Raiders-Steelers recap: Las Vegas throttled again in loss

Raiders-Steelers recap: Las Vegas throttled again in loss

New quarterback, same old result.

Indeed, the switch from Gardner Minshew to Aidan O’Connell had little impact.

The Las Vegas Raiders were once again a sloppy flat product on both offense and on defense and were easily beaten at home by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday by a score of 32-13.

Let’s take a look at the key aspects of the game:

Team records: The Las Vegas Raiders are 2-4. The Pittsburgh Steelers are 4-2.

What the win/loss means for the Raiders:

The Raiders, in last place in the AFC West, is dangerously close to falling into a deep hole in the grand playoff scheme. The Raiders are now 2-1 against AFC North opponents with a Week 9 game at the Cincinnati Bengals remaining. Remarkably, the Raiders have trailed by double digits in all six of their games this season. The Raiders have trailed by 20 or more points three of the past four games including twice at home. Not a great look for coach Antonio Pierce and a roster that pushed for him to get hired. Pierce is 7-8 as the Raiders’ coach.

Turning point of the game:

The Steelers turned a Raiders’ turnover into a touchdown to take a 12-7 lead at halftime. Then, the Raiders had a punt blocked deep in their own territory on the first series of the second half that the Steelers turned into three points. Pittsburgh simply took over from that point.

Injury report:

Guard Dylan Parham hurt his foot in the first half. Jordan Meredith replaced him. Wide receiver D.J. Turner was injured in the third quarter.

What’s next for the Raiders:

The Raiders play at the Los Angeles Rams next Sunday at 1:05 p.m. PT. The Rams are 1-4 and had their bye this week. The Raiders will likely have many fans at SoFi Stadium. They are 1-5 there with five straight losses. Their only win there came in 2020 when there weren’t any fans in the stands.

Jim Harbaugh misses part of Chargers’ win over Broncos for treatment of irregular heartbeat

Jim Harbaugh misses part of Chargers’ win over Broncos for treatment of irregular heartbeat

Jim Harbaugh listened to his heart when he began to feel a little bit off in pregame warmups.

The Los Angeles Chargers coach went into the medical tent and then to the locker room in the first quarter Sunday to get checked out for an irregular heartbeat. An EKG showed his heart was back in normal rhythm and he returned to the sideline with his team already up 3-0.

His team didn’t miss a beat in a 23-16 win over the Denver Broncos. In fact, his quarterback, Justin Herbert, didn’t even know he wasn’t on the sideline. His brother sure did, as Baltimore coach John Harbaugh cut short his postgame news conference after a win over Washington to check in on his brother.

“Everything ended up turning out to be OK,” said Jim Harbaugh, who received IV fluids. “The doctors checked me out, and it got back into normal rhythm. So came back.

“It’s the heart so you take it seriously.”

For quite a while, Harbaugh said he’s dealt with atrial flutter, a condition that can cause the heart to beat too quickly. He had an ablation procedure in 1999 to treat the irregular heart rhythms. He also had another one in 2012 when he was coaching the San Francisco 49ers. He vividly remembers that procedure because it was after a Monday night game where Colin Kaepernick led the 49ers to a 32-7 win over the Chicago Bears.

Harbaugh said he hadn’t really experienced another episode until this weekend.

“I started feeling it last night, but wasn’t really sure,” Harbaugh said. “Just like in 2012, it was during the pregame warmups — I kind of started feeling.”

Harbaugh tried to interject some humor — “2-0 in arrhythmias,” he cracked.

Herbert was caught off guard by the news that his coach had left the sideline — or that anything was amiss. Although, he said Harbaugh mentioned something about his health Saturday night.

“He said he was really excited for the game. He said his blood was flowing and he was excited,” said Herbert, who completed 21 of 34 passes for 237 yards and one touchdown. “I thought everything was good to go. That’s definitely something he should get checked out. He’s a tough guy, though.”

Harbaugh said that when he was in the locker room, the medical staff took his pulse and conducted an EKG.

“Trust the doctors. If you’re not going to trust your doctors, who are you gonna trust?” he said. “Came back in to the locker room, and the paramedics came, got an EKG and said it was back to the sinus (normal) rhythm, and I said, ‘I feel good.’ I went back out there on the field.”

Harbaugh plans to follow up with his cardiologist on Monday.

When he left the sideline as the game started, the Chargers described his absence as an illness. Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter took over until Harbaugh returned midway through the first quarter with the Chargers ahead 3-0 and driving toward another score. The Chargers jumped out to a 23-0 lead in the second half before the Broncos made a late surge.

“It was a great and glorious win for the team,” Harbaugh said. “Really proud of our team, pleased. They’re playing good football, offense, defense and special teams, four quarters of it.

“I felt great about that.”

