Broncos to wear Sunset Orange jerseys, white pants vs. Panthers

DENVER — The Broncos are set to wear their Sunset Orange jerseys for a home matchup with the Carolina Panthers in Week 8.

Denver will pair the jerseys with white pants and orange socks. The Broncos will wear their navy metallic satin helmets with the orange-and-white uniform combination.

This will mark the second time this season that the Broncos will pair their Sunset Orange jerseys with white pants, but the team will debut its orange socks. Denver previously wore this uniform combination with white socks during the team’s Week 3 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Denver previously announced its uniform schedule, and the Broncos will wear their Sunset Orange jerseys again in Week 11 before wearing their Midnight Navy alternate jerseys with white helmets for their ensuing home matchup in Week 13.

Denver will announce the corresponding pant color ahead of each game.

The Broncos kick off against the Panthers at 2:25 p.m. MT on Sunday.

Commanders 40-7 Panthers (Oct 20, 2024) Game Recap

Commanders 40-7 Panthers (Oct 20, 2024) Game Recap

LANDOVER, Md. — — Jayden Daniels’ health was the first thing on Marcus Mariota’s mind when he went into the game for the injured rookie quarterback. Then he just played football like he has his whole life.

After Daniels left with a rib injury, the Washington Commanders routed the Carolina Panthers 40-7 on Sunday behind two touchdown passes from Mariota and a 67-yard pick-6 of Andy Dalton by Dante Fowler.

“It takes a little bit to kind of get your feet going and all that, but, yeah, you’re just thinking about the player first and then from there you just go out there and try to to execute,” said Mariota, who was 18 of 23 for 205 yards with TD passes to tight ends Zach Ertz and Ben Sinnott.

Concern over Daniels’ status overshadowed the victory after the No. 2 pick and offensive rookie of the year favorite left with a rib injury. His mother posted on social media that “he’s fine,” but coach Dan Quinn said only that he had no update and that Daniels would undergo further tests Monday.

The Commanders (5-2) did just fine without Daniels for a vast majority of the game after he had a 46-yard run and completed a couple of passes on their opening possession. They already led at that point thanks to Fowler’s pick-6, Andy Dalton’s first of two interceptions, the second by Emmanuel Forbes, who returned from being a healthy scratch last week.

After after catching his first interception of any kind in the NFL, Fowler saw open field and thought, “It’s time to go score a touchdown.”

“Man, it was like I was in a dream,” Fowler said.

The defense dominated, allowing 180 yards, stopping seven of 10 third-down chances and sacking Dalton twice.

With Mariota running the show, Washington chugged along and racked up 421 yards against the Panthers (1-6), who allowed the most points through of any team in the Super Bowl era through the first six games of a season.

“Between giving the ball way and just not being able to get off the field, I think they scored on all but one drive,” said Carolina coach Dave Canales, who committed to Dalton starting next week over 2023 No. 1 pick Bryce Young.

Brian Robinson Jr. also ran for a touchdown in his return from a knee injury, which caused him to miss the game last week at Baltimore — his team’s first loss since the opener. The 27-point halftime lead was the franchise’s biggest since being up 28-0 on Dallas on Dec. 18, 2005.

Carolina’s lost season continued five games into Dalton supplanting Young as the starting QB. Dalton finished 11 of 16 for 93 yards, and Young entered in mop-up duty with 4:55 left, completing two passes for negative yardage.

“It got out of our hands quick,” Dalton said. “We have to look ourselves in the mirror and say, ‘Why do these games keep going like this?’ I think that’s the biggest thing.”

Chuba Hubbard was limited to 52 yards on 17 carries after averaging averaging over 100 over the past four weeks. He ran for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter long after the outcome was decided and fans who were doing the wave earlier long departed to beat the traffic.

“At the end of the day, we won handily and I think the defense did an unbelievable job,” said Terry McLaurin, Washington’s leading receiver with six catches for 98 yards.

Injuries

Panthers: RB Raheem Blackshear left with a shoulder injury from a kickoff return midway through the third quarter. … TE Tommy Tremble (back) was inactive after being listed as questionable.

Commanders: In addition to losing Daniels, rookie LT Brandon Coleman was concussed in the first half.

Up next

Panthers: At Denver next Sunday.

