While Allen said that Carr will return to the starting lineup upon his return and didn’t rule out Haener starting at some point, he said Rattler needn’t concern himself with having a short leash Sunday.
“I think you’ve got to let the guy go in there and play,” Allen said. “We’re not going into this game saying, ‘You make a mistake and we’re going to pull you.’ He’s going in to play. He’s going to start, he’s going to lead the team, and we go from there.
“You don’t want to go into this thing like it’s this major ordeal. He’s the next man up, get an opportunity to go in and play. Go play and have fun, do what you’ve been trained to do.
“I think sometimes you can make too big a deal of it and create more of an issue than you really need to. We’ll go through the things that he needs to know, we’ll get him prepared and then we’ll let him go out there and play.”
Though Rattler had been the emergency quarterback for five games, Allen said Rattler had impressed in practice.
“He goes against us on the ‘show” team every day and he’s got athletic ability, he can throw the ball, he’s accurate, he creates some plays on the scout team,” Allen said. “I just think this is a guy who has a lot of ability and certainly he’s a rookie, so we know that we’re going to have some challenges that go along with that, but I think we’ll have a good plan for him and we’ll be excited about going out and playing.
“He’s done a good job for us on the show team. He’s made some really good plays against our defense. He’s made some awkward throws and his mobility has been good.
“It’s going to be incumbent on us as coaches to put him in the best position to be successful.”
TAMPA, Fla. – A man who gained notoriety for riding out Hurricane Helene on a boat docked just off Bayshore Blvd. has yet to hunker down in a shelter ahead of Hurricane Milton.
During Tampa Mayor Jane Castor’s final press conference ahead of the storm, she said that Tampa’s Lt. Dan was rescued on Wednesday morning and was in a shelter.
“If we can get Lt. Dan to go into a shelter, we can get anybody to do that,” Castor said.
However, FOX 13’s Ariel Plasencia spoke with Lt. Dan, who was on his boat, docked off Bayshore Blvd. shortly before 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
According to Plasencia, he said he was on the phone with people talking about his cryptocurrency, and, because of the direction of the wind, he is planning to slightly adjust the angle of his boat. She added that while it was tough to communicate due to the loud wind, Lt. Dan said nothing about leaving as he poked his head out of the boat.
TAMPA, FLORIDA – OCTOBER 09: Tampa police try to persuade a local resident who is living on his boat known as Jay and nicknamed “Lieutenant Dan,” to leave for his safety as Tampa prepares for the arrival of Hurricane Milton on October 09, 2024 in Tam
Lt. Dan got his ten minutes of fame thanks to a Temple Terrace TikTok user who featured him in a series of videos before, during and after Hurricane Helene.
The TikTok videos have millions of views.

Before Hurricane Helene skirted the west coast of Florida, Lt. Dan was caught on camera telling Hurricane Helene ‘You want me? Come and get me,’ before the storm impacts were felt in the Bay Area.
As the weather in Tampa deteriorated, Lt. Dan could be seen on his boat as the water began to rise and rain began to fall.
When Hurricane Milton formed and trekked toward Florida, videos of Lt. Dan began popping up again.
Earlier this week, Lt. Dan said that God told him to go out there and get on a boat. He said he was going to ride out Hurricane Milton and was not going to wear a life jacket.

In a TikTok video, he joked that he had room onboard for a lady.
Tampa’s chief of police visited Lt. Dan earlier this week and told him about the evacuation orders and the shelters the city opened.
Hurricane Milton is a powerful hurricane that is expected to make landfall Wednesday night or early Thursday morning along Florida’s west coast.
The Atlanta Falcons were down three points, with less than two minutes left and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in possession of the ball. You’ll never guess what happened next.
After a furious drive to send the game to OT, the Falcons stunned their NFC South foes on a 45-yard KhaDarel Hodge touchdown to win 36-30. The biggest star of the night: Kirk Cousins, who shook off a slow start to his Falcons tenure with one of the biggest nights of his career.
The former Minnesota Vikings starter finished 42-of-58 for 509 passing yards, four touchdowns and an interception. He picked the Bucs apart in the drive to force OT, then hammered them again after the Falcons won the second coin toss.
The Falcons’ comeback erased an excellent night for Baker Mayfield, who was 19-of-24 for 180 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. The Tampa Bay run game also combined for 160 yards on 26 attempts. But some late missteps spelled doom for a team that no longer leads the NFC South.
Here’s how it all played out on Yahoo Sports.
Live69 updates
Kirk Cousins: 42-of-58 for 509 yards, four touchdowns and a pick, plus a game-tying drive with a minute left and no timeouts then the game-winning drive. It’s been a rough start for him, but he made a statement tonight.
TOUCHDOWN: Falcons stun the Bucs in OT
KhaDarel Hodge breaks a tackle and finds an opening the Tampa Bay defense to steal a win. What an ending, what a game.
Uh oh. Drake London made a big catch on third down, but he’s still down after taking a big hit. He was evaluated for a concussion earlier this game.
He’s at 154 yards now, but that may be it.
Falcons win the toss to open OT and can win it here.
The Falcons get called for delay of game, pushing Koo’s attempt to 52 yards. He makes it.
To overtime we go.