Patriots lose Drake Maye’s first start, 41-21, to Houston Texans

Patriots lose Drake Maye’s first start, 41-21, to Houston Texans

FOXBORO — Drake Maye made his first career start, but the results were the same for the New England Patriots in their Week 6 clash with the Houston Texans. The Patriots lost their fifth straight game, 41-21, to fall to 1-5 on the season.

Despite the loss, there were a lot of signs of hope for the future as Maye threw three touchdown passes (giving him the team-lead for the season) and the Patriots scored more points on Sunday than they had in any of their previous five games. With Maye now starting, the Patriots are at least building toward something with their young QB.

But the Texans were too much for New England to handle on Sunday. Houston found the end zone on each of their first two possessions, and then turned three second-half turnovers by the Patriots into 17 points. Houston quarterback C.J. Stroud threw three touchdown passes of his own on 20-for-31 passing while running back Joe Mixon rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown in his return.

New England turned the ball over four times overall: Two interceptions and a fumble by Maye and a fumble by tight end Austin Hooper. The Patriots’ run game was also non-existent without Rhamondre Stevenson, as New England averaged just 3.2 yards on 26 carries for just 82 rushing yards.

“Drake made some good decisions out there. I thought he had some good reads, I thought he tried to get the ball out of his hands, I thought he did a good job extending plays with his legs to get first downs. We just gotta be better,” New England head coach Jerod Mayo said after the loss. “We let him down. I feel like I let him down.”

Drake Maye makes first career start for Patriots

Drake Maye did a bit of everything in his debut. He threw a lovely touchdown. He threw a bad pick. He scrambled for some yards and he fumbled. He even recorded his first career tackle.

Maye was up and down in his first career start, which is expected from a 22-year-old rookie. The Patriots had a quick three-and-out on their first possession and Maye threw a bad interception to end New England’s second possession. However, the Texans didn’t turn that gift of a possession into any points.

Maye threw a lovely deep ball to Kayshon Boutte just before halftime, connecting with the receiver down the right sideline for a 40-yard touchdown strike to cut the Houston lead to 14-7.

The Patriots had momentum on their side as the second half got underway, but that vanished when Maye was strip-sacked by Danielle Hunter and Houston recovered at the New England 10-yard line. The Texans turned that fumble into a quick touchdown when Stroud hit Stefon Diggs in the end zone to give Houston a 21-7 lead.

Maye led the Patriots on another touchdown drive late in the third quarter, throwing for 64 yards and capping off the drive with a six-yard touchdown to Hunter Henry to make it a 27-14 game.

He had another solid drive early in the fourth quarter. Maye scrambled for 15 yards on a second-and-5, and then hit DeMario Douglas over the middle on a third-and-5, which the speedy receiver turned into a 35-yard touchdown for New England to make it a 34-21 game with 9:24 left. But the Texans answered with a four-play touchdown drive, capped off by a 54-yard touchdown run by Dameon Pierce to put the game out of reach.

The Pats didn’t win, but the offense looked functional for the majority of the game. The deep threat is back with Maye at quarterback, and he also made the Texans pay a few times with his legs.

Overall, Maye was 20-for-33 for 243 yards, three touchdowns, a pair of interceptions, and a lost fumble. He also ran for 38 yards on five carries to finish as New England’s leading rusher.

Turnovers crushed New England’s chances in Week 6

The Patriots turned the ball over four times on Sunday, leading to 17 points for the Texans. Houston could have had more too but Ka’imi Fairbairn missed a 40-yard field goal attempt after Maye’s first pick.

Maye’s fumble turned into a Houston touchdown out of the break, and the Pats fumbled away their third possession of the second half as well. Maye felt the pressure on first down and threw a short pass to Hooper, but Houston linebacker Henry To’oTo’o knocked the ball out of the tight end’s hands and Bullock recovered at the New England 31. Houston turned that into a field goal.

The Texans got another turnover when they deflected a short attempt by Maye to Antonio Gibson, and it went right into the hands of Anderson at the New England 26. Joe Mixon broke off a 20-yard touchdown run two plays later to give the Texans a 34-14 lead.

The Texans had a minus-three turnover differential heading into Week 6, but were plus-three in that department on Sunday.

Patriots will face Jaguars in London in Week 7

Up next for the Patriots is a trip across the pond for a matchup against the 1-5 Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley Stadium in London. The Jags are already overseas, having lost to the Chicago Bears, 35-16, on Sunday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams threw four touchdown passes against the Jacksonville defense in Week 6, while Trevor Lawrence was sacked three times and picked off once for the Jaguars. Chicago running backs ran for 152 yards and averaged 5.2 yards per carry against Jacksonville on Sunday.

