WWE Bad Blood 2024 from the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Ga. advertised five matches. This included two title matches as Nia Jax defended the WWE Women’s Championship against Bayley while Rhea Ripley looked to regain the WWE Women’s World Championship against Liv Morgan with Dominik Mysterio suspended in a shark cage.
Bad Blood also advertised a heavily anticipated showdown between Drew McIntyre and CM Punk inside Hell in a Cell. The main event featured Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes teaming together for the first time ever to take on the Bloodline. If Reigns and Rhodes weren’t enough when it comes to star power, The Rock returned at the end of the night.
Last week’s broadcast of WWE Raw garnered 1.516 million viewers.

CM Punk Def. Drew McIntyre
The Big 3 (Jade Cargill, Bianca Belair and Naomi) kicked off the show as the hosts, and then WWE immediately lowered the cage as they talked up the rare amount of hate Drew McIntyre and CM Punk have for one another.
Drew McIntyre and CM Punk called back to Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin with a bloody sharpshooter. They then seemed to be doing a callback to Hell in a Cell 1998 with thumbtacks, but instead, they were plastic beads for a friendship bracelet.
The main ingredients for this match were a wrench, a steel step, a table and friendship beads. It all combined to tell a fantastic story that called back to ‘90s WWE while keeping continuity with CM Punk and Drew McIntyre’s literal blood feud.
For more details on CM Punk vs. Drew McIntyre, see this article.

Nia Jax Def. Bayley
Nia Jax wore Bloodline red for her latest title defense, which may or may not be a coincidence.
Poor Bayley and Nia Jax were tasked with having to follow a brutal Hell in a Cell match. They actually did a good job getting the crowd into it, especially when Bayley teased a power bomb on Nia Jax. Nia countered with an extremely awkward hurricanrana and it temporarily killed the crowd.
Fans chanted “Tiffy Time!” and “we want Tiffy” as the match soldiered on. Bayley played to the crowd by pointing to her wrist.
Jax has been better than ever during this current run, but botched multiple spots, including pop-up Samoan Drop on Bayley. Bayley came back with a Samoan Drop of her own.
While Jax was stirring, she landed on referee Jessika Carr. This led to inevitable speculation of Tiffany Stratton hitting the ring. As Bayley caught Nia in a visual three-count, Stratton hit the ring and bludgeoned Bayley with the briefcase. Stratton woke Jessika Carr up, but Nia Jax sat up like The Undertaker.
After a teased cash-in from Stratton, Jax defeated Bayley with a super Samoan Drop and an Annihilator.

