It’s a huge match for West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui as the struggling Hammers host Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United at the London Stadium.

Two sides looking to bounce back from frustrating EPL defeats last weekend face off at Stamford Bridge on Sunday as Chelsea host Newcastle.

The grim reality of following a Champions League minnow: ‘We’re on a different planet’

The Champions League — where dreams come true, fantasies become reality and legends are born. Or something like that.

Unless you’re Dinamo Zagreb, Red Bull Salzburg, Celtic, Red Star Belgrade, Slovan Bratislava or Young Boys, in which case the Champions League is where fears prevail, nightmares become reality and careers get ruined.

OK, maybe not that bad, but fans of the above clubs can be forgiven for feeling apprehensive when UEFA’s anthem plays during Matchday Three tonight (Tuesday) and tomorrow.

These are teams who are used to dominating their domestic leagues, winning 60 per cent or 70 per cent of their league matches year after year (even as high as 84 per cent last season for Red Star) to claim title after title.

Taking the past seven domestic seasons, Dinamo, Salzburg, Celtic, Red Star, Slovan and Young Boys have won 38 league titles between them, out of a possible 42. Dinamo have taken every one of those Croatian championships with Red Star doing the same in Serbia, and the rest have won six of the available seven.

They are superior in their homelands almost to the point of boredom. And yet, from their combined opening two rounds of Champions League matches this season, the six teams have scored 12 goals between them and conceded a whopping 49. That’s a combined goal difference of -37 from 12 matches.

Transferring domestic bliss to European success is not easy, especially when your budget is a fraction of the spending power available at Manchester City, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich.

According to transfer website Transfermarkt, Slovan have spent a total of £2.6million ($3.4m) on new signings in the past three seasons and their squad has a total estimated value of £24m. The same source lists City as having spent £365m in the past three years (which, to be honest, feels quite frugal for them) and their squad value is estimated at being a smidgen over £1billion. So, City have spent roughly 139 times as much as Slovan since 2022, and their squad is worth 43 times as much.

When the teams faced each other three weeks ago on Matchday Two, Slovan’s odds for winning on home turf were 40/1. They may have a monopoly on the Slovakian title, but with a budget akin to a club in League One, Engish football’s third tier, they were predictably no match for City.

“We dreamt of, one day, the best team in the world, or one of the best, coming (here),” Slovan manager Vladimir Weiss told reporters before the match. The reality, however, was less romantic: City had 28 shots, scored four goals, hit the woodwork three times and registered an expected goals (xG) figure of 3.8. Slovan had 24 per cent possession and didn’t register a shot on target.

“Honestly, this was just as we expected,” Tomas, a Slovan fan who attended the game, tells The Athletic. “Slovan has not played in the Champions League for 32 years (having failed to get past its qualifying rounds on 11 occasions), so it is a big success to even be there.

“When we beat (Denmark’s champions) Midtjylland to qualify (having got through three previous ties in a campaign that began four days before last season had ended with the Euro 2024 final on July 14), it was one of the best results in the last few years and was like a European final for us.

“Then we were drawn against Manchester City, Bayern Munich, AC Milan and Atletico Madrid (among their eight league-phase games). These are matches we have not had for many, many years, so even though we will probably lose, it is still a big prize. The Celtic defeat (Slovan lost 5-1 in Glasgow on Matchday One) was not good, but even a club like Celtic has much more money than us.

“We have Dinamo (Zagreb) at home (on November 5), a match we can look to draw or win, but mostly I want the eight games to be a lesson for the players and the owners, and for us to make money from TV and full stadiums to spend on improving the team.”

There is a distinct “happy to be there” vibe from Slovan, but that does not apply to every Champions League ‘minnow’.

Salzburg, who will compete in the revamped Club World Cup in the United States next summer courtesy of their consistent Champions League group-phase qualification in recent years, are adjusting to life under a new manager in Jurgen Klopp’s long-time Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders, and were probably thought of as a bit of a dark horse going into the league phase.