Commanders: Host Chicago next Sunday.

Instant analysis | Commanders cruise to 5-2 with 40-7 win vs. Panthers

It’s probably difficult for Washington Commanders fans to describe how they feel right now.

Washington, who returned to Northwest Stadium after suffering a Week 6 loss against the Baltimore Ravens to take on the Carolina Panthers and retire Hall of Fame cornerback Darrell Green’s jersey number, rolled the struggling NFC South opponent on both sides of the ball. They were up 34-0 six minutes into the third quarter, and the defense, which was tied for the fewest forced interceptions in the league, got two on the day, one of which was returned for a touchdown, as part of an overall smothering performance.

As exciting as it is for the Burgundy & Gold faithful, most of their attention was focused on quarterback Jayden Daniels, who left the 40-7 victory in the first quarter with a rib injury.

It is unclear on exactly which play Daniels sustained his injury, but it occurred on the opening drive for the Commanders’ offense. Daniels opened the day with a 46-yard run and got Washington down to the Panthers’ 5-yard line, but it was clear that he was experiencing some discomfort. The drive ended with a field goal, and Daniels went into the blue medical tent after talking to the medical staff.

Daniels tried warming up for the Commanders’ next offensive possession but was still experiencing some discomfort. He went to the locker room and was ruled out at the start of the second half. He returned to the sideline in street clothes and waved to the crowd, apparently in good spirits.

Coach Dan Quinn did not have an update on Daniels’ status after the game but did acknowledge the quarterback would go through more testing on Monday.

Falcons – Panthers final score predictions

Falcons – Panthers final score predictions

Feeling real confidence in these Atlanta Falcons after the past six years is perhaps a dangerous thing to do, but after the past couple of weeks it’s difficult not to feel pretty good about the team’s direction. That’s especially true with a really injured, shaky opponent next on the docket.

Will that add up to a road win for the Falcons? Adnan Ikic and I weighed in with our predictions for today, and then we welcome yours.

Falcons 27 – Panthers 17

Look at this matchup from any angle and you’ll be hard-pressed to find an area where the Panthers outmatch the Falcons. They might be about the same against the run and a little better at forcing the occasional turnover, but in every other way you can think of, the Panthers are worse. What we all fear is the Falcons coming out flat, making loads of mistakes, or both.

I think a team that has shown some real signs of improvement and learning from their past mistakes, and now they get by far their most straightforward matchup of the season with the passing game humming, clear improvement attainable and a favorable matchup for the ground game, and a weak offense for this scuffling defense. I don’t think it’ll be lopsided and I doubt it will all be pretty, but the Falcons should win this one, and they should do so by two scores. -Dave Choate

Falcons 31 – Panthers 14

I get that this is a road divisional game, and that anything can happen when two NFC South teams clash. I understand the apprehension to fully trust the Falcons to not play down to their competition when they have made that not only a habit but even an identity over the past seven years, but this is the moment when this Atlanta team will prove to be different from past renditions who have let us down over the years.

The Panthers are maybe the worst team in football. They sit in a cluster of disappointing 1-4 teams and have by far the worst net point differential in the league, having lost by two scores or more in all four of their defeats. Atlanta is on a heater right now and coming off of an extra three days of rest. I expect the offense to continue where they left off from in Week 5 and for the defense to stifle Carolina for the most part. This should not even be close. –Adnan Ikic

The Panthers have won two of the last three meetings, including a 9-7 low-scoring affair last December. Atlanta is 2-3 against the spread, while Carolina is 1-4 ATS in 2024.

Why the Falcons can cover

The Falcons continue to find ways to win close games, with victories of one, two, and six points this season. Their offense continues to play at a high level, as evidenced by last week’s win over Tampa Bay. Quarterback Kirk Cousins completed 42 passes for a career-high 509 yards and four touchdowns in the team’s win over the Buccaneers last Thursday. Wide receiver Drake London has been nearly impossible to guard of late, catching 12 passes for 154 yards and a score in the Week 5 thrilling victory. Fellow WR Darnell Mooney caught nine passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns and has been a solid complement to London this season.