Damian Preist Def. Finn Balor
WWE legends and stars in attendance include Quavo, Lil Baby, Goldberg, X-Pac, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Diamond Dallas Page, Killer Mike, Booker T and Metro Boomin.
Fans seemed to be fatigued for this match, which had the least stakes of any on the card. Balor’s strategy was to chop down the big tree, and fans rallied behind Priest as he fired up. Priest has great fire, and is on his way to becoming an elite babyface.
As Priest closed in on a win, Carlito hit the ring and distracted the referee. JD McDonagh attacked Priest on the outside, leading to a Coup de Grace but Priest kicked out.
Priest took on the whole Judgment Day, but when he went for a South of Heaven, Balor turned it into a rollup for another nearfall. Back came Balor with two more Coup de Graces to the back. Priest hit the South of Heaven for the win.
Damian Priest vs. Finn Balor Grade: B
Triple H Announces WWE Crown Jewel Championship
Triple H announced 16,092 fans, WWE’s 60th sellout of 2024. He also announced the largest-grossing arena event in State Farm Arena history.
Triple H appeared alongside a championship belt as he announced that in just four weeks, the WWE world champion and the WWE champion will face off. Neither title will be on the line, but there will be a definitive winner, and the winner will be crowned the Crown Jewel champion.
GUNTHER interrupt Triple H and called out Goldberg. After saying Goldberg was his favorite wrestler just last month, he turned on his former idol by calling him a “one trick pony.”
Before Goldberg and GUNTHER could do battle—after GUNTHER insulted Goldberg as a father—Sami Zayn hit the ring and attacked GUNTHER. For more on the WWE Crown Jewel Championship, click here.
Rhea Ripley Def. Liv Morgan By DQ
Dominik Mysterio and Liv Morgan arrived in Dom’s famed low rider, but Dom was promptly thrown in the cage. The cage was raised over the ring, but not in the middle of the ring.
After Rhea Ripley dominated the early goings of this match, Liv Morgan attacked Rhea’s leg.
Liv Morgan debuted a unique new move—the Homewrecker—on Rhea Ripley for a nearfall. A great name for a move, but she should have debuted it as an alternate finisher. The Homewrecker is a modified Made in Japan.
Dominik Mysterio was able to open the shark cage door bet was still suspended in midair.
Raquel Rodriguez returned to force a disqualification. There was an awkward moment where Rodriguez tried to drape Morgan over Ripley for the pin, but the referee had already called for the DQ.
Rhea Ripley vs. Liv Morgan Grade: B-
Rhodes And Reigns Def. The Bloodline
Cody Rhodes was played out by an HBCU Marching Band (University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff), while Roman Reigns was played out by a full orchestra (the Georgia Philharmonic). Meanwhile, in AEW, their main event stable is inspired by the skinhead movie Romper Stomper. Pro wrestling has something for everybody.
Jacob Fatu was kept as strong as anybody, and wasn’t taken out until he was put through a table by a Cody Rhodes splash. This protected him from taking a pin.
Jimmy Uso returned, helping Roman Reigns win as he pinned Solo Sikoa. After the match, The Rock made his long-awaited (and rumored) return. This sets up what should be another great WarGames match at Survivor Series.
CLEVELAND (AP) — Lane Thomas hit a three-run homer in a five-run outburst before Detroit got an out, and the Cleveland Guardians unleashed their lights-out bullpen to complete a four-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Tigers in an AL Division Series opener on Saturday.
Thomas’ shot — on his first career postseason swing — helped the Guardians cool off the Tigers, who stormed into the playoffs with a second-half surge before sweeping AL West champion Houston in the wild-card round.
“It was electric,” said Thomas, acquired from Washington at the trade deadline. “It was everything I had thought and more.”
Tanner Bibee pitched 4 2/3 innings before Guardians manager Stephen Vogt swung the door open to baseball’s best bullpen to finish off the Tigers.
Cleveland’s relievers combined for 4 1/3 hitless innings to finish and match the largest shutout victory margin in club postseason history. Detroit struck out 13 times and didn’t get a runner past first in the final four innings.
The shutout was the worst in Detroit playoff history since Game 1 of the 1945 World Series.
“We’re going to see a lot of this bullpen,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “The more you look at them, hopefully, the more comfortable you get.”
Cleveland’s bullpen was as advertised. Rookie Cade Smith (1-0) replaced Bibee and struck out all four batters. Tim Herrin took care of the seventh, Hunter Gaddis the eighth, and Emmanuel Clase, who led the AL with 47 saves, worked the ninth.
David Fry added a two-run double for the AL Central champion Guardians, who were unaffected by not playing for almost a week with a first-round bye.
“We came out ready to swing the bat, and we looked like we didn’t take five days off,” Vogt said.
Game 2 is Monday, when the Tigers will turn to Tarik Skubal, the favorite to win the AL Cy Young Award, to try and even the best-of-five series.
The 2,327th meeting between Detroit and Cleveland was the first between the franchises and Central division rivals in the postseason.
It was as good as over after one inning.
Hinch has made the right decisions for months as his young club went from being under .500 at the trade deadline to qualifying for the postseason with a 33-13 flourish since Aug. 11.
Hinch used his bullpen in Game 1 from the start and it backfired.
