GREEN BAY, Wisc. – The Colts were able to withstand an early ground onslaught but were unable to mount enough offensive momentum on Sunday, losing 16-10 to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.
The Colts went into halftime down just 10-0 despite a first half in which Green Bay – which was without starting quarterback Jordan Love due to a knee injury – held a significant advantage in total yards (262-80) and time of possession (23:05 to 6:55). Running back Josh Jacobs accounted for most of that damage, with the veteran running back churning out 128 yards on 20 carries (6.4 yards/attempt) in the first half.
The Packers had over 100 rushing yards a little over nine minutes into the first quarter, and in the first 15 minutes Green Bay rushed for 164 yards on 20 carries. Those 164 rushing yards were the most any team has had in the first quarter of a game since the Denver Broncos had 167 rushing yards in the first quarter of a game in 2011.
Green Bay was consistently able to stay ahead of the chains on first down with their first-half run game. The Packers totaled 16 carries for 137 yards on first down in the first half, with Jacobs carrying 10 times for 72 yards on those plays. Wide receiver Jayden Reed gained 37 yards on two first down rushes as well.
The biggest play of the first half for the Colts came when linebacker Zaire Franklin knocked the ball out of Jacobs’ hands just before the goal line, with defensive end Laiatu Latu recovering the fumble in the end zone. The forced fumble and recovery kept Green Bay’s lead from ballooning to three scores in the first half.
GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Green Bay Packers use a dominant ground game, excellent game management from backup QB Malik Willis and 3 interceptions from the defense.
It adds up to a 16-10 win over the Indianapolis Colts Sunday at Lambeau Field.
The chants of ‘Go Pack Go,’ are once again bellowing from fans at Lambeau Field after the team’s first win of the season.
Before the game, fans were keeping an open mind about quarterback Malik Willis, filling in for the injured Jordan Love.
“This game, I’m not sure, but the next couple games, probably, he could be better every game just because of the system he’s in, but you never know. It’s week two in the NFL, anything can happen,” said Packers fan Kelley Logan, from Louisville, Kentucky.
“I feel confident. I trust everyone, I trust LaFleur, trust the team, I’m excited, vibes are great. I’m feeling good,” said fan Jack Messenger.
By the time the clock hit zero — backers of the Packers gave Willis a passing grade.
“You know, it’s growing pains, and I think he passed the first test today. And I think he’s only going to get stronger from here on out. Gained some confidence,” said Dave Glasgow.
More than 77,000 were in attendance Sunday — a day that was unusually hot for regular season football.
That heat had people rushing to stay hydrated, which proved to be difficult, as some fans say concession stands began to run low on cold water after the first quarter.
“We walk into the level, and they’re like ‘hey, can we get water.’ And we walked around and there was nothing like available. On the, yeah the whole 300 level,” said Tanner Beckman.
The Packers say concessions were eventually replenished.
With eight more games remaining at home for the Packers in the regular season — fans are looking forward to making more memories.
“No matter where you’re from or what team you support, when you’re here in Green Bay, you’re just, we’re all here for the same purpose, to have fun. And, it’s a great environment, it’s contagious,” said Scott Champion.
Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love was helped off the field Friday after suffering an apparent lower leg injury with six seconds remaining in his team’s 34-29 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in São Paulo, Brazil.
Love, attempting to pass to a teammate as the clock was ticking down, was hit by two Eagles defensive players and brought to the ground. He stayed on the field writhing in pain before team doctors examined him. Love was helped to the sideline and did not re-enter the game.
Green Bay backup quarterback Malik Willis — who joined the team at the end of August — replaced Love for the final two plays. He threw an incomplete pass and was sacked to end the game.
Love was 17-for-34 passing for 260 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in the loss.
Asked about the severity of Love’s injury after the game, Packers coach Matt LaFleur said, “I don’t know.”
Wide receiver Christian Watson tried to sound optimistic by saying, “Whatever it is, I know he’s going to get through it. We’re going to get through it.”
Love signed a four-year, $220 million contract in July to remain with the Packers through the 2028 season. The deal included a record $75 million signing bonus and $155 million in new full guarantees, according to ESPN.
Love, who played sparingly his first two seasons in Green Bay, thrived in his first full season as a starter last year.
The 25-year-old started all 17 games last season, throwing for 4,159 yards with 32 touchdowns, 11 interceptions and a 96.1 passer rating. He went 6-2 with 18 touchdowns and only one interception over the final eight games, leading the Packers to the postseason.
