Manchester United were left to rue missed chances and a truly baffling refereeing decision as the lost 2-1 at West Ham on Sunday to heap further pressure on Erik ten Hag.
Ten Hag’s side missed several glorious chances in the first half and then went behind in the second half as Crysencio Summerville finished for West Ham. Casemiro equalized soon after but in stoppage time VAR asked referee David Coote to go to the monitor for a possible foul by Matthijs de Ligt on Danny Ings and the referee awarded a penalty which Jarrod Bowen scored to win if for West Ham.
With the much-needed win Julen Lopetegui’s Hammers move to 11 points for the season as they move above Man United, who are also on 11 points and have now lost three of their first nine games.
Man United left to rue massive missed chances, once again
Okay, so it was never a penalty kick on De Ligt which ultimately lost Manchester United the game in second half stoppage time. But they should have been 3-0 up at half time, at least, as once again missing big chances came back to bite them. Erik ten Hag looked on in disbelief as Dalot missed an open goal, Fernandes missed a glorious chance, Garnacho missed another easy chance and hit the bar. That was all in the first half as Man United tore West Ham apart. But the second half was different as West Ham sat deeper, made a triple sub at half time which worked a treat to shore things up and United no longer got behind them with one long ball forward. All of the post-game talk will be about David Coote going to the monitor after VAR asked him to and awarding that controversial penalty kick, but Man United should never have been in the position to let that decision be so pivotal. Once again they missed big chances and as the pressure builds on Erik ten Hag, there’s only so much he can do. He’s setting this team up to create big chances and get in on goal but his players aren’t finishing and have scored just eight goals in nine games in the Premier League this season. Their xG total says they should have scored close to 15 and are the least clinical team in the league when it comes to xG to actual goals. That is why they’re in the mess they are in and are already six points off the top four.

Andre Onana comes sliding out to get the ball and just as he gets there in front of Michail Antonio he gets a clip on the head from the West Ham forward he can’t get out of the way. After lengthy checks, Onana is okay to continue and Antonio apologies for the incident. It was purely accidental and it’s great to see Onana is okay to continue.

Somehow Man United aren’t ahead, but don’t ask me how. From Garnacho hitting the bar and missing a glorious chance, to Bruno Fernandes missing a big chance, Diogo Dalot missing an open goal and both Casemiro and Hojlund denied, United could be out of sight by now. But West Ham are somehow level and have had the odd chance from crosses and counters. West Ham have been very poor defensively and United continue to open them up with one long ball over the top. Surely the Hammers won’t be that open in the second half.

That is a top stop from Fabianski. Eriksen whips in a free kick and Casemiro flicks a header on which looks destined for the far corner but the veteran goalkeeper palms it away and West Ham clear.

He knocks it past Fabianski and has an open goal but he loops his shot off target with West Ham defenders rushing to get back on the line. Dalot has got it all wrong there. Yet another glorious opportunity wasted by Man United.

West Ham are all over the place defensively as Hojlund turns and his low shot is saved well by Fabianski. Moments later a cross finds Bruno Fernandes totally unmarked but he heads wide from eight yards out. He should be scoring. United could have scored four already inside the first 15 minutes!

United once again are in but Garnacho curls his shot wide of the far post. Again, he should be scoring. West Ham have been let off the hook twice early on.

But to have any hope of surviving the intense, choppy seas of festive football on the horizon, Manchester Untied are going to have to score some bloody goals. Only three sides have scored fewer goals than Man United (7) though 8 games, and those sides currently sit 18th, 17th and 19th in the Premier League table. United, for their part, are only slightly better off in 12th with a -2 goal difference. Alejandro Garnacho has 2 goals and Bruno Fernandes has 2 assists, but no one else in the team has more than one goal or assist thus far.
West Ham (15th – 8 points) are off to a rather poor start of their own, as only three sides have conceded more goals than the Hammer (15) through 8 games, perhaps hitting rock bottom last weekend as they were beaten 4-1 by rivals Tottenham and star attacker Mohammed Kudus was sent off for violent conduct which is expected to lead to a lengthier ban. The defensive woes are hardly new, though, as Julen Lopetegui took over in the summer and inherited a team from David Moyes that conceded 74 times in 38 games last season (4th-most). Max Kilman ($51 million) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka ($19 million) were signed in a busy summer transfer window, but the defensive issues persist nonetheless.