The Guardians sent nine batters to the plate in the first with Thomas’ moon shot into the left-field bleachers opening the 5-0 lead. Cleveland became the first team in AL postseason history to score five runs before recording an out.
Steven Kwan got it rolling with a leadoff double against Tigers starter Tyler Holton (0-1) and Fry walked. José Ramírez followed with a hard hopper to third that Zach McKinstry misplayed for an error, allowing Kwan to score.
“I tried to make a play and I didn’t. We ended up losing the game because of it,” said McKinstry, who put some of the blame on the grounds crew. “They watered the field before the game, but they didn’t water it for the game and it took a weird hop.”
Josh Naylor’s RBI single made it 2-0 and Hinch pulled Holton after just four batters to bring in Reese Olson.
Thomas, who batted just .143 with 33 strikeouts in 77 at-bats after coming over from the Nationals, made his first postseason at-bat with the Guardians unforgettable.
He turned on Olson’s first pitch — a slider down the heart of the plate — and launched it over the wall, sending the majority of 33,548 fans inside Progressive Field into a frenzy.
Bibee admitted feeling nerves ahead of the opener, and he showed some in the first, throwing 27 pitches.
But taking the mound in the second with a five-run lead helped Bibee settle in. The right-hander gave up four hits and struck out six before handing the ball to Vogt and a bullpen with no detectable flaws.
“I totally get it,” Bibee said. “With how good our pen has been, I get it. It makes sense. Obviously, I want to stay out there as long as possible, but I get it.”
TRAINER’S ROOM
Guardians: RHP Alex Cobb, a candidate to start Game 3, was added to the ALDS roster after finishing the regular season on the injured list with a blister on his middle finger. He made just three starts after being acquired in a July trade from San Francisco.
UP NEXT
Skubal led the AL in wins (18), ERA (2.39) and strikeouts (228). The left-hander is expected to face Guardians RHP Matthew Boyd, who spent eight seasons with the Tigers and remains close friends with Skubal.
BOSTON — The defending champion Boston Celtics picked up where they left off, tipping off their preseason with a 107-103 win over the Denver Nuggets in Abu Dhabi on Friday. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown both played extended minutes in the first half, while Payton Prichard put on a show from deep in the second half.
Pritchard led all Celtics scorers with 21 points to go with six assists. Tatum scored a dozen points while Brown put in eight, as both Boston stars saw 19 minutes of action.
Nikola Jokic was his usual self for the Nuggets and finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Neither team’s starters played after halftime, but Boston’s reserves were able to erase a double-digit deficit in the second half and trialed by just one heading into the final frame.
It was members of the Maine Celtics that led Boston to a victory in a back-and-forth fourth quarter. Drew Peterson hit back-to-back threes to put the Celtics on top 101-94 with 2:12 to play. JD Davidson had a stretch where he blocked a shot on defense and found Dmytro Skapintsev with a nice lob on the other end. He made four free throws over the final 7.2 seconds to ice the Boston victory.
The two teams will play again at Etihad Arena on Sunday, though it’s unclear if any starters will play in that game. Here are a few takeaways from Boston’s exhibition opener on Friday.
Jayson Tatum’s shot looked better
Tatum’s slump from the perimeter during the playoffs and the Olympics was a hot topic over the summer. His deep shot looked much better on Friday.
While Tatum seemed more interested in setting up his teammates than taking his own shots, logging five assists during his time on the floor, he ended up hitting three of his seven attempts from downtown. The shot looked pretty smooth and a bit quicker than what saw from Tatum last summer.
Jaylen Brown made a poster in Abu Dhabi
Brown was 3-for-9 from the floor and just 1-for-5 from deep. But he had the loudest bucket of the game, adding poster from Abu Dhabi to his ever-growing collection.
Payton Pritchard was a walking bucket
Pritchard was 6-for-12 from downtown, attempting just one shot from inside the arc. While he didn’t hit any ridiculously deep threes, he did add one from pretty deep. (Though it was fairly pedestrian for Pritchard’s standards.)
Pritchard also pushed the pace for Boston in the second half and played a team-high 24 minutes. The fifth-year guard is primed for a huge season off the Boston bench.
The Celtics took a lot of threes
In the long history of the franchise, the Celtics have never attempted 60 three-pointers in a regular season or playoff game. They took 61 shots from downtown on Friday. Mazzullaball was at a whole new level in Abu Dhabi.
Last season, the Celtics averaged an NBA-high 42.5 threes per game. We could see that number climb during the 2024-25 season.
Luke Kornet started for Al Horford
Al Horford got the day off, with Luke Kornet taking his spot in the starting lineup alongside Tatum, Brown, Derrick White, and Jrue Holiday. He put in a solid 21 minutes of work, grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds to go with six points. Kornet is expected to start while Kristaps Porzingis continues his recovery from offseason surgery.
Xavier Tillman was also pretty good in his role off the bench, canning a couple of threes while pulling down two rebounds, blocking a shot, and coming up with a pair of steals.
Jordan Walsh is a ball of energy
Walsh was everywhere in his 25 minutes on the floor, and had a loud putback jam in the second half. He finished with nine points off 3-for-7 shooting, with six of those shots coming from downtown. (He hit two from deep.) Walsh also had four rebounds and four assists.