SAO PAULO, BR (WSAU) – As the Packers travel back to Green Bay following their 34-29 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday night, the status of star quarterback Jordan Love remains unknown after getting injured from a low tackle during the team’s attempt to put together a game-winning drive.
When head coach Matt LaFleur was asked by Larry McCarren of the Packers Radio Network about the injury during his post-game interview, he said it’s too early to know how severe it is. “I don’t know. We’re waiting. Obviously very concerned about it. We’ll wait to find out when we do more tests.”
Running back Josh Jacobs had a similar response, saying, “We don’t know the severity of his injury, but hopefully he’s OK.”
According to The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman, Love was seen leaving the locker room following the game under his power with a slight limp but wasn’t using crutches or a walking boot.
LaFleur also weighed in on the team’s penalty calls that derailed a few drives, calling the game a “slop fest” and saying, “There’s a lot to clean up. Definitely a sloppy game from us. There were some uncharacteristic things that we did as a staff, quite frankly, and that trickled down to our players. Ultimately, we all got to look hard at ourselves in the mirror and find ways to get better because tonight wasn’t good enough.”
The Packers’ loss was highlighted by the team managing to score just nine points on three turnovers on Friday night and scoring just one touchdown in the red zone on four attempts while committing 10 total penalties for 71 yards.
Only one National Football League team has an ownership structure that resembles a publicly traded company.
The Green Bay Packers, who are the 12th most-valuable NFL franchise at $6.3 billion, according to CNBC’s Official 2024 NFL Team Valuations, are the only publicly owned team across the four major North American professional sports leagues. The franchise is completely owned by stockholders, many of them Packers fans, in a structure established more than 100 years ago.
The Packers have had six stock offerings — which kicked off in 1923, 1935, 1950, 1997, 2011, 2021 — resulting in more than 5.2 million outstanding shares owned by more than 538,000 people, according to the team’s 2024 media guide.
The shares pay no dividend, are nontransferable outside of passing to a child or relative and do not have any intrinsic market value. Shareholders get to attend the team’s annual meeting and vote for a board of directors, but the team says owners do not make any financial gains from ownership. The only way a shareholder receives any money is by selling their stake back to the team, and even that is for a percentage of the original share price.
For 2023, the team took in $638 million in revenue, and its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization were $128 million. The Packers are a nonprofit, and the only member of the team’s seven-person executive committee who gets compensation is the president.
The Packers’ annual revenue goes toward paying players, maintaining Lambeau Field and marketing, among other expenses. The share offerings throughout the years have been used to pull the team out of rocky financial situations and do larger renovations of Lambeau Field.
The unique structure puts the Packers among the teams that newly approved private equity investors will be least interested in. Even deep-pocketed investors cannot use their funds to generate a return.
There is a 200,000 share per person ownership cap — less than 4% of the team’s outstanding shares. Current rules allow approved private equity firms to own up to 10% of a franchise, but even if the Packers wanted a firm to own that much of the team, it is unlikely to entice private equity investors.
Since the stock offerings are so infrequent, the biggest barrier to Packers fans owning a piece of the team is not money — it’s timing.
In the first offering in 1923, one share cost $5. Even though the price has increased throughout the years to as high as $300 for an offering that started in 2021, it is still a tiny fraction of the $6.49 billion average valuation of an NFL team today.
The unique ownership structure is one of several ways the Packers stand as an outlier in the NFL. Green Bay is the smallest television market of any of the 32 teams, and it does not have the high level of tourism that other cities with NFL teams such as Las Vegas, Miami, New York and Los Angeles receive.
It also often draws the ire of other fans and organizations because of its long-term stability at quarterback as the team transitioned from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers to Jordan Love.
The Packers kick off their season Friday against the Philadelphia Eagles led by Love, who recently signed a four-year, $220 million extension with the organization.
There isn’t enough room to list all of the storylines for the 2024 regular-season opener, but let’s give it a try.
The Eagles are making history in Brazil, the NFL’s first game in South America, and beyond all the hype and the Friday night lights and all of the pomp and circumstance, there is a football game to win. And the opponent, the Green Bay Packers, is a legitimate Super Bowl-contending team with a rising star in Jordan Love at quarterback and a plethora of weapons as his supporting cast.
Game 1 is a banger, as the kids say.
The teams are settled in, they’ve gotten accustomed to the surroundings at Arena Corinthians, and they will be ready to go for the unusual kickoff time (Friday, 9:15 PM Brazil time/8:15 in Philadelphia). And with that, some storylines for you to digest …
Will the Eagles’ offense hit the ground running (or passing)?
