South Korea calls for immediate withdrawal of North Korean troops allegedly in Russia

South Korea calls for immediate withdrawal of North Korean troops allegedly in Russia

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea on Monday demanded the immediate pullout of North Korean troops allegedly deployed in Russia as it summoned the Russian ambassador to protest deepening military cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow.

South Korea’s spy agency said Friday it had confirmed that North Korea sent 1,500 special operation forces to Russia this month to support Moscow’s war against Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier said his government had intelligence that 10,000 North Korea soldiers were being prepared to join invading Russian forces.

During a meeting with Russian Ambassador Georgy Zinoviev, Vice South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Hong Kyun “condemned in the strongest terms” North Korea’s troop dispatch that he said poses “a grave security threat” to South Korea and the international community, the South Korean Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Kim said that South Korea in collaboration with the international community will mobilize all available means to deal with an act that threatens its vital national security interests, according to the statement. The Russian Embassy quoted Zinoviev as saying that the Russian-North Korean cooperation is not aimed against the security interests of South Korea.

In a telephone call with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Monday, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said that Seoul won’t sit idly by “reckless” military cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow. Yoon said South Korea will soon send a delegation to NATO to exchange information about Russian-North Korean cooperation, according to Yoon’s office. Rutte wrote on X that North Korea possibly fighting alongside Russia would “mark a significant escalation.”

The U.S. and NATO haven’t confirmed that North Korean troops were sent to Russia. But the reports of their presence have already stoked concerns in South Korea that Russia might provide North Korea with sophisticated technologies that can sharply enhance the North’s nuclear and missile programs in return for its troop dispatch.

North Korea’s advancing nuclear arsenal is a major security threat to South Korea. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently took steps to permanently terminate all relations with South Korea and threatened to use nuclear weapons preemptively. Some observers say South Korea will likely consider supplying weapons to Ukraine if Russian transfers of high-tech nuclear and missile technologies to North Korea are verified.

South Korea has joined U.S.-led sanctions against Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. But South Korea hasn’t directly provided arms to Kyiv, citing its longstanding policy of not supplying weapons to countries actively engaged in conflicts.

Russia has earlier denied using North Korean troops in its war with Ukraine. North Korea’s state media hasn’t commented on the matter. Ukrainian officials released a video allegedly showing North Korean soldiers lining up to collect Russian military clothes and bags at an unknown location. The Associated Press couldn’t verify the footage independently.

Asked about the North Korean troops during a conference call with reporters Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that “we are seeing a lot of contradictory information.”

“South Koreans say one thing, then the Pentagon says it has no confirmation of such statements. There is a lot of contradictory information,” Peskov said. ”It must be treated as such.”

At a U.N. Security Council meeting Monday on Ukraine, Western ambassadors raised the South Korean intelligence, but none confirmed it.

U.S. deputy ambassador Robert Wood said that if true, it marks “a dangerous and highly concerning development” and noted that the U.S. was “consulting with our allies and partners on such a dramatic move.”

Britain’s U.N. Ambassador Barbara Woodward said it’s “highly likely” North Korea agreed to send troops in support of Russia’s war.

Russia’s U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia dismissed the South Korean assertion as well as Western allegations of Iran supplying Russia with missiles and China providing arms components. He accused the West of “circulating scaremongering with Iranian, Chinese and Korean bogeymen, each one of which is more absurd than the one before.”

North Korea’s troop deployment to Russia would be its first participation in a major war since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War. Many experts question how much North Korean troops would help Russia on the battlefield, citing their lack of combat experience.

Cooperation between North Korea and Russia has flourished over the past two years. The U.S., South Korea and their partners have accused North Korea of supplying conventional arms to Russia in return for economic and military assistance. In June, Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a pact stipulating mutual military assistance if either country is attacked.

LOS ANGELES — Mitzi Gaynor, the effervescent dancer and actor who starred as Nellie Forbush in the 1958 film of “South Pacific” and appeared in other musicals with Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly, has died. She was 93.

