Anthony Richardson returns as Colts beat Miami Dolphins, move to 4-3 on season

Anthony Richardson returns as Colts beat Miami Dolphins, move to 4-3 on season

After one quarter, Richardson was just 1-of-7 for 15 yards and led the team with four carries for 30 yards.

The Colts and the Dolphins traded possessions throughout the second quarter with nothing to show for it until the Dolphins connected on a 33-yard field goal to go up 10-0 with 22 seconds left in the half.

But the Colts quickly got into field goal position with a touchback and a 33-yard completion to wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr., and kicker Matt Gay sent a 52-yard kick straight through the uprights to put the Colts on the board heading into halftime.

Richardson completed four passes for 61 yards in the half and the Colts combined for 74 total rushing yards. By comparison, the Dolphins had 115 rushing yards and Huntley completed seven passes for 87 yards.

FIFA announced today that Inter Miami CF has become the penultimate team to seal a spot at the new FIFA Club World Cup™ after winning the 2024 MLS Supporters’ Shield, confirming the Club as the best team throughout the 2024 Major League Soccer (MLS) regular season. Inter Miami will also open the tournament as the host team and play in the inaugural game of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™ in their hometown of Miami.

Inter Miami, captained by FIFA World Cup™ winner Lionel Messi, broke the all-time MLS record for the most points in a single season this year, completing their 2024 campaign with 74 points having recorded 22 wins, eight draws, while incurring only four defeats, from February to October.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced the news during a fan and team celebration following Inter Miami’s final MLS regular season match against New England Revolution at Chase Stadium on Saturday.

“We all know how Miami is in love with football and how Inter Miami is supported from across Florida and beyond for your exciting brand of football,” said the FIFA President. “Congratulations on your wonderful 2024 Supporters’ Shield success. “We are looking forward to you hosting the opening match in Miami on Sunday, 15 June 2025,” added Infantino. “It’s sure to be a great celebration for global club football as the tournament features the best 32 clubs in the world, and provides a new opportunity for clubs, players, coaches, and fans alike to take their stories to the world.”

With Inter Miami’s involvement confirmed, 31 of the 32 FIFA Club World Cup 2025 participating clubs have been locked in. The remaining slot will be determined by the outcome of the 2024 CONMEBOL Libertadores final to be played on 30 November 2024 in Buenos Aires, ensuring that the full line-up of clubs will be known before the draw in December 2024. Four iconic South American clubs still have hope to join the party in the U.S. next year.

Recap | Revs close 2024 season with 6-2 loss at Inter Miami CF

Recap | Revs close 2024 season with 6-2 loss at Inter Miami CF

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (October 19, 2024) – The New England Revolution (9-21-4; 31 pts.) concluded the 2024 MLS campaign with a 6-2 loss to Inter Miami CF (22-4-8; 74 pts.) on Saturday night at Chase Stadium. The Revolution’s Luca Langoni and Dylan Borrero scored in the first half, both goals aided by Alhassan Yusuf, but Miami’s Luis Suarez answered with a brace to tie the match before halftime. In the second half, Lionel Messi came on as a substitute and lifted the hosts to victory with three goals and an assist.

Similar to the season’s first meeting with Inter Miami, New England began the night on the front foot, tallying a goal within the opening two minutes of the match. Langoni raced onto a through ball from Yusuf and capitalized on a deflection to poke home his third tally of the year only 73 seconds into the match. Langoni concludes the season with five goal contributions in his first 10 MLS appearances.

The Revolution doubled their lead in the 34th minute when Borrero tapped the ball through the legs of Inter Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender. The Colombian netted his first goal of the season in his 10th start of the year. Yusuf, who made his return to action after missing one while on international duty with Nigeria, registered his second helper of the campaign on the play. However, in the 40th minute, Suarez pulled one back for the hosts and tacked on the equalizer minutes later, leveling the proceedings at 2-2 heading into the intermission.

