Tatum scores 37 points and Celtics hold to beat stubborn Pistons 124-118

(AP) — Jayson Tatum scored six of his 37 points in the final 65 seconds and the Boston Celtics held on for a 124-118 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Saturday night.

The Celtics led by as many as 23 points in the first half, but trailed for much of the third quarter. Jrue Holiday tied the game with back-to-back 3-pointers, and Tatum put the Celtics up 116-114 by hitting a pair of free throws with 1:05 left.

The Pistons missed two shots on the ensuing possession and Tatum’s jumper made it 118-114 with 29 seconds left.

Malik Beasley’s 3-pointer pulled Detroit within one, but Derrick White hit two free throws and Boston clinched the game from the line.

Jaylen Brown had 24 points and 10 rebounds for Boston. Jaden Ivey had 26 points for Detroit while Cade Cunningham finished with 21 points and 10 assists.

Takeaways

Celtics: Boston started the game looking like they would break the NBA record of 29 3-pointers they tied on Tuesday against the Knicks. They had 15 in the first 18 minutes of the game, building a 64-44 lead. In the next 18 minutes, they went 4 of 14 on 3s.

Pistons: A young team could have rolled over when they were getting blown out by the defending champions, but Detroit outshot Boston 59.1% to 33.3% in a 31-point third quarter. But they couldn’t create good shots down the stretch.

Key Moment

After cutting Detroit’s lead to 110-106 with 8:16 left, the Celtics failed to score on their next six possessions until Holiday hit a 3-pointer with 3:32 to play. However, the Pistons only scored two points in the stretch.

Key Stat

The Pistons led 110-106 with 8:16 to play, but only scored eight more points.

Up Next

The Celtics play host to the Milwaukee Bucks while the Pistons face the Heat in Miami on Monday night.

Best Fit: Pittsburgh Steelers

It is no secret the Steelers would like to add another receiver.

In addition to their reported interest in Adams, they were connected to Brandon Aiyuk before the San Francisco 49ers signed him to a long-term deal. The AFC North team is off to a solid start at 4-2, but the need for another impact receiver remains.

After all, George Pickens is the only wide receiver with more than 10 catches on the season. Tight end Pat Freiermuth (22) and running back Najee Harris (14) are second and third on the team in receptions, respectively. Pittsburgh needs another game-changer on the outside for quarterback Justin Fields.

There have even been some question marks about Pickens, as he played reduced snaps in a loss to the Dallas Cowboys and was fined for an explicit message on his eye black. Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette also reported “Pickens has shown up late for work on multiple occasions this season.”

Given that situation, the Steelers could use a veteran leader in the wide receiver room.

Hopkins can be just that as a five-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro who is in his 12th season in the league. He has 14 catches for 175 yards and one touchdown in five games this season despite poor quarterback play from Will Levis on the Tennessee Titans and could benefit from a change of scenery.

Trading for him would give the Steelers a veteran leader and a much-needed go-to option on offense.

Jayden Daniels’ magical rookie season continued on Sunday as the No. 2 pick led the Washington Commanders to a 34-13 win over the Cleveland Browns.

While he threw his second interception of the year, he finished with 238 passing yards, a touchdown through the air and 82 rushing yards. He also made history, becoming the first player in NFL history to record 1,000-plus passing yards and 250-plus rushing yards through five career games.

The LSU product continued to be nothing short of spectacular in Week 5, and fans had high praises for Daniels on social media following the win.

Daniels has been everything the Commanders could have asked for out of the No. 2 pick through five games. Not only is he developing well and putting up big numbers, but he’s also leading Washington to wins.

With Sunday’s victory, the Commanders improved to 4-1 for the first time since 2008. The fourth win of the year also means Washington has matched its win total for the entire 2023 season, showing major improvements early on.

Daniels and the Commanders will get one of their biggest tests of the season so far when they take on the Baltimore Ravens next week, which will be a good measuring stick, but after Week 5 it’s hard to deny Washington is looking like a playoff team.

Barcelona 1-0 Getafe – La Liga result as Robert Lewandowski scores winner to send side four points clear

BARCELONA GO FOUR POINTS CLEAR AT TOP

A first half Robert Lewandowski goal was enough for Barcelona to continue their perfect start to La Liga with a 1-0 victory against Getafe.

Hansi Flick’s young side almost rued missing a host of chances as with the last kick of the match Getafe substitute Borja Mayoral fired wide.

Polish forward Lewandowski could have doubled his side’s lead before the break only to be denied by the visitors’ goalkeeper David Soria.

