Wolves vs Liverpool LIVE: Result and reaction as Salah penalty gives unconvincing Reds win

(Getty Images)

Liverpool face Wolves in today’s late kick-off at the Molineux, with Arne Slot’s side looking to retain a place near the top of the Premier League table.

The Reds convincingly beat Bournemouth last time out, recovering from a 1-0 loss to Forest by putting three past their opponents, with Luis Diaz scoring a double.

Wolves took the lead against Aston Villa in their Midlands derby last week, only to lose 3-1 thanks to late goals from Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran. Gary O’Neil’s side currently sit bottom of the league, with just one point gained and 14 goals conceded, and are looking for their first win of the season in what will surely be a difficult game against Slot’s developing Liverpool team.

Arne Slot also spoke to Sky Sports, and he says that in the short term, the results are more important than the performance.

“For the long term you have to look at the performance. I don’t think we started well but you have to give credit to Wolves.

“They overloaded our right side a lot with many players. That’s why it was difficult at the start but second half we came out much better.

“The energy and intensity was much higher than the first 15 minutes.

“I saw the first goal and what stands out is the patience we have. In general we were much more patient.

The Dutchman goes on to praise Gravnberch and Mac Allister, before addressing Liverpool’s status as potential title contenders.

“We have a lot to prove when we come across the top sides. It’s good that we are where we are at the moment.

“I always try to be realistic, Jurgen’s work has been fantastic. We have to prove we can do it in the Champions League and Premier League.”

Toti Gomes is the Wolves player speaking to Sky, and he calls it “a tough defeat”.

“We started well and we were a bit unlucky suffering the first goal, but we responded immediately in the first half.

“We were not paying attention to some details. We deserved something from this game – at least a point.

“All the details count especially against the big teams. If you do little mistakes they will make a goal and we will suffer.

“It is not easy, but it is a matter of time [until results improve].

“We are not in a good phase, but we have to stick together. We have had tough defeats against big teams but we are going to keep fighting and we have a lot to prove.

“I ask the fans to stick with us, as we are going to keep improving.”

Konate and Gravenberch have been speaking to Sky Sports, and the former says that the team are “really happy”.

“Wolves were very good today and it was tough for us. We did really well”

Gravenberch says a team like Liverpool “has to be in the top four for sure, but we keep pushing”.

Konate adds that “every game is very hard” in the Premier League.

“But the fans expect three points, and we did it. We have an important game on Wednesday and we have to start the recovery now.

““We missed concentration and we have to work on it. Everything cannot be perfect every time. We need more focus during the game.”

FULL-TIME! Wolves 1-2 Liverpool

19:27 , Chris Wilson

96 mins

Suffice to say that Wolves are playing quite badly. They’re barely even willing to take the risk to throw men forwards as they look for an equaliser.

Another pass is played straight to a red shirt and the referee blows the final whistle!

Liverpool take three points in the end.

Wolves 1-2 Liverpool

95 mins

Time for one more Wolves attack, but it isn’t promising much.

liverpool give it away to Toti, who plays it across to Forbs. They go backwards to Lemina before Semedo plays a poor cross straight to a red shirt.

A slick move from Liverpool creates an opening in the box and the cross is fizzed across goal by Gakpo, but there’s nobody on the end of it.

At the other end, Alisson collects the ball once more after a brief Wolves attack.

Wolves 1-2 Liverpool

91 mins

Forbs has been one of Wolves’ only bright sparks since he came on, and he tries to get things moving, first with a cross and then with a dribble, but the ball ends up with Alisson.

There’ll be six minutes of added time.

Wolves 1-2 Liverpool

19:21 , Chris Wilson

89 mins

This has been a very strange match overall. Both sides have been pedestrian, but Liverpool almost look deliberately so, while Wolves have been forced into it by their lack of quality.

Wolves are really struggling in attack at the moment though, and Liverpool are happy to keep things as they are.

Robertson comes off for Joe Gomez.

A Liverpool corner goes all the way to an unmarked Jota at the far post, but he wasn’t expecting it and can’t react in time to turn it in.

Wolves 1-2 Liverpool

19:13 , Chris Wilson

81 mins

Salah wins a corner after bursting into the box, but he’s got a lot more urgency than his teammates at the moment. Robertson swings in the set-piece but Lemina heads clear, before Gravenberch does well to skip past a challenge in the area but then messes up the pass.

19:10 , Chris Wilson

78 mins

Better from the away side as Salah lays off a simple pass to Jones, who fizzes in a low shot that Johnstone gets down to save.

Wolves 1-2 Liverpool

77 mins

Some poor decision-making from both sides results in Liverpool making a mistake when they really should’ve scored. Semedo’s shot is charged down by Jones and Salah is clean through just past halfway. He opts to try and play the early through ball but he plays it straight to an orange shirt! Wasteful.

Wolves bring on Doyle for Bueno.

Still fairly pedestrian from Liverpool. They’re playing as if they’re 3-1 up in the 93rd minute, but it seems to be working so far.

GOAL! Wolves 1-1 Liverpool

56 mins

GOAL! Out of nowhere, Wolves are level!

It’s a mess from Liverpool in truth, too. It begins with brilliant work from Lemina, who breaks free in his half and feeds Cunha. The Brazilian tries to thread the ball to Strand Larsen, but Konate is covering. However, the Frenchman doesn’t deal with it properly and the Wolves man nips in to steal the ball and pass across to Forbs.

The sub stumbles as he tries to hit it under a challenge and the ball rolls to Ait-Nouri, who bundles it into the back of the net!

Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

18:45 , Chris Wilson

54 mins

Still very easy for Liverpool to control this one, even if they haven’t really left first gear. Wolves’ problem is illustrated perfectly as Johnstone collects a cross and there are no options for him to offload the ball to.

Wolves do mount an attack, but Cunha’s cross comes back off himself and off for a corner.

There have been some suggestions that Wolves’ position and points tally may not be representative of how they’ve played this season, though they’ve offered very little so far this half.

Liverpool haven’t played particularly well, but they’re ahead and also had the best chances overall – they should really be 2-0 up and out of sight.

The away side have a big task on their hands to turn this around, even if Liverpool are a little out of sorts.

Both sides struggled to impact the game for large parts of the first period, but the half ends with Konate rising high to head his side into the lead.

Hardly a classic, but an interesting second half to come. Liverpool are top of the league as it stands.

Wolves 0-1 Liverpool

47 mins

GOAL! And the away side are ahead!

They’ve played a few balls into the box, but this one changes things! Jota takes his man on down the left and hooks in a great cross – Ibrahima Konate is there to rise highest and power a header downwards and past Johnstone.

CLOSE! How has this not gone in?!

Van Dijk finds Robertson with a superb through ball, and the Scot’s cross is equally as brilliant. It’s put between Toti and the ‘keeper, and it’s straight to Szoboszlai, but he can only direct his effort right at Johnstone, and he makes a great save.

It’s still pretty stop-start at the Molineux, with little happening of note.

Wolves 0-0 Liverpool

18:02 , Chris Wilson

30 mins

Liverpool look to have settled now and they’re on top at the moment. They’ve just won a free-kick near the edge of the box as Andre lunges in on Mac Allister.

Wolves match facts

17:15 , Chris Wilson

The home side have lost more Premier League games against Liverpool than they have vs any other opponent – 16.

Wolves have lost 14 of their last 15 against the Reds in the league, with the exception being a 3-0 home win in February 2023.

Gary O’Neil’s side are without a league win so far this season, having drawn one game and lost four. Only in 2003/04 (first seven) and 2019/20 (first six) have they gone longer without a victory from the start of a Premier League campaign.

No Premier League side is on a longer run without a clean sheet than Wolves, who have conceded in each of their last 17 league matches.

Since the start of last season, Matheus Cunha has been involved in more Premier League goals for Wolves than any other player, with 21 – 14 goals and 7 assists.

Liverpool match facts

17:08 , Chris Wilson

Liverpool have won five of their last six Premier League games, keeping a clean sheet in each victory.

In addition, the Reds have kept a clean sheet in 65 per cent of their Premier League games against Wolves.

Arne Slot’s side have conceded the fewest goals of any Premier League side so far this season (just one), while no team has shipped more than Wolves’s 14.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s assist against Bournemouth last weekend was his 59th in the Premier League, moving him level with teammate Andrew Robertson for most assists by a defender in the competition’s history.

Luis Díaz has been involved in six goals in his last four Premier League appearances, scoring five and assisting one. He’s scored a brace in two of his last three for the Reds.

Can’t defend? Trent Alexander-Arnold out to reinvent himself as Europe’s toughest full-back

16:40 , Chris Wilson

If it seems that Arne Slot is picking on Trent Alexander-Arnold in the Liverpool dressing room, it is not because of a problem between them. Quite the opposite, actually. Because the right-back had an unusual request. He wanted his manager to criticise him, sometimes in front of his teammates. He asked him to mention every time a forward beat him and to brand it unacceptable. It is a punishing approach designed to make him better. He feels that Slot, with his attention to detail and track record of improving players, can help.

There is an understandable focus on their relationship. Alexander-Arnold represented one of the great triumphs of Jurgen Klopp’s management: first his decision not to buy a right-back because he knew of a teenage talent in the ranks, then as an extraordinary creator who reshaped Liverpool’s tactics as the full-backs attacked more than the midfield, and finally as the vice-captain who inverted into midfield.

It did not escape attention that Slot substituted Alexander-Arnold in each of his first three games or that the 25-year-old was unhappy to be taken off against Brentford. It is a cause of some concern that Alexander-Arnold is in the last year of his contract at Anfield. Yet if mentions of his future can involve talk of a free transfer last summer, Alexander-Arnold voiced his own ambition: to become the toughest defender to encounter in Europe.

Jamie Carragher makes fresh Liverpool title race prediction after Arsenal draw at Man City

16:30 , Chris Wilson

Liverpool sit second in the Premier League table after an impressive bounceback win over Bournemouth at the weekend and Jamie Carragherhas made a fresh title prediction involving the Reds after watching Arsenal’s draw at Manchester City.

Arne Slot’s side responded to their shock 1-0 Anfield defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest a week ago by brushing aside Bournemouth thanks to a Luis Diaz double and Darwin Nunez’s exquisite finish.

That victory has taken them to 12 points after just five games, with Callum Hudson-Odoi’s stunner for Forest the only goal they have conceded in the league so far this term, as Slot has quickly put his stamp on the side in the post-Jurgen Klopp era.

But despite Liverpool’s strong start, Reds legend and current Sky Sports pundit Carragher admits that Arsenal and City are still above Slot’s men as favourites for the title.

“I think it will be similar to last season where Liverpool are just slightly behind these two teams,” said Carragher on the Gary Neville Podcast. “By next season they could be really improving and maybe looking to go for it when the manager knows everything about his squad.”

Wolves team news

15:55 , Chris Wilson

Wolves will be without Yerson Mosquera after the Colombia defender had to be stretchered off against Aston Villa. He will likely be replaced by Santiago Bueno in central defence.

The midfield and attack will likely remain the same as it was against Villa, with Mario Lemina, João Gomes, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and Matheus Cunha having cemented their places in the starting eleven.

In addition, new signing Jørgen Strand Larsen will likely start up front once more.

Liverpool team news

15:50 , Chris Wilson

For Liverpool, Arne Slot has no new injury concerns after the game against West Ham. Alisson is targeting a return for this weekend, though Slot may be forced to go with Caoimhin Kelleher again in goal.

Federico Chiesa could play after featuring against West Ham in midweek, though he is unlikely to start ahead of Salah and the in-form Diaz.

In defence, the usual quartet will likely start, as will Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis MacAllister in midfield. It remains to be seen whether slot will once again favour Darwin Nunez up front over ex-Wolves man Diogo Jota.

Liverpool travel to Wolves in Saturday’s late match in the Premier League, with kick-off at 5.30pm BST at the Molineux Stadium.

The Reds have had a good fortnight since the loss to Nottingham Forest, beating AC Milan 3-1 at the San Siro before a 3-0 win against Bournemouth at Anfield last weekend.

Arne Slot’s side remain near the top of the Premier League table after five matches of the Dutchman’s tenure, and a win today would help to further solidify their title credentials.

Wolves have had a contrasting start to their season, with Gary O’Neil’s side sitting bottom of the league with just one point gained and 14 goals conceded.

While a win this afternoon would lift the mood at the Molineux, it is difficult to see the home side troubling a Liverpool side that seems to be enjoying its development under a new manager.