The Eagles didn’t play their starting offense in the preseason games, feeling like that group had plenty of quality reps in practice against the Eagles’ defense and in the joint practice with New England. So, there is a lot of “unknown” here with Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moore providing the first real glimpse of what this offense is going to be about. The idea is to be a multi-faceted, attack-weaknesses, win-in-a-lot-of-different ways offense and the Eagles certainly appear to have the depth of talent across the offensive board to play that way. It is going to be really, really interesting to see how it all works out in the opener. Head Coach Nick Sirianni is 3-0 in openers, and the offense performed well in all three of those games. This game won’t answer every question, of course, but it will provide some concrete evidence of what Moore’s approach will be this season.
What does Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio have in store for Green Bay QB Jordan Love?
Green Bay is loaded on offense. Jordan Love is a rising star at quarterback, his receiving corps – led by Christian Watson – is outstanding, and free agent-signee Josh Jacobs is a versatile, game-breaking running back. The Packers have a good offensive line, a sound scheme, and they should have one of the top offenses in the NFL this season.
What does Fangio do to counter the Packers’ power?
Again, we just don’t know.
The defense played well in the preseason, and the starters saw enough action together for Fangio to have a taste of what he has. But a lot of this in the early season is Fangio learning what his players can and cannot do, so expect him to continue to move players on and off the field. Fangio has said he will blitz when the time is right and he will not when the time isn’t right. He doesn’t want to “need” to blitz, which means the Eagles have to do a sound job on first and second down and then get after it on third down with a four- and five-man pass rush.
This is going to be truly fascinating: A great offense against a rebuilt defense headed by one of the great defensive minds in the history of the NFL.
Is the NFL’s new kickoff rule going to alter the course of the game?
What did we learn last night from the Baltimore at Kansas City game? Kansas City played keep-away, allowing the Ravens to start at the 30-yard line after each of the six touchbacks. The Chiefs returned two of Baltimore’s offerings, but neither went beyond the 31-yard line. That could be a preview of what’s to come, but, honestly, it is hard to make any statements about what is going to happen. As Eagles Special Teams Coordinator Michael Clay said this week, it is truly “unchartered waters.” And that’s the truth.
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The Green Bay Packers’ kicking competition is going down to the wire.
Greg Joseph improved his chances of unseating incumbent Anders Carlson by making a 55-yard field goal and a 36-yarder Saturday and the Packers beat the Baltimore Ravens 30-7 in a preseason finale without most of the starters from either team.
Carlson made a 54-yarder in the first quarter but pushed a 32-yarder wide right in the final period.
“We’ll wait and see,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said about the kicking competition after the game.
After Carlson struggled as a rookie last season, the Packers brought in Joseph to compete with him. Joseph has played for the Cleveland Browns (2018), Tennessee Titans (2019) and Minnesota Vikings (2021-23).
“I’ve controlled what I can control,” Joseph said. “Anything further, it’s no point in losing sleep over because it’s out of my control.”
Both teams rested their top players to make sure they stayed as healthy as possible for the start of the regular season. The Ravens still got some bad luck with running back Owen Wright breaking his foot and center Nick Samac also getting carted off the field.
Samac, a rookie seventh-round pick from Michigan State, had been getting some first-team reps in camp while 2023 Pro Bowler Tyler Linderbaum deals with a neck issue.
Ravens coach John Harbaugh expressed confidence after the game that Linderbaum and tight end Mark Andrews, who got hurt in a car accident last week, will be ready for the start of the regular season.
With most starters staying on the sidelines, this final exhibition game was a showcase for players attempting to win jobs. NFL teams are required to cut their rosters to 53 players by Tuesday.
Green Bay’s Arron Mosby made a case for himself by getting a strip-sack that resulted in a touchdown and intercepting a pass on consecutive series. Kristian Welch intercepted a pass for a second straight week. Ellis Merriweather, Nate McCrary and Emanuel Wilson combined for 190 yards rushing.
The Packers could need one of those running backs to contribute early on behind Josh Jacobs because AJ Dillon is dealing with a stinger and rookie third-round pick MarShawn Lloyd has a hamstring injury, leaving their status uncertain for the start of the season.
In the competition to back up Green Bay starting quarterback Jordan Love, Sean Clifford went 6 of 14 for 53 yards with a touchdown to Malik Heath. Rookie seventh-round pick Michael Pratt was 8 of 12 for 80 yards with a touchdown to Bo Melton and a pass that Baltimore’s Trenton Simpson intercepted.