Ethan Pinnock was on target as Brentford fell to a 2-1 defeat to Manchester United in the Premier League.
The defender’s thumping header put the Bees in front during the final seconds of the first half, but United were the better side after the break and hit back through Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Højlund.
The visitors, unchanged after a 5-3 win over Wolves last time out but with Yoane Wissa among the substitutes, created the first opening at Old Trafford.
Keane Lewis-Potter and Vitaly Janelt combined down the left and Jonny Evans got a toe to the latter’s dangerous delivery with Kevin Schade lurking inside the six-yard box.
Kristoffer Ajer’s cross-field pass presented Bryan Mbeumo with a first opportunity to run at Lisandro Martínez. The forward advanced up the touchline, cut inside and let fly from 20 yards but his shot cleared the crossbar.
On 16 minutes, Pinnock’s long throw was headed away by Casemiro and the ball dropped kindly for Mikkel Damsgaard on the edge of the area, but his volley lacked conviction and was lost in the crowd between the midfielder and Andre Onana’s goal.
There was a moment of panic for the Bees fans midway through the first half. Christian Eriksen’s corner, delivered to the near post, was met by Martínez and Mark Flekken allowed the ball to escape his clutches. Højlund poked towards goal and Flekken dropped down quickly to claw the ball off the line.
The keeper was tested again moments later, diving to low his right to push Garnacho’s powerful drive out for another United corner.
At the other end, captain Christian Nørgaard took Mbeumo’s short pass on the turn and tested Onana with a dipping, long-range effort.
On 34 minutes Eriksen blazed over the bar from close range, but the referee had already stopped play for Casemiro’s foul on Nathan Collins.
Soon after, Casemiro was teed up by Bruno Fernandes on the edge of the box, but his shot was wild and landed in the Stretford End.
Garnacho then brought down Rashford’s superb switch and blazed wide from the left of the area under pressure from Sepp van den Berg who did just enough to narrow the angle.
Five minutes before the break, Højlund pulled wide having been found by Garnacho. The pair combined again seconds later and Garnacho’s shot from a similar position, slowed by a slight deflection off van den Berg, was parried by Flekken and cleared to safety by Pinnock.
Pinnock then showed his quality at the other end. His early cross was headed well wide by Schade, before he gave Brentford the lead in the final seconds of the half.
The centre-back pulled away from marker Diogo Dalot and timed his leap to perfection to meet Damsgaard’s in-swinging corner with a thumping header that whizzed beyond Onana and into the top corner.
The home fans voiced their discontent as the sides disappeared down the tunnel as Matthijs de Ligt had been off the pitch for the set-piece due to a head injury, but the defender’s absence should take nothing away from another well-worked routine from the west Londoners.
The hosts came flying out after the half-time break. Just seconds after Pinnock had prevented Højlund from pulling the trigger from close range, Rashford picked out Garnacho with a deep cross and the winger beat Flekken with a controlled, first-time finish.
United and Garnacho immediately went in search of another, with the winger’s long-range effort following a burst down the left tipped around the post by Flekken.
Casemiro and Fernandes were both denied by Flekken as Erik ten Hag’s side maintained the pressure.
But United weren’t to be denied a second goal. Eriksen’s piercing pass was cleverly flicked on by Fernandes into the path of Højlund, who advanced into the box and lifted the ball over the keeper.
Flekken raced off his line and made a sprawling stop to deny Dalot, after the full-back had capitalised on Schade’s slip to latch on to Onana’s long ping.
Casemiro’s speculative shot flashed wide of Flekken’s left post as United looked to extend their advantage.
De Ligt’s cross from the right broke kindly for Garnacho and the forward’s first-time effort, again from distance, was held by Flekken. Collins then made a brave block to prevent Rashford’s powerful strike from finding the target.
Substitute Yehor Yarmoliuk lashed over the bar after a quick Brentford counter, but the assistant’s flag was raised for a Wissa offside in the build-up.
Fábio Carvalho dragged wide after some pinball in the United box, and Fernandes’s shot was blocked by Flekken at his near post, as the game ended in defeat for the Bees.