Barcelona 1-0 Getafe – La Liga result as Robert Lewandowski scores winner to send side four points clear

BARCELONA GO FOUR POINTS CLEAR AT TOP

A first half Robert Lewandowski goal was enough for Barcelona to continue their perfect start to La Liga with a 1-0 victory against Getafe.

Hansi Flick’s young side almost rued missing a host of chances as with the last kick of the match Getafe substitute Borja Mayoral fired wide.

Polish forward Lewandowski could have doubled his side’s lead before the break only to be denied by the visitors’ goalkeeper David Soria.

Soria was also on hand to tip a glorious effort from teenage sensation Lamine Yamal over the crossbar in the second half.

Yamal also hit the crossbar as he capitalised on a tiring Getafe defence and Barcelona skipper Raphinha also had chances to secure the points.

However, Barcelona will breathe a sigh of relief as they sit four points clear at the summit of La Liga.

Despite controlling possession Flick’s young side showed weaknesses in defence as they head to Osasuna looking to make it eight league wins on the bounce.

Meanwhile, Getafe have just four points to their name from seven matches but will be encouraged by another strong defensive performance.

Getafe have home games against Alaves and Osasuna when they will hope to pick up a first league win.

Arsenal vs Bolton LIVE: Carabao Cup result and reaction as Nwaneri and Sterling score first Gunners goals

(Action Images via Reuters)

Follow live reaction coverage after Arsenal faced Bolton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup third round.

The Gunners fought out a memorable and hard-fought draw with Man City at the weekend, but given they were seconds from victory, the point will have felt like two lost at the Etihad. Mikel Arteta rotated his pack heavily after that tense encounter, with 16-year-old goalkeeper Jack Porter getting a debut between the sticks and Ethan Nwaneri another young starter.

Arteta was rewarded by two goals from the latter, his first senior goals, as Raheem Sterling also netted his first Gunners goal in an eventual 5-1 win, with Kai Havertz wrapping up the scoring following Declan Rice’s early opener. Aaron Collins netted a consolation for the visitors in the second half to deny Porter a clean sheet, but Bolton were well beaten.

West Ham vs Chelsea LIVE: Premier League result and reaction after visitors cruise to victory

Chelsea produced a strong performance to capitalise on an abject West Ham United showing and climb into the Premier League’s top four.

An early double from Nicolas Jackson set the visitors on course before Cole Palmer added a third in the second half to make certain of victory for Enzo Maresca’s side. After an unsettled start to the season amid off-field chaos and on-field questions, this was a third win on the bounce for Chelsea as they continue to show signs of real promise under their new manager. Jadon Sancho, making his first start, again impressed while the sometimes profligate Jackson took both of his goals nicely.

It was a rather more fretful afternoon for Julen Lopetegui, the West Ham boss casting a frustrated figure on the touchline. Midfielder Guido Rodriguez was hooked after just 35 minutes as Lopetegui tried unsuccessfully to spark his side into life. Audible boos were heard at half time while plenty of home fans headed for the exit with 15 minutes still to play after another lacklustre performance.

Re-live all the action from the London Stadium in our live blog below:

Nicolas Jackson brace helps Chelsea ease to victory as West Ham fans turn on Julen Lopetegui

14:49 , Chris Wilson

Goals from Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer secured another away win for Chelsea and raised serious questions about West Ham‘s direction under new boss Julen Lopetegui.

The Spaniard looked furious as his expensively-assembled side crashed to a humiliating 3-0 defeat at home to their London rivals.

Jackson scored twice, the first within three minutes of kick-off, and Palmer added a third just moments into the second half.

It means all Lopetegui has to show for a £120m outlay on nine summer signings since replacing David Moyes is three home defeats, a scrappy win at Crystal Palace and a last-gasp draw with Fulham.

Just five matches in and the London Stadium crowd – many of whom wanted Moyes out despite the Scot overseeing the club’s most successful period in decades – turned on the new manager midway through the second half.

Chelsea ease to victory as West Ham fans turn on Lopetegui

Lopetegui says that West Ham “suffered very early on, [with] two goals”.

“If you want to compete you have to be consistent. After this it is more difficult.

“We had more chances than them in the first half, we had one penalty, maybe two, and we said that one goal is going to be key in changing the match, but after we conceded a goal too.

“[We’re] very sad, very disappointed, for the fans above all, but we know that the league is long, and we have to look forward and have to change things.”

15:02 , Chris Wilson

Enzo Maresca is speaking to TNT now, and he says he is “very happy”.

“They are a very good team, they have some fantastic players, but overall it think we deserved to win the game.

“It’s quite easy, if they [the players] don’t buy [into it] they don’t play!

“They have been open minded, we have been a bit intense, but this is the moment when I need to insist.”

He adds that he is most happy with “Nicolas and Cole, because the way we prepared was to set them against three players. [They scored] the goals but especially the work off the ball.”

Bowen is speaking to TNT now, and he says that he doesn’t think “we were ever in the game really”.

“I think the goals they scored were every easy, almost gifts. You have to be switched on at every moment, and they punished us.[We’re] disappointed all round.”

He says that “a number of things” went wrong.

“As a player you have to lead and rally everyone together, but I just thought we gave them too much respect in the end. I dont think we did enough today to punish them.

“We came out second half, almost nothing to lose, and we concede a goal after a minute.

“[It was] a disappointing day, but the game is done, we accept the defeat.

“The games are coming thick and fast. It’s still early in the season, still a lot of games to go, and now it’s about rallying together as a group.”

Since making his debut for Chelsea in September 2023, Cole Palmer has contributed to more goals in the Premier League than any other player, with 39 G/A. Haaland is next up, with 38.

14:48 , Chris Wilson

Jackson adds that his confidence is “growing higher with my teammates, they help me a lot and they have confidence in me”

“We keep going. This one is finished and next week we go onto another one.

“The most important thing is for the team to win.

“I am happy to play always. To fight for the team and the team to win is the most important thing.”

FT: West Ham 0-3 Chelsea

14:43 , Chris Wilson

Palmer and Jackson spoke to TNT after the final whistle, with the Englishman saying that the London Stadium is “a tough place to come”

“A good three points, we are happy.

“Everybody knows he [Nicolas Jackson] is a top player – he needs to keep going. The Chelsea fans and players rate him highly – we know what he is capable of.

“There will always be noise, we try to block it out and listen to the manager. We have a good manager and it can only help us to get better.”

A dominant display from Chelsea that puts them into second place in the league for now.

The away side were sharp and clinical when they needed to be, and in truth it was a surprisingly easy result for them.

For West Ham, it was an abject performance that was seriously poor in some areas, with some truly terrible defending. The attacking play was better in some places, but you really have to question what Lopetegui was doing today.

A poor first half from the home side overall, with the defending for the two goals among some of the worst you will see this season.

In attack, they managed to create some decent opportunities, but this game has got away from them and their defensive fragility looks like it could be revealed again at any moment.

For Chelsea, they’ll go into the break absolutely delighted, but also a little confused as to how they’re 2-0 up while barely having to take their foot off the gas.

The home fans will be hoping for a way back into the game, but it’s difficult to see one at this point, even if Chelsea do sometimes look fragile in defence themselves.

A good defensive header from Colwill gives West Ham a corner after their first good bit of attacking play so far.

Bowen swings it in, but both attempts are headed away before he slips a ball into the box for Paqueta. The Brazilian returns the pass, but Bowen fires well wide after attempting a first-time side-footed finish.

West Ham are struggling to settle here, and they don’t look comfortable when defending or in possession.

Another long ball forward goes straight to a Chelsea defender, and the away side are happy to keep possession near their box briefly, before it’s fired wide to Palmer and then Madueke, but the attack breaks down.

Emerson leads the counter but he’s so isolated, though he does well to win a free-kick near the edge of the area.

Maresca speaks to TNT

12:23 , Chris Wilson

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca tells TNT that it “nice to be back” at West Ham, where he “spent almost two years” as assistant manager, “with some good players and good human beings.

“For sure the results are always important. The main thing is to see how the team progress and adapt. I think we’re going in the right direction.”

On Jadon Sancho starting, he says: “It was not simple [choice] because we have more players. But we decided on Jadon and hope it is the right decision.”

Chelsea match facts

12:20 , Chris Wilson

Chelsea could win their opening three away games of a Premier League season for the first time since 2017/18.

The Blues’ 1-0 win at Bournemouth last weekend ended a run of 20 consecutive away matches in all competitions without a clean sheet.

In 2024, only Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool have earned more points in the Premier League than Chelsea’s 42.

The Blues have been shown 16 yellow cards this season, more than any other side in the top flight. Eight of those came in their last game against Bournemouth.

Christopher Nkunku has currently scored more goals for Chelsea (6) than he has made starts (5).

Match facts

12:15 , Chris Wilson

West Ham could begin a season with three straight home league defeats for the first time if they were to lose today. The Hammers have faced a league-high 73 shots across their opening four matches, and they have failed to keep a clean sheet in 11 home league games since a 0-0 draw versus Brighton in January.

Lopetegui’s side have won only two of their 12 Premier League home fixtures in 2024 (D6, L4), beating Brentford 4-2 and Luton 3-1.

The Hammers are the first club to play their opening five matches of a Premier League season in London since Charlton Athletic in 2006-07. Their first league game outside the capital isn’t until early November.

Michail Antonio could become the first player to reach 100 Premier League goal involvements for West Ham today – he currently has 67 goals and 32 assists.

These two sides have met a total of 122 times, with the first meeting taking place in 1923. Chelsea have won 55 matches, with West Ham winning 44 and 23 ending as draws.

Chelsea have won 30 of the 56 Premier League meetings between the two – they’ve only beaten Tottenham more often in the division (35 times).

The home team won both Premier League matches last season: 3-1 for West Ham at the London Stadium and 5-0 for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Enzo Maresca backs players over strike threat

11:50 , Chris Wilson

Footballers are playing too many games and not enough is being done to protect them, according to Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca.

In the same week that Manchester City’s Rodri suggested fotballers could strike in response to fixture congestion and a lack of consultation from governing bodies, Maresca said that refusing to play “could be an idea” and hinted he believes players would be right to take action against the number of games they are being made to play.

Chelsea and City are due to take part in FIFA’s inaugural Club World Cup in the United States next summer, further limiting the amount of downtime players will get in between seasons following Euro 2024 and ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Asked whether he felt there were too many games in the current football calendar, Maresca said: “Yes, no doubt.

“In terms of games, it’s too much. I don’t think we protect players. We can say what we think and for me it’s completely wrong the amount of games that we have.

“The only ones that can do something are the players and we can help them. In the last two weeks some of the players have tried to explain what they think. I think it’s a good starting point.

“Some of them have said (they could strike). I think it could be an idea for them.”

Rodri warns players could strike over increase in fixtures: ‘We are close to that’

Julen Lopetegui not pre-occupied by potential Lucas Paqueta betting ban

11:40 , Chris Wilson

West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui has not spoken with Lucas Paqueta about the FA gambling charges and possible suspension hanging over the Brazilian, and admitted he is reluctant to load too much creative responsibility on to the playmaker after a muted beginning to the season.

The 27-year-old is facing a lengthy ban if found guilty of breaching regulations relating to “spot fixing” in four Premier League matches during the 2022/23 season, when it is alleged he deliberately got booked in order to influence the betting market.

The Hammers have made a mixed start to life under Lopetegui with just one win in their first four league fixtures, and are yet to pick up a point at home ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Chelsea at the London Stadium.

The limited impact made so far by Paqueta, whose only goal involvement came via a penalty in the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, has not helped as the former Real Madrid and Spain coach seeks to transform the team’s playing style from the defensive football favoured by predecessor David Moyes into a more expressive brand of play.

The drawn-out nature of the FA’s disciplinary process means the former Lyon winger is likely to be available to play for much of this season, and the manager said he is satisfied with what he has seen so far.

“I’m happy with his behaviour and his commitment,” said Lopetegui. “He’s working very hard, he’s trying to understand what we want. We’re trying to help him to be better and better. He’s an important player.

“I don’t want to put this kind of responsibility on one player. He has to do the best he can about the offensive phase and defensive phase.

“When he is focused on the defensive work he is a much better player and we try to encourage him to always be focused in a defensive way as well as an offensive way.

“He managed (the betting scandal) in a good way. We try to help him, because until now he is one player more.

“But we don’t talk about (the charges). We talk about football, about the next match and about life. But not about this.”

Ben Chilwell handed Chelsea lifeline as Enzo Maresca considers him for selection

11:30 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Ben Chilwell has been handed a Chelsea lifeline after head coach Enzo Maresca confirmed he is under consideration for selection after returning to training with the first team.

The England defender appeared to have no future at Stamford Bridge in August when he was not included in the core group of 22 or 23 players the Italian considered to be his first-team squad, and was told he could leave.