Liverpool made it two wins from two in the Champions League on Wednesday night as they defeated Bologna, 2-0, at Anfield.
The hosts got off to a strong start when Mohamed Salah‘s precise cross found Alexis Mac Allister, who enjoyed a simple finish to put the Reds 1-0 up.
Dominik Szoboszlai had Liverpool’s next best chance of the first half with an effort that he put wide, while Bologna were dangerous on a couple of occasions, hitting the woodwork twice before Alisson was required to deny Kacper Urbanski.
The Serie A side started brighter in the second half as they enjoyed some promising phases of possession that led to shots on goal, but when the Reds regained control, Salah doubled their advantage with a fine curling effort into the far corner.
Positives
Back-to-back wins means Liverpool are in prime position to secure a top eight place in the Champions League phase. A bright display from Salah was also capped with a well-taken goal. The Reds’ midfield also impressed with their defensive work.
Negatives
Liverpool lost control of the game in spells which could have seen them punished on another night. Final ball could have also been better at times, with a number of counter-attacking opportunities wasted.
Manager rating (1-10; 10 = best)
Arne Slot, 7 — Responded well in the second half when Bologna started strong and timed his substitutions to help add more creativity into his side. Liverpool’s game plan also saw them get into some promising positions despite not taking advantage of them as much as they should have.
Player ratings
GK Alisson Becker, 7 — Alisson’s save against Orlansky ensured that Liverpool went into the break with their lead in check. Denied Orsolini in the second half with a fairly straightforward stop.
DF Virgil van Dijk, 6 — Passed out from the back well and caught Bologna out with an impressive switch to Salah, though he was booked harshly for a challenge that looked to be accidental.
DF Ibrahima Konaté, 6 — Strong in the challenge and positioned well to clear the danger regularly, but booked needlessly for pushing his marker on an attacking corner.
DF Andrew Robertson, 6 — The Scotland international had little to do with Bologna favouring the opposite flank for the majority of their attacks. Worked hard to support his side in both phases, and was eventually replaced by Kostas Tsimikas in the 72nd minute.
DF Trent Alexander-Arnold, 6 — Alexander-Arnold had some positive moments when anticipating play before playing passes into dangerous areas, but he did require the help of Alisson after being dispossessed by Dan Ndoye in the first half.
MF Dominik Szoboszlai, 7 — Should have done more to get his effort on target in the first half after striking wide of the goal. Worked hard in midfield when tracking back, showing good strength to win the ball back on multiple Bologna counter-attacks. Used his pace to begin positive plays when driving with the ball through central areas, registering the assist for Salah’s goal.
MF Alexis Mac Allister, 7 — A well-timed run saw Alexis Mac Allister get on the end of Salah’s cross to put Liverpool 1-0 up. Made a number of interceptions and battled well in the spells in which the Reds were under pressure.
MF Ryan Gravenberch, 7 — Another strong performance from Gravenberch saw him choose the right moments to carry the ball through the midfield lines, and he was calm under pressure to evade Bologna’s press before progressing the ball forwards.
FW Darwin Núñez, 6 — Held the ball up well while leading the line and was composed for Liverpool’s opener, picking out Salah in space in the build up. Had the ball in the net again but mistimed his run and was called offside.
FW Luis Díaz, 6 — A quieter game from Luis Diaz than usual following some recent impressive form, in a game during which he wasn’t given many opportunities to trouble his marker. Should have done better to get a shot off when cutting inside but lost control of the ball.
FW Mohamed Salah, 8 — A regular threat down the right flank and registered an assist in the 10th minute with an excellent in-swinging ball that allowed Mac Allister to score from close-range. Not too far away with a curling effort from inside the box just after the hour mark, and then scored from a similar position with an excellent effort into the far corner.
Substitutes (players introduced after 70 minutes = no rating)
Diogo Jota (Nunez, 61″), 6 — Found space dribbling towards the box in the 74th minute but was quickly crowded out.
Kostas Tsimikas (Robertson, 72″), N/R — Linked well when going forward down the left-flank where Liverpool were able to generate a number of chances from. Booked for a challenge in which he won the ball but it was deemed dangerous by the referee
Cody Gakpo (Diaz, 72″), N/R — Stretched the play with direct runs in behind the defence, almost combining with Salah to get a scoring chance but was slightly offside.
Curtis Jones (Szoboszlai, 86″), N/R — Worked hard during the time he was on when pressing Bologna’s midfield as they tried to get a late goal back.
Conor Bradley (Alexander-Arnold, 85″), N/R — On for Alexander-Arnold with Liverpool looking to see out the final minutes.
Boasting arguably the most talented roster in MLS history, Inter Miami are led by Messi (17g/15a) and Luis Suárez (18g/6a). The iconic forwards are in the Landon Donovan MLS MVP hunt, providing leadership and world-class ability alongside fellow ex-FC Barcelona stars Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets.
Inter Miami are far more than veteran stars, though, with Martino juggling injuries, international call-ups and multiple competitions to maximize the roster assembled by chief soccer officer and sporting director Chris Henderson.
Veszprem HC returned to the final of the IHF Men’s Club World Championship for the first time in nine years, after a dramatic win in the semi-final against FC Barcelona, 39:34, after extra-time, which needed a strong comeback for the Hungarian side, which had dominated the first 45 minutes of the match.
Barcelona will now head to the bronze medal match, for the second season in a row, as their drought in the world club handball flagship competition is now extended to five years, the last title for the most decorated side coming in 2019.
SEMI-FINALS FC Barcelona (ESP) vs Veszprem HC (HUN) 34:39 a.e.t. (13:15; 29:29)
There were plenty of storylines colliding in the first semi-final of the 2024 IHF Men’s Club World Championship, where Veszprem, trying to secure their maiden finals berth since 2015, faced FC Barcelona.
First and utmost, it was the battle between Xavi Pascual, currently Veszprem’s coach, and his former side, Barcelona, where he coached between 2009 and 2021, securing the title at the IHF Men’s Club World Championship five times, still a record for the competition.
Two other former Barcelona players, centre back Luka Cindric and line player Ludovic Fabregas, where also there, on the court, for Veszprem, with the two sides knowing each other fully well, having played six times in the last three years, with Barcelona taking four wins in those matches.
But here, Veszprem had bigger ambitions, highlighted by bringing Pascual this summer, and they started the match better, brandishing their fast-paced style of handball, in what was expected to be a high-scoring match. Yet with Barcelona needing to change the goalkeeper, after Gonzalo Perez de Vargas saved only one of the first 11 shots he faced, Veszprem looked better.
Sure, Barcelona – undefeated this season – were quick to correct their mistakes, despite making six turnovers in the first half. But where Veszprem really shined was the goalkeeping department, with Rodrigo Corrales having a 43% saving efficiency, while Barcelona had only 25%.
Throughout the first half, where they had two 3:0 unanswered runs, Veszprem controlled the pace and the match, forcing their opponents to score with only 50% of their shots, as the Spanish powerhouse, the reigning Machineseeker EHF Champions League winners, failed to really get their attacking properly going, limited to only 13 goals.
But as Dika Mem scored four goals and dished two assists, Barcelona were not done and dusted yet, despite going down by three goals, 13:16, early in the second half, when Ludovic Fabregas scored Veszprem’s first goal of the second half.
Yet there was no separating the two teams, with Veszprem constantly leading, but Barcelona, thanks to their experience, coming closer and closer, with Mem improving his overall tally to nine goals, as the Spanish side was only one goal down, 23:24, with 13 minutes to go.
As Veszprem reverted to their original line-up, with Luka Cindric, Nedim Remili and Yehia Elderaa in the back line, Barcelona forced Pascual to take a team time-out, after the Spanish powerhouse tied the score, 25:25, with Mem and Aleix Gomez, the right flank of the Spanish side, constantly punishing Veszprem.
Another quick team time-out, the last of the match for Veszprem, did nothing to help the Hungarian side, as Barcelona’s comeback was on the cards, after the Spanish side used a 6:2 run, fueled by Gomez and Mem, but also with some saves from Nielsen, to take the reigning Champions League winners to a 29:27 lead, with three minutes to go.
Yet the match was far from over. With goals from Hugo Descat and Yehia Elderaa, who were Veszprem’s best scorers in the regular time, combining for 15 goals, the Hungarian side tied the score, 29:29, with Barcelona having 39 seconds to make or break this match. But when Aleix Gomez missed a penalty with 13 seconds left, Veszprem had the chance to win, only for the last gasp shot of Sergei Kosorotov to hit the post, pushing the match into extra-time.
And there, in the business end, it was only Veszprem. First, the Hungarian side used a 4:1 run in the first five minutes to create a 33:30 lead, tying the biggest lead of the match, putting Barcelona under huge pressure, as the Spanish side’s attack failed to really get the needed goals.
There was no question about the winner as the time passed, as Veszprem throttled the Spanish side, with Elderaa, Descat and Nedim Remili, who were the team’s best scorers and combined for 24 goals, with Remili having four of Veszprem’s 10 goals in the extra-time.
Veszprem will play for the title on Thursday, with the winner of the second semi-final, between Al-Ahly and SC Magdeburg, with Xavi Pascual’s side aiming to become the first Hungarian team to seal the trophy, after conceding the final of the 2015 edition, 27:28, against Fuchse Berlin.
On the other side, Barcelona have missed the final of the competition for the second time in a row, and will have to wait at least one more year for their sixth trophy in the IHF Men’s Club World Championship, after conceding yet another tough loss.