If Atlanta is going to make a legitimate run at the division title, they need improved play from running back Bijan Robinson. The second year pro hasn’t lived up to his potential in 2024, rushing for only 285 yards and generating 151 yards through the air, while finding the end zone only one time. Against a Panthers defense surrendering the fifth most total yards to their opponents (371.2), this would be a prime spot for Robinson to explode for a big performance. See which team to pick here.

Why the Panthers can cover

Though Carolina had been more competitive in veteran quarterback Andy Dalton’s first two starts, the Panthers bottomed out last week in Chicago, with the veteran only throwing for 136 yards and an interception. The Panthers could go back to last year’s No. 1 overall pick, Bryce Young, as the team falls further out of playoff contention, so Dalton has a limited time to turn around the team’s fate. Wide receiver Diontae Johnson caught a combined 15 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns in Dalton’s first two starts and should look to find success against a beatable Atlanta secondary.

The Panthers’ best player on offense this season has been running back Chuba Hubbard, who has 97 or more yards rushing in each of his last three games. Since Week 1, Hubbard is averaging 115 all purpose yards per game and has scored three times. Even with running back Jonathon Brooks (ACL) set to be activated in the near future, Hubbard will be tough to remove from the starting role considering his success thus far in 2024. See which team to pick here.

RECAP: Panthers 6, Bruins 4

RECAP: Panthers 6, Bruins 4

Moments before the puck went into the cage, Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo bumped Bennett and sent him flying in Korpisalo. For what seemed like the fourth or fifth time in the game, the gloves went flying again for both teams as the pushing and shoving continued.

“I think there’s a bit of a rivalry there and it’s continuously growing,” Rodrigues said. “They play hard. They’re well coached. They’re structured. They play the game the right way. I think you have two teams battling it out.”

At 16:51, Trent Frederic found the back of the net to trim Boston’s deficit to 6-3. Making it a two-goal game for the Bruins not long after that, David Pastrnak, who scored a team-high 47 goals last season, slipped a shot past Bobrovsky on the power play to make it 6-4 at 18:15.

From there, the Panthers held on until the rats started flying.

With one down and 81 more games to go, two points is a great start.

“It was perfect for us,” Rodrigues said. “That’s the style we like to play and the type of hockey we like to play. It’s nice getting right into it in Game 1. I think it welcomed all the new guys to the team. It started off as a special night and ended pretty well, too.”

THEY SAID IT

“They (the players) work hard. That’s not the coach. Maybe the first camp it was, but they work hard. They’re on each other in practice and they’re in the weight room and they drive hard. We have a lot of confidence in the pace of our game.” – Paul Maurice

“I think it was good to get [the first goal] and just relax in the game a little bit.” – Sam Bennett

“Every game we seem to play against them (Boston) seems to be an entertaining one.” – Evan Rodrigues

FIVE CATS STATS

– Aleksander Barkov has recorded an assist in ten straight Home Openers.

– Sergei Bobrovsky collected his seventh career season-opening win.

– Eleven different Panthers recorded at least one point.

– Anton Lundell fired a team-leading five shots on goal.

– The Panthers led 30-18 in scoring chances at 5-on-5.

WHAT’S NEXT?

It’s already time to hit the road!

Kicking off a four-game trip, the Panthers will visit the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET.

Bears improve to 3-2 with rout of Panthers

After the Panthers (1-4) took an early 7-0 lead, the Bears answered as Williams capped a 7-play, 70-yard drive with a 34-yard touchdown pass to Moore, tying the score 7-7. Williams completed 3 of 3 passes for 48 yards and Swift rushed for 22 yards on four carries on the possession.

Roschon Johnson’s 1-yard TD run gave the Bears a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter. The score capped a 13-play, 80-yard drive that was highlighted by Williams’ 26-yard pass to Moore and Swift’s 18-yard run.

The Bears defense generated its first takeaway of the game as Jaquan Brisker blasted tight end Tommy Tremble after a 9-yard reception, forcing a fumble that Gervon Dexter Sr. recovered at the Panthers’ 44.

On the next play, Swift caught a screen pass from Williams and weaved through the defense for 42 yards to the Carolina 2. Two plays later, Swift’s 1-yard TD run increased the Bears’ lead to 21-7 with 2:14 remaining in the half.

Williams followed with a beautiful 30-yard TD pass to Moore, who leaped over cornerback Mike Jackson with :24 to play in the half. Cairo Santos missed the extra point attempt, but the Bears led 27-7.