New England continued to press for a result in the second half, seeing two scoring opportunities from Giacomo Vrioni miss just wide of the mark. The match tilted in Miami’s favor when Lionel Messi entered in the 57th minute. With his first touch, Messi set up the go-ahead goal from Benjamin Cremaschi. Bobby Wood appeared to bring the Revs back to level terms when he poked his own deflected shot over the line, but a handling offense erased the goal.

Messi closed the scoring with three goals of his own to put the game out of reach. With the result, Inter Miami surpassed the Revolution’s 2021 regular season points total (73) to set a new MLS record with 74 points.

MATCH NOTES

  • Luca Langoni scored his third goal of the season 73 seconds into Saturday’s contest. The Argentine logged 87 minutes and a team-high four interceptions in his 10th appearance.
  • Dylan Borrero doubled the advantage in the 34th minute with his first goal of the season. Borrero recorded a team-best three chances created.
  • Alhassan Yusuf, who returned to the lineup after missing last week’s match through international duty, registered his second MLS assist in his fifth league start.
  • Yusuf, who also helped create Langoni’s opening goal, registered team highs in duels won (9) and recoveries (8).
  • Xavier Arreaga returned from international duty for his 25th Revolution start across all competitions. In a 90-minute shift, Arreaga had a team high 12 clearances.
  • Matt Polster made his 31st start of the season to tie his career high (2023). He finishes the season as the team leader in minutes played.

Miami 52-45 Louisville (Oct 19, 2024) Game Recap

Miami 52-45 Louisville (Oct 19, 2024) Game Recap

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — — Cam Ward’s offensive line gave him plenty of time to throw on some big plays. On others, he created the extra time he needed to find his target on his own.

The combination kept No. 6 Miami ahead and eventually created opportunities for teammates to win a shootout to remember.

Ajay Allen followed Ward’s fourth touchdown pass with a 2-yard, go-ahead score early in the fourth quarter, Damien Martinez added a 30-yard insurance TD run with 4:05 remaining and the Hurricanes held off Louisville for a wild 52-45 victory on Saturday.

A series recently defined by high scoring added its most exciting chapter thanks to Ward, who completed a bunch of explosive plays on the way to a school-record seventh consecutive 300-yard passing performance. More importantly, the Hurricanes (7-0, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) are off to their best start since beginning 10-0 in 2017.

And the Heisman Trophy candidate made sure to credit everybody for making it happen.

“We got one of the best O-lines, one of the best receiving corps, got a great OC,” Ward said, referring to offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson. “All I do is put the ball in play. You see today I’m throwing to wide-open people and they make contested catches when they need to.

“At the end of day, we just have to continue to do the little things. If we do the little things right, all the other plays that we have, explosive plays, those take care of themselves.”

The Hurricanes withstood several Louisville rallies from double-digit deficits, the last of which was Tyler Shough’s 4-yard TD pass to Duke Watson that tied the game at 38 early in the fourth. Ward followed by hitting Samuel Brown for 59 yards, setting up Allen’s go-ahead score with 11:17 remaining.

“We knew it was going to be back and forth,” Miami coach Mario Cristobal said. “This is a win against a really good team.”

Martinez’s bullish TD run provided a cushion, though Shough’s 4-yard scoring pass to Ja’Corey Brooks with 54 seconds left got them within a touchdown. Ward knelt three times to close out the thrilling road win and reclaim the Schnellenberger Trophy, awarded to the winner between programs coached by legendary Howard Schnellenberger.

Ward completed 21 of 32 passes for 319 yards to break the Miami record for consecutive 300-yard games most recently held by Tyler Van Dyke in 2021. Ward is four away from the Miami all-time record for 300-yard games, a mark of 11 shared by Van Dyke and Brad Kaaya.

Xavier Restrepo had nine catches for 101 yards and a TD, and Jacolby George and Brown caught scoring passes of 27 and 49 yards respectively as the ‘Canes outgained Louisville 538-448. Brown led Miami with 125 yards on three receptions.

Shough completed 31 of 51 for 342 yards and four scores as well for the Cardinals (4-3, 2-2). Brooks had six catches for 107 yards.