Instead, they were comfortably beaten 3-0 at Sparta Prague and then surprisingly trounced 4-0 at home to French newcomers Brest. They lie fourth in the early-season Austrian Bundesliga, six points off leaders Sturm Graz, but have two games in hand.

“I don’t want to make excuses, I take full responsibility,” Lijnders said in a press conference after the Brest defeat. “This group has enough quality that it should not happen like this. That worries me a little bit.

“We expected a completely different start in the Champions League, especially with the qualification (beating FC Twente, 5-4 on aggregate, and Dynamo Kyiv, 3-1). I’m sick of people calling us a young team. There are no excuses, we have enough quality to win football matches in the Champions League.”

Young Boys, whose Swiss Super League is of a similar standard to Austria’s Bundesliga, will also have expected better than to be propping up the 32-team Champions League table after two defeats (3-0 at home to Aston Villa, 5-0 at Barcelona).

Like Salzburg, the Bern club are enduring domestic woes, and sacked manager Patrick Rahmen, who had only been appointed in the summer, a week after the Barcelona thrashing. They are 10th in a 12-team domestic league. A visit from Inter Milan, Serie A champions and three-time European Cup/Champions League winners, awaits on Wednesday.

Dinamo also dispensed with their manager after suffering one of the heaviest defeats in Champions League history, losing 9-2 at Bayern last month. Sergej Jakirovic had led Dinamo to a Croatian league and cup double in 2023-24 but the Bayern thrashing was deemed unacceptable and he left two days later by mutual consent.

A 2-2 home draw against Monaco on Matchday Two, under new boss Nenad Bjelica, suggested the right decision had been made. Next up? A visit to Lijnders and Salzburg on Wednesday.

And then you have Celtic. Unlike many of those sides mentioned above, the Scottish club are Champions League regulars and have taken some incredible scalps over the years, beating Barcelona, Juventus, Manchester United and AC Milan (and back in 1967 they won the competition). But every one of those victories has come at Celtic Park where, backed by one of the most vociferous atmospheres in European football, they can be a match for anyone.

Away from home, it’s a different story. This season’s competition has been Celtic in Europe in a microcosm, thrashing Slovan 5-1 at home and then being humiliated 7-1 by Borussia Dortmund in Germany, where they conceded five before half-time — the first time a British club had done so in a major European competition since 1997-98. It was their 31st defeat from 37 Champions League group/league-stage away games — and in those 37, they have conceded an almighty 100 goals.

Yet manager Brendan Rodgers was unrepentant in not changing the team’s approach for that Dortmund game, despite facing criticism familiar from his first spell at Celtic, when his side lost 7-0 to Barcelona at Camp Nou and 7-1 at Paris Saint-Germain, or 6-0 away to Atletico Madrid in his second spell last season.

“We play in a way that allows us to dominate domestically,” Rodgers said. “We know it’s going to be difficult at times for us to do that, but we still have to show our ability with the ball. Are we going to sit in and camp, and wait? No, we won’t do that.”

Celtic supporters who have paid thousands of pounds to travel across the continent to see their team win just two of 37 Champions League away matches (beating Spartak Moscow in 2012-13 and Belgium’s Anderlecht in 2017-18) may see things differently. While nobody could accuse Celtic fans of not making the most of their trips abroad, if anyone has attended all 37 games, they will have travelled more than 70,000 miles, which is almost three times around the world, to see two victories.

“I’ve not done that many, but I’ve never seen us win abroad,” Celtic season-ticket holder Alasdair tells The Athletic. “There is always a great atmosphere on the road and no one takes it for granted that we’re privileged to visit some great cities and stadiums, but it’s pretty demoralising.

“There’s maybe an unrealistic expectation at the club that we should be doing better, but given our resources compared to the Premier League and the big Spanish, German and Italian clubs, we’re on a different planet. We’ll find the new format only skews the imbalance further.”

We are working with an incredibly small sample size after two rounds but the early results in the expanded 36-team ‘league phase’ do suggest the scales are tipping further. We have seen scorelines of 9-2, 7-1, 5-0 and 5-1, plus four 4-0s. After 36 matches, this is proving to be one of the most goal-heavy editions of the Champions League, with 3.19 per game being close to the highest on record (3.24 in 2019-20).