Frank: Not enough of our players hit a high enough level
Brentford head coach Thomas Frank was disappointed with the Bees’ second-half performance at Old Trafford, admitting he “needed more” from his players after a solid opening 45 minutes.
“It was a good first half, I was very happy with that, I thought we were the better team in that period of the game against a good team,” he stated.
“We went 1-0 up, but it’s so frustrating and annoying that they scored after two minutes of the second half – if they don’t do that, you don’t know what would have happened. But fair play to Manchester United.
“I thought that we were way too passive. But we are at Old Trafford, they have some top players.
“After the first goal, I felt like we lacked a bit more character. If we want to win here, we need more. Unfortunately, not enough of our players hit a high enough level in the second half.”
Damsgaard: We didn’t keep the intensity in the second half
Mikkel Damsgaard, who assisted Ethan Pinnock’s header in first-half stoppage time, was left frustrated by United’s turnaround after the break.
“It’s disappointing to lose this game, and that we didn’t keep a clean sheet and the intensity in the second half,” said the midfielder.
On the corner that led to the opening goal of the game, Damsgaard added: “[Pinnock] is amazing; if you can hit him, you will score. We have a big focus on being good at set-pieces and we’ve been able to score from them in our last two games, which is amazing.”
A day after Erik ten Hag had gone on the attack over reports of his demise, his Manchester United players used their own sense of injustice to fuel a fightback that will have greater influence over the narrative at Old Trafford.
A manager under scrutiny is entitled to counter-punch and in his press conference ahead of facing Brentford, Ten Hag accused journalists of writing fairytales about his future. Equating the press pack with Hans Christian Andersen is a sure-fire way to endear yourself to the fanbase and, having been questioned for much of his two-year reign, Ten Hag doubtless feels he has to project total strength in crucial moments.
Words only go so far, though. Results are what will dictate the reality of Ten Hag’s tenure.
Beating Thomas Frank’s side at home on Saturday was a start but it didn’t come without jeopardy. Indeed, at its core was an episode of gore that imbued Ten Hag and his players with a burning desire to turn things around. That it featured one of the managers’ key signings, whose leadership origin story dates back to their days together at Ajax, only heightened the drama.
Early in the game, Matthijs de Ligt took a novel approach to defending by planting his head into the knee of opponent Kevin Schade as the ball bounced outside the area. With blood pouring down his face, looking like he had made an early start to his Halloween costume, as a result of that collision, De Ligt was forced to the sidelines for treatment as the game continued.
United’s medics chose to try to stem the bleeding by clogging the wound with a jelly-like substance rather than wrapping a bandage around the Dutchman’s head, due to the awkward position of the cut. But into first-half stoppage time, referee Sam Barrott ushered De Ligt off again as it reopened. Rules ban players from continuing with bloody gashes.
De Ligt returned, only to be directed off again by Barrott when Brentford won a corner in the final seconds before the break. De Ligt flapped his arms in irritation and then, as he was being tended to, watched Ethan Pinnock escape Diogo Dalot to head in the opening goal. De Ligt swivelled and booted one of the pitchside balls into the advertising boards.
Afterwards, Ten Hag said: “It was dry blood, so he was already treated for the injury. I didn’t understand why he was sent off. A huge moment, because Brentford is very good at corners and you miss one of your best headers of the ball.”

The blood’s viscosity was not a consideration for Barrott but United complained at the timing and circumstance of the official’s implementation of the rules. Ten Hag’s assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy steps down the touchline to confront fourth official Gavin Ward. Ten Hag directed his anger that way too. Both received guarantees from Barrott in response.
“Definitely we were mad and angry at half-time,” said Ten Hag afterwards. “We felt some injustice and used it as fuel.”
Blame for the concession could go to United’s defending of Mikkel Damsgaard’s corner, or the physios for failing to stop the bleeding the first time, or Ten Hag for declining to simply replace De Ligt. Victor Lindelof immediately got ready to come on when De Ligt initially went down, but Ten Hag was told by his compatriot that he could continue.
There is trust between them since Ten Hag made De Ligt his captain, at age 18, in an intriguing manner.
The pivotal date is March 4, 2018, as Ajax travelled to Vitesse Arnhem needing to win to keep up faint hopes of catching PSV Eindhoven in the Eredivisie title race. Ten Hag had taken over early in the January, winning four of his first six league matches and drawing two others.
But he tasted his first Ajax loss that day in Arnhem, to a side who had a young Mason Mount, now of United, playing for them on loan from Chelsea. As people began to drift into the Ajax changing room following the 3-2 defeat, several players talked about what had gone against them. They complained about the officiating, which they felt had been skewed towards the hosts. Some pointed out the pitch was awkward to play on. Others felt the weather had been detrimental to their style.
Then De Ligt entered and he did not like what he was hearing. Despite his teenage years, he told his older team-mates to stop blaming other factors and instead look at their own performances, as he would do. He said the only way Ajax would become champions is by improving individually and collectively, rather than pointing fingers.