Manchester United were hammered and humbled by Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, beaten 3-0 as captain Bruno Fernandes was shown a straight red card.
The match got off in the worst possible way for the hosts as Micky van de Ven embarked on a brilliant run to tee up Brennan Johnson for a tap-in, but United failed to respond as they were dominated on their own patch throughout. Andre Onana prevented the scoreline from being any worse, but Fernandes’ knee-high challenge on James Maddison saw him sent-off right before half-time.
Straight after the restart Dejan Kulusevski volleyed in a second, while Dominic Solank poked in a third for Spurs later on – but the damage had long since been done as United were woeful and booed off the pitch by a section of their fans at full time. Another dreadful Man United defeat shows ambition is built on little more than delusion
19:12 , Karl Matchett
For Erik ten Hag, a list of dreadful days as Manchester United manager was already rather too long. Quite where this ranks is a moot point, but it was wretched, both shocking and yet familiar. Outclassed by Tottenham Hotspur even before they were outnumbered by them, United again looked an expensive, incoherent mess.
While Ten Hag was serenaded by the Spurs fans with chants of “sacked in the morning”, one of United’s leaders actually did get his marching orders. Bruno Fernandes’ red card was a symptom of United’s problems; passive for too long, they were petulant at times, their attempts to halt Tottenham verging on the desperate, their plans falling apart.
On Thursday, Ten Hag claimed that United had turned a corner. Instead, this season feels a continuation of the last, a campaign that could be littered with ignominies. An eighth defeat in 20 league games at Old Trafford underlines how far they have fallen. United’s new hierarchy can talk of winning the title by 2028 but they are already six points off fifth, in the bottom half and with a negative goal difference.
The table may not lie. Just as Liverpool did last month, Spurs exposed the gulf with rivals. Tottenham have similar immediate aims, of Champions League qualification this season: but whereas United’s looked built on delusion, there seems a realism to theirs.