So far, it has been the most one-sided Champions League season yet, with an average margin of victory of 2.57 goals, comfortably above the next highest of 2.37 from the 1993-94 season.

By expanding the competition, the quality will be diluted, while this bigger first stage could lend itself to teams playing more expansively, given the probable need for only 10 or so points from your eight matches to reach at least the play-off knockout round, where places in the last-16 will be up for grabs.

As the rich get richer and the financial imbalance across Europe increases, expect more of the same. And expect fans of relative Champions League minnows to dread rather than relish their continental adventures.

Luka Modric has become the oldest player in Real Madrid’s history at 39 years and 40 days old, overtaking their legendary Hungarian forward Ferenc Puskas.

Modric’s longevity at the top of the game is almost unrivalled. The Croatia midfielder’s 27 trophies across 13 seasons with Madrid are the most of any player in club history and he will soon rack up 550 appearances (he is on 547). Striker Raul is the club’s record appearance maker, having featured in 741 games from 1994-2010.

“By all the parameters of football… Luka should have retired a couple of years ago,” his friend and former Madrid striker Predrag Mijatovic told The Athletic last year. “But then you see him play and you have to say, ‘This guy is not 38 (as he was then), he is 28’.”

Here, we look at what Modric’s peers have said about him, the players he has overtaken to become Madrid’s oldest ever and how that record compares in the Champions League and La Liga — as well as recapping some of his best moments with the Spanish club.

The moment Modric’s Madrid career took off after a mixed first season following his move from Tottenham Hotspur of the Premier League.

After the first leg finished 1-1 at the Bernabeu, Madrid were 1-0 down at Old Trafford following a Sergio Ramos own-goal. Nani had been shown a controversial red card to reduce the home side to 10 men but Modric made sure Madrid’s nerves were truly settled when he picked up the ball in United’s half, skipped past Michael Carrick and rifled home a right-footed finish via the post from distance.

Everyone remembers Ramos as the hero of La Decima — Madrid’s previously elusive 10th European Cup/Champions League trophy — but the centre-back’s late header to force extra time came from a typically excellent Modric delivery. The first in a series of remarkable comebacks by Madrid en route to winning their 14th European Cup.

Madrid were drawing 1-1 with Paris Saint-Germain at the Bernabeu and losing 2-1 on aggregate with 14 minutes of the 90 to go when Modric regained possession in his own half, burst past Neymar and Idrissa Gueye and played an inch-perfect through ball for Vinicius Junior. The winger held up play before offloading to an unmarked Modric, who threaded another fine pass for Benzema to score his second of the night, before the Frenchman completed his hat-trick with the winner two minutes later.

Another crucial Modric moment in a Champions League comeback that season.

Chelsea had somehow fought back from a 3-1 first-leg loss at home to lead 3-0 in Madrid, and 4-3 on aggregate with 10 minutes of the 90 remaining. Which is when Modric took control, looking up and playing a remarkable outside-of-the-boot pass for Rodrygo to run onto and draw the sides level overall. Benzema then won the tie in extra time.

Who are Madrid’s other oldest players?

Ferenc Puskas (39 years and 37 days)

One of the most iconic players in Madrid’s history — as much as for his backstory as for what he achieved in the Spanish capital.

Puskas starred for the Hungary team who inflicted a 6-3 defeat on England in 1953 — their first loss against foreign opposition at Wembley — and reached the following year’s World Cup final. Then, in 1956, he took advantage of a tour by his club side, Budapest’s Honved, to leave his home country after the Soviet Union quashed an attempted uprising there. World governing body FIFA subsequently imposed a two-year playing ban on Puskas at the Hungarian FA’s request.

That meant Puskas was 31 years old and 18kg (40lb) overweight by the time he arrived at Madrid in 1958. Not that it mattered: he soon slotted into a team who were on their way to winning the first five European Cups and earned the Spanish nickname ‘Canoncito Pum’ (roughly translated as ‘Booming Little Cannon’) for his powerful left foot.