Falcons vs. Panthers prediction, odds, line, start time: 2024 NFL picks, Week 6 best bets from proven model

Falcons vs. Panthers prediction, odds, line, start time: 2024 NFL picks, Week 6 best bets from proven model

The Carolina Panthers look to match their win total from 2023 as they host the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday afternoon. Carolina (1-4) fell in Chicago last week, 36-10, while Atlanta (3-2) staged a dramatic comeback to beat Tampa Bay in overtime, 36-30. The Panthers have won two of the last three meetings, including a 9-7 low-scoring affair last December. Atlanta is 2-3 against the spread, while Carolina is 1-4 ATS in 2024.

Kickoff from Bank of America Stadium is set for 4:25 p.m. ET. Atlanta is a 6-point favorite in the latest Falcons vs. Panthers odds via SportsLine consensus, while the over/under for total points is 46. Before making any Panthers vs. Falcons picks, you need to see the NFL predictions and betting advice from the proven computer model at SportsLine.

The model, which simulates every NFL game 10,000 times, is up well over $7,000 for $100 players on top-rated NFL picks since its inception. The model enters Week 6 of the 2024 NFL season on an incredible 10-2 hot streak on top-rated NFL picks this year. Longer term, it is on a 191-131 roll on top-rated NFL picks that dates back to the 2017 season and a 45-23 roll on top-rated NFL picks since Week 7 of 2022.

The model also ranked in the top 10 on NFLPickWatch four of the past six years on straight-up NFL picks and beat more than 94% of CBS Sports Football Pick’em players four times during that span. Anyone who has followed it is way up.

Now, the model has set its sights on Falcons vs. Panthers and just locked in its picks and NFL Week 6 predictions. You can head to SportsLine now to see the model’s picks. Here are several NFL odds and betting lines for spread, money line and over/under:

  • Falcons vs. Panthers spread: Falcons -6

Why the Falcons can cover

The Falcons continue to find ways to win close games, with victories of one, two, and six points this season. Their offense continues to play at a high level, as evidenced by last week’s win over Tampa Bay. Quarterback Kirk Cousins completed 42 passes for a career-high 509 yards and four touchdowns in the team’s win over the Buccaneers last Thursday. Wide receiver Drake London has been nearly impossible to guard of late, catching 12 passes for 154 yards and a score in the Week 5 thrilling victory. Fellow WR Darnell Mooney caught nine passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns and has been a solid complement to London this season.

If Atlanta is going to make a legitimate run at the division title, they need improved play from running back Bijan Robinson. The second year pro hasn’t lived up to his potential in 2024, rushing for only 285 yards and generating 151 yards through the air, while finding the end zone only one time. Against a Panthers defense surrendering the fifth most total yards to their opponents (371.2), this would be a prime spot for Robinson to explode for a big performance. See which team to pick here.

Why the Panthers can cover

Though Carolina had been more competitive in veteran quarterback Andy Dalton’s first two starts, the Panthers bottomed out last week in Chicago, with the veteran only throwing for 136 yards and an interception. The Panthers could go back to last year’s No. 1 overall pick, Bryce Young, as the team falls further out of playoff contention, so Dalton has a limited time to turn around the team’s fate. Wide receiver Diontae Johnson caught a combined 15 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns in Dalton’s first two starts and should look to find success against a beatable Atlanta secondary.

The Panthers’ best player on offense this season has been running back Chuba Hubbard, who has 97 or more yards rushing in each of his last three games. Since Week 1, Hubbard is averaging 115 all purpose yards per game and has scored three times. Even with running back Jonathon Brooks (ACL) set to be activated in the near future, Hubbard will be tough to remove from the starting role considering his success thus far in 2024. See which team to pick here.

How to make Falcons vs. Panthers picks

Saints rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler will make first NFL start Sunday against Tampa Bay

Saints rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler will make first NFL start Sunday against Tampa Bay

While Allen said that Carr will return to the starting lineup upon his return and didn’t rule out Haener starting at some point, he said Rattler needn’t concern himself with having a short leash Sunday.

“I think you’ve got to let the guy go in there and play,” Allen said. “We’re not going into this game saying, ‘You make a mistake and we’re going to pull you.’ He’s going in to play. He’s going to start, he’s going to lead the team, and we go from there.

“You don’t want to go into this thing like it’s this major ordeal. He’s the next man up, get an opportunity to go in and play. Go play and have fun, do what you’ve been trained to do.

“I think sometimes you can make too big a deal of it and create more of an issue than you really need to. We’ll go through the things that he needs to know, we’ll get him prepared and then we’ll let him go out there and play.”

Though Rattler had been the emergency quarterback for five games, Allen said Rattler had impressed in practice.

“He goes against us on the ‘show” team every day and he’s got athletic ability, he can throw the ball, he’s accurate, he creates some plays on the scout team,” Allen said. “I just think this is a guy who has a lot of ability and certainly he’s a rookie, so we know that we’re going to have some challenges that go along with that, but I think we’ll have a good plan for him and we’ll be excited about going out and playing.