Gary Neville lays into ‘absolutely disgusting’ Manchester United performance against Tottenham
20:00 , Karl Matchett
Gary Neville slammed an “absolutely disgusting” performance from Manchester United as Tottenham won 3-0 at Old Trafford to increase the pressure on manager Erik ten Hag.
The dismal hosts fell to their third defeat of the Premier League campaign after just six games as captain Bruno Fernandes was sent off for “serious foul play” late in the first half.
Tottenham, who led thanks to Brennan Johnson’s early goal, added two more after the break with Old Trafford emptying rapidly after Dominic Solanke’s third sealed all three points.
It meant there were barely any fans left to boo the team as United fell to successive 3-0 defeats at home in the Premier League, following Liverpool’s comfortable win at the start of the month.

Erik ten Hag told he has ‘no excuses’ as Man United boss claims red card had ‘big impact’ on defeat to Spurs
19:29 , Karl Matchett
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag acknowledged his players were well below the necessary level of performance in their 3-0 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday, but insisted the red card to Bruno Fernandes just before half-time had a “big impact” on the outcome.
Spurs started quickly and were ahead inside two minutes, Brennan Johnson tapping in from close range. And they hardly let up their assault on United’s box for the remainder of the first half, with the hosts managing just three shots and 37 per cent possession in the first 45 minutes, compared to Tottenham’s 12 efforts and 63 per cent.
Despite that, Ten Hag felt his side were close to coming back on terms after Alejandro Garnacho hit the outside of the post and Joshua Zirkzee saw an effort on the stretch comfortably saved, with Fernandes’ dismissal for a knee-high challenge on James Maddison the turning point which prevented his side finding a route back into the game.

Spurs players talking at fulltime now.
Brennan Johnson first after scoring the opener: “We completely dominated the game, did things exactly as we wanted. We had a clear game plan and did a great job.
“Micky’s one of the quickest once he gets going. The manager demands we be at the back post, the goal like that it’s easy but it’s about getting there first.”
And Micky van de Ven, who assisted his goal in such style:
“We controlled the game, we knew they are quite dangerous on counter-attacks but we controlled it.
“I intercepted the ball and saw the gap. I was like ‘now I’m going!’ and I knew he’s at the second post. I didn’t see the goal because I was falling down the stairs but I knew he put it in!
“We showed we have the quality to play at this intensity all game so it’s a deserved three points.”

The whistle goes, Man United fans boo, Spurs fans cheer and Gary Neville calls the first-half performance from his former side “disgusting”.
Quite the result for Spurs, a really good performance – awful from start to finish for United, who had Bruno Fernandes sent-off.

Final seconds, although Old Trafford is already half-empty anyway. This is back-to-back 3-0 home league defeats for Ten Hag – their last game here in this competition was the loss to Liverpool. Both games could have been far higher-scoring in truth, for the visitors.
Mikey Moore dips inside and almost does increase the scoreline, curling just wide of Onana’s far post.

De Ligt sweeps one wide as United give it one more go to find a goal at least – which would stop them dropping to 12th.
Doesn’t look as though they’ll get it. “Absolutley woeful, as bad as it gets” bemoans Gary Neville on Sky Sports.

Time now running down, not fast enough for the home fans and players though. Another chastening outing for Erik ten Hag. United’s wins this season have come over Fulham, newly promoted Southampton and lower-league Barnsley – nobody else.
Onana – United’s best player by a mile today – stops Solanke adding a fourth, with Sarr heading wide on the rebound.

Amad Diallo comes on for Mount, who plays less than a half after coming on as sub himself.
United’s upcoming games are away to Porto and Villa, home to Brentford then away to Fenerbahce and West Ham. Not a routine run, as their four-match unbeaten stretch comes to an end here.
They’ll also drop down a place in the table on goal difference if it stays 3-0.

That’s that! United’s best period ends in them conceding a third – a corner from the left is flicked on by Sarr and Solanke stretches to get a toe on the ball and prod over the line.

Porro picks up a yellow card now for fouling Garnacho, who continues to look lively. Double sub for United, Eriksen and Hojlund on for Ugarte and Rashford. Richard Jolly’s assessment from Old Trafford:
“Perhaps United have played better with 10 men, though that is an indictment of their efforts with 11. Casemiro has at least looked a threat in the final third. Manuel Ugarte has gone off, perhaps to spare him a red card. It is an understatement to say he has not been good today, even if the circumstances of United’s performance are a mitigating factor.”
72’ – Man United 0-2 Spurs
18:04 , Karl Matchett
Postecoglou could be thinking about changes here too, given his side have totally lost control – they have no possession, just counter-attacking from time to time.
Werner leads one down the left about 50 yards, beating a defender in the process – but then his cut-back is between three players and he throws his arms up in despair.
Garnacho goes down the other end, tricks his way inside and shoots – deflected wide.
68’ – Man United 0-2 Spurs
18:01 , Karl Matchett
Closest United have come. A lofted ball over the top finds Casemiro running in of all people and he angles a half-volley on the bounce just past the far post.
Rasmus Hojlund is ready to come on for United as they seek a way back into the game.

Mount sends over a free-kick but Vicario claims well. A few more deliveries into the area and the home fans are buoyed once more, urging their team to continue the fight to find a way back into the game.
Spurs have just lost control of the game over the last ten minutes, but they will surely have chances to counter-attack if United push on.
Kulusevski beats Ugarte down the wing and is bundled over – another yellow, for the United midfielder this time.
60’ – Man United 0-2 Spurs
17:53 , Karl Matchett
United have just won their first corner of the game – Martinez won a header and appealed for a handball, but nothing doing. Then there’s another penalty shout – from more players this time – soon after, being Martinez again steers a shot past the post.
Romero did touch the ball with his arm but it wasn’t out or up, so no spot kick.
This is United’s best period of pressure, by which we mean they’ve had a few crosses and one half-hearted shot just wide. Ten Hag on the sidelines wafts his hands around and continues to chew his gum.
56’ – Man United 0-2 Spurs
17:48 , Karl Matchett
Could, or should, be 3-0 – Onana to the rescue with a double save.
Kulusevski takes on two to burst through midfield and feed a brilliant ball to Werner; he shapes up the low shot which Onana gets down for, then the keeper lurches back up to deny the onrushing Johnson from the rebound, too.