Soria was also on hand to tip a glorious effort from teenage sensation Lamine Yamal over the crossbar in the second half.

Yamal also hit the crossbar as he capitalised on a tiring Getafe defence and Barcelona skipper Raphinha also had chances to secure the points.

However, Barcelona will breathe a sigh of relief as they sit four points clear at the summit of La Liga.

Despite controlling possession Flick’s young side showed weaknesses in defence as they head to Osasuna looking to make it eight league wins on the bounce.

Meanwhile, Getafe have just four points to their name from seven matches but will be encouraged by another strong defensive performance.

Getafe have home games against Alaves and Osasuna when they will hope to pick up a first league win.

Despite the Indiana Fever suffering a 92-91 loss to the Washington Mystics on Thursday night, standout rookie Caitlin Clark was part of history once again.

An official count of 20,711 fans showed up at the Capital One Arena to watch the game, representing a new record for the highest-attended WNBA regular-season contest.

Clark finished with eight points and eight assists in 20 minutes against Washington, shooting 2-5 from the field, which included two three-pointers.

She sat for most of the second half, as Indiana previously clinched a playoff spot on Sept. 4. With a record of 20-19 entering the team’s final matchup of the regular season, the Fever were already locked into the No. 6 seed before the game started.

Thursday night’s contest broke the previous regular-season record of 20,674, which was reached four times by Washington during the 1998 and 1999 seasons (via Across the Timeline).

The Mystics typically play at Entertainment & Sports Arena, which has a capacity of 4,200. However, the game was moved to Capital One Arena in anticipation of the large crowds that Clark typically draws.

Washington isn’t the only team to transition to a larger arena ahead of contests against Indiana. The Las Vegas Aces hosted the Fever at the larger T-Mobile Arena for a July 2 game instead of playing in the relatively smaller Michelob Ultra Arena. And 20,366 fans attended the matchup, which represented the highest regular-season single-game attendance since 1999.

Fans have also flocked to watch the Fever at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, with Indiana setting a new WNBA home attendance record during the 2024 season.

After an impressive college career at Iowa, Clark has taken the WNBA by storm and appears to be in line to win the Rookie of the Year award. She’s averaging 19.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 8.4 assists per game on 41.7/34.4/90.6 shooting splits.

Saturday’s contest between Michigan and Texas kicked off with an on-field standoff between Pro Football Hall of Famer Charles Woodson and actor Matthew McConaughey.

Woodson, who played for the Wolverines from 1995 to 1997, waved the Michigan flag while Texas alum McConaughey represented the Longhorns.

No. 3 Texas is looking to end No. 10 Michigan’s 16-game unbeaten streak Saturday at the Big House.

McConaughey and Woodson were not the only special guests present in Ann Arbor for the Saturday showdown.

New York Yankees icon and Kalamazoo, Michigan-raised Derek Jeter was also present to serve as Michigan’s honorary captain.

Actor Will Ferrell meanwhile was scheduled to make an appearance on ESPN’s “College GameDay,” which is broadcast from the Michigan campus.

This is not the first time McConaughey has attempted to inspire the Longhorns to win an important game.

Former Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, who played for the Longhorns from 2006 to 2009, said in January on The Pat McAfee Show that McConaughey gave a pep talk to the Texas locker room ahead of the Rose Bowl during his redshirt freshman season. Texas went on to beat USC and claim the national title.

McConaughey earned an official title with UT in December 2018 when the school named him its “Minister of Culture.”

He went on to play 18 NFL campaigns for the Oakland Raiders and Green Bay Packers before retiring following his ninth Pro Bowl season in 2015.

Now the former two-way Wolverines star and the Texas Minister of Culture will look to see who can serve as the better good-luck charm for their team in Saturday’s top-ten battle.

Clemson Mourns Passing of Diondre Overton – Clemson Tigers Official Athletics Site

CLEMSON, S.C. — Former Clemson wide receiver Diondre Overton, who helped Clemson to national championships in both 2016 and 2018, has passed away. He was 26 years old.

Overton played more than 1,000 career snaps at Clemson across the 2016-19 seasons, collecting 52 career receptions for 777 yards and seven touchdowns over 51 games with five starts. He went on to play professionally in the USFL, recording 42 catches for 533 yards and five touchdowns for the Philadelphia Stars over the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

A two-time national champion and four-time ACC champion, Overton caught a touchdown pass in each of the first two games of Clemson’s 2018 national championship season, including Clemson’s penultimate score of its 28-26 win at Texas A&M. He recorded a career year as a senior in 2019, catching 22 passes for 352 yards and three touchdowns. That year, he earned the Leather Helmet Award as the Most Valuable Player of the Clemson/Boston College game for a performance in which he posted 119 yards and three touchdowns on only three receptions.