De Ligt had broken into the side the previous season and started the Europa League final, against United, as a 17-year-old, so had some status but this was still a bold move given his age. Ten Hag was greatly impressed by what he considered to be a winning mentality and had an idea.
The next day, having slept on it, he told his coaches that he was going to make the kid captain of Ajax, feeling his unflinching attitude should be recognised. During that morning’s training session, the manager informed his squad.
Six days later, De Ligt led Ajax out at Johan Cruyff Arena for the visit of Heerenveen and opened the scoring with a header after winning the ball in midfield and continuing his run into the box to meet a floated pass by Hakim Ziyech. Ajax went on to win 4-1, although they ultimately lost the title race to PSV.
The next season was one of the best in Ajax’s modern history. They won the Eredivisie and KNVB Cup (Dutch football’s FA Cup equivalent), and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League, knocking out Real Madrid and Juventus along the way and playing thrilling football before a stunning late meltdown at home against Tottenham cost them a place in the final.
Following spells with Juventus and Bayern Munich since, De Ligt’s start to his United career since being signed this summer has been somewhat checkered. He scored away to Southampton, ghosting into the box as he had done in his first game as Ajax captain, but had such a chaotic performance in the 3-3 at Porto in the Europa League that Ten Hag felt compelled to take him out of the starting line-up for the subsequent trip to Aston Villa.
De Ligt’s injury yesterday was the result of once again engaging early with a situation and being a split-second late.
But his determination to stay on echoes what Ten Hag saw in Arnhem over six years ago and De Ligt did his bit after the break. Late in the game, his aggressive approach won United the ball on the wing and he carried possession down the same touchline where he had earlier shown such fury, eventually crossing so Alejandro Garnacho could test Mark Flekken with a shot.
By that stage, Garnacho’s volley from Marcus Rashford’s brilliant cross and Rasmus Hojlund’s deft finish from a Bruno Fernandes flicked assist had swung the points United’s way. They had come out flying for the second half, proof that these players are still trying for their manager — even those who have experienced friction at times. Rashford was energised in and out of possession and could have had at least three more assists. Casemiro also had a very good game.
Ten Hag’s selection choices paid off, too. Casemiro and Christian Eriksen were starting their first Premier League game alongside Fernandes since September last year — the 3-1 home loss to Brighton — but here, the partnership worked. Lisandro Martinez was near faultless as the makeshift left-back.
Match-going United fans have largely stayed with Ten Hag and his team as well. Hundreds remained afterwards outside Old Trafford for photos. De Ligt, once his wound was fully cleaned up, was one of those who obliged them.
The big caveat is that Ten Hag needs consistent performances like this against the best teams. Only then will his relationship with United truly have hope of ending happily ever after.

The win meant United climbed to 10th in the standings on 11 points after eight matches, and eased some of the pressure on manager Erik ten Hag, whose job has been the subject of media speculation. Brentford are 12th on 10 points.
United had 10 men on the pitch when Ethan Pinnock headed in Brentford’s goal from a corner deep in first-half stoppage time after referee Sam Barrott instructed Matthijs de Ligt to go to the touchline to stem the bleeding from a gash on his head.
United came out of the break fired up and Garnacho latched onto a cross from Marcus Rashford to fire home from the left side of the six-yard box into the far corner in the 47th minute.
Hojlund put the home side ahead in spectacular fashion in the 62nd when Bruno Fernandes found him with a back-heel pass, and the Dane chipped the ball over goalkeeper Mark Flekken.

Perhaps it took a sense of injustice to spare Manchester United further ignominy. When the half-time whistle blew, they were losing and losing their rag, Brentford on course for a first win at Old Trafford since 1937, United set for a third consecutive league defeat at Old Trafford, a fate they had not suffered since 1979. As it stood, they were the joint lowest scorers in the Premier League, their drought stretching past five hours. The class of 2024 were failing, the class of 2004 fuming. Ethan Pinnock’s opener – though actually far less controversial than United imagined – had annoyed their past. Their present responded. The temptation was to call it a much-needed win for Erik ten Hag, though perhaps the scarcity of victories means they all are, but ended with a first triumph in six games, just a fourth in 12 outings this season. Kobbie Mainoo – The midfielder was substituted during the 3-0 defeat by Tottenham but trained with the squad this week and appears to be fully fit.
Mason Mount – Mount came on against Spurs only to be taken off again with a head injury. He sat out of training this week but it is thought to be a precautionary measure after he suffered a minor cut, rather than any concussion. He is a doubt for Porto but is likely to be available for the weekend’s trip to Aston Villa.
Harry Maguire – Maguire missed the Tottenham game with an unspecified knock in training, but he was back in training this week and is expected to be available.
Victor Lindelof – Lindelof is back in training and the Swedish defender could make his first appearance of the season in the coming weeks.
Luke Shaw – The full-back’s injury troubles have continued this season but he could be back later this month after progress from his calf strain.
Leny Yoro – The big-money signing is not expected to be fit until November after fracturing a foot bone. “Yes, he is doing very well,” Ten Hag said last week. “It is very pleasing that his rehab is going in the right direction and I expect him soon, but what I mean by soon, is that he is now in the right planning process.