Yellow card for Spence for handball; yellow card for Martinez for a lunging slide which took out Maddison.
Richard Jolly at Old Trafford, where the Spurs fans are singing “sacked in the morning” to Erik ten Hag:
“From bad to worse to even worse to…. Manchester United’s afternoon is deteriorating still further, the terrific Johnson setting up Kulusevski to volley in. 1-0 flattered United at half-time. 2-0 could lead to rather more.”
48’ – Man United 0-2 Spurs
17:41 , Karl Matchett
A horror show from United defensively.
Martinez misses a challenge on the halfway line, Dalot lunges in and can’t cut the ball out, De Ligt doesn’t cut out hte cross and nobody at all has run with Kulusevski, as he flicks in the second past the keeper.

Djed Spence is on for Udogie at the break for Spurs, Casemiro is on for Zirkzee for United.

Richard Jolly at Old Trafford:
“Deserved red card for Bruno Fernandes – that was a dangerous lunge at James Maddison – and an increasingly disastrous day for Manchester United, with Kobbie Mainoo hobbling off.”
‘Unstoppable’ Micky van de Ven produces stunning assist with 70-yard sprint
Van de Ven pounced on a loose ball in the Spurs half after Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford lost possession, before the Dutch international surged forward from inside the halfway line.
Van de Ven eased away from Manuel Ugarte and past compatriot Matthijs de Ligt to reach the byline before squaring a perfect low cross to the back post, where a grinning Johnson was on hand to tap into the empty net.

Van de Ven beats Garnacho in a foot race down the wing and slide-tackles the ball out of play – that just about sums up the difference between the teams.
The half-time whistle goes and boos ring out, be they for Erik ten Hag, his team or the referee. Could be all three from this home crowd.
Spurs lead, one-nil.
45+3’ – Man United 0-1 Spurs

United must be amazed they are only a goal behind. Mount goes straight through Bentancur for no reason and is booked.
They have been so, so far off it in this first half, but Spurs have missed two or three really decent openings to add to Johnson’s early strike.
44’ – Man United 0-1 Spurs
17:16 , Karl Matchett
A dreadful afternoon gets worse for United who immediately make a change. Mainoo is replaced by Mason Mount – although bizarrely Mount doesn’t come on straight away and the home team play on for a few moments with nine.
They are down to ten though and not looking in good shape today at all.
Five minutes added on.
RED CARD! 42’ – Man United 0-1 Spurs
17:14 , Karl Matchett
Bruno Fernandes given a straight red card!
The United midfielder slipped as he changed direction, then lunged into a knee-high tackle on James Maddison who was skipping away from him.
No doubt about the decision, he’s far too high and not going for the ball at all.
United down to ten men.
42’ – Man United 0-1 Spurs
17:13 , Karl Matchett
Dalot is carded to make it both United full-backs into the book, dragging down Kulusevski.
The Swede sees a shot blocked by Mainoo just after, as Spurs continue their assault on Onana’s goal – but no second reward for them yet, which will give Ten Hag hope that he can demand a reaction from his team at the break.
This game is like a basketball match at times, both sides looking for passes through gaps from deep to flood forward, but only Spurs are doing it with any productive manner.
40’ – Man United 0-1 Spurs
17:10 , Karl Matchett
The first real moment for United – Garnacho batters a volley against the outside of the post.
Rashford’s deep cross finds his fellow winger and he sets himself, then powers a drive which Vicario might have covered, but strikes the woodwork anyway. A warning for Spurs, after their domination of this first half.
Then it’s up the other end and it really should be 2-0 as Timo Werner speeds away from the defence – but one-on-one with Onana, he shoots straight at the keeper who saves.
36’ – Man United 0-1 Spurs
17:07 , Karl Matchett
De Ligt has continually given possession away when trying to play out, but he now blocks Udogie as he again bursts through and tries to shoot – it’s over for a corner. Spurs continue pressing for this second goal – and Romero very nearly gets it in spectacular fashion.
A first corner is half-cleared, Porro crosses back in and Romero produces a side-on bicycle kick which flies only a yard wide of the post.
Mazraoui is then booked for a late slide in on Udogie as United continue to fail to get to grips with the pace of their opponents.
32’ – Man United 0-1 Spurs
17:03 , Karl Matchett
Richard Jolly at Old Trafford:
“A rather chastening half-hour for Manchester United who, one Joshua Zirkzee shot apart, have not threatened enough, while looking troubled by Tottenham’s pace and creativity. Perhaps Erik ten Hag’s gameplan is to counter-attack, but Spurs have done that better as well as looking the superior side in possession.”
30′ – Man United 0-1 Spurs
17:01 , Karl Matchett
Kulusevski and Johnson link once more around the right edge of the box, where United are just totally unable to shut down the spaces and stop Spurs continually running past them. Maddison’s eventual cross is beyond Werner this time but Dalot is pickpocketed, Maddison shoots – Onana saves.
26’ – Man United 0-1 Spurs
16:59 , Karl Matchett
Mazraoui has to lift the ball out from under his own bar as Spurs cut through United once more – Brennan Johnson this time the provider with a low ball, but with Werner lurking it’s the full-back who gets there first and saves his side falling further behind.
Spurs boss Postecoglou must be feeling his side should be at least two up by now – four shots to one, 61% possession, 12 touches in the box to three – all in their favour.
22’ – Man United 0-1 Spurs
16:55 , Karl Matchett
Udogie was down injured and needed some treatment, but looks like he’s ok to continue for now. A first really decent opening for United then, as Mainoo is involved and the ball is worked towards Zirkzee in the middle of the box – he diverts the ball toward goal and it’s on target, but Vicario saves.
18’ – Man United 0-1 Spurs
16:51 , Karl Matchett
Fernandes fizzes a ball wide for Rashford, who has looked bright in getting forward in this first half, but the winger’s low cross is nowhere near Zirkzee or Mainoo. Easy for Vicario and for Spurs to start again – they are well on top so far.
Udogie now sparks another counter-attack, passes to Kulusevski and he tees up Johnson…and his low finish beats Onana, but hits the post. So close to a second.
14’ – Man United 0-1 Spurs
16:45 , Karl Matchett
Udogie and Maddison both break behind United’s back line in quick succession and work chances on goal – the left-back’s effort goes flying over the bar from a narrow angle, but Maddison’s needs a decent block from Onana to prevent a second goal. Lovely exchange between the English midfielder and Kulusevski on the edge of the box to evade Ugarte and the centre-backs.
10’ – Man United 0-1 Spurs
16:41 , Karl Matchett
Onana batters the ball forward and Rashford is streaking away behind the defence after bending his run – the flag does go up but he beats Van de Ven and Romero to the ball and shoots low, only for Vicario to save at the near post.
Wouldn’t have counted, but does show United how they might get themselves chances and a foothold in this game. Spurs’ defence is of course very high upfield.
7’ – Man United 0-1 Spurs
16:40 , Karl Matchett
United needing to settle, but Spurs are just staying on the front foot as you’d expect – looking to win the second ball at every opportunity and flood players forward. Kulusevki is nominally a third midfielder for the visitors but he’s so high upfield challenging, putting the centre-backs under pressure when he can and forcing the hosts back. Zirkzee has barely had a touch so far.
GOAL! 4’ – Man United 0-1 Spurs