However, he has been named amongst the club’s 25-man squad eligible to play in the Premier League, and ahead of Saturday’s trip to face West Ham Maresca said the situation had changed.

Jack Draper v Alex de Minaur LIVE: Latest US Open tennis result and score as British No 1 surges into semi-final

(Getty Images)

Jack Draper book his place in a first grand slam semi-final after a dominant win over Australia’s Alex de Minaur at the US Open.

The British No.1 had never reached this stage of a major before but showed no nerves at Flushing Meadows, continuing to progress without dropping a set in a 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 victory. Draper has been in unbelievable form so far during his campaign in New York and showcased his strokemaking style throughout, surviving a slight second set wobble to re-assert his authority and seal a straight sets win.

It was a disappointing performance from De Minaur, though the Australian appeared to be struggling at times with the hip issue that forced him to withdraw from this same stage at Wimbledon. The tenth seed was never able to match his opponent’s power-striking or challenge his serve often enough, stumbling out of the blocks and never recovering. Draper will take on Jannik Sinner or Daniil Medvedev on Friday for a place in the US Open final.

Jack Draper further announced himself as the new star of British tennis by reaching the US Open semi-finals.

In the first grand slam since Andy Murray ended his stellar career, Draper has stepped up into the limelight and is taking New York by storm.

His 6-3 7-5 6-2 win in the quarter-final against World No 10 Alex De Minaur saw him become the first British man to reach the last four at Flushing Meadows since Murray won it in 2012.

“It’s amazing. Honestly, to be out here in my first match in the biggest court in the world is a dream come true for me. It means the world.

“I think I played a solid match. I feel the best fitness wise I have been in a long, long time, and that’s where Alex has got me in the past. I think he was struggling with something today, but he’s an unbelievable fighter and we are going to have many more battles to come.

“I’m a big tennis fan so I’ll definitely be watching the match tonight if it doesn’t go too late. I’ll enjoy the win and relax.”

A slightly nervy backward glance from Alex de Minaur as he checks the flight path has been filed correctly on a Jack Draper lob he lefts go by, but the air traffic controller is spot on, the landing made on a runway down the tramlines. An ace up the middle is a rather pleasant way to hold again.

A strong start from Alex de Minaur, still walking tall as he refuses to let his head drop. How much is that hip bothering him? His rally in that second set was impressive but you do wonder whether the Australian can last what will have to be a five-setter for him to progress.

GAME AND SECOND SET! Jack Draper extends advantage!

Steady as you like from Jack Draper, serving to stay in the set and producing a couple of colossal strokes. His coach urges him to back his ballstriking skills, the British player perhaps guilty of being a little too cute as he let his second set lead slkip.

Jack Draper* 6-3, 4-5 Alex de Minaur

Three on the spin for Alex de Minaur with a hold achieved without facing a break point, a relative rarity today. The pressure follows the Australian’s winners across the net.

Jack Draper 6-3, 4-4 Alex de Minaur*

Alex de MInaur breaks! Outstanding from the Aussie, back on level terms in the second as he refuses to succumb to Jack Draper’s power game. An ill-advised drop shot goes awry from Draper to give him a helping hand, but from 2-4 (0-40), this has been some sequence.

Jack Draper* 6-3, 4-3 Alex de Minaur

Wallop! A mighty forehand winner from Jack Draper, his eighth of the match, is not far at all from Alex de Minaur but past the Australian in a flash as it clips the white stuff.

De Minaur ensures, though, that perhaps the shot of the match goes uncapitalised upon, again lifting his intensity to guts out a hold.

A superb passing shot to save break point! Alex de Minaur looks to have played the point perfectly, navigating to the net but failing to put a block volley away, allowing Jack Draper to sweep to his left and carve a glorious forehand off the tip of the Australian’s racquet and into the far corner.

And Draper completes the escape! That feels like a potentially crucial hold to keep his momentum rolling.

Lively counterpunching from Jack Draper, a couple of jabs and then a left hook of a forehand to secure a break point.

The physio retrieves the tape and wraps it tightly around Draper’s right thigh, mummifying the muscle. Just precautionary, it would seem, and all done promptly during the change of ends.

Jack Draper* 6-3, 2-1 Alex de Minaur

19:57 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Oh no. Alex de Minaur paws at his sore hip, the medical staff waiting to attend to him at the change of ends. He’s clearly in discomfort, grimacing as he underweights a drop shot.

Jack Draper breaks again, and on comes the physio…but it is to Draper he goes! The British No 1 just slipped slightly at the end of the first set and wants his hamstring seen to.

Jack Draper 6-3, 1-1 Alex de Minaur*

19:54 , Harry Latham-Coyle

When Draper has landed his serve today, he’s been close to unstoppable. The leftie dropped just a single point on first serve in the opening set and that big wing flaps effectively in the second on his way to a comfortable hold.

Jack Draper* 6-3, 0-1 Alex de Minaur

19:52 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Alex de Minaur just needs to find some energy here. He holds at the start of the second to go ahead in the match for the first time. The Australian has not yet able to really make Jack Draper work often enough for his points.

A strange change-up from Jack Draper at 30-15 with the set close, serving and volleying twice. The first foray forward works as Alex de Minaur fails to keep the ball in play, but he yorks himself on set point to keep the Australian alive.

And a double fault gives him a glimmer…

Jack Draper* 5-3 Alex de Minaur

But there is no question that Draper has been the faster out of the gate. An ace threatens to drag Alex de Minaur out of danger having again fallen to 15-40, but a forehand clunks down out of the bounds of the court as Draper re-establishes his lead.

Jack Draper 2-1 Alex De Minaur*

A double fault opens the door for Alex de Minaur to break back instantly, and the Australian obliges! An excellent response after a sluggish start.

Jack Draper* 2-0 Alex De Minaur

19:11 , Harry Latham-Coyle

A tough start for Alex De Minaur, a touch tight as he warms to his work and not finishing his groundstrokes in the manner that he would like to. 0-30 becomes 15-40 as Jack Draper wins an exchange at the net.

Two break points…and the Brit breaks immediately! De Minaur tugs a backhand wide.

Jack Draper 1-0 Alex De Minaur*

A good start from Draper, an unreturned serve to open before a rally won decisively. An ace down the midddle, bent elegantly by the southpaw, keeps him ticking.

Out the players come, Jack Draper striding out with a raised fist, saluting the crowd. Hmm…is Alex De Minaur’s gait just ever so slightly uncomfortable? Jack Draper is not ‘the next Andy Murray’ but he can emulate his friend and idol at US Open

18:50 , Lawrence Ostlere

Jack Draper and Andy Murray are both tennis players, but that’s just about where the likeness stops. At 22, Murray was still feeling his way into the spotlight after reaching the quarter-finals of Wimbledon, painted at the time as some kind of misanthrope, an implacable grump. By contrast Draper, who plays in his first grand slam quarter-final on Wednesday, is embracing the fame. “I quite enjoy being in front of the camera,” he told British Vogue while doing a cover shoot this summer. “If I’m looking good, that is.”

With the first match of the day done and dusted, it won’t be long now until Jack Draper and Alex De Minaur are out on court. So, about that Beatriz Haddad Maia fightback – the Brazilian is broken in her next service game, Karolina Muchova manipulating the angles superbly. It’ll be either Iga Swiatek or Jessica Pegula up next for the winner of the day’s first quarter-final, and Beatriz Haddad Maia is looking much better in the opening games of the second set, her strokes crisper, her movements sharper. All on serve at 2-1 in the Brazilian’s favour.

Jack Draper v Alex de Minaur

Jack Draper has yet to drop a set and has not lost more than four games in a set during his US Open campaign.

Only Novak Djokovic (four times) and Andre Agassi have dropped fewer games in making the US Open quarter-finals in the Open era.

The Briton’s combined seven hours on court is the least of the quarter-finalists by around an hour and a half and it is only the third time Draper has gone beyond the second round of a major.

Draper and De Minaur will be on court at the conclusion of Karolina Muchova vs Beatriz Haddad Maia – which may be pretty soon, if the first set is anything to go by. Muchova, who is in some form, has surged out of the blocks to take it 6-1 and is already threatening Haddad Maia’s serve in the second.

Roger Federer says there are still questions to be answered over Jannik Sinner doping case

17:54 , Mike Jones

Roger Federer has questioned why Jannik Sinner was not provisionally suspended after the Italian world number one failed two drugs tests earlier in the year.

In March, Sinner twice tested positive for clostebol, an anabolic steroid. He claimed the steroid had entered his system through a massage from his physiotherapist, and was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing by an independent tribunal in August.

Federer weighed in on the debate when speaking to NBC, saying: “I understand the frustration of, ‘Has he been treated the same as others?’ And I think this is where it comes down to

“I think we all trust pretty much that Jannik didn’t do anything, but the inconsistency potentially that he didn’t have to sit out while they weren’t 100 per cent sure what was going on, I think that’s the question that needs to be answered.

“It’s not something we want to see in our sport — this type of news — regardless if he did something or not, or any player did. It’s just noise that we don’t want. I understand it’s a tricky situation. It’s the nightmare of every athlete and team to have these allegations and these problems.

“And it lives with you. Every morning when you wake up, you think, ‘Is somebody at the door coming to test me?’ So it’s really difficult.”

Jannik Sinner sets up quarter-final clash with Daniil Medvedev

Jannik Sinner set up a blockbusting US Open quarter-final with Daniil Medvedev in a repeat of the Australian Open final.

The world number one gave the best indication that he is in the right mental state to prosper in New York after a gritty three-set win over home favourite Tommy Paul in the fourth round.

Sinner came into the tournament under a black cloud after it was revealed he had escaped a ban, despite failing two anti-doping tests earlier this year.

De Minaur on facing Draper

17:42 , Mike Jones

Alex de Minaur, whose girlfriend is British No.1 Katie Boulter, has won all three previous meetings against Jack Draper but is taking nothing for granted.

“I think the biggest thing that we need to understand is that there is nothing sure in tennis, right? Doesn’t matter how many times you’ve played someone. It doesn’t mean much,” he said.

“So playing Jack, he’s coming off his best year by far. He’s playing with a lot of confidence. He’s got some very big weapons; his serve, backhand, and forehand at times.

“So it’s always tough facing someone like him, especially a lefty.”

Draper happy to seek Andy Murray’s advice

17:36 , Mike Jones

The British No. 1 Jack Draper says he will not be afraid to tap into Andy Murray’s knowledge of playing on the biggest stage but does not want to disrupt his time on the golf course.

“I feel like he would completely understand and respond to any messages I send him and would give me advice, but I think also at the same time I think he’s kind of enjoying his retirement now, and he’s kind of done with it,” Draper said.

“I know if I have any questions or if I’m feeling something, then he’ll be the first person I text. I know that he’d be there for me if I need him.”

Jessica Pegula reaches her 7th Grand Slam quarterfinal. She is 0-6 at that stage so far

17:30 , Mike Jones

Jessica Pegula is back in the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open after a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Diana Shnaider on Monday, her seventh trip to that round at a Grand Slam tournament. Now comes the hard part: Pegula is 0-6 in major quarterfinals over her career.

The No. 6-seeded Pegula, an American whose parents own the NFL’s Buffalo Bills and NHL’s Buffalo Sabres, is on quite a run at the moment, having won 13 of her past 14 matches, all on hard courts. That included her second consecutive title in Canada and an appearance in the final at the Cincinnati Open, where she lost to No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka.

“I feel like there’s been more pressure this year, because I did so well coming into this tournament,” said the 30-year-old Pegula, the oldest woman left in the field. “I want to keep working my way and hopefully bringing my best tennis for the later rounds this time.”

‘Still a long way to go’ for Draper

17:22 , Mike Jones

Jack Draper feels he still has a lot to give and that he can go deeper into the US Open. He said: “I feel like there’s still a long way for me to go and a lot that I can still improve on in this tournament, and I think obviously as the challenge gets higher and as I play even better players, I think hopefully my level will increase with that.

“I think that’s the main thing about tennis. You know, we can’t play our best tennis all the time.

“It’s about how we’re coming through on the days when we’re not playing our best or when things aren’t perfect or when we’re not feeling great.”

Draper on progressing at US Open

17:16 , Mike Jones

“I think I’ve just got to keep on going because I know that there’s still room for improvement and still room to hopefully go further in the tournament,” said Jack Draper when asked about this great run at the US Open.

“I feel like in most of the matches I’ve just had to control what I can control. I feel like my base level is good, but I still feel like if I need to, I can improve my level a lot more.