Gaynor, among the last survivors of the so-called golden age of the Hollywood musical, died of natural causes in Los Angeles on Thursday morning, her long-time managers Rene Reyes and Shane Rosamonda confirmed in a statement to The Associated Press.

“As we celebrate her legacy, we offer our thanks to her friends and fans and the countless audiences she entertained throughout her long life,” Reyes and Rosamonda said in a joint statement. “Your love, support and appreciation meant so very much to her and was a sustaining gift in her life.”

Her entertainment career spanned eight decades across film, television and the stage, and appeared in several notable films including “We’re Not Married!” and “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” but she is best remembered for her turn in “South Pacific.”

The screen version of “South Pacific” received three Academy Award nominations and won for best sound, while Gaynor was a best actress nominee for a Golden Globe.

The role of the love-sick nurse Nellie, created on Broadway by Mary Martin, had been eagerly sought by Hollywood stars. Sinatra helped Gaynor land it.

She was starring with him in “The Joker Is Wild,” when she had a one-day opportunity to audition for lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II. It was the same day she was scheduled for her biggest scene with Sinatra. When she explained her plight, he told her, “Don’t worry, I’ll change the schedule.”

Hammerstein was impressed with Gaynor, who had already won the approval of director Josh Logan and composer Richard Rodgers. She was cast opposite Rossano Brazzi, about whom she sang “I’m in Love with a Wonderful Guy.”

Gaynor’s career spanned film, television and Vegas

“South Pacific” was not the turning point in her career that Gaynor had hoped it would be, and she shifted her focus from film to television, making early appearances on Donald O’Connor’s variety series “Here Comes Donald,” and on CBS’ “The Jack Benny Hour.” In October of 1959, she was the only women to guest star alongside Sinatra, Crosby, Dean Martin and Jimmy Durante on ABC’s “The Frank Sinatra Timex Show” special.

Later in her career, Gaynor reinvented herself as a performing entertainer. Working with her husband and manager Jack Bean, she starred in her own musical revue that was a big draw in theaters throughout the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and Australia.

She became the highest paid female entertainer in Las Vegas and was the first woman to be awarded the Las Vegas governor’s trophy for “Star Entertainer of the Year” in 1970.

When touring with a full orchestra, a corps of dancers and backstage personnel became too unwieldy and expensive, Gaynor slimmed down the production, eventually making it a one-woman show. They continued touring every year until 2002 when Bean’s illness required a hiatus.

“I love touring; I’ve been doing it much of my life,” Gaynor said in a 2003 interview. “We go back to the same places; it’s like visiting friends. After the show, people come backstage to the dressing room, and we renew friendships. We send out almost 3,000 Christmas cards every year.”

“Off stage, she was a vibrant and extraordinary woman, a caring and loyal friend, and a warm, gracious, very funny and altogether glorious human being. And she could cook, too!” the statement from Rosamonda and Reyes said, referencing a song from the musical “On the Town” that Gaynor sang in one of her revue shows.

Gaynor also starred in several television variety specials, including “Mitzi…Zings Into Springs” and “Mitzi…Roarin’ in the 20’s.” Many of the specials received nominations for Emmy Awards, with wins for choreography, lighting, art design and costume design, the last of which was awarded to Gaynor’s longtime collaborator, Bob Mackie. The specials were the subject of the 2008 documentary “Mitzi Gaynor: Razzle Dazzle! The Special Years.”

She began singing and dancing at a young age

Born Francesca Marlene de Czanyi von Gerber (Mitzi is diminutive for Marlene) in Chicago on Sept. 4, 1931, she was a part of a musically inclined family and started singing and dancing at a young age.

In a 2003 AP interview, Gaynor said she has a clear memory of her stage debut. She had been taking ballet and tap lessons and at age 7 she was scheduled for a tap routine at the dance school recital. She had neglected to use the bathroom, and when she faced the audience, a puddle formed on the stage.

“I ran kicking and screaming off the stage,” she recalls. “But I got huge applause. So I dried off and put some lipstick on. After the next girl did a hula with batons and slipped on the wet floor, I went out and said, ‘I’m OK now. Can I do it?’ And I got cheers!”

