on the wrong side. Now Spurs have a free-kick in a dangerous area.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:14

Postecoglou is undoubtedly unhappy about the simple concession of that goal. His side need to play up, or can expect a talking to at the break!

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:10

Udogie fouls Livramento as the latter strides down the right wing. It’s a silly arm across the newly called-up England man. Gordon to take, can Spurs survive?

Goal Harvey Lewis Barnes

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:06

Kulusevski breaks and while he tries to pick out Odobert, it’s knocked behind for a Tottenham corner on the left. Longstaff blocks! Wow, that was well-worked. Maddison played the ball short to Son and he found Porro on the edge. Straight from the training ground.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:06

Yellow Card Pape Matar Sarr

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:04

Isak makes interesting inroads. It flicks off a Spurs body and now there will be a corner on the left, the seventh of the game in total. Newcastle’s fourth corner of the match is punched by Vicario and eventually cleared

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:02

Newcastle can’t get Spurs pressure away after the set-pieces. It comes to Porro, and he slams one – yet it swirls high of Pope’s goal.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:02

Sarr has another go as Spurs keep building. He curls one to the right side of the goal, and Pope makes a routine stop. Corner on the right.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:00

Spurs are starting to grow in confidence. Maddison is being brought onto the ball a bit more. After the stoppage with the officials, Newcastle are sitting a little deeper.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:00

Yellow Card Lloyd Casius Kelly

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:00

Sarr smashes one low from range and Pope gets down to the left centre of his goal. It ricochets kindly out of danger. That was a sweet strike.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:56

Oderbert goes for a run at his marker on the right. Hopes are high for the Burnley man, yet his shot on Pope’s goal flies comfortably over.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:56

After a brief interval in play, with a new lino, we’re back in action.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:56

It looks like we’re swapping officials here. Linesman Ian Hussin’s quad looks to have gone. He trades places with fourth official Darren Bond.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:50

The corner from Gordon comes in. Joelinton is in there and Vicario fails to punch with confidence. Krafth then shoots and it’s deflected behind for another corner on the left. Lloyd heads over from close range. He just got under the delivery.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:48

Oderbert crosses from the right, but it’s an easy claim for Pope. Up the other end, Gordon latches on to a forward pass down the right. Romero flies back and puts in an excellent challenge for a Newcastle corner on the right.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:46

Romero heads home! But, it’s offside! The ball from the right was superb, and the header powerful through Pope’s hand, yet the lino’s flag stops Spurs’ celebrations immediately.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:44

Botman cuts out a great pass through the Newcastle back line. He then punts it long to Gordon on the right central channel, who touches it inside and plays it across to Barnes on the left. The former Leicester man cuts back on his right and wraps one, yet it’s just wide of the top-right corner! Close!

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:42

Since the beginning of last season Tottenham have lost five of their 11 Premier League games without Micky van de Ven (W5 D1) , just two fewer defeats than across the 29 league matches he’s been involved in (W16 D6 L7). Can Dragusin and co. step up?

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:38

The corner is long, yet in the next phase, Isak dispossesses Son and crosses from the right, hitting the bar!

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:38

Barnes darts in on the left and Dragusin, the stand-in for the injured Van de Ven, tracks back brilliantly to slide it behind for a corner on the left.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:38

Barnes is making just his eighth Premier League start for Newcastle (16 sub apps). He notably did score on his most recent start versus Brentford in May.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:36

Barnes and Joelinton link up smartly on the left. The Brazilian puts in a low cross, yet Vicario claims with ease. Positive start.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:36

Guimaraes floats in an early free-kick from the centre of the park. Isak tries to bring it down, yet can’t get it properly under control and Spurs clear.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:34

Away we go! This game has never seen a league 0-0, hopefully this goal-centric trend continues!

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:34

The saxaphone rings out at St. James’ Park, and after a brief chat with referee Robert Jones, it seems the hosts will get us under way.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:32

The players are making their way out to the pitch and the atmosphere is building here. There’s a superb homage to Sandro Tonali reading ‘Midfield Maestro From Milano’. He returns after his gambling ban. Since arriving on Tyneside, Tonali has only played 13 times, yet his quality has already made him a firm favourite in Newcastle. Buoyed on by the Wednesday night Carabao Cup win, in which the Italian featured, Newcastle will be looking for a repeat of the drubbing they subjected Spurs to last season.

13:28

Tottenham change two of the side that started in the 4-0 thrashing of Everton as Radu Dragusin and Pape Sarr come in for Micky van de Ven and Brennan Johnson. Johnson is among the substitutes, but Van de Ven is not in the squad, while forwards Dominic Solanke and Richarlison are both absent through injury. With his inclusion, Wilson Odobert is the first teenager to start back-to-back Premier League games for Tottenham since Ryan Sessegnon on New Year’s Day 2020.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

TOTTENHAM SUBSTITUTES: Fraser Forster, Archie Gray, Ben Davies, Djed Spence, Alfie Devine, Lucas Bergvall, Rodrigo Bentancur, Brennan Johnson, Timo Werner.

TOTTENHAM (4-3-3): Guglielmo Vicario; Destiny Udogie, Radu Dragusin, Cristian Romero, Pedro Porro; James Maddison, Yves Bissouma, Pape Sarr; Wilson Odobert, Son Heung-Min, Dejan Kulusevski.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:22

Newcastle make one change from their last Premier League match as Harvey Barnes comes in for Jacob Murphy, who drops to the bench. Midfielder Sandro Tonali played against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday. That was his first appearance since a 10-month ban for breaching betting regulations, he is also among the substitutes. Joe Willock is out with a thigh injury. Defender Fabian Schar serves the final game of a three-match suspension.

Newcastle won the last Premier League meeting between the clubs, emerging victorious 4-0 at St. James’ Park last season. Alexander Isak led the Magpies with goals in the 30th and 51st minute. Anthony Gordon and Fabian Schar were also on target. In fact, the Toon are in the midst of a nine-match home unbeaten streak (W5 D4 L0) dating back to February’s fixture against Luton Town. Tottenham played out a draw in their only prior league contest away from home this season.