Jack Draper blends style with substance to reach US Open quarter-finals in front of watching Vogue editor

17:10 , Mike Jones

Jack Draper is “incredibly proud” of reaching his first career grand slam quarter-final at the US Open – a feat pulled off with Vogue editor Anna Wintour watching in his box.

The 22-year-old destroyed Czech Tomas Machac in the fourth round to become the first British male quarter-finalist in New York since Andy Murray in 2016.

“To follow in Andy’s footsteps and make the quarter-finals here since he did it in 2016, it’s a big achievement for me,” he said after a 6-3, 6-1, 6-2 win. “I’m really, really proud of that achievement and hopefully I can do more.

Where Jack Draper ranks among final contenders at Flushing Meadows

17:00 , Mike Jones

Jannik Sinner: 6/5

Age: 23

Nationality: Italian

World ranking: 1

Sinner enters the US Open in good form, having won the Cincinnati Open, though the doping allegations that have surrounded him since that tournament have clearly affected him.

The Italian is the overwhelming favourite with the bookies, perhaps courtesy of his recent record against Medvedev as well as his potential semi-final match-up against either de Minaur or Draper. He has won his last nine matches, including in the round of 16 against Tommy Paul, and is the ‘form player’ at the tournament.

In Daniil Medvedev he faces the only player left in the tournament to have previously won it, but as the rankings show, Sinner is in better form as he continues to grow as a player, and will hope to put the Wimbledon defeat behind him as he looks to add to this year’s Australian Open title.

Where Jack Draper ranks among final contenders at Flushing Meadows

16:50 , Mike Jones

Daniil Medvedev: 4/1

Age: 28

Nationality: Russian

World ranking: 5

Medvedev has already won the US Open once in his career, beating Novak Djokovic in the 2021 final, so he has the experience at Flushing Meadows that the others maybe lack. In addition, he has had perhaps the easiest run to this stage, so fresh legs may play a part against Jannik Sinner.

The Russian has a winning record of 7-5 against the Italian, with their last meeting ending with a Medvedev win at the quarter-final stage at Wimbledon. However, Sinner dominated in their last hard-court match.

Medvedev has been here before and against even better opposition, so perhaps his previous experience will be key.

Where Jack Draper ranks among final contenders at Flushing Meadows

16:40 , Mike Jones

Taylor Fritz: 12/1

Age: 26

Nationality: American

World ranking: 12

Fritz has enjoyed a relatively successful 2024, reaching three Grand Slam quarter-finals as well as the semi-finals of the doubles at Paris 2024.

He’ll got past Alexander Zverev in the quarters winning 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 6-4 7-6 (7-3) on the hard courts to book a place in the final four where he takes on fellow American Frances Tiafoe.

Where Jack Draper ranks among final contenders at Flushing Meadows

16:30 , Mike Jones

Jack Draper: 14/1

Age: 22

Nationality: British

World ranking: 25

In reality, Draper is the lowest-ranked player still remaining in the tournament, though the bookies are offering odds as low as 14/1 for the Briton to win the competition, so he is far from the highest odds.

As mentioned above, this is the 22-year-old’s first Grand Slam quarter-final, and he has three previous losses against his opponent, Alex de Minaur. In addition, if he does progress against the Australian, he would face the winner of the match between Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev – probably the two toughest semi-final opponents you could ask for here.

Nevertheless, the Briton has one win over Sinner and one loss against Medvedev in their respective previous meetings, and with 2024 being his first injury-free year on the ATP Tour, you never know what the youngster is capable of serving up at Flushing Meadows.

16:20 , Mike Jones

Alex de Minaur: 14/1

Age: 25

Nationality: Australian

World ranking: 10

The Australian may be priced level with Jack Draper coming into their match, but the form sheet shows that he has all the tools to beat the young Briton when they meet, as proven by his superior record – three wins to Draper’s zero.

His best finish in any major tournament is this stage, so he will be desperate to advance to his first Grand Slam semi-final, and he has recovered well from an injury at Wimbledon.

Though Draper has yet to drop a set at Flushing meadows this year, he hasn’t faced a test as tough as de Minaur, and a reminder of the Australian’s ability may come as a shock to him come match day.

16:10 , Mike Jones

Frances Tiafoe: 25/1

Age: 26

Nationality: American

World ranking: 20

Tiafoe is seen as the underdog out of the remaining players, with prices varying between 20/1 and 28/1. The American faced ninth seed Grigor Dimitrov in his quarter-final, though the Bulgarian retired through injury.

Nevertheless, Tiafoe has home support behind him, and the relevance of this can never be overlooked, with that same support having helped him to the semi-finals in 2022 before he lost in five sets to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz. Tiafoe faces Fritz in the semi-finals, so he could be quietly confident having made it past Dimitrov.

Jack Draper is not ‘the next Andy Murray’ but he can emulate his friend and idol at US Open

16:00 , Mike Jones

Jack Draper and Andy Murray are both tennis players, but that’s just about where the likeness stops. At 22, Murray was still feeling his way into the spotlight after reaching the quarter-finals of Wimbledon, painted at the time as some kind of misanthrope, an implacable grump. By contrast Draper, who plays in his first grand slam quarter-final on Wednesday, is embracing the fame. “I quite enjoy being in front of the camera,” he told British Vogue while doing a cover shoot this summer. “If I’m looking good, that is.”

Draper posed in checked coats and leather jackets with curls of hair bouncing off his forehead like Danny Zuko, one of his many hairstyles. “I’ve done a buzzcut, a mohawk, a mullet…” he said. Meanwhile, Murray was recently asked what advice he’d give to his younger self. “Get a haircut,” he replied. “And get some clothes that fit.”

Twenty and out for Salisbury

15:45 , Mike Jones

Joe Salisbury’s US Open invincibility is now over after he lost in the men’s doubles.

Salisbury and American partner Rajeev Ram were on a 20-match winning streak that had seen them claim the 2021, 2022 and 2023 titles in New York.

Seeded third, they would have been hopeful of extending their run against American pair Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow on Grandstand but slipped to a surprise loss.

Jack Draper said he is “incredibly proud” of reaching his first career grand slam quarter-final at the US Open.

The 22-year-old destroyed Czech Tomas Machac in the fourth round to become the first British male quarter-finalist in New York since Andy Murray in 2016.

“I’m incredibly proud of that achievement,” he said after a 6-3 6-1 6-2 win,” he said.

“Obviously, it’s one of the biggest tournaments in the world.”

Aryna Sabalenka has inched closer to her first US Open title after breezing into the semi-final.

The world number two, who was beaten at Flushing Meadows last year by Coco Gauff, proved to be too much for Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng to handle in a repeat of the Australian Open final in Melbourne.

The Belarusian was victorious, getting the better of her Chinese opponent with a final score of 6-1 6-2.

Taylor Fritz on reaching semi-finals

15:00 , Mike Jones

“I feel amazing, I have had a lot of looks at quarter-finals over the last few years and today just felt different,” said American Taylor Fritz.

“I really felt like it was my time to go a step further. It’s only fitting I’m doing it here on this court at the Open in front of this crowd. I think the way I came out today was different because I just have been in this situation enough times.

“I think a question I got asked pretty much every time I lost in my quarter-finals was, ‘What’s it going to take to go further?’, and the answer I gave was always, just keep putting myself in these situations, and I’ll become more comfortable in these situations and get better.”

He added: “That’s definitely what happened now. The quarter-finals didn’t feel like, I don’t know, this big thing to me like it has been, I guess, in the past. It just felt like another tournament.”

Tiafoe ‘happy’ to get through to semi-finals

14:45 , Mike Jones

There is a real chance of a American winner in New York for the first time since 21 years ago, with France Tiafoe telling the press that beating Dimitrov due to an injury was “not the way he wanted to get through”.

“But, I’m happy to get through. Another semi-final here. Incredible,” he said.

“It was a really high-level match, I liked where I was at in the third regardless, but I didn’t want to end it like that.”

He added: “But you get to see me against another American so Friday is going to be one hell of a day.”

Grigor Dimitrov disappointed in injury

14:30 , Mike Jones

Dimitrov revealed he was disappointed with the outcome of his match against Frances Tiafoe, but his overall fitness is his priority.

He said: “I think it’s a combination from everything. Clearly my rehab process is a little bit slower than before. I felt a couple of things in prior the match.

“I think I have enough experience in myself to know where there’s no point to continue any further on that, and I think it’s just simple as that. Do I like doing it? No, but that’s that.”

Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz set up all American showdown

14:15 , Mike Jones

There will be an American in the men’s final of the US Open for the first time since 2006 after Frances Tiafoe set up a blockbuster of a semi-final against Taylor Fritz.

Hours after Fritz disposed of fourth seed Alexander Zverev in the quarter-final, Tiafoe followed suit by beating an injured Grigor Dimitrov 6-3 6-7 (5) 6-3 4-1.

It was not the way Tiafoe would have wanted to win as 34-year-old Dimitrov sustained an injury at the end of the third set.

Demon’s a fellow Brit

13:45 , Mike Jones

Jack Draper’s opponent Alex de Minaur says he is sometimes treated as an “honourary Brit”.

The Australian is the boyfriend of British number one Katie Boulter, but enjoyed taking out Dan Evans in round three.

Asked if he was almost British, he replied: “Depends on the day, depends who I’m playing, as well. But yeah, at times. At Wimbledon I was.”

Draper dreaming big

13:30 , Mike Jones

Jack Draper is daring to dream big in New York and is not ready to stop at the quarter-finals, where he meets Alex de Minaur.

By thrashing Tomas Machac on Monday, Draper became the first British man to reach the last eight since Andy Murray in 2016.

He has yet to drop a set in his opening four matches, with his form echoing that of fellow Briton Emma Raducanu, who claimed the US Open title in 2021.

Speaking on court after his fourth round win Jack Draper said: “I thought the last few times we played was a really decent battle. He was maybe a little off his best.

“I lost last year in the same round so it is nice to come back and go one better.

“I just need to keep going; I love playing here in New York, and I will just go through it again, I love playing on these big stages, I look forward to coming out again on Wednesday.”

Jack Draper booked his place in a first career grand slam quarter-final as he demolished Tomas Machac in the US Open fourth round.

Draper has always loved playing in New York, where the fast courts help his style, and he will now be dreaming big, having not dropped a set in his opening four matches.

His form is bringing back memories of Emma Raducanu, who famously flew under the radar to win the tournament in 2021, and Draper will be hoping to emulate her in the next week.

Draper’s run to the US Open quarter-finals

12:00 , Mike Jones

Jack Draper has secured a first grand slam quarter-final appearance at Flushing Meadows against Alex de Minaur.

The British number beat Botic van de Zandschulp, who knocked out Carlos Alcaraz, in the third round, and then beat Tomas Machac to reach the last eight.

The draw has opened up for those still in contention, with high seeds Novak Djokovic, Andrey Rublev and Casper Ruud all making early exits.

But De Minaur has got the better of Draper in all three previous meetings between the two players, including earlier this year at Acapulco on the same surface, where Draper retired in the third set at 4-0 down.

Good afternoon!

10:53 , Mike Jones

Welcome to The Independent’s coverage of tonight’s US Open action as Jack Draper attempts to reach the last-four at Flushing Meadows.

The British No.1 has been a delight during the competition, sweeping aside all four of his opponents in straight sets to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final for the very first time. His opponent today is Australia Alex de Minaur who is the No. 10 seed for the US Open and will no doubt prove to be Draper’s toughest contest so far.

De Minaur defeated his Australia compatriot Jordan Thompson in the previous round and is a dangerous, stylish player who has his sights on a major victory.

The players go head-to-head at the Arthur Ashe Stadium and are expected on court around 6pm BST but we’ll have all the build up and other results from the US Open beforehand so stick with us.

“Foaming agent” found in Grand Prairie water supply was result of a fire being put out, mayor says

GRAND PRAIRIE — Grand Prairie ISD announced schools will be closed Thursday after the city found a “foaming agent” in the water supply Tuesday evening. The foam resulted from a fire being extinguished, according to the mayor.

Water distribution will continue at Lone Star Park overnight and into Thursday.

On Wednesday, the school district and numerous city facilities were closed.

City officials held a press conference Wednesday afternoon to provide an update on the situation.

In a message sent to residents on Tuesday, the city advised everyone within city limits north of I-20 to stop using tap water, except for flushing toilets, until further notice.

Wednesday morning, Grand Prairie Mayor Ron Jensen said the foaming agent was found in the water after “a huge fire was fought Tuesday night.” He said the foaming agent got into the water system through a backflow event.

“It was an incident that we will learn from and move forward,” Jensen said.

