Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa Will Return in Week 8: Report

The Miami Dolphins lost quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in Week 2 after the signal caller suffered his third official concussion. Tagovailoa had been attempting to pick up a first down in the third quarter against the Buffalo Bills and ran head-first into Bills safety Damar Hamlin.

Tagovailoa was clearly hurt and began to make the same “fencing posture” he did in 2022 when he took a big shot to the head against the Cincinnati Bengals. After another concussion that was reminiscent of the incident in 2022, many called on Tagovailoa to retire from the NFL.

Despite the pleas for his personal safety, Tagovailoa revealed he had no intentions of retiring. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel also revealed that Tagovailoa would consult with outside neurologists to determine his playing future.

McDaniel reiterated that Tagovailoa would approach the recovery in the same way that he did in 2022. Tagovailoa met with outside neurologists during Week 3 and has now received a massive update on his playing future.

According to Dolphins beat reporter Adam Beasley by way of NFL insider Adam Schefter, “Adam Schefter reports Tua Tagovailoa is “symptom-free” and appears to be on track to return to the field as soon as Week 8.”

The Dolphins initially did not place Tagovailoa on injured reserve but eventually chose to do so to give the quarterback time to consult with outside doctors. Due to his IR status, Tagovailoa is not eligible to return until Week 8. Now, it appears that is exactly what he plans to do.

The above X post indicates that Tagovailoa is “symptom free” and will be back under center when the Dolphins take on the Arizona Cardinals. This news should make Dolphins fans plenty happy, as the offense has sputtered since Tagovailoa went down.

Backup quarterback Skylar Thompson took over in Week 2 when Tagovailoa took over. He did little to help the team come back against the Bills. During Week 3, the Dolphins opted to give Thompson a full start. The offensive line did not hold up, resulting in Thompson suffering a chest injury.

The Dolphins were then forced to use longtime veteran Tim Boyle. Boyle also could not rally the team, and Miami dropped to 1-2 on the season after beating handily beaten by the Seattle Seahawks.

The Dolphins had signed Tyler “Snoop” Huntley from the Baltimore Ravens practice squad, but he was given the “emergency third quarterback” designation for Week 3.

The Dolphins chose to start Huntley against the Titans, but another loss might paint a bleak picture for the offensive attack until Tagovailoa can return.

Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa sustains concussion in 31-10 loss to Bills

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa left Thursday’s game against the Buffalo Bills with a concussion, the team announced.

After a fourth-down run in the third quarter, Tagovailoa collided head-first with Bills safety Damar Hamlin as he went to the ground. Tagovailoa’s teammates immediately called for trainers as he lay on the field before he eventually walked off under his own power.

Tagovailoa’s wife and two children met him in the Dolphins’ locker room, according to Amazon’s Kaylee Hartung.

“We’re told he’s conscious, awake and alert, just as he was walking off this field on his own power,” Hartung said on the broadcast after the game, a 31-10 Bills win. “We’re also told he has full movement in his extremities.”

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said he saw Tagovailoa in the locker room and said he was “in good spirits.” Asked about a possible timeline for Tagovailoa’s return, McDaniel refused to answer.

“Right now it’s more about getting a proper procedural evaluation tomorrow and then taking it one day at a time,” McDaniel said postgame. “The furthest thing from my mind is what is the timeline. We just need to evaluate. I’m just worried about my teammate like the rest of the guys are. We’ll get more information tomorrow and then take it day by day from there.”

Last season was the only year in his career in which Tagovailoa appeared in every game for the Dolphins. In 2022, he played in just 13 games as he sustained two concussions.

Against the Cincinnati Bengals in a Thursday night game that season, Tagovailoa suffered his first concussion, exhibiting the “fencing response” after his head hit the ground on a sack.

The concussion Tagovailoa sustained against the Bengals came on the heels of a controversy in which the NFL Players Association believed he wasn’t properly evaluated for a concussion four days earlier in a game against Buffalo. Tagovailoa briefly left that game with an injury but wasn’t checked for a concussion, eventually leading the NFLPA to fire the independent neurotrauma consultant in charge of pulling players with suspected head injuries off the field. The controversy resulted in a new concussion protocol for NFL players.

Tagovailoa was concussed again later in the year in a game against the Green Bay Packers, though he wasn’t diagnosed with a concussion until the day after the game.

Tagovailoa said before this season that his parents asked him to consider retirement after his concussions in 2022 but that he opted to keep playing after having consulted a doctor.

“We went and seen a doctor. … I got to get all the information that I needed to hear from on whether it was a good idea or wasn’t a good idea” to keep playing, Tagovailoa told Meadowlark Media’s Dan Le Batard. He added his parents supported his decision to keep playing.

Tagovailoa is in his fifth season with the Dolphins, who selected him with the fifth pick in the 2020 draft. He led the NFL with 4,624 passing yards last season. Entering Thursday, he was 33-19 in his career, with 82 touchdowns and 37 interceptions.

In July, the Dolphins signed Tagovailoa to a four-year, $212.4 million contract, with $167 million guaranteed.