Gaynor and Bean married in 1954 and in 1960 bought a spacious house in Beverly Hills that became their home until his death in 2006. They rarely appeared at Hollywood events, preferring to entertain a few close friends. The couple had no children.

Alabama 27-25 South Carolina (Oct 12, 2024) Game Recap

Alabama 27-25 South Carolina (Oct 12, 2024) Game Recap

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — — Alabama was pushed to the brink of a second straight Southeastern Conference upset loss.

This time the Crimson Tide survived, if only barely.

No. 7 Alabama (5-1, 2-1) botched the recovery of an onside kick to give South Carolina one last chance, but Domani Jackson intercepted LaNorris Sellers as time expired and the Tide escaped with a 27-25 win.

It was Alabama’s third straight game that went down to the very end, having beaten then-No. 2 Georgia 41-34 a week before losing 40-35 to Vanderbilt.

“Another game down to the wire,” Tide coach Kalen DeBoer said. “We’re kind of getting accustomed to those. There’s some things that we can do to make sure it doesn’t get to that point. But we always talk about finding a way to win. As many times as it looked like we weren’t, we did.”

With 43 seconds remaining, Sellers hit Nyck Harbor for a 31-yard touchdown, but the Gamecocks (3-2, 1-3) failed to convert on their two-point attempt. They recovered the ensuing onside kick, but Sellers’ desperation heave toward the end zone with 13 seconds remaining was intercepted at the goal line by Jackson.

“We expected to win this game,” South Carolina coach Shane Beamer said. “Nobody was coming in here at halftime doing cartwheels because we were in a tight game with Alabama. We expected that, because we have a good football team. Life in this conference is really hard.”

Jalen Milroe rushed for a 7-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter and then hit Germie Bernard for a late 34-yard score to help Alabama survive the scare. It wasn’t quite the emphatic rebound win they were hoping to produce.

“It’s not the ‘W’ that we wanted,” Alabama defensive lineman Tim Smith said. “It should have been a lot more dominant and physical, but a ‘W’ is a ‘W,’ man.”

Milroe delivered when he had to in a game where he was intercepted twice and flagged for intentional grounding on a sack in the end zone for a safety. Facing third-and-10, he found Bernard downfield without a defender anywhere in the vicinity with 1:54 left to cap a 10-play drive.

“There was a lot of safe avenues and things that we discussed on that play and I think that they were aggressive in trying to play a lot of those,” DeBoer said. “There was a deeper route and I love that Jalen saw it.”

Milroe was 16-of-23 passing for 209 yards with a touchdown and two rushing scores. Sellers was 23 of 31 for 238 yards with two TDs and the final pick.

The Gamecocks entered the fourth quarter with a lead and had a chance to retake it. But Alex Herrera’s 51-yard field goal attempt, which would have been a career long, was short.

Milroe had taken advantage of a Sellers fumble with his 7-yard touchdown run with 10:42 left but the two-point pass failed, leaving it 20-19.

He was relegated to cheerleader at the end with the defense on the field, just like against Vandy and Georgia.

“When we talk about team, that’s a great example of just finding a way as a group to just cheer on whoever’s on the field and everyone just buying in,” Milroe said.

Alabama’s 14-0 lead was whittled down to two over the final 1:37 before halftime amid a series of South Carolina’s big plays and Tide snafus. It included the safety, turnovers from each team and Sellers’ fourth-and-9 pass to a wide-open Mazeo Bennett Jr. for a 36-yard score.

“There was some crazy stuff but our guys just kept hanging in there,” Beamer said.

The takeaway

South Carolina: The Gamecocks largely turned things around after a 27-3 home loss to No. 9 Mississippi, with Sellers outplaying Milroe for much of the way.

Alabama: That dominant first half and win over Georgia seems like a different season now. But like that game, the Tide managed to hold on.

Poll implications

Alabama could fall in the rankings despite the win.

Northern lights may be visible as far south as Alabama, California

Northern lights may be visible as far south as Alabama, California

A powerful eruption from the sun is expected to supercharge the northern lights on Thursday evening, making colorful sky shows visible potentially as far south as Alabama and Northern California.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center said Thursday that plasma and other materials from the sun reached Earth at 11:17 a.m. ET, triggering what the agency called a “severe” geomagnetic storm.