According to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Grand Prairie received reports of foamy water, prompting the city to test samples from the water system. Jensen said the water is “slightly toxic, but nothing to be alarmed” of.

The commission was on site Wednesday to assist the city in monitoring the water supply. There was no estimate for how long the issue would take to resolve but Jensen said he hoped that by Wednesday evening, there would be a boil water notice.

Bottled water distribution continued Wednesday morning at Lone Star Park, with dozens of cars lined up to get a case. According to the city, the distribution will continue as long as supplies last.

Facility closures

All schools in Grand Prairie ISD are closed Wednesday, including campuses outside of the affected area. The district said the decision was out of an abundance of caution, and the regular schedule will resume on Thursday.

Facilities operated by the city’s Parks, Arts and Recreation Department are also closed Wednesday:

  • Kirby Creek Natatorium
  • Prairie Lakes Golf Course (including Crown’s)
  • Ruthe Jackson Center
  • Dalworth Recreation Center
  • Charley Taylor Recreation Center
  • Veterans Event Center
  • Park restrooms and water fountains in the affected area

Grand Prairie water warning

The city advised residents not to treat the water themselves and said that boiling, freezing, filtering, adding chlorine or other disinfectants, or letting water stand, will not make the water safe. Jensen said that if residents did shower or consume the water before being aware of the notice, they shouldn’t be concerned. There have been no incidents or calls to 911 regarding water-related illness or injury.

The city said to not consume the water in any way, including:

  • Drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, making beverages or ice
  • Pets or animals to drink
  • Dishwashing

The FBI responded to a CBS News Texas inquiry saying they have not been notified of any issues.

Chelsea v Crystal Palace LIVE: Result and final score from Premier League clash after Eberechi Eze levels

Marc Cucurella holds off Daichi Kamada (Chelsea FC via Getty Images)

A second-half equaliser by Eberechi Eze gave Crystal Palace their first point of the Premier League season as they secured a 1-1 draw away to Chelsea on Sunday, bouncing back from a poor start to grab a share of the spoils after a much-improved second half.

The home side broke the deadlock in the 25th minute after Palace defender Marc Guehi made an ill-advised raid forward and lost the ball. The Blues countered quickly, with Nicolas Jackson scoring from close range from a pass by Cole Palmer.

Outplayed for most of the opening 45 minutes, Palace eventually turned their fortunes around after the break and Eze equalised in the 53rd minute, picking up the rebound from Cheick Doucoure’s blocked shot and curling the ball beautifully into the net from outside the box.

Both sides had chances to grab a winner in the second half with Levi Colwill going close for Chelsea and Palace’s Daichi Kamada forcing a fine save, but despite just over eight minutes of stoppage time neither side could find another goal and the game ended in a stalemate.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

15:42

The spoils were shared at Stamford Bridge for the first time in this fixture since 1995 as Crystal Palace equalised to earn their first point of the season in a 1-1 draw with Chelsea. Jackson put the hosts ahead during a dominant first-half performance before a magnificent curling effort from Eze in the 53rd minute put Palace back on level terms. The shot from outside the box gave Eze the joint most goals (five) from outside the area in 2024, level with Phil Foden. Chelsea were left to rue missed chances as their early dominance meant they finished the game with an expected goals (xG) total of 2.27. Conversely, Palace proved clinical with the chance they had, finishing the match on 0.44xG. It leaves Chelsea just three points ahead of their opponents in 11th, while Palace move up to 16th after registering that first point.

Munoz breaks away from his Chelsea marker on the right side before switching play to Eze who is in space on the left just outside the box. His shot is blocked early but Palace are looking far more of a threat since their goal.

The first switch for Chelsea sees Joao Felix enter the field for fellow summer signing Neto.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

14:48

Crystal Palace attack once more and look far more spritely after that goal. Kamada sees his cross from the right blocked by Cucurella but Palace win the corner. It’s fired into the near post but cleared by Palmer.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

14:46

Palace come knocking. Munoz loops a cross in from the right of the box which Richards clips back into the mix to force a clearance from the Chelsea defence. It’s looking nervy.

And we are back underway as the hosts kick-off in the second-half.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

14:36

The teams are back out and ready to go for the second-half of action.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

14:32

Chelsea have looked the far stronger of the two sides at the break and duly lead 1-0 against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge. Jackson’s first goal of the Premier League season marks the difference between the two London clubs. Madueke and Palmer combined to provide a simple finish in the 25th minute, setting up a chance worth 0.97xG for Jackson’s goal. It means Palmer now has 15 assists for Chelsea in the Premier League, the most in Europe’s top five leagues since his debut in September 2023. He certainly contributed to Chelsea’s expected goals (xG) total of 1.77 at the break. Crystal Palace, on the other hand, have struggled to get into the game, finishing the half with just 0.07 xG. Oliver Glasner may look to his bench if he wants to see his side have a chance of picking up their first points of the season.

HALF-TIME: CHELSEA 1-0 CRYSTAL PALACE

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace have a free-kick from nearly 30 yards out. With just seconds remaining on the clock, Eze tries his luck but his attempt flies wide of the near post.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

Three minutes of added time announced in the first half at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

14:16

After receiving from Palmer on the edge of the box, Gusto takes aim from range. It is a low and powerful effort but appears to be blocked by his own teammate Madueke before it can even see a sight of goal.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

14:14

SAVED! Palmer sprays play out to Neto on the left who has the chance to put a cross in. Jackson is waiting in the box and does well to get his head to it and place his shot on target but the header is tame and Henderson can rise to catch easily.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

14:12

Crystal Palace are building momentum themselves with a spell of possession, stringing passes together in the centre of the pitch. Nothing comes of it, however.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

14:10

Neto plays in a cross from the left that causes problems for Henderson. It is low and straight at the near post but the Palace goalkeeper spills the initial block and has to scramble to collect the ball.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

14:06

As Chelsea now lead 1-0, the likely outcome of the match swings decisively in their favour. The hosts now have a win probability of 74% with Crystal Palace’s diminished to just 9%.

Yellow Card Wesley Tidjan Fofana

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

14:04

Chelsea are looking the far brighter side after that goal. They get forward again as Madueke beats Hughes for pace once more on the right. He cuts inside but drags his shot wide of the near post.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

14:02

There is a brief stoppage following the goal as Crystal Palace followed concussion protocol for Henderson, who received a knee to the head from his own teammate after scrambling to try and save the goal. He is deemed okay to carry on for now.

MADUEKE AGAIN!! Henderson pulls off a delightful save at point-blank range from Madueke’s header to keep the scores level at Stamford Bridge. After Palace’s flirt with getting back into the game, Chelsea have come back with a vengeance.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

13:56

SHOULD HAVE SCORED?! The hat-trick hero at Wolves Madueke receives a dinked ball over the top of the Palace defence and finds himself in behind with a sight of goal. Though under pressure Madueke has a clear space to shoot but pokes just wide of the post.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

13:54

While much of the opening 20 minutes have all gone Chelsea’s way, Crystal Palace are certainly feeling their way back into this one. That Wharton chance has given renewed impetus!

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

13:50

WHARTON GOES NEAR! It’s Palace’s first chance of the game but it’s probably also the best of the game. Lovely interplay on the right for the visitors creates space for Wharton on the edge of the box. He gets a shot away under pressure which forces Sanchez into a save low to his left but the English midfielder would have hoped to make better contact.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

13:48

Chelsea have been dominant so far and Crystal Palace will do well to hold them off for the entirety of the match if this momentum continues. The hosts currently boast a 70% share of possession in the match so far.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

13:46

Jackson gets away from the Palace defence and Hughes pulls him back to stop any further danger. He goes into the book for his troubles, however.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

13:46

CLOSE FOR PALMER! Chelsea’s superstar finds space to shoot on the edge of the box just right of centre and looks to curl a shot towards the far post with the inside of his foot. The crowd were expectant but the ball just sailed wide of the post.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

13:44

Kamada is lucky to get away with just a talking to as he commits three fouls in quick succession. The Chelsea players are not happy to see no card after Neto’s reprisal following Kamada’s latest trip.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

13:42

Chelsea are currently sending the majority of their attacks down the right side where Wharton is doing well to cover and stop them getting much further than just inside the Palace half.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

13:40

Tussles all over the pitch as players grapple with each other for the ball. Neto shows his frustrations by tripping Munoz from behind and is awarded the yellow card.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

13:38

Chelsea are building some momentum by maintaining possession with a string of quick passing. Wharton, however, does superbly to cut out the move as Chelsea look to surge forward and turn away from pressure to keep the ball.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

13:34

Chelsea win a free-kick out on the left as Neto is tripped. Palmer swings it into the box but it is headed away at the first time of asking by the Palace defence.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

13:34

Palace come flying out of the blocks to put pressure on the hosts early. It is perhaps a little too intense as Gillett gives a foul to Chelsea deep in their own half.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

13:32

Palace get us underway at Stamford Bridge!

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

13:32

The teams walk out onto the pitch at Stamford Bridge led by referee Jarred Gillett. Not long until we get underway here…

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

13:28

Will Eze finally get his goal? The Palace forward has been involved in more shots than any other player in the Premier League this season (16 – 12 shots, 4 chances created) but is yet to register a goal or assist.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

13:22

Crystal Palace are without new signing Chadi Riad who was substituted after 10 minutes in their midweek clash with Norwich due to a knee injury. Matheus Franca also remains absent for the south London side. Kamada returns to the starting line-up after featuring as a substitute in their 2-0 home defeat to West Ham.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

13:22

Chelsea are without the services of Reece James through both suspension and injury as well as Romeo Lavia (hamstring) and Moises Caicedo (ankle) through injury. Madueke earns another start for the hosts after his hat-trick last weekend, but Mudryk drops to the bench. Crystal Palace remain in search of their first win of the Premier League season after defeats to Brentford and West Ham so far this season. Just as they have struggled against sides from the capital this season, Palace have also had a torrid time in their history against Chelsea. The west Londoners have beaten Palace in 13 straight meetings dating back to March 2018. Only Manchester City (a current run of 14 against Bournemouth) have ever had a longer winning run against an opponent in English Football League history. Palace come into the match off the back of a 4-0 victory against Norwich City in their midweek League Cup fixture.

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

13:02

Chelsea will be hoping to continue their winning run after picking up their first three points of the season last weekend in a 6-2 victory away at Wolves. The west London club fell to opening day defeat to defending champions Manchester City but Noni Madueke’s hat-trick at Wolves brought them up to eighth place in the table on three points. A chaotic transfer window for the hosts means they are now without Conor Gallagher who scored a brace last time the sides met when Chelsea won 3-1 at Selhurst Park. Enzo Maresca’s side come into the match fresh from qualifying for the UEFA Conference League, winning 3-2 on aggregate despite falling to a disappointing 2-1 defeat in Switzerland on Thursday.

Newcastle v Tottenham LIVE: Result and final score from Premier League after Alexander Isak restores lead

Anthony Gordon battles with Destiny Udogie at St James’ Park (Reuters)

Alexander Isak scored the winner for Newcastle United with a simple tap-in as they weathered a storm from visiting Tottenham Hotspur to secure a 2-1 Premier League win in an entertaining game at St James’ Park on Sunday.

Harvey Barnes’ first-half opener for Newcastle was cancelled out by a Dan Burn own goal after the break as Spurs dominated the chances in the second period but spurned numerous openings and were beaten by a lightning-quick break from the hosts.

Joelinton’s defence-splitting pass was perfect for Jacob Murphy who, after drawing out keeper Guglielmo Vicario, laid the ball on a plate for Isak to secure the three points for manager Eddie Howe’s side, who remain unbeaten at home since January.

Adding to Newcastle’s delight, their Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali made his first league appearance since being handed a 10-month ban for a breach of betting rules and received a rapturous reception from the home supporters.

Newcastle beat Spurs again at St James’ Park, albeit in a little tighter fashion than before. Newcastle are now seven points from nine in an impressive start. The Magpies opened the scoring with Harvey Barnes just before the interval. Lloyd Kelly crossed aptly from the left and the midfielder scored in back-to-back Premier League starts for the first time since November 2022. After the break, this was cancelled out by a rather comical Dan Burn own goal, as Nick Pope failed to deal with Spurs’ offensive pressure. Tottenham kept that impetus until the last knockings, largely inspired by Brennan Johnson, however just couldn’t get the final touch. 12 minutes from the end of regulation time, Newcastle struck against the run of play to win. Jacob Murphy was played in, and squared unselfishly for Alexander Isak to seal Newcastle’s 26th Premier League win over Tottenham, their joint-most against a single opponent in the competition (also 26 v Aston Villa). The Toon have now won both of their first two home matches of a league season for the first time since 2009-10 in the Championship, and first time in the Premier League since 2000-01. Newcastle go fourth after this, with Spurs having to settle for 10th. The hosts ended the game with an xG of 1.57, while Spurs finished with 1.26. Thank you for joining us this afternoon, goodbye!