“I think it’s similar to the kicking competition in terms of there were some really good moments and then there were some things we absolutely have to do better, and then we’ll evaluate everything that’s out there for us,” LaFleur said.
With reigning MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson resting, Baltimore’s Josh Johnson was 5 of 7 for 71 yards with a 48-yard touchdown completion to Tylan Wallace. Rookie sixth-round selection Devin Leary went 6 of 13 for 34 yards with two interceptions and a fumble.
Baltimore did play some potential starters on an offensive line that has undergone plenty of upheaval, with Andrew Vorhees at left guard, Daniel Faalele at right guard and Roger Rosengarten at right tackle. The Ravens lost guards Kevin Zeitler to the Detroit Lions and John Simpson to the New York Jets in free agency, and they traded right tackle Morgan Moses to the Jets.
The Ravens also started rookie cornerback Nate Wiggins, a first-round pick who had hurt his shoulder in Baltimore’s preseason opener and didn’t play against the Atlanta Falcons last week.
“He’s had a heck of a camp,” Harbaugh said. “He’s definitely everything we thought he was. Not that he can’t get better, because he can and I’m sure he will, because he works at it. He’s going to be counted on heavily this year for us.”
But the biggest plays were delivered by guys battling for those final roster spots.
Mosby, whose only three games of NFL experience came with Carolina in 2022, made the biggest play when he sacked Leary and knocked the ball backward. Anthony Johnson Jr. recovered the fumble at the Baltimore 24 — 28 yards behind the line of scrimmage — and raced into the end zone.
On Baltimore’s next series, Mosby intercepted Leary’s pass.
Now he waits to see if he did enough to make the team.
“You never know how these 72 hours go,” Mosby said. “If it’s here or somewhere else, you’ve always got to be ready.”
UP NEXT
Ravens: Open the regular season Sept. 5 with a Thursday night game at Kansas City.
Packers: Begin the regular season Sept. 6 with a Friday game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Sao Paulo, Brazil.
DENVER – Two days after practicing with the Broncos in Denver, the Packers will play their second preseason game of 2024 against them Sunday night.
Here’s what to watch for.
Reserve QBs take center stage: With the starting units getting the bulk of the work in the joint practice, they’re not expected to play in the game. That means Sean Clifford will start at QB for the Packers, with Michael Pratt following shortly behind.
Head Coach Matt LaFleur didn’t fully divulge the plan for how the QB snaps would be divvied up, but Pratt was given some reps with the second-team offense in practice this past week and might get that opportunity again during the game. It remains to be seen whether Clifford and Pratt are not just competing to be Jordan Love’s top backup, but also competing for just one spot on the roster. It’s possible. Or the Packers might keep three quarterbacks. Either way, their game performances matter greatly.
Who can shine again?: When it comes to young players making a splash in the preseason, the question always lingering is whether a strong performance was a one-off, or can it be repeated?
Running back Emanuel Wilson has shined multiple times in the preseason now, and he could be in for a lot of work with running backs MarShawn Lloyd and Jarveon Howard both injured.
Receiver Grant DuBose was a big star last week in Cleveland with five catches for 66 yards and will look to do it again. Same with rookie safety Evan Williams, who had a half dozen tackles and a forced fumble in just 23 snaps vs. the Browns. Both of those players have carried over strong work on the practice field into the games, and will look to keep it up.
On the offensive line, Sean Rhyan and rookie Jacob Monk both had solid games a week ago and hope to continue their positive momentum. Both linemen have been working at guard and center with various units.
On the bounce-back side of things, receiver Bo Melton had a couple of dropped passes in Cleveland and will push to get back on track in that heated competition at his position.
Linebacker shuffle: Second-round rookie Edgerrin Cooper has yet to return from a hip injury, and Quay Walker likely won’t play. Whether veterans Isaiah McDuffie and/or Eric Wilson would play isn’t clear.
Third-round rookie Ty’Ron Hoppermissed some time with an ankle injury but was back in 11-on-11 work in the joint practice in Denver. If he gets cleared to play, this could be a huge opportunity for him.
Same for special-teams standout Kristian Welch, who could get a lot of snaps at linebacker as he aims to lock down a roster spot. Or maybe an undrafted rookie like Ralen Goforth, who has taken some reps further up the depth chart with all the injury shuffling going on, makes his bid with a long look.
Week 2 of the 2024 NFL preseason is here, including an exciting matchup between the Green Bay Packers and the Denver Broncos. Packers fans are expected to get a glimpse of quarterback Sean Clifford and rookie Michael Pratt in action.