Skylar Thompson, who replaced Tagovailoa at quarterback Thursday, said seeing what happened to his teammate “makes me sick.”

“In my position, you never want to have your opportunity come with something like that,” he said after the game. “I have a lot of love for Tua. I’ve built a great relationship with him. You care about the person more than the player. Everybody in the organization would say the same thing. Just really praying for Tua and hopefully everything will come out all right.”

Buffalo cruises to win; Tua Tagovailoa exits with concussion

The Buffalo Bills won their Thursday night matchup with the Miami Dolphins 31-10, a game in which Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa left with a concussion in the third quarter.

Tagovailoa was trying to convert a fourth down with Miami trailing by 21 points when he collided head first with Bills safety Damar Hamlin. Tagovailoa’s teammates immediately called for trainers as he lay on the ground. He walked off under his own power and was ruled out.

Things were not going well for the Dolphins even before the injury.

Buffalo jumped out to a 31-10 lead thanks mostly to three interceptions by Tagovailoa. Running back James Cook scored three touchdowns for the Bills — two on the ground and one in the air. Quarterback Josh Allen had a simple night, completing 13 of 19 passes for 139 yards. Cook ran for 78 yards on 11 carries.

The attention will now turn to Tagovailoa, who has a history with concussions. He sustained two during the Dolphins’ 2022 season and was suspected of having sustained another one before both — a controversy that resulted in the NFL and the NFL Players Associationrevamping the league’s concussion protocol midseason.

The Bills improved to 2-0 with the win and will face the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 3.

Miami fell to 1-1 and will play Seattle on Sept. 22.

Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa leaves field with concussion after collision with Bills’ Damar Hamlin

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was ruled out of Thursday night’s game with the Buffalo Bills because of a concussion after colliding with defensive back Damar Hamlin and hitting the back of his head against the turf.

Tagovailoa, who has a history of dealing with head injuries, remained down for about two minutes before getting to his feet and walking to the sideline after the play in the third quarter. He made his way to the tunnel not long afterward, looking into the stands, appeared to smile and departed for the locker room.

The Dolphins needed almost no time before announcing it was a concussion. The team said he had two during the 2022 season, and Tagovailoa was diagnosed with another concussion when he was a college player at Alabama.

“I have a lot of love for Tua, built a great relationship with him,” said quarterback Skylar Thompson, who replaced Tagovailoa after the injury. “You care about the person more than the player and everybody in the organization would say the same thing. Just really praying for Tua and hopefully everything will come out all right.”

Tagovailoa positioned himself for a big pay bump with an injury-free and productive 2023. He threw for 29 touchdowns and a league-best 4,624 yards.

He signed a four-year, $212 million extension before this season and was the NFL’s leading passer in Week 1 this season. Tagovailoa left the game with the Dolphins trailing 31-10, which held as the final score.

“If you know Tua outside of football, you can’t help but feel for him,” Bills quarterback Josh Allen said on Amazon following the game. “He’s a great football player but he’s an even greater human being. He’s one of the best humans on the planet. I’ve got a lot of love for him and I’m just praying for him and his family, hoping everything’s OK. But it’s tough, man. This game of football that we play, it’s got its highs and it’s got its lows — and this is one of the lows.”

Tagovailoa was hurt on a fourth-down keeper with about 4:30 left in the third. He went straight ahead into Hamlin and did not slide, leading with his right shoulder instead.

He wound up on his back, both his hands in the air and Bills players immediately pointed at Tagovailoa as if to suggest there was an injury. Dolphins center Aaron Brewer quickly did the same, waving to the sideline.

Tagovailoa appeared to be making a fist with his right hand as he lay on the ground. It was movement consistent with something that is referred to as the “fencing response,” which can be common after a traumatic brain injury.

Tagovailoa eventually got to his feet. Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel grabbed the side of his quarterback’s head and gave him a kiss on the cheek as Tagovailoa departed.

Hamlin was the player who suffered a cardiac arrest after making a tackle during a Monday night game in January 2023 at Cincinnati, causing the NFL to suspend a pivotal game that quickly lost significance in the aftermath of a scary scene that unfolded in front of a national television audience.

“I love Tua on and off the football field,” Bills edge Von Miller said. “I’m a huge fan of him. I can empathize and sympathize with him because I’ve been there. I wish him the best.”

Tagovailoa’s history with concussions — and how he has since worked to avoid them — is a huge part of the story of his career, and now comes to the forefront once again.

He had at least two concussions during the 2022 season. He was hurt in a Week 3 game against Buffalo and cleared concussion protocol, though he appeared disoriented on that play but returned to the game.

The NFL later changed its concussion protocol to mandate that if a player shows possible concussion symptoms — including a lack of balance or stability — he must sit out the rest of the game.

Less than a week later, in a Thursday night game at Cincinnati, Tagovailoa was concussed on a scary hit that briefly knocked him unconscious and led to him being taken off the field on a stretcher.

His second known concussion of that season came in a December game against Green Bay, and he didn’t play for the rest of the 2022 season.

Going into last season, Tagovailoa added muscle and spent time studying jiu-jitsu in an effort to learn how to fall more safely and try to protect himself against further injury.