He went on to score 242 times in 262 games for Madrid, winning five La Liga titles and three European Cups — the latter including four goals in the 7-3 win in the 1960 final against Eintracht Frankfurt at Glasgow’s Hampden Park, with his friend Alfredo Di Stefano getting the other three. “It was one of those blissful times when the whole team seemed to play brilliantly and we almost achieved some kind of footballing perfection,” he later said, as quoted in the book Puskas On Puskas.

FIFA named its award for the best goal scored anywhere worldwide in a calendar year after Puskas in 2009, three years after his death at age 79 following a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Paco Buyo (38 years and 63 days)

Buyo was the goalkeeper behind the team known as ‘La Quinta del Buitre’ — ‘The Vulture’s Cohort’, referring to striker Emilio Butragueno’s nickname and his fellow academy graduates Manolo Sanchis, Rafael Martin Vazquez, Michel and Miguel Pardeza.

Though he was not one of those homegrown stars, joining from Sevilla in 1986, Buyo played a key role in four of the five La Liga titles the side won in a row from 1986-90. He stood out for his speed, reflexes and unique style, often rushing out of his area to intercept passes and would even dribble past opponents after winning possession.

“Lots of people called me crazy… but I was ahead of my time,” he told Spanish newspaper El Mundo in 2021. “When we watch football now, who was the crazy one? Today there’s lots of praise for goalkeepers like me, but back then I was a Martian.”

He retired in 1997, after a season in which he didn’t feature at all following the arrival of German Bodo Illgner. Iker Casillas (with 725) is the only goalkeeper to have made more appearances for Madrid than Buyo’s 451, the last of which was a 2-0 La Liga win against Albacete in March 1996.

Jerzy Dudek (38 years and 59 days)

An outlier on this list, Dudek only played 12 times for Madrid after joining from Liverpool in 2007, two years after his Champions League final heroics against AC Milan in Istanbul.

“Real Madrid spoke to me when we were in Athens preparing for the Champions League final (that May, also against Milan) and I was laughing saying, ‘Don’t joke with me’,” the Polish goalkeeper told UK newspaper The Guardian in 2008. “I never thought it would be possible to join a bigger club than Liverpool, but I was wrong.”

Dudek was rarely called on as Casillas’ understudy but picked up a La Liga winner’s medal in his first season and one after the 2011 Copa del Rey final, when Madrid beat Barcelona with the clubs’ El Clasico rivalry at its fiercest.

He was given a guard of honour by his team-mates and a standing ovation by the Bernabeu crowd when he was replaced in his last senior appearance, against Almeria in May 2011.

Alfredo Di Stefano (37 years and 328 days)

Possibly the most important player in Madrid’s history.

Argentina-born Di Stefano joined the club in 1953 and helped forge their legend by inspiring those first five European Cups as well as eight La Liga titles. Nicknamed ‘La Saeta Rubia’ (The Blond Arrow), he was nominally a forward but contributed all over the pitch.

His seven goals in European Cup finals are only matched by Puskas — Cristiano Ronaldo is the next-most prolific in Champions League/European Cup finals with four for Manchester United and Madrid — and he was the club’s record goalscorer with 308 in 396 games until Raul surpassed him in 2009 (Cristiano Ronaldo and Benzema have since overtaken the latter). Madrid’s website simply describes Di Stefano as ‘The best footballer of all time’.

Di Stefano went on to have two spells as Madrid’s manager in the 1980s and 1990s and was named an honorary president of the club, but that was small potatoes compared to his achievements as a player. When he died in 2014, aged 88, his casket was displayed at the Bernabeu.

“In 50 years, Real Madrid won two La Liga titles,” their former player, manager, sporting director and now-pundit Jorge Valdano wrote for newspaper El Pais after his death. “Alfredo arrived and, in the next 50, the club won more titles than all the Spanish teams put together. Such a solid fact doesn’t need nuance, because that’s called changing history.”

WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State University Warriors take on the Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs in their Sunday home match up. 

The Warriors head into a single match up weekend after going 1-1 last weekend. WSU beat the Cougars from the University of Sioux Falls 1-0 and fell in a hard fought battle against the #12 Mavericks from Minnesota State University, Mankato 1-0.  The Warriors are set to face off against SMSU on Sunday, October 20 at 1 p.m. on their home pitch. 

Winona State Notes: 

  • The Warriors are 4-5-1 overall and 3-5 in the NSIC.

  • Alyson Jumper earned NSIC Goalkeeper of the Week after her performance against USF and MSU.

  • Jumper earned her third shutout of the season in the WSU win against the Cougars, winning 1-0. 

  • Jumper collected 13 saves, a .929 save percentage, faced 11 corner kicks, and allowed only one goal against USF and MSU.

  • Catheryn Hudak scored the game winning goal against USF. 

  • Kyleigh Jannisch picked up her second assist on the season agasinst the Cougars. 

Southwest Minnesota State Notes: 

  • The Mustangs are 1-9-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the NSIC.

  • Haley Mason lead the SMSU with three goals on the season. 

  • Dare Kroeten leads the Mustangs with one assist on the season. 

  • Rachel Hicks lead the team in goal with a total of 72 saves this season. 

  • Mason leads the team with shots on goal having collected 12 shots on goal. 

  • Hicks collected her first shutout of the season in their game against UMC on October 4. 

The Winona State University Warriors are set to face off against the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs on Sunday, October 20 with first kick set for 1 p.m. at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium.

Real Madrid beats Villarreal 2-0 in La Liga but loses Carvajal to leg injury

MADRID (AP) — Real Madrid rebounded from its first loss in nearly 10 months by beating Villarreal 2-0 at the possible cost of injured right back Dani Carvajal in La Liga on Saturday.

Federico Valverde and Vinícius Júnior scored for the defending champions four days after they lost at Lille 1-0 in the Champions League to halt a 36-game unbeaten streak in all competitions.

Madrid remains unbeaten in 41 consecutive Spanish league games. Beating third-placed Villarreal gave Madrid the same 21 points as Barcelona, which visits Alaves on Sunday.

Carvajal was hurt in second-half stoppage time at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, going down in pain after kicking the leg of an opponent. He appeared to make a gesture showing something snapped in his leg. The Spain international was crying when he was carried off the field on a stretcher.

“It looks like it’s a very serious knee injury,” Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said. “Everyone is sad and worried. It’s something that happens very often because of the calendar and it has happened to a very important player in out squad.”

Ancelotti said Carvajal will undergo tests. Madrid’s reserve right back is Lucas Vázquez.

“Carvajal is a key player for us because of his experience and his attitude,” Ancelotti said of the 32-year-old defender who started in Madrid’s youth squads and joined the main team in 2013-14.

Villarreal, which was coming off two straight wins, had only one attempt on target. Madrid had two, scoring on both of them.

Valverde scored in the 14th minute with a long-range shot that deflected in off a defender. Vinícius struck from outside the area in the 72nd into the top corner.

Aspas sent off for protesting

Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas was sent off in a 1-0 win at last-placed Las Palmas after being issued consecutive yellow cards for protesting.

He complained about the referee’s decision to show a red card to teammate Ilaix Moriba and received the first yellow in the 54th minute. Aspas’ second came in the 56th. The striker was seen briefly asking his teammates to leave the field after he was sent off.

Celta held on despite playing two men down to the end of the match. Borja Iglesia scored a 28th-minute winner in the visitor’s only attempt on goal.

The result ended a three-game winless streak for Celta.

Las Palmas, the only team yet to win in the league, hasn’t won in 23 straight league matches going back to last season, when it barely avoided relegation.

Other results

Jorge de Frutos scored a pair of second-half goals for Rayo Vallecano to win at Valladolid 2-1, while Espanyol defeated Mallorca 2-1 at home and Osasuna drew at Getafe 1-1.