FULL-TIME: NEWCASTLE UNITED 2-1 TOTTENHAM

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:30

Just before that change, Johnson frustratingly fouls Guimaraes. It’s not looking good for Spurs as Newcastle look to see this one out.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:28

What looks like a final Newcastle change, Miguel Almiron comes on for Gordon.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:28

The free-kick was poor by Gordon. Vicario claims and Spurs start a counter which finds Johnson on the right. He flashes it across the box but no one’s there!

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:26

Guimaraes wins a late foul from Kulusevski on the left and look at the passion! He turns and celebrates to the home crowd. They need to push their boys home now. Final stretch.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:24

Spurs are staring down the barrel of yet another defeat at St James’ Park. We’re going to have five minutes of added time here.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:24

Werner is in behind on the right. The legs are tired, but Burn has timed a tackle on the right byline to perfection. It’s another corner. Bergvall takes and it’s cleared for a throw on the right.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:22

It’s a messy attack, but Newcastle don’t care. Isak’s scruffy deflected effort has given the hosts a late corner. The ball is right where they want it. Vicario came for the ball and slipped, yet Spurs are able to clear from the set-piece.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:18

Bentancur is on, and he’s straight in the book. Gordon looks to bring the ball away down the left wing and Bentancur’s tackle is a bit heavy on the old Everton favourite. He got the ball, but it’s more about the follow through.

15:10

Pope! What a save. He definitely knew where the cameras were, but that had to be made! Maddison was on the edge of the box and put it on his left, forcing Pope to dramatically tip away. From the resulting corner, Porro now strikes from range and Pope tips over again!

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:08

Newcastle have a free-kick floated over from the right-centre but it’s wasted. Tottenham counter and Johnson rushes in behind on the right. He crosses low and Guimaraes puts it behind for a corner. This is eventually cleared.

Guimaraes loses the ball to Maddison in midfield. He plays it to Son, and he finds Odobert. However, Krafth ushers the ball out for a goal-kick with his body. In the next phase, Burn botches a pass and Odobert debatably rushes it with the Newcastle defence all over the place. The recovery tackle comes in and it’s a corner on the left.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:02

After 316 days, Sandro Tonali is back in the Premier League. Longstaff makes way for the former Milan man.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:02

Maddison clips Guimaraes and picks up a rightful yellow card as he stopped the counter.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:02

Murphy forces a save from Vicario and Newcastle fans are up on their feet! It was a well-oiled, yet rare offensive foray from the Toon, and Joelinton found Gordon. He played in Murphy on the left and Vicario saved well at his near-post to put it behind for a corner.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:02

Substitution Lloyd Casius Kelly Lewis Kieran Hall

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:00

Johnson has warmed up really well so far. Murphy loses the ball for Newcastle and Kulusevski plays it to the former Forest winger. He goes for a deft low cross, yet Pope claims happily at his near post.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:58

Kelly is pressured on the left, as Johnson robs the ball. It’s eventually retrieved, yet Newcastle are having a bit of a wobble. Johnson then receives the ball again, and Kelly blocks for a Spurs corner on the right offensive side. It’s taken short and comes to nothing, ultimately.

Odobert how’s that not gone in? Kulusevski spreads the play out to Johnson on the right. A deflected cross from the former Forest man floats to the back post and Odobert fires over from ridiculously close range!

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:46

For some reason, Udogie is high up the pitch and comfortably offside. Maybe stick to what you know…

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:44

What impact can Johnson have on this game? Last season in the Premier League, only Leon Bailey (seven) was directly involved in more goals as a sub than Brennan Johnson (two goals, four assists).

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:42

Isak is played through and this time he’s on! Great tackle from Dragusin to recover!

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:42

Kulusevski plays smartly with Son, but can’t get the ball under his control and Newcastle can stab it away. Livramento breaks out down the right past Odobert before Isak is miles offside.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs start the second half, hoping for a better time than the first period. A lot to do, for Postecoglou’s now more offensively motivated side.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:38

Before the second half resumes, Sarr makes way for Brennan Johnson.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:36

Well, the visitors have it all to do in the second half. In fact, Tottenham have only won one of their last 29 Premier League away games when trailing at half-time (D7 L21). Postecoglou will be wanting to make a more impactful shift on Nick Pope’s goal, while being wary of the continued enterprise of Alexander Isak and Harvey Barnes. In the first half, Newcastle worked up to an xG of 0.49, while Spurs found their xG stunted at just 0.29. Discipline has been a point of interest in this one too. The hosts have received three yellow cards in the opening half, only the second time they have done so in a Premier League first-half under Eddie Howe.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:32

Newcastle lead Tottenham at the break here in the North East, thanks to a well-taken Harvey Barnes goal. We’ve seen a relatively open first half so far, and before the officials’ changed around due to Ian Hussin’s quad injury, Tottenham thought they had the lead. However, Cristian Romero’s 12th minute header was ruled out for offside. Following this, Pape Matar Sarr forced Nick Pope into work twice, yet the hosts stayed in it, and, somewhat against the run of play – took the lead in the 37th minute. Lloyd Kelly benefitted from Spurs switching off at a throw and he crossed nicely from the left for Barnes to side-foot home from the centre of the box. With the goal, Barnes has scored in back-to-back Premier League starts for the first time since November 2022 for Leicester City.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:24

HALF-TIME: NEWCASTLE UNITED 1-0 TOTTENHAM

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:24

Maddison is down after the challenge of Burn in the area. It’s initially given as a goal-kick. In truth, it did look as if Maddison got his foot stomped on inadvertently.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:22

It’s been open at times, this half, but now we’re seeing a bit of a scrappy end. Hopefully the second period goes up to the levels we saw before the officials’ stoppage.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:18

Isak nearly finds himself played through on the right, but can’t get a lanky leg onto the ball and Tottenham clear.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:16

The set-piece is wasted, and it turns out Longstaff was fouled in the Newcastle box to reset the play.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:14

Longstaff fouls Udogie after he gets caught on the wrong side. Now Spurs have a free-kick in a dangerous area.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:14

Postecoglou is undoubtedly unhappy about the simple concession of that goal. His side need to play up, or can expect a talking to at the break!

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:06

Yellow Card Pape Matar Sarr

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:04

Isak makes interesting inroads. It flicks off a Spurs body and now there will be a corner on the left, the seventh of the game in total. Newcastle’s fourth corner of the match is punched by Vicario and eventually cleared

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:02

Newcastle can’t get Spurs pressure away after the set-pieces. It comes to Porro, and he slams one – yet it swirls high of Pope’s goal.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:02

Sarr has another go as Spurs keep building. He curls one to the right side of the goal, and Pope makes a routine stop. Corner on the right.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:00

Spurs are starting to grow in confidence. Maddison is being brought onto the ball a bit more. After the stoppage with the officials, Newcastle are sitting a little deeper.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:00

Yellow Card Lloyd Casius Kelly

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:00

Sarr smashes one low from range and Pope gets down to the left centre of his goal. It ricochets kindly out of danger. That was a sweet strike.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:56

Oderbert goes for a run at his marker on the right. Hopes are high for the Burnley man, yet his shot on Pope’s goal flies comfortably over.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:56

After a brief interval in play, with a new lino, we’re back in action.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:56

It looks like we’re swapping officials here. Linesman Ian Hussin’s quad looks to have gone. He trades places with fourth official Darren Bond.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:50

The corner from Gordon comes in. Joelinton is in there and Vicario fails to punch with confidence. Krafth then shoots and it’s deflected behind for another corner on the left. Lloyd heads over from close range. He just got under the delivery.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:48

Oderbert crosses from the right, but it’s an easy claim for Pope. Up the other end, Gordon latches on to a forward pass down the right. Romero flies back and puts in an excellent challenge for a Newcastle corner on the right.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:46

Romero heads home! But, it’s offside! The ball from the right was superb, and the header powerful through Pope’s hand, yet the lino’s flag stops Spurs’ celebrations immediately.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:44

Botman cuts out a great pass through the Newcastle back line. He then punts it long to Gordon on the right central channel, who touches it inside and plays it across to Barnes on the left. The former Leicester man cuts back on his right and wraps one, yet it’s just wide of the top-right corner! Close!

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:42

Since the beginning of last season Tottenham have lost five of their 11 Premier League games without Micky van de Ven (W5 D1) , just two fewer defeats than across the 29 league matches he’s been involved in (W16 D6 L7). Can Dragusin and co. step up?

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:38

The corner is long, yet in the next phase, Isak dispossesses Son and crosses from the right, hitting the bar!

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:38

Barnes darts in on the left and Dragusin, the stand-in for the injured Van de Ven, tracks back brilliantly to slide it behind for a corner on the left.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:38

Barnes is making just his eighth Premier League start for Newcastle (16 sub apps). He notably did score on his most recent start versus Brentford in May.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:36

Barnes and Joelinton link up smartly on the left. The Brazilian puts in a low cross, yet Vicario claims with ease. Positive start.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:36

Guimaraes floats in an early free-kick from the centre of the park. Isak tries to bring it down, yet can’t get it properly under control and Spurs clear.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:34

Away we go! This game has never seen a league 0-0, hopefully this goal-centric trend continues!

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:34

The saxaphone rings out at St. James’ Park, and after a brief chat with referee Robert Jones, it seems the hosts will get us under way.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:32

The players are making their way out to the pitch and the atmosphere is building here. There’s a superb homage to Sandro Tonali reading ‘Midfield Maestro From Milano’. He returns after his gambling ban. Since arriving on Tyneside, Tonali has only played 13 times, yet his quality has already made him a firm favourite in Newcastle. Buoyed on by the Wednesday night Carabao Cup win, in which the Italian featured, Newcastle will be looking for a repeat of the drubbing they subjected Spurs to last season.

13:28

Tottenham change two of the side that started in the 4-0 thrashing of Everton as Radu Dragusin and Pape Sarr come in for Micky van de Ven and Brennan Johnson. Johnson is among the substitutes, but Van de Ven is not in the squad, while forwards Dominic Solanke and Richarlison are both absent through injury. With his inclusion, Wilson Odobert is the first teenager to start back-to-back Premier League games for Tottenham since Ryan Sessegnon on New Year’s Day 2020.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:22

TOTTENHAM SUBSTITUTES: Fraser Forster, Archie Gray, Ben Davies, Djed Spence, Alfie Devine, Lucas Bergvall, Rodrigo Bentancur, Brennan Johnson, Timo Werner.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:22

TOTTENHAM (4-3-3): Guglielmo Vicario; Destiny Udogie, Radu Dragusin, Cristian Romero, Pedro Porro; James Maddison, Yves Bissouma, Pape Sarr; Wilson Odobert, Son Heung-Min, Dejan Kulusevski.

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:22

Newcastle make one change from their last Premier League match as Harvey Barnes comes in for Jacob Murphy, who drops to the bench. Midfielder Sandro Tonali played against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday. That was his first appearance since a 10-month ban for breaching betting regulations, he is also among the substitutes. Joe Willock is out with a thigh injury. Defender Fabian Schar serves the final game of a three-match suspension.

Chaos erupted at the Michigan State Fair in Novi late Saturday evening as a shooting in the parking lot left a 14-year-old dead and another 14-year-old injured.

“The entire Michigan State Fair family grieves for the loss of such a young life and for all those affected,” a representative of the Michigan State Fair said in a prepared statement posted on the fair’s website.

The shooting occurred at 9:56 p.m., just before the fair was to close, in a parking lot southwest of the Suburban Collection Showplace, where the fair is held, and not inside the fairgrounds. According to police, the incident appears to have been “targeted.” Two 14-year-old boys were shot and taken via ambulance to a nearby hospital where one died from his injuries. The other remains in stable condition.

The 14-year-olds had taken two Ubers to the fair: One from Detroit to Farmington Hills and another with friends from Farmington Hills to the fair itself, police said.

“It appears this incident may have stemmed from an argument throughout the week which occurred in other communities that carried over to Saturday night and their arrival at the Fair parking lot,” Novi police said in a press release.

“The Novi Police Department responded to and is currently investigating an isolated incident at the Michigan State Fair,” Novi Police Chief Erick Zinser said in a prepared statement posted on the department’s X account shortly after midnight Sunday. “Two victims were transported to a local hospital; one passed away from injuries. There is no threat to the community.”