A native of Greensboro, N.C., Overton signed with the Tigers out of Walter Hines Page High School. He earned his degree from Clemson in sports communication in the summer of 2019.

Chris Rumph | Coach Spotlight – Clemson Tigers Official Athletics Site

Note: The following appears in the App State football gameday program.

It is not often that a college program adds a coach who has 25+ years of experience coaching at the high school, college and professional levels. Clemson did just that in Defensive Ends Coach Chris Rumph.

Once a linebacker at South Carolina, Rumph has experienced tremendous success in the coaching world. After coaching at many traditional powerhouses such as Alabama, Texas and Florida as well as some time in the NFL, Rumph decided to return to Clemson in December for his second stint with the program.

Rumph previously coached at Clemson as an assistant coach from 2006-10, a tenure that included Dabo Swinney’s promotion to head coach. Having coached with so many other teams, there is one thing about Clemson that stands out to Rumph.

“It’s simple…people. As you go around this game having been at different colleges and the NFL, you start to realize that the people make the place, and it’s not the place that makes you happy. It’s going to work with people you enjoy going to work with and celebrating with people you enjoy being around.”

One of those people who Rumph has a lot of respect for is Swinney, who is the second-winningest head coach in the country since the duo last worked together. Rumph is excited to join forces again.

“The thing that stands out to me about Coach Swinney is his consistency. A lot of people speak and talk a lot of messages, but he believes it, he walks it and he believes in everything he does. It’s the way he cares about people and what he’s trying to do and his heart for these kids to be not only football players, but successful men, fathers and husbands.”

Rumph has a similar outlook on his players on and off the field as well as with his coaching style. Coaching was not always in the picture for Rumph. After being convinced to help coach at the high school level, he quickly realized that was the path he wanted to pursue.

“The excitement is infectious. I knew this is what I wanted to do once I got around it, the guys, the kids and the energy. I wanted to impact people’s lives.”

From those days coaching at the high school level to now coaching at a premier program, the Palmetto State native has a specific attribute that he is looking for in his players.

“Toughness. If you’re not a tough person, you can’t play for me because life is tough. And you have to be prepared for all those moments in your life. You have to be able to be tough and handle the good as well as the bad and respond in the right way.”

Like Swinney, Rumph cares deeply about his players and wants to help develop them into successful men. When asked about the best advice he gives his players, Rumph shared the following.

“Everywhere in life, be on time, be where you’re supposed to be and do your best. That’s all I’m concerned with…to be where you’re supposed to be, be on time and do your best. If that’s at your son’s game, be where you’re supposed to be, be on time and be the best cheerleader out there. If it’s for a dance recital for your daughter, if it’s for work, if it’s for a cousin or friend, be where you’re supposed to be, be on time and do your best.”

Now returning to Clemson 14 years later fresh off four seasons coaching in the NFL, Rumph is back and eager to help the Tigers in their pursuit of more postseason glory.

A highly successful and sought-after coach at both the college and professional level, Rumph chose to return to Tigertown, showing his belief in the program. It is safe to say that Rumph is right on time, right where he is supposed to be.

The 2024 College Football season has already seen its first major upset.

No. 10 Florida State fell to unranked Georgia Tech 24-21 after a last-second field goal from the Yellow Jackets cemented a win in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic in Ireland on Saturday.

Florida State finished undefeated in the regular season in 2023 and brought in veteran quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei from the transfer portal. So far, that experiment is not paying off.

Fans took to social media to roast the Seminoles and declare that their season is already over.

Florida State entered the game with a chip on its shoulder after the controversial end to the 2023 season. However, the Seminoles did themselves no favors by losing this game.

Yellow Jackets quarterback was named the Player of the Game for his efforts. He went 11-of-15 for 146 yards in the air and also added 15 carries for 54 yards on the ground.

The Yellow Jackets earned 190 rushing yards and look like a team on the rise. Florida State’s loss is a set back, but it’s not as drastic as it would have been a year ago.

The 2024 season will feature 12 teams making the playoff, with five automatic qualifiers for conference champions. While Florida State starts the season with a conference loss, there is a path that still exists for the team.

The Seminoles now just have less room for error.