“We had some chances,” Louisville coach Jeff Brohm said. “I do think our guys played hard, but it wasn’t good enough. We definitely have not gotten off to good starts. I applaud our team for hanging in there and playing to the end, but we’ve got to play better football.”

There was defense

For all the yardage compiled by both teams, their defenses contributed key takeaways that factored in the outcome. Miami linebacker Raul Aguirre Jr. might have made the biggest with an end-zone recovery of Isaac Brown’s fumble caused by Simeon Barrow’s perfectly-placed helmet hit on the ball that provided a 24-14 lead in the second quarter.

Louisville’s Thor Griffith jarred the ball from Mark Fletcher Jr. that Jordan Guerad recovered at the Miami 26, leading to Brooks’ 21-yard TD pass from Shough.

Money-down payoffs

Miami converted 9 of 15 third-down chances, including Ward’s TD pass to Restrepo. The ‘Canes also made both fourth-down opportunities. Louisville converted all three of its fourth-down chances but was just 3 of 12 on third down.

The Takeaway

Miami: After comeback wins over Virginia Tech and Cal, the Hurricanes had to beat back Louisville a lot. Ward bought time and found receivers, and the nation’s top offense continued doing what it does with a balanced attack that also rushed for 219 yards. That keeps them in the ACC mix.

Louisville: Every time the Cardinals seemed down and out against Ward and the ‘Canes, they answered with a gutsy scoring drive. The defense certainly helped with a takeaway and key defensive stands, just not enough to stop Miami’s ground game from taking over in the fourth quarter. They’ve now lost three of four and the challenge now is salvaging the remainder of a daunting schedule.

Up Next

Miami: hosts in-state rival Florida State in ACC play.

Louisville: visits Boston College on Friday night with a short turnaround.

Miami Dolphins Postgame Quotes 10/6

(On his thoughts after a game like that)

“That’s a character-building win, you know. A lot of stuff went wrong, it’s like, man that was a pretty ugly ballgame, especially in the first half. But one thing we didn’t do is we didn’t flinch. We didn’t relax, we just stayed hungry, kept fighting, kept believing and found a way to get the win when it mattered. Your big-time players have to come up with big-time plays in big-time games and the way we started running the ball in the second half was inspiring. We still gave up too many yards rushing on defense, there’s a lot to clean up, lot of ball that we can work on. But we’ve got a bye week, we’re going to study ourselves, we’ll figure out how to get better and come out of this bye and try to get another win.”

(On if it was a frustrating day even though the Dolphins came away with the win)

“When you get a win, especially after we haven’t had a win for a few weeks, I don’t know, you can’t be too frustrated. I feel pretty good right now. It could definitely be better. We will grade it, we will clean it up and we will try to improve. But you know, it’s been so long since we’ve got a win, I’m just going to enjoy this one. 24 hours, 24 hours to enjoy it.”

(On the fact that other than the turnover that set up the Patriots’ touchdown, how the Dolphins defense didn’t give up many yards)

“One of the things we try to preach is coming off of turnovers, having a sense of urgency and keeping points off the board or hold them to three. We had opportunities there. It was a bust and also (inaudible), they capitalized. It’s the NFL and they’ve got some good players. They made a big-time play. That’s something we know we can fix and we fixed it and we played a lot better. They had a really good game plan in the run game and way too many yards. One thing we’ve learned is we’ll fix it the following game, let’s just keep playing ball. Nobody has to try to do more than their job, just keep doing your job and we’ll be okay.”

(On the bye week and if it comes at a good time for the team)

“It really doesn’t matter, right? This is the time, so we’re definitely going to study ourselves and during the bye week, I always try to go back and watch every play and see what I was doing. See what works, see what didn’t work and then kind of figure out going forward, do more of the stuff that works and do less of the stuff that doesn’t.”

“Any fullback dive might be the day-one install for every offense in America, high school to Peewee, Pop Warner, everything. It was cool to end a 17-play drive like that. Credit to the offensive line, I didn’t have to do anything. Center, left guard watched their guys, they climbed up to the linebackers, so for a two-yard run to cap a statement drive is something that we needed desperately. As a team, to score a touchdown at that moment, it was a team drive, it was a team touchdown. So, I think it’s really a testament to all of our work over the last month or so, trying to get back right. It was a long drive capped off by a nice touchdown.”