Melissa Hill, owner of Bookish Daydreams, has a vendor booth at the fair and described the scene as “utter chaos.”

She said it happened approximately five to 10 minutes before the fair was to close for the evening. Hill said that her fellow vendors said they heard gunshots and she then heard that there was an active shooter at the fair. She said she saw members of a police SWAT team running past her booth inside the Suburban Collection Showplace with rifles and instinctively pulled her young son back.

“People were running everywhere and throwing their plates. Food was all over the ground. There were drinks spilled everywhere; it was chaos,” Hill said.

She said she had never seen so many police in one place before.

According to police, this was because the initial police radio traffic call came out as “an active shooter,” which prompted a very heavy police response from several surrounding law enforcement agencies.

Police were investigating at the scene until approximately 4 a.m. Sunday.

The investigation remains ongoing. Police had not much information in the way of a suspect description available. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the Novi Police Department at (248) 348-7100.

As a result of the shooting, the State Fair has increased its safety measures and cut back its evening hours. There will also be an increased police presence at the event.

“The Michigan State Fair and community law enforcement partners are committed to the safety of the guests and participants. Safety is the top priority and the State Fair had increased safety measures in place including weapons detection systems and increased police presence onsite,” a fair representative said in the prepared statement on its website. “After review of the incident with law enforcement officials, community leaders, and the Michigan State Fair operations team and Executive Committee, the Michigan State Fair will continue to operate with even further additional police presence and important adjustments to the closing hours and policies.”

The fair will close at 7 p.m. Sunday and Monday, which is three hours earlier than previously scheduled on Sunday and two hours earlier than previously scheduled on Monday. The box office will close at 6 p.m. All attendees under the age of 18 must now be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to enter the fair.

“The Michigan State Fair is continuing this effort on behalf of the vital agricultural and livestock community and to honor and carry on the commitment to revive the great tradition of the Michigan State Fair,” the representative said in the posted statement.

Ticket refunds will be available for those who desire one and have not yet scanned their ticket. To get a refund, contact the fair office.

Wolves vs Chelsea LIVE: Premier League result and final score as Noni Madueke hits hat-trick in goalfest

(Getty Images)

Chelsea showed their attacking potential to give Enzo Maresca a first-ever top-flight win as a manager, as they swamped a defensively-dreadful Wolves to win 6-2 in the Premier League.

An even first half saw the scoring go back and forth, Nicolas Jackson’s early opener cancelled out by Matheus Cunha before Cole Palmer and Jorgen Strand Larsen swapped strikes right before the break.

But after the restart it was all about the blues’ attack, with Noni Madueke scoring a hat-trick – all set up by Palmer – and sub Joao Felix adding a late sixth on his second debut for the club to give the Maresca era a big first league win and plenty of talking points. For Wolves, a fast improvement is needed after they disappeared entirely, leading to a mostly empty stadium by the final whistle.

Follow all the reaction from Wolves vs Chelsea in the blog below

FT – Wolves 2-6 Chelsea

At the other end of the scale, while the defensive unit must be questioned, Jose Sa in particular was very poor in goal. Nothing he could do about some, like Felix’s finish, but conceding six from eight shots on target isn’t a great look – three went through or straight past him.

Wolves actually had a better xG than Chelsea for the game, believe it or not: 1.92 – 1.56.

Wasn’t anything like a close finish to the actual scoreline, however.

FT – Wolves 2-6 Chelsea

16:23 , Karl Matchett

For Wolves, there were positives to pick out in individuals, but certainly not defensively or in that team performance.

In attack, Cunha was typically excellent but Jorgen Strand Larsen served notice he’ll be vital for them if he’s fit and given service – lots of work rate, created a couple of openings, scored with a deft touch and kept the Chelsea defence guessing.

Lemina kept up his level, too.

FT – Wolves 2-6 Chelsea

16:12 , Karl Matchett

Madueke will get the headlines for his treble but Cole Palmer produced the goods today too – not a non-stop performance for him but one beautiful goal and three assists – all for Madueke – clearly mark him out as a key player for Maresca once more.

Ideal for Maresca in attack too, with both starter and sub up front scoring, Jackson and Felix.

FT – Wolves 2-6 Chelsea

16:05 , Karl Matchett

One or two boos as the full time whistle goes, but in truth most of the Wolves fans have either gone or gone quiet long ago.

Madueke hands his jersey to an elderly fan in the crowd, hops back over the barriers and off he goes in search of the matchball – he scored a hat-trick to clinch the points.

90+6’ – Wolves 2-6 Chelsea

16:03 , Karl Matchett

So much space in front of the Wolves defence – the running has stopped and so have the challenges.

Felix turns again and drives on for 15 yards, but picks Neto instead of Madueke for the pass and it’s intercepted.

Much to ponder for Wolves before their next match, against Burnley in the League Cup in midweek and then Forest next week in the league.

90+2’ – Wolves 2-6 Chelsea

15:57 , Karl Matchett

Into stoppage time we go and we’ll have eight minutes for unknown reasons. Lots of goals and subs sure, though the first 30 seconds of celebration time aren’t supposed to be added on any more.

Madueke rockets another shot wide from the edge of the box, as Doyle comes on as a late Wolves sub.

It’s all but done now here, pending any more late disasterclasses at the back for the home team.

88’ – Wolves 2-6 Chelsea

15:54 , Karl Matchett

Just a couple of minutes left for Wolves to endure – plenty of their fans have already departed, of course.

Chelsea will be thinking they are in a good spot to take on Servette in that second leg of the Conference qualifier in midweek, before then hosting Crystal Palace next weekend.

Meanwhile Nkunku and Felix link on the edge of the box but the latter’s shot is deflected over.

84’ – Wolves 2-6 Chelsea

15:50 , Karl Matchett

Veiga and Nkunku on for Cucurella and Palmer in another double sub for Maresca.

How many positives can the Chelsea boss take from today? They certainly controlled more of the second half but it felt like Wolves stepped off, more than Chelsea forced them to.

This has been desperate defensive work from the hosts all the same, but the visitors were equally poor in their own third of the pitch first half.

Still, score six every week and you won’t lose too many…

GOAL! 80’ – Wolves 2-6 Chelsea

15:47 , Karl Matchett

Incredible, another goal – and Joao Felix has scored on his second debut!

A brilliant break down the left sees Neto surging into space behind the defence, he cuts it back right into the path of Felix who has run from deep and his first-time finish is controlled and clinical, side-footed hard past Sa and in for 6-2.

What a scoreline.

78’ – Wolves 2-5 Chelsea

15:45 , Karl Matchett

Wow, what a finish – but it won’t count. A free-kick is clipped to Toti again and his header eventually lands to Lemina on the edge of the box – a half-volley scrapes off Dewsbury-Hall and in for 5-3…except the flag is up and Toti was offside from the initial set piece.

Chelsea still have a three goal lead.

74’ – Wolves 2-5 Chelsea

15:41 , Karl Matchett

Caicedo initially continued after treatment but he’s down again now and will be replaced. Dewsbury-Hall comes on for him as Maresca has a word with Cucurella, presumably to keep his head after being booked.

A good away win this, once they see it out.

70’ – Wolves 2-5 Chelsea

15:37 , Karl Matchett

Caicedo is down and needing attention after a big challenge from Mosquera – Chelsea players aren’t happy with the tackle and Cucurella gets right in his face, a few players quickly again coming together to clash for about the third time today.

Mosquera and Cucurella both booked.

66’ – Wolves 2-5 Chelsea

15:34 , Karl Matchett

Well, if Maresca’s Chelsea side is just to be a “we’ll score more than you” type of team, they’ll be well worth watching this term.

Defensively they looked extremely vulnerable in the first half, but in attack Wolves haven’t come close to stopping them.

Joao Felix is coming on for Jackson – a second debut following his earlier loan.

Wolves swap Dawson, Sarabia and Rodrigo Gomes for Ait-Nouri, Cunha and Bellegarde.

GOAL! 62’ – Wolves 2-5 Chelsea

15:31 , Karl Matchett

Could be anything, this. Chelsea under pressure but two passes get them past Wolves’ midfield, Palmer runs in down the right channel and lashes a shot in near post – strikes the outside of the woodwork and wide, he should have passed across to Madueke.

It doesn’t matter though because Palmer immediately has another opportunity this time does roll in Madueke…and he buries his hattrick!

5-2 to Chelsea!

GOAL! 58’ – Wolves 2-4 Chelsea

15:25 , Karl Matchett

And that might be enough for the Blues! Cole Palmer finds space, frees Madueke on the overlap and the right winger drills one through the legs of Sa, who has been beaten by everything today.

It’s 4-2 to Chelsea and they have a two-goal lead for the first time today.

54’ – Wolves 2-3 Chelsea

15:23 , Karl Matchett

Colwill drives past Ait-Nouri who takes him down – the left-back is on a yellow card, remember.

Lemina drills one over the bar from range for Wolves, minutes after the home crowd berate Hwang for moving out of a challenge with Neto.

GOAL! 49’ – Wolves 2-3 Chelsea

15:15 , Karl Matchett

What is going on in this game! Out of nothing again, Chelsea just switch it left to right, Madueke drifts in and shoots – it hits Ait-Nouri and bounces past Sa into the far corner, Chelsea ahead for a third time!

48’ – Wolves 2-2 Chelsea

15:14 , Karl Matchett

Enzo Fernandez robbed of the ball once more – he hasn’t had a great game so far. Wolves looking to keep the pressure on in the middle of the park, where Gomes and Lemina have had the upper hand so far.

46’ – Wolves 2-2 Chelsea

15:12 , Karl Matchett

Back underway. Sub for Chelsea at the break now as Pedro Neto is on for Mudryk. He’s straight into the action against his old team but Mosquera is there to fend him off.

15:03 , Karl Matchett

Well, a lot to unpack there:

Nicolas Jackson headed in the opener with basically the first attack of the game, a corner after two minutes.

The Blues were stronger in that early period but Wolves came back into it, had one disallowed and missed a couple of other chances – then Matheus Cunha barrelled in the equaliser after a great Ait-Nouri run.

It looked like that would be it for the first half as both spurned chances, but a long Sanchez pass found Jackson, who hooked one on for Cole Palmer – and he produced a great lob to put Chelsea back ahead.

In stoppage time at the end of the half, though, Wolves were level once more as Jorgen Strand Larsen stretched out a boot to make it 2-2 from a Toni knock-down.

HT: Wolves 2-2 Chelsea

14:57 , Karl Matchett

A wild half comes to a close with a mid-air crash but Gomes and Jackson are fine after some treatment.

Four goals, a whole host of other chances and plenty of very questionable defensive work.

Both managers might want a word to tighten things up!

GOAL! 45+6’ – Wolves 2-2 Chelsea

14:53 , Karl Matchett

…and would you believe it, we’re all square again!

A clipped ball to the far post sees Toti nod across the six-yard box, no Chelsea defender is faced the right way to clear and Strand Larsen is there to reach out a big right leg and divert it past Sanchez and in!

It’s back to all square, 2-2 before the break.

45+4’ – Wolves 1-2 Chelsea

14:51 , Karl Matchett

Well inside stoppage time – elsewhere Bournemouth lead Newcastle. You can follow that in our other live blog running alongside this one.

No great push from Wolves to get themselves back on level terms and they look a bit deflated after conceding that soft second goal.

Madueke fouls Cunha about eight yards outside the box and there’s a final chance to deliver for the hosts before the break…

GOAL! 45’ – Wolves 1-2 Chelsea

14:47 , Karl Matchett

Scrap all of that!!

Wolves’ free-kick ends up wide, Chelsesa launch it forward, Jackson flicks it on and Palmer runs in to clip a lobbed finish, first time, over Sa and into the net from 25 yards!

Fantastic finish and timing from the attacking midfielder but how have Wolves switched off like that before the break, Toti was the only one back!

Six minutes added on.

44’ – Wolves 1-1 Chelsea

14:45 , Karl Matchett

Final minutes before the break and it was so close a brilliant goal with the move of the game! Joao Gomes drags Wolves upfield once more and Lemina then splits the defence with a take-on and a pass, the cut-back finds Cunha and his strike is deflected past Sanchez and onto the crossbar by Colwill!

Almost brilliant but Chelsea escape and will probably be glad to get into the dressing rooms level, despite that fast start they made. Cole Palmer is then next into the book for berating the ref after a foul.

40’ – Wolves 1-1 Chelsea

14:41 , Karl Matchett

A total mix-up between Toti and Sa as a bouncing ball is left by both, then gone for by both – it bounces off the keeper, hits the onrushing Jackson on the heel and rolls away to safety. Massive let-off for Wolves.