These types of solar storms occur when eruptions from the sun, known as coronal mass ejections, hurl giant clouds of plasma into space. When directed at Earth, the plumes of charged particles collide with the planet’s magnetic field, interacting with atoms and molecules in the upper atmosphere to produce radiant auroras.

If conditions are clear, skywatchers in Canada and many northern U.S. states — including Alaska, Washington state, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin — will likely have the best views of the northern lights. Highly active auroras could also be visible in parts of Northern California, Nevada, Oklahoma, Alabama, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York.

This week’s solar storm is the most severe since May 10, when the Space Weather Prediction Center observed an even stronger and much rarer solar storm. Before the May event, the NOAA had not issued a severe geomagnetic storm watch since 2005.

A look at the Atlantic on Sept. 30, 2024.

Tropical Storm Kirk forms, expected to become a major hurricane – NBC 6 South Florida

Another tropical storm formed in the Atlantic Monday and was expected to become a major hurricane later this week, forecasters said.

Tropical Storm Kirk had maximum sustained winds of 60 mph as it moved west over 800 miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

There were no coastal watches or warnings in effect and Kirk was forecast to stay in the open waters of the Atlantic at this time.

Kirk was forecast to become a major hurricane as it tracks northwest over the next week but was not expected to bring threats to South Florida.

Meanwhile, Joyce barely remained a tropical depression on Monday as it headed north far out over the Atlantic.

A look at the Atlantic on Sept. 30, 2024.

To the north, what was Tropical Storm Isaac was moving into the high latitudes of the North Atlantic and losing its tropical characteristics, becoming a post-tropical cyclone.

To the east of Kirk was another disturbance that had an 80% chance of formation over the next week, and could become a tropical depression over the next few days while it moves slowly westward over the eastern tropical Atlantic.

Another area being monitored was in the western Caribbean Sea that had a 40% chance of development over the next week, possibly while the system is in the southern Gulf of Mexico.

Kirk is the 11th named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season. If it becomes a major hurricane, it would be the third of the season, following Beryl and Helene.

Football Erases 17-Point Deficit to Beat South Carolina, 36-33 – LSU

COLUMBIA, S.C. – After falling behind 17-0 at the 12:19 mark in the second quarter, the No. 16 Tigers fought until the final whistle to defeat South Carolina at Williams-Brice Stadium, 36-33, on Saturday in Columbia.

Today’s victory marked the second-largest (tied) comeback win in program history away from home. The program record is 21 points versus Ole Miss in Jackson on Oct. 29, 1977.

LSU returns to Tiger Stadium next Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. CT kick against UCLA. The game will be televised on ABC.

Sellers and the South Carolina offense saw early success in the passing game, completing back-to-back passes to move across midfield, and would not look back. Running back Rocket Sanders would then break open a 27-yard gain for the Gamecocks, bringing the ball down to the LSU 4. Sellers would find paydirt in with a four yard QB keeper, putting a bow on an a seven play opening scoring drive, spanning 75 yards and just two minutes and 46 seconds.

On 3rd-and-11, with South Carolina threatening once again in LSU territory, Sellers’ pass to the end zone was intercepted by senior cornerback Zy Alexander, giving the Tigers the back back with 8:15 to play in the first quarter.

LSU’s offensive line surrendered their first sack of the season as Nussmeier was brought down for a 12-yard loss on 3rd-and-10 by Kyle Kennard. The Gamecocks were getting pressure early and often from edge rushers that are rated among the top in college football. LSU trailed 7-0 with 5:13 to play in the first quarter.

With 13:49 to play in the second quarter, South Carolina added to their lead with a 28-yard field goal from Alex Herrera, however, the Tigers defense made a stop on 3rd-and-7 as Ashton Stamps forced an incomplete pass, limiting the damage to three points instead of seven.