“He’s done a good job for us on the show team. He’s made some really good plays against our defense. He’s made some awkward throws and his mobility has been good.

“It’s going to be incumbent on us as coaches to put him in the best position to be successful.”

The Saints lost safety Will Harris to a hamstring injury in the first half and center Lucas Patrick, playing in place of starter Erik McCoy, left in the second half with a collarbone injury but returned.

Browns vs. Commanders Livestream: How to Watch NFL Week 5 Online Today

Carries Fox in DC (WTTG)

Sling TV Blue: $45 (in some markets $40)

There’s very little reason to watch the Cleveland Browns this season. They’ve failed to score 20 points in any of their four games, three of which have been losses. They also employ the one of the least effective quarterbacks in the league who, it must be noted, has yet again been accused of sexual assault and somehow is still starting NFL games.

Things are much rosier for the Commanders, who have won three straight behind the stellar play of Jayden Daniels. The rookie quarterback has burst onto the NFL scene by completing more than 80% of his passes while throwing for three touchdowns and rushing for four more over the first month of his pro career.

The Browns and Commanders are set to kick off in Maryland at 1 p.m. ET (10 a.m. PT) on Fox. Here’s how you can watch, even if the game isn’t available on your local Fox channel.

Browns vs. Commanders game today: When and where?

This matchup sees the Commanders host the Browns at 1 p.m. ET (10 a.m. PT) on Sunday. The game will take place at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, home of the Commanders.

How to watch the Browns vs. Commanders game online from anywhere using a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view the game locally due to incorrectly applied blackout restrictions, you may need a different way to watch the game and that’s where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds on game day by encrypting your traffic, plus it’s a great idea for when you’re traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you’re able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the game. So if your internet provider or mobile carrier has stuck you with an IP address that incorrectly shows your location in a blackout zone, a VPN can correct that problem by giving you an IP address in your correct, nonblackout area. Most VPNs, like our Editors’ Choice, ExpressVPN, make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US and Canada, as long as you’ve got a legitimate subscription to the service you’re streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

ExpressVPN is our current best VPN pick for people who want a reliable and safe VPN, and it works on a variety of devices. It’s normally $13 a month, but if you sign up for an annual subscription for $100 you’ll get three months free and save 49%. How to watch Browns vs. Commanders in the US

Sunday’s Browns vs. Commanders game is on Fox nationally. The good news for football fans is that Fox is available on most of the major live TV streaming services. The least expensive such service is Sling TV Blue.

Sling/CNET

Sling TV’s Blue plan includes NBC, Fox and the NFL Network, though it does not have CBS, ABC or ESPN. Enter your address here to see which local channels are available where you live. NFL RedZone is also available for an extra $11 a month.

Note that to get ABC and ESPN, you’ll need to switch to the similarly priced Orange plan (which drops Fox, NBC and NFL Network) or go for the combined $60 a month Orange and Blue bundle that includes channels from both packages. With the combined plan, the Sports Extra add-on, which has RedZone, is an extra $15 a month.

One important caveat: In our experience, Fox local affiliates will only be available if your billing address is in one of the 18 metropolitan areas covered in Sling’s agreement. If you’re outside of one of these areas, you’re probably better off going with one of the alternate services listed below.

Numerous other live TV streaming services carry local Fox stations as well, namely YouTube TV, Hulu Plus Live TV, DirecTV Stream and Fubo. They all cost far more than Sling, but they also carry a full complement of live channels, including football broadcasting channels like CBS and ESPN. Check out our live TV streaming services guide for details.

Sarah Tew/CNET

For $73 a month, you’ll get all the major football channels with YouTube TV. Plus, RedZone is available for an extra $11 per month. Plug in your ZIP code on YouTube TV’s welcome page to see which local networks are available in your area.

Fubo

Fubo costs at least $92 per month when you factor in the RSN fees it charges, which you don’t need for NFL games but must pay for anyway. Fubo’s base plan costs $80 but it charges an extra $12 a month if you get one RSN or $15 a month if you have two or more in your area. RedZone is available for an extra $11 per month, and you can get 4K broadcasts with its $90-a-month Elite plan. It’s worth noting that Fubo has recently introduced a new $30 off for the first month offer for its Pro, Elite With Sports Plus and Deluxe plans. Click here to see which local channels you get in your region with Fubo. Read our Fubo review.

An over-the-air antenna connected to your TV provides another option for Fox. The best part about antennas is that there are no streaming or monthly fees required, although you will need to make sure you have good reception.

Quick tips for streaming the Browns vs. Commanders game using a VPN

  • With four variables at play — your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN — experience and success may vary.
  • If you don’t see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the “search for city or country” option.
  • If you’re having trouble getting the game after you’ve turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs — like Roku — don’t have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you’ll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you’re using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
  • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network’s sports app, you’ll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
  • And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you’re using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend Brave.