(On this being the first time the team has had a real physical presence this year)

“I think it goes back to trusting things. We were running the ball quite a bit in the first half. Whether it’s a penalty here or a little procedural thing there, it kind of got us off track. We get four-yard runs, six-yard runs, but we trusted each other. Coaching staff, all the way down to the players. Doing your one-eleventh. That’s all that a running game is. A full team playing all four quarters. And I don’t think, like you said, we haven’t seen that quite yet out of our team. It’s something we’re working on, it’s our process that we’re building towards, so to see a seventeen-play drive in the fourth quarter, when we need it, I think was pretty cool for our entire process, for our entire organization to go through that together.”

(On going back to Miami with a win)

“I think you’re a couple plays away from a win or a loss, and somewhat of a sloppy execution game you could say. Being able to validate that the process that we’re building towards something. You see glimpses on tape, week-in and week-out, then you have the results of a loss, it can sting, it’s frustrating, it’s demoralizing, it’s tough. When you get that win, you’re able to say, ‘okay we’re on the right track, we’re building towards something right.’ But it’s not good yet, it’s not good enough yet. So, that little tweak in the mindset, fighting to find that silver lining I think is extremely important for our team going into a bye week 2-3, to be able to right the ship, to be able to continue to cross the Ts and dot the Is and make sure we’re a better football team at the end of the season than when we started.”

(On if any other plays from the game stand out to him)

“Yeah I think Jaylen Wright (RB), definitely stepped up big. One of his biggest runs of the day was called back because of a holding call. To see him not blink, to be able to go back and convert on a first down later in that same drive, that I think was really cool to see. Raheem (Raheem Mostert, RB) to come back and be able to play physical, you see him, he’s the fastest guy on the team, one of the fastest guys on the team. To be able to run, yards after contact and push that pile, doesn’t seem like a whole lot but second and three is a whole heck of a lot better than second and eight. To be able to find those creases, I think both of those guys played really hard, really physical and it was really cool to see them flourish in the fourth quarter like that.”

(On Tyler Huntley in the huddle)

“His personality was coming out in a number of different ways, and I loved it. It’s more than just a play call, right. As a quarter back, when you get a little bit more comfortable, he’s been here a couple weeks now, to be able to see his little impacts, his little points of emphasis in the huddle, being able to make guys lock in on their assignments and details and understanding the circumstance of the game, I think that was really cool for Snoop to be able to do that for our offense because that’s what a leader is. He’s coming in a tough spot as a quarterback and to be able to have command, to be able to find that confidence to voice himself, for guys to listen and respect that was everything that you could hang your hat on for this offense right now.”

(On if there was a point where the offense could feel the command from Huntley)

“I think that was in the second half. To understand that we were going through adversity, mishaps, things we can’t control. Whether it was a wild snap, a blocked punt, a missed field goal, we had all those things happening in the first half. To be able to have that confidence and command and say ‘no matter what happens, we can’t control that, we can control this right now’, that was pretty special to see. Anybody can have command when it’s all going good, but when you’re playing from behind, when it’s gritty like that, when you’ve got to get a couple first downs to string along a drive and have command when it’s not going well, I think that was the biggest respect Snoop got from all of us.”

(On the offense playing from under center)

“Either way it doesn’t really matter, just get the ball in our hands, and we will try and make it work. They were giving us some good looks, at the end of the day we just try and exploit them and take advantage.”

(On overcoming the first half mistakes)

“It was fairly tough. You see what’s going on like when we were in the red zone, and then the ball gets snapped behind us and Ally [Alec Ingold] recovers the snap, little things like that, are just putting us in a bind, but honestly we just have to overcome those things.”

(On how not to have the mistakes get the team down)

“I guess you just have to have a talk with the guys and you know after that the whole thing happened, I just jumped right in and said, ‘everyone let’s go, let’s pick it up, and that’s not how we play ball. We have to stop making these critical mistakes and go out there and do what we do.'”