On 4th-and-21 from the LSU 41, Peyton Todd’s punt was blocked by Maurice Brown and recovered by Buddy Mack III and returned 16 yards to the LSU 10. Sanders then rushed for a 10-yard gain up the muddle for a touchdown to extend their lead to 17-0 with 12:19 to play.

The Tigers finally got on the board midway through the second quarter as freshman running back Caden Durham broke a 26-yard rushing touchdown on 3rd-and-9, cutting the deficit to 17-7 with 8:08 to play in the first half.

LSU got another massive stop from its defense in a big moment. On 3rd-and-12 from the USC 20, Sellers was sacked by Sage Ryan and Harold Perkins for a loss of 14 yards and a fumble, which was recovered by Perkins at the South Carolina 18.

The Tigers advanced to the USC 11, but on 3rd-and-3, Nussmeier’s pass to CJ Daniels fell incomplete, forcing a field goal. Placekicker Damien Ramos got LSU closer by connecting on a 28-yard field goal, making it a 17-10 game at the 4:28 mark.

The momentum was quickly halted as Sellers broke a 75-yard touchdown run over the middle of the field, extending South Carolina’s lead to 24-10 with 4:15 to play in the half. The Gamecocks had 232 yards of total offense to LSU’s 89 at that point.

Nussmeier responded with some big time throws to Daniels and Aaron Anderson. Back to-back-to-back throws of 18, 23, and 20 yards brought the Tigers inside SC territory to the Gamecock 16.

Nussmeier would then find Kyren Lacy for a 12-yard touchdown score, cutting the deficit to 24-16 with 1:20 to play. The PAT attempt was no good.

Bradyn Swinson brought Sellers to the ground for a sack to end the half. LSU trailed SC 24-16.

Kaleb Jackson opened the second half with a big 19-yard gain to the LSU 44. Nussmeier then found Anderson for a 44-yard pickup near the sideline, bringing the ball down to the USC 16. On 3rd-and-10 from the Gamecock 14, Nussmeier’s pass to Anderson was incomplete, but a flag for pass interference was called, giving LSU a first down at the 2-yard line. However, on 4th-and-1 from the 1, Nussmeier’s pass to Williams was incomplete, forcing a turnover on down.

On the next possession, after LSU’s defense forced a quick stop, the freshman Durham continued to flash, rushing for a 20-yard gain to the USC 25. On the next play, Nussmeier found Mason Tayor for a 16-yard gain to the USC 9. Durham then rush left for a 9-yard touchdown score, cutting the deficit to 24-24 with 6:47 to play in the third quarter. LSU elected to go for two-point conversion, but was not successful.

LSU captured its first lead of the game as Nussmeier found Taylor for a 2-yard touchdown completion, putting the Tigers up 29-24 with 14:56 to play in the contest. It capped off a 10 play, 80-yard drive that spanned five minutes and three seconds.

In a game full of explosive plays, Sanders provided another one with a 66-yard rushing touchdown on a defensive bust for the Tigers, giving the Gamecocks the lead back, 30-29, with 13:51 to play. South Carolina tried for two points, but the attempt was no good.

On 1st-and-10 from the LSU 25, an unexpected snap hit Nussmeier in the chest, causing a fumble, which was recovered by Dylan Stewart of South Carolina at the LSU 24. However, the Tigers were able to force a quick stop and a field goal, making it 33-29 with 10:34 remaining.

With 7:02 to play, Robby Ashford was sacked for a loss of 12 yards as Swinson, the defensive end from Douglasville, Ga., caused a fumbled, which was recovered by Major Burns at the USC 12. However, on 3rd-and-11, Nussmeier threw an interception to Nick Emmanwori, negating the chance at points.

With 2:03 to play, Nussmeier found Lacy on 1st-and-10 from the USC 33 for a critical 29-yard pickup, advancing the ball down to the USC 4. The sixth-year senior Williams would put the Tigers back on top with 1:12 remaining with a 2-yard touchdown rush, giving LSU the 36-33 lead.

With the chance to for overtime on the line, Alex Herrera’s 49-yard attempt with five seconds to play was wide left, giving LSU the 36-33 victory in Columbia.