Another pass to London gains 15 yards and Kirk Cousins spikes the ball with one second left. In comes Younghoe Koo to force OT.
The Falcons are in Tampa Bay territory…
The Falcons get the stop and the ball back, but burn through three timeouts. They’ll take over on their own 20 with 1:14 left and three points to score.
INTERCEPTION: Bucs get the pick on 4th-and-15
The Falcons do go for it and… Kirk Cousins throws a pick to Lavonte David. Atlanta still has three timeouts, but the Bucs are sitting pretty here.
We’ve reached the two-minute warning, with the Falcons facing a 4th-and-15 and 80 yards from the end zone. Do they go for it?
TURNOVER: Falcons recover a Bucky Irving fumble
Just as it was looking bleak, Jessie Bates punches the ball out of Bucs rookie Bucky Irving’s hands and the Falcons recover it. The Falcons get the ball back in their territory with 2:50 left and down by three.
This can’t happen in this situation.
Oh, that was a brutal drop from Darnell Mooney. Kirk Cousins throws him wide open on 3rd-and-6 and he just whiffs on the catch. And now the Falcons’ 54-yard field goal attempt is blocked.
Drake London is up to eight catches on nine targets for a season-high 110 yards and a touchdown.
Kirk Cousins’ third down pass intended for Mooney falls incomplete. Bucs defender got there too early though. That’s DPI. New life for the Falcons.
FIELD GOAL: Chase McLaughlin good from 53 to give Bucs the lead
The Bucs are on top again as McLaughlin remains automatic. Now to see how the Falcons respond.
4th-down risk pays off with a Falcons TD
Falcons were running the ball well, but stalled out at the Tampa Bay 12 after Tyler Allgeier was tackled for a 2-yard loss.
But Atlanta decides to go for it on 4th-and-4 and Kirk Cousins hits Darnell Mooney for a 12-yard touchdown pass. Mooney had the first down, but then turned to shake off Tykee Smith and got to the end zone.
We are tied 27–27.
Tampa Bay 27, Atlanta 20 after 3 quarters
The Falcons finish off the 3rd quarter strong with a 22-yard catch and run by Ray Ray McCloud, followed by a 29-yard dash by Bijan Robinson.
Atlanta is at the Tampa Bay 46-yard line as the fourth quarter begins.
FIELD GOAL: Buccaneers respond with their own FG, but Baker Mayfield may be hurt
The Buccaneers have had little trouble moving the ball tonight. They respond to the Falcons FG with a nine-play, 56-yard drive, but finish short of another TD. Baker Mayfield also limped off the field after taking a third-down sack.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers hit the road in Week Five for their second away game, this time to Atlanta to begin a stretch of three intra-division games in four weeks. It’s also the Buccaneers’ first primetime game of 2024, set for Thursday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. To find out how to watch, listen and livestream the game, click here.
The game is the first intra-division contest for the Buccaneers, and those games within the NFC South tend to take on a life of their own. There are plenty of reasons to like both teams, according to the analysts. Some cited O-Line issues for the Buccaneers, while others noted that Atlanta has the worst pressure rate on opposing quarterbacks in the league. Atlanta’s two-headed rushing attack was a deciding factor for one analyst, but another one noted that Tampa Bay draws motivation from being underdogs. Another analyst noted that short-week Thursday games often turn into “slogs” and thinks the Bucs have more team chemistry to handle that type of game.
The Buccaneers are 1.5-point underdogs on the road but they have plenty of support from the experts. Here’s what some of them are saying:
NFL.com – Four out of five analysts side with the Buccaneers
ESPN.com – ESPN amassed ELEVEN analysts, and they’ve gone 6-5 in favor of the Falcons
CBSSports.com – Pete Prisco calls this an “enormous game” for the NFC South and sides with the Bucs
USA Today – It’s split right down the middle of six predictors
Bleacher Report – Bucs pull seven of eight picks in this assemblage of experts
Pro Football Talk – This time, Mike Florio and Chris Simms agree on the Buccaneers
Sports Illustrated – Only one dissenter leans Falcons among six analysts
Sporting News – A revenge-game win for Raheem Morris? That’s what Vinnie Iyer foresees
After losing to the Lions twice last season, once at home Week 6 and another in the Divisional Round of the playoffs at Ford Field that ended their season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers exacted a bit of revenge Sunday by downing Detroit, 20-16, at Ford Field.
Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield continued his terrific start to the season with a passing touchdown and one rushing. He made multiple plays with his legs to escape pressure and extend plays.
Detroit’s offense was never really able to get on track for the second straight week. Detroit settled for too many field goals and were just 1-for-7 in the red zone, which was the big story of the game for Detroit in a close loss. The Lions were a top three offense in the red zone last year, but credit the Bucs for winning that battle Sunday.
Trailing 20-16 with 5 minutes, 12 seconds on the clock and starting at their own 18-yard line, quarterback Jared Goff drove the Lions down to the Bucs’ 10-yard line with a little more than a minute left but couldn’t convert on 4th & 8 as the Lions turned it over.
After the defense forced a three-and-out, Detroit got the ball back at the Bucs’ 44-yard line with 33 seconds left. Detroit got as far as the Bucs’ 28-yard line before turning it over on downs again without a shot to the end zone as they fell to 1-1 on the season.