The Panthers were in position to score on the subsequent drive, but Eddy Piñeiro missed a 45-yard field goal attempt wide left on the final play of the first half.

In the first half, Williams completed 11 of 15 passes for 200 yards with two TDs and a 154.9 passer rating. Swift rushed for 67 yards and one TD on 15 carries and caught one pass for 42 yards. Moore had three receptions for 87 yards and two TDs.

The Bears defense recorded its second takeaway early in the third quarter as Kevin Byard III intercepted a deep Andy Dalton pass.

Santos’ 33-yard field goal increased the Bears’ lead to 30-7 midway through the third period. The kick came after Williams’ apparent 1-yard TD scramble was nullified by a clipping penalty on Doug Kramer Jr.

Piñeiro’s 27-yard field goal cut the deficit to 30-10 with 2:10 left in the third quarter.

The defense produced its third takeaway of the game as Tremaine Edmunds stripped the ball from Hubbard after a 2-yard reception and Kyler Gordon recovered at the Panthers’ 18. The Bears converted the turnover into Johnson’s 1-yard TD run, increasing their lead to 36-10 with 4:23 to play.

“I was really proud of the guys that recovered those fumbles,” Eberflus said. “To get a recovered fumble you have to be husting the way we do it. It just doesn’t show up because we expect everybody to punch at the ball and when the ball comes out, that person’s hustling because he anticipated that ball was going to be there. It doesn’t happen but a couple times a game, so you have to be going, and I’m proud of the guys that way.”

The Bears will look for their third straight victory next Sunday when they face the Jaguars at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

Bengals at Panthers Postgame Notes and Quotes

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Running backs Zack Moss and Chase Brown scored on one-yard plays to end the first half and open the second, and the Bengals used the “double-dip” to post their first win of the year in a 34-24 victory over the Panthers.

Quarterback Joe Burrow threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns, one a 63-yard-catch-and-run play by wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase. Brown and Moss combined to put the Bengals over 100 yards rushing.

NOTES

Burrow Hits 15K

Joe Burrow surpassed 15,000 career passing yards on his first completion of the third quarter, a 10-yarder to tight end Erick All Jr. Playing in his 56th game, Burrow tied for the fourth-fastest player in NFL history to reach 15,000 passing yards.

Burrow finished the day 22 of 31 for 232 yards and two touchdowns with one interception, good for a passer rating of 100.5.

Burrow Through 2,000 Attempts

Burrow threw his 2,000th career pass attempt on the Bengals’ opening offensive possession. His 1,363 completions at the time he reached that mark went in as the second-most in NFL history through any quarterback’s first 2,000 attempts. Only former San Diego/New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees had more (1,444).

Joe to Ja’Marr For 63

Burrow found Ja’Marr Chase over the middle on a third down in the second quarter, and the Pro Bowler fought off would-be tacklers to take it for a 63-yard touchdown. It marked Chase’s ninth career receiving touchdown of 60 or more yards, the most in the NFL since he entered the league in 2021. It also ties former Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. for the most such touchdowns in the Super Bowl era by a player under the age of 25.

The play also marked Burrow’s 15th career touchdown pass of 50 or more yards, the most leaguewide since the start of the 2020 season.

Ja’Marr Reaches 4K

Chase finished with three catches for 85 yards and his third touchdown of the season. He reached 4,000 career receiving yards in the process, and playing in his 49th game he became the fastest Bengal ever to do so. Chase surpassed A.J. Green, who hit the 4K mark in his 50th game.

Chase also became just the fifth player in the Super Bowl era to reach 4,000+ receiving and 30+ receiving touchdowns in his first 50 games, joining Green, Beckham Jr., and Pro Football Hall of Famers Randy Moss and Jerry Rice.

Bengals Execute “Double-Dip”

Cincinnati successfully pulled off the “double-dip,” scoring a touchdown on the final true possession of the first half and the opening possession of the second half. The Bengals received the ball on their own 34-yard line with 1:08 remaining in the second quarter and marched on an eight-play, 66-yard drive capped off by a Burrow-to-Zack Moss TD pass with one second left on the clock.

It marked the latest Bengals touchdown scored in a first half since A.J. Green caught a 48-yard pass from Andy Dalton with no time remaining in Week 7 of the 2016 season against Cleveland.