(On how it feels to be back)

“It’s been good and I don’t know what my stats are but I really don’t care. I’m just happy we got the biggest stat which is that W, and honestly it feels good. Just watching the team from afar and the sidelines these past couple of weeks, it has been a little bit of a mental stressor but at the same time it has been one of those things that I just have to get healthy and get back out there for the boys and I was able to do that today.”

(On getting the run game going this week)

“It felt good, after a hard-working week of practice. We were able to focus on the details and paying attention and having the right aiming points and right tracks and everything. I just feel like it all came together in the second half. I felt like we were getting good movement thanks to the offensive line. We were getting good movement you know and getting it up to the second or third level. It opens things up for the run to produce great runs.”

(On the drive at the end of the game and Tyler Huntley’s play)

“He is a pro and he is here for a reason. Coach brought him in for a reason. He is somebody we can lean on, you know someone who he is leader already and he has only been here for like three weeks. I feel like he has done a great job in the system for how short of a time he has been here. Just him being out there, just him getting everyone lined up and paying attention.”

“This win has been needed. We have had a rough past few weeks, you know what I am saying. But that is just the beat of the game. We put those past games in the past and you know we just have to stay in the present. We got a win this week going into a bye week and then we come back with the same mindset to win.”

(On getting the win in a close game)

“The only satisfaction relies on winning. We got the job done and that is all that we came out here for and I am going to enjoy this one. It’s just another game on the schedule. Winning in this league is all that matters. Each week is its own challenge. There are different ways of winning, but at the end of the day, in that column there is only win or loss. Every week defensively, offensively, special teams, there are different scenarios that help you win games and sometimes you have to lean on certain things. Obviously, objectively, you want every group to come together and operate as one. It doesn’t always go that way but at the end of the day we figured out a way to win.”

(On getting a win heading into the bye week)

“You don’t want to go into a bye week with however many days off with a loss. You want to go into the bye week with momentum and I’m glad that we got it. Now we’ve got to keep rolling. I’m going to spend some time with my family, relax and kick it a little bit. Spend some time with my wife and kids. I’m going to try and catch a game (at his college, FIU).”

(On getting the win heading into the bye week)

“We’re 2-3 and the whole season is ahead of us. It’s great getting a win going into the bye week, but there’s a lot to correct. We did it, we won, but I think we have a lot going forward for us to work on and work on what worked today.”

(On how he thought the game went)

“Our offense was moving the ball and I had total faith. We have powerful running backs and the ground game was awesome today. I don’t care how we win, if we move the ball, we move the ball. There’s no ugly victories. It is hard to win in this league. I don’t care who you are or how good your team is, or what the score is. We did it, we have things to clean up, but we did it.”

(On if he thought the defense played well)

“We played good, but we can play better. That’s how we look at it, always get better; always keep improving.”

(On if they had a specific goal defensively to control the game)

“Defensive line-wise, we always go in thinking we are going to stop the run and take control up front to do our part to win the game. You can only control what you do and when you try to do too much that is when things go bad.”

(On his thoughts about the offensive struggles in the first half)

“There are definitely things we need to improve on. I can only speak for myself and I need to go back to my technique and fundamentals. We’ll watch the tape on the plane and see what we need to correct.”

(On being able to run the ball in the fourth quarter and get the win)

“It’s great. We were effective in the run game during the game and especially at the end. It’s something we are going to keep building on. It’s something we can’t give up on so we have to keep working and keep trying to improve.”

(On what was working well today)

“With us, it was just staying committed and trust in what we are being coached. Throughout the week we were coached to go outward and not upward and I think that carried over to the game. Pad level was emphasized and that is something we worked on that came through today.”

(On the seven-and-a-half-minute game-winning drive)

“That was tiring. You never really count the plays, but you’re kind of just looking around and just waiting for the next play, but it’s all about one play at a time. Definitely at the end though, that was a tiring one.”