Colin Kaepernick wants to play flag football at 2028 Olympics – NBC 6 South Florida

Colin Kaepernick still wants to play football in the NFL…and in the Olympics?

The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, who last played in the NFL in 2016, was asked about the possibility of playing flag football at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

“Hopefully we’ll be out there,” Kaepernick told Sky Sports. “We’re gonna work on some things, see if we can make it in there. But we’d love to be out there.”

The non-contact sport, in which a stop is made by ripping off one of the flags attached to a belt on a ball carrier’s waist, will make its Olympic debut in 2028. Some NFL players have already expressed interest in playing, and the league reportedly is encouraging active players to compete.

The 36-year-old Kaepernick has not played in the NFL since parting ways with the 49ers in 2016 after he began kneeling during the playing of the national anthem in protest of racial injustice.

“We’re still training, still pushing,” he told Sky Sports. “So, hopefully. We just gotta get one of these team owners to open up.”

Kaepernick, drafted by San Francisco in the second round of the 2011 draft, spent his entire six-year NFL career with the 49ers. He led the 49ers to Super Bowl XLVII, where they lost to the Baltimore Ravens by a score of 34-31.

Kaepernick has a 28-30 career record in the regular season with 12,271 passing yards, 72 passing touchdowns, 30 interceptions, a 59.8 completion percentage and 13 rushing touchdowns.

The 49ers, in Kaepernick’s final season with the team in 2016, went just 1-10 in his starts.

He has been unable to garner much interest around the league since, despite some high-profile workouts and open auditions.

He met with the Seattle Seahawks in 2017 and worked out for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022, but both teams declined to sign him. Kaepernick wrote a letter to the New York Jets last season requesting to join the practice squad after their recently-acquired quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffered a season-ending Achilles injury on the team’s first offensive possession.

“I mean, it’s something I’ve trained my whole life for,” Kaepernick told Sky Sports when asked what it would mean to return to the NFL. “So, to be able to step back on the field, I think that would be a major moment, a major accomplishment for me. Also, I think it’s something that I can bring a lot to a team and help them win a championship.”

Team USA men’s basketball cruises to win in rematch with South Sudan

After barely escaping with a one-point win against South Sudan in an exhibition this month, the U.S. had a much easier time Wednesday.

The U.S. cruised to a 103-86 win, moving to 2-0 in group play. South Sudan fell to 1-1 with the loss.

The U.S. led for the vast majority of the contest. After a little bit of back-and-forth action early, it took a lead with just under four minutes to go in the first quarter and would hold on to it for the rest of the night.

Bam Adebayo was the star. Coming off the bench, he scored 18 points on 8-for-10 shooting, draining two 3s and adding seven rebounds and two blocks for good measure. It was a balanced effort elsewhere, with five other players scoring in double digits.

It was a little bit of a different look for the U.S. compared with its opener against Serbia. In that game, Joel Embiid started at center, while Jayson Tatum notably never made it on the court. Against South Sudan, coach Steve Kerr started Anthony Davis in place of Embiid and Tatum in place of Jrue Holiday.

Embiid didn’t play at all, while Holiday was part of the bench group that included Adebayo, Kevin Durant, Derrick White and Anthony Edwards. Tyrese Haliburton also saw his first action of the Olympics, meaning 11 players earned minutes Wednesday.

Outside of a very brief injury scare to Davis in the second and a South Sudan run that cut the lead from 21 points to 10 in the third, the U.S. didn’t run into any trouble. It was quite a reversal from the exhibition the two countries played on July 20. In that game, the U.S. squeaked out a 101-100 win thanks to a LeBron James layup in the waning seconds.

South Sudan had the U.S.’ full focus Wednesday, and it was overwhelming. The ball movement was popping offensively, while the defense was stifling, particularly that of the second unit led by Adebayo, Holiday and White. South Sudan turned the ball over 19 times, a big no-no as the U.S. thrives in the open floor.

Coupled with a blowout win over Serbia to start group play, the U.S. has been taking care of business to start the Paris Games. It will wrap up group play against Puerto Rico on Saturday.