Neto – and Joao Felix – go out for a warm-up with a few minutes left before the break. Interesting to see what reception he gets if the ex-Wolves man comes on.

Five minutes until the interval. Gusto is booked now for tripping Cunha who was off on a counter – bit of a dramatic fall but it was certainly card-worthy for stopping the attack in any case.

36’ – Wolves 1-1 Chelsea

14:37 , Karl Matchett

Yellow card for Ait-Nouri now and a shooting chance from the free-kick for Cole Palmer, who has been a little quiet in the last 15 minutes. Straight into the wall. Strand Larsen leaps and heads it away, goes down, shakes it off and gets on with it.

Think they love him here already, plenty of chasing, challenging and genuinely smart hard work.

32’ – Wolves 1-1 Chelsea

14:34 , Karl Matchett

Ait-Nouri pings a brilliant cross from the left this time and it’s just a yard ahead of Larsen, who is stretching in the middle to reach it.

Chelsea struggling to match their own early intensity and in this entire half it has seemed both teams could score every time they reach the penalty box.

Another corner is swung in from the right but the blues this time repel the danger – and the second delivery.

GOAL! 27’ – Wolves 1-1 Chelsea

14:30 , Karl Matchett

It has been coming…and now Wolves are level! Ait-Nouri strides forward after winning the ball, beats Fernandez twice and flicks a reverse pass to Cunha who blazes a finish high and central past Sanchez and in for 1-1!

Great run from the left-back, fine finish.

Yet again after the goal goes in, there’s a clash between both sets of players – unclear if definitely that’s Cunha saying something to Jackson because of what he said after the first goal, but it looks like it.

The ref has a word with all involved and on we go.

24’ – Wolves 0-1 Chelsea

14:26 , Karl Matchett

Lemina is the new Wolves captain and he makes a brilliant recovery challenge on Mudryk here, sliding back as the Ukrainian threatens to sprint away into the box.

Doherty is down now and needing some attention for Wolves – they are without Nelson Semedo through suspension at right-back, remember.

20’ – Wolves 0-1 Chelsea

14:21 , Karl Matchett

Crazy match! Shouldn’t really still be 1-0. Chelsea spurn another chance with a shot from Madueke causing problems but Palmer and Jackson unable to get control to shoot afterwards.

Then it’s back down the other end and Larsen crosses low again for Cunha at the far post – this time he pokes wide on the stretch!

Sa needs a bit of attention with a possible hamstring issue but there’s a bit of treatment and on he goes.

17’ – Wolves 0-1 Chelsea

14:18 , Karl Matchett

Nobody is defending in this game! Jackson breaks through behind the defence and is in on goal before Mosquera makes a great recovery run and challenge, then 10 seconds later Larsen is through, squares for Cunha and he finishes beyond Sanchez – but the offside flag is up against the new addition.

VAR confirms it and we stay at 0-1.

14’ – Wolves 0-1 Chelsea

14:17 , Karl Matchett

Cunha runs in behind the defence this time and slides for a ball which is just overhit – Sanchez is out quickly and deflects it away bravely, both players colliding but fine to get up and continue.

Now Wolves are just showing their teeth and getting a few passes together in the final third finally.

Cucurella loses out but a combination of Fofana and Gusto clears the latest moment of danger. Now it’s Chelsea who need to wake up and find some control.

10’ – Wolves 0-1 Chelsea

14:12 , Karl Matchett

Very close to an equaliser from this corner too – the right-footed delivery from Cunha is met by Mosquera with a giant leap and powerful header, but his effort flies just past the post instead of inside it.

Strand Larsen is next to try running at the Chelsea defence but he’s closed out by Fofana – the on-loan attacker tries to get the crowd going, since none of the football has so far.

6’ – Wolves 0-1 Chelsea

14:10 , Karl Matchett

The home side still haven’t really got to grips with Chelsea and have hardly had a spell of possession so far.

Chelsea looking to press their early advantage and make the most of that brilliant start.

Now a first ball out to the left for Bellegarde to race at the defence sees Wolves win a corner – good recovery from Gusto to track back and make the challenge.

GOAL! 2’ – Wolves 0-1 Chelsea

14:05 , Karl Matchett

And from the resulting set piece, the first goal of the game! Palmer’s corner comes in and is flicked on by Cunha, but totally unmarked at the far post is Nicolas Jackson who rises and buries a header past Sa and in!

Not even two minutes on the clock and the visitors are in front.

A bit of a skirmish in the aftermath of the goal between two sets of players but Wolves are behind and pay the price for that very slow start!

1’ – Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

14:03 , Karl Matchett

First opening for the visitors as Noni Madueke skips inside and shoots low – Sa forced into a good save! Wolves need to wake up, they look sluggish and a bit off the early pace.

0’ – Wolves 0-0 Chelsea

14:02 , Karl Matchett

We are underway! Chelsea get us kicked off after a minute’s applause.

Two clubs who lost last weekend, both hopeful of far more in the season to come.

Cole Palmer lining up centrally for the Blues, just off the striker – how much havoc can he cause?

Not sure about the relevance given the change-around on and off the pitch at Chelsea, but these two sides last met in early February at Stamford Bridge…and Wolves won 4-2.

Cole Palmer and Thiago Silva scored for the hosts, but Matheus Cunha hit a hattrick and Axel Disasi scored an own goal to give O’Neil’s side the points.

That made it a double for the campaign following a 2-1 win at Molineux, with Mario Lemina and Matt Doherty scoring before a very late Christopher Nkunku consolation.

With the transfer deadline less than a week away now, the new Chelsea head coach has made it clear to his bosses that there are a group of players he doesn’t want involved…and won’t have in his training sessions.

“At the moment, with the squad that we have, I am working with 22, 23 or 21 players – not with the 42 players, otherwise it is impossible,” Maresca said.

“It is impossible for any manager in the world to make a session with 45 players. It’s impossible. You cannot do that.

“I just communicate [to the sporting directors] the players that I like and the players I don’t like and because there is one week […] left of the transfer window, hopefully we can find solutions for all of them.

“When you find solutions, everyone is happy. When you don’t find a solution, then you can create some problems.”

Time running down for a whole host of would-be starters and even internationals in some cases…

Pedro Neto is of course involved for Chelsea against his former club – he’s sub once more, but the forward is likely to feature after a handful of minutes off the bench against Man City last weekend, then a start and nearly an hour of gametime in midweek.

Chelsea beat Servette 2-0 in a Conference League qualifier, Neto managing one shot and 29 touches in his 57 minutes of action.

The 24-year-old struggled again with injury last term but still scored two and assisted nine in just over 1,500 minutes for Wolves.

Not that we should ever read too much into preseason results, but Wolves beat West Ham and lost to Crystal Palace this summer – while also beating RB Leipzig and losing to Rayo Vallecano.

A very mixed bag, to say the least.

Their 2-0 defeat to Arsenal on the opening weekend of the Premier League season was far from too damaging, given it was away from home, but they’ll certainly want to give a good account today on home soil and not start the campaign with successive defeats.

Wolves vs Chelsea live – latest updates

13:20 , Karl Matchett

Wolves are without the suspended Nelson Semedo and striker Sasa Kalajdzic – who is still on their books but who suffered a third ACL injury last term and is still in rehab.

For Chelsea, Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell are of course the high-profile casualties of Enzo Maresca’s decisions over his squad this season, but Axel Disasi, Reece James and Djordje Petrovic are others not even involved in the squad, for a variety of reasons.

A lot of work to do behind the scenes to trim that squad…and salary bill.

Why isn’t Wolves v Chelsea on TV?

13:14 , Karl Matchett

Wolves and Chelsea will bid to bounce back from opening weekend defeats as the two sides meet at Molineux.

Both clubs fell to 2-0 defeats to last year’s Premier League title chasers, with Gary O’Neil’s side beaten by Arsenal and Chelsea unable to overcome the off-field chaos at the club against Manchester City.

Enzo Maresca has since secured his first competitive victory as manager of the London club in the first leg of their Conference League play-off tie against Servette, though his pre-match comments about his bloated squad at Stamford Bridge raised eyebrows.

Chelsea’s European business forced the rescheduling of this fixture from Saturday to Sunday, but it will not be shown live on television in the United Kingdom.

Here’s everything you need to know:

Why isn’t Wolves v Chelsea on TV?

Chelsea could still raise a fortune this summer

13:07 , Karl Matchett

Joao Felix is in the door, Conor Gallagher has gone – but there’s still plenty more transfer business which could be done by Chelsea yet, particularly with regards to outgoing links.

There are a handful here of which still could get done before deadline day…

Enzo Maresca heavily praised Noni Madueke after that Conference League play-off first leg win, so a start always felt a possibility here. More of a surprise, though, is the inclusion of Mykhailo Mudryk – for all of his natural gifts, the Ukraine winger continues to struggle for consistency.

“We’re going to try to help him to change,” said Maresca of Mudryk on Thursday. “We’re going to bring him the ball in the last third, and when he’s there he has to take the right decisions.

“The mistakes he makes are not technical, they are about choices. It’s about decision making. Hopefully we can help him and we can improve that.”

Enzo Maresca wants Noni Madueke to stay at Chelsea after goal against Servette

Wolves vs Chelsea team news

12:51 , Harry Latham-Coyle

There is no Romeo Lavia in the Chelsea squad, which is presumably related to injury given the midfielder was one of their best against Manchester City.

Team news – Chelsea

Enzo Maresca, meanwhile, rewards Noni Madueke with a start after his goalscoring cameo against Servette. Mykhailo Mudryk also earns an opportunity on the wing with Cole Palmer, it would seem, moving into a central role.

Joao Felix is on the bench.

Chelsea XI: Sanchez; Gusto, Fofana, Colwill, Cucurella; Caicedo, Fernandez; Madueke, Palmer, Mudryk; Jackson.

Team news – Wolves

12:47 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Let’s start with the hosts’ line-up, though, as Gary O’Neil makes a single change to his Wolves side – Matheus Cunha is promoted after featuring off the bench against Arsenal.

Wolves XI: Sa; Doherty, Mosquera, Toti, Ait-Nouri; Bellegarde, Lemina, Gomes; Cunha, Larsen, Hwang.

Wolves boss Gary O’Neil insisted on Friday it was “pretty much impossible” to predict the Chelsea line-up they will face this afternoon.

Chelsea have brought in 10 new players since new boss Enzo Maresca walked through the door at Stamford Bridge, including former Wolves talisman Pedro Neto.

Neto faces a quick return to Molineux on Sunday when he revisits Wolves with his new club after making his Premier League debut in their defeat to Manchester City last week.

O’Neil was interested to see whether Neto would be included to play in front of the fans that used to sing his name after he also appeared in Chelsea Europa Conference League qualifying victory over Servette on Thursday night.

He told a press conference: “It’ll be interesting to see what they do with him.

“Obviously he played yesterday, we’ll see whether he can go again on the weekend and start again on the Sunday.

“It’s pretty much impossible for me to predict the Chelsea line-up but, there are so many there.

“We know some that definitely won’t be in the team but figuring out what they’re going to do will be tough.

“We will try and give the best account of ourselves and try start the Premier League season at home with a win, which will be huge for us.”

Enzo Maresca has advised Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell that they will have to leave Chelsea to play regular football, but insisted that his bloated squad was “not a mess”.

The London club secured their latest summer signing on Wednesday as Joao Felix sealed a return to Stamford Bridge, with Conor Gallagher completing a move the other way to Atletico Madrid.

It now leaves the club looking to offload perhaps as many as a dozen players before the end of the transfer window as they try to whittle down their senior playing group.

One player who will not be involved today is Raheem Sterling, who has been training on his own since last week after Chelsea made it clear that the England international is not part of Enzo Maresca’s plans.

Chelsea have already left Sterling out of their two matchday squads this year.

Gary O’Neil confirmed on Friday that Wolves have no fresh injury concerns, with Matheus Cunha ready for “more minutes” after appearing off the bench against Arsenal. Nelson Semedo featured for the club’s U21s on Friday as he builds up his fitness while suspended.

Enzo Maresca made nine changes for the Conference League play-off win over Servette, but is likely to return to a similar side to the one beaten by Manchester City. Reece James remains suspended and is also dealing with a hamstring issue; Ben Chiwell and Raheem Sterling are among those training away from the first-team squad having been told they are surplus to requirements.

The Blues are still looking to get off the mark in the Premier League following an opening-day defeat to Manchester City, while some of their fans remain aggrieved at the signing of home favourites like Conor Gallagher.

Enzo Maresca is still finalising his first-team squad, but some players, including Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell have already been told they are not part of the new manager’s plans this season.