The Bengals then opened the third quarter with an eight play, 71-yard drive that was punctuated by Chase Brown’s second rushing score of the afternoon to make it 28-14.

Bell Sets Up Brown

Vonn Bell intercepted a Dalton pass that was affected by Trey Hendrickson in the first quarter, and returned the pick 32 yards to the Carolina 16. It was Bell’s eighth career interception and his first since Week 2 of last season, which also came at Bank of America Stadium when he played for the Panthers.

The pick made way for Chase Brown’s first career rushing touchdown five plays later that gave Cincinnati a 7-0 lead. The second-year back out of Illinois had one previous career touchdown via a screen pass he took 54 yards to the end zone in Week 14 last season versus Indianapolis.

Money Mac Good From 56

Evan McPherson drilled a 56-yard field goal to boost the Bengals’ lead to 31-14 late in the third quarter. It extended his Bengals career record to 24 field goals from 50+ yards, which also are the second-most in the NFL since he entered the league in 2021. It was McPherson’s longest field goal since Week 8 of last season at San Francisco — also a 56-yarder. McPherson later knocked through a 46-yard field goal with 1:14 remaining to put Cincinnati up by 10 and seal the victory.

Panthers get a needed road win, beat the Raiders 36-22

There was a sense of equilibrium restored with the win because having a passing game that worked set up the other stuff and allowed them to show the progress that head coach Dave Canales talked about seeing in other areas.

They gained 437 total yards, after gaining 359 combined in the first two games of the season (193 in New Orleans, 159 last week at home against the Chargers).

Chuba Hubbard ran for 114 yards on 21 carries, and caught one of the first-half touchdown passes from Dalton (finishing with 169 yards from scrimmage). He also passed Stephen Davis for seventh on the franchise’s all-time rushing list during the game.

Diontae Johnson and Adam Thielen had the other two receiving touchdowns in the first half, as the Panthers added the downfield element to the passing game. They had five passes of 20 yards or more in the first half alone (they had none in the first two games).

Johnson finished with eight catches for 122 yards and the score, the kind of lead-receiver production they were hoping for when they acquired the former Steelers wideout in a March trade.

It was one game, to be sure. But it was one they very much needed.

Andy Dalton accomplishes feat no other QB has done in 2024 in leading Panthers past Raiders

Before Week 3, the Carolina Panthers had just one touchdown this season, but their first drive without quarterback Bryce Young ended in a touchdown. They also came away with their first victory since Dec. 31, 2023 and their first away win since the end of the 2022 season, defeating the Las Vegas Raiders 36-22 at Allegiant Stadium.

The former No. 1 overall pick was benched after the struggles from his rookie year continued into his sophomore season. Veteran quarterback Andy Dalton got the start and made an impact right away, becoming the first quarterback this season to throw for 300 yards and three touchdowns.

It didn’t take Dalton long to get things started in the right direction. On the game’s first series, he guided the offense 70 yards in nine plays in a drive that ended with a 6-yard pass to running back Chuba Hubbard. The Raiders tied things up in the first quarter with an Alexander Mattison 2-yard rushing touchdown, but it didn’t take Dalton much time to respond.

Dalton marched 75 yards down field and found wide receiver Diontae Johnson for a 5-yard TD to take back the lead. Carolina extended their lead to 14 points and Dalton is getting everyone in the offense involved, throwing his third touchdown of the day to the third different player before the half was over.

This time it was Adam Thielen scoring on a 31-yard pass. The Panthers 21 points this half are more than the scores of their first two games … combined.

Dalton finished the game going 26 of 37 with 319 yards, 74 more yards than Young’s first two games combined. He had more yards in the first half quarter than Young had in either game this year. Young went 31 of 56 with 245 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions in the first two weeks, including a pick on his first drive of the season.

At this rate, the job is now Dalton’s to lose.

Before Sunday, the only trip to the end zone for the Panthers this year was a 3-yard rush by Young. Their only other scores through two weeks were two field goals.

Before he was benched, Young went 2-16 in 18 starts with 3,122 yards, 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. In 14 years in the NFL, Dalton has a 83-78-2 record as a starter, with 38,511 yards, 246 touchdowns and 144.