Inter Miami win 2024 MLS Supporters’ Shield

Boasting arguably the most talented roster in MLS history, Inter Miami are led by Messi (17g/15a) and Luis Suárez (18g/6a). The iconic forwards are in the Landon Donovan MLS MVP hunt, providing leadership and world-class ability alongside fellow ex-FC Barcelona stars Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets.

Inter Miami are far more than veteran stars, though, with Martino juggling injuries, international call-ups and multiple competitions to maximize the roster assembled by chief soccer officer and sporting director Chris Henderson.

Inter Miami CF Wins 2024 Supporters’ Shield

For the first time in Club history, Inter Miami CF has won the Supporters’ Shield. The team clinched the best overall 2024 MLS regular season with a 2-3 win over the Columbus Crew today; a brace from captain Lionel Messi, a goal from striker Luis Suárez, and a penalty save by Drake Callender secured the historic result for the team. The trophy secures the top seed in the Eastern Conference and home-field advantage throughout the Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs for Inter Miami.

As the Supporters’ Shield winners, Inter Miami qualified to compete in the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup, marking the second-straight season the team will participate in the competition; the team reached the quarterfinals of the competition in 2024. Inter Miami can still secure a bye to the Round of 16 of the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup by winning the 2024 MLS Cup.

The team will host a home playoff game for the first first time in Club history when it faces the winner of the Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs Eastern Conference Wild Card match between the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds in the Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs Round One Best-of-3 Series. Inter Miami will host the first game of the series and the third, if necessary, at Chase Stadium, and the team’s opponent will host the second game of the series. The Round One Best-of-3 Series schedule will be finalized upon the release of the full Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs schedule.

Debuting in MLS in 2020, Inter Miami is now only the sixth active club to win Supporters’ Shield within its first five seasons in the league; it is also the 17th different club in the league’s 29 seasons to earn the Supporters’ Shield. Since expanding the regular season to 34 games in 2011, Miami is only the third team to win the Supporters’ Shield after missing the playoffs in the previous season, joining LAFC in 2022 and the San Jose Earthquakes in 2012.

Head Coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino has led Inter Miami CF to a record-breaking season in which the Club recorded historic stats. The impressive achievements include becoming the third-fastest club to earn a playoffs berth and dominating the league by recording the most wins, goals and points in Club history (with matches to spare).

In his second year at the helm, Martino has orchestrated a historic turnaround for the team, going from 27th in the Supporters’ Shield race in 2023 to first in 2024. He has led Inter Miami to a 20W-4L-8D record with a +25 goal differential with two regular season matches remaining. The Supporters’ Shield marks Martino’s ninth trophy as a manager in club soccer and fourth as an MLS head coach.

The team has also been guided by contributions from its varied group of players, including global superstars Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba; local Academy products Benjamin Cremaschi, David Ruiz, Ian Fray, and Noah Allen; MLS SuperDraft picks Yannick Bright and Leo Afonso; young up-and-comers from across the world like Diego Gómez, Federico Redondo, and Tomás Avilés; prime-aged veterans with winning experience like Julian Gressel and Matías Rojas; stalwart goalkeeper and team leader Drake Callender; and everything in between.

Notably, Messi has starred throughout the regular season, tallying a stellar 17 goals and a team-high 15 assists in just 17 matches. Suárez has also played a pivotal role for the side in his first season with the Club, leading the team in goals with 18 this regular season, and adding six assists. The duo produced several individual standout moments en route to the Supporters’ Shield as they became the first pair of teammates in MLS history to win MLS Player of the Matchday honors at least three times each in a single season.

With two regular season matches remaining, Inter Miami is chasing the MLS single-season points record. The team will need to win both of its remaining games to break the New England Revolution’s total of 73 points from 2021, concluding with a Decision Day matchup against New England:

  • Saturday, October 5 at Toronto FC (4 p.m. ET, MLS Season Pass on Apple TV)
  • Saturday, October 19 vs. New England Revolution (6 p.m. ET, MLS Season Pass on Apple TV)

Below is the list of all-time Supporters’ Shield winners, as sorted in reverse chronological order.