Richard Jolly after that opening goal at Old Trafford:
“Four goals in four games since deleting his Instagram account for Brennan Johnson, proving we are all better off without social media. But what a sensational solo run from Micky van de Ven, covering 70 yards at startling speed, to set him up. What a start for Spurs.”
GOAL! 2’ – Man United 0-1 Spurs
16:35 , Karl Matchett
Sensational start!! Van de Ven wins the ball halfway inside his own half and absolutely blazes his way through the entire United team, squaring brilliantly across the six-yard box and Brennan Johnson is totally unmarked to tap in his fourth in four games!
Never mind that clean sheet, it’s gone after 200 seconds!
1’ – Man United 0-0 Spurs

Here we go – kick-off! Three clean sheets in five in the league for United, if they manage a fourth then that will be a big positive for Ten Hag to point to – but it’s wins United really need.
Spurs could say the same, of course.

Richard Jolly is at Old Trafford for us today – we’ll bring you his insight through the match. Ahead of the game he points out a habit Erik ten Hag is developing with his team sheets…
“Last week, Erik ten Hag benched Marcus Rashford after he had started scoring goals. Now Christian Eriksen has chipped in with three in three games and is only a substitute. No Son Heung-min for Tottenham, which means a first league start of the season for Timo Werner.”

Ange Postecoglou ahead of kick-off now:
“Short turnaround from Thursday and Son just wasn’t right for today so we go without him.
“We’ve had to suffer those things a fair bit, key players missing out – you just have to learn to cope without him.
“Timo Werner is most comfortable there, that’s why we brought him to the club so he gets his opportunity today.
“You’re facing a big club here, an iconic stadium, lots of attention – they are the kind of games you want to be involved in.
“We’ve won the last three so we’re going ok. League form is mixed but performances aren’t bad – it’s a challenging start in terms of results but I’m pretty happy with how we play our football.”

Ten Hag adds that Fernandes always ends up as creating the most chances for the team – he’s not worried about a lack of end product from him right now.
“Bruno will work on his form, he’s always working hard, taking responsibility and being captain. The goals and assists will come.”
He’s 11/10 to score or assist today against Spurs, or 8/1 to score the first goal.

It was in the summer of 2023 when Erik ten Hag declared he wanted Manchester United to be “the best transition team in the world”. If he has succeeded, it is probably not quite in the meaning he intended, as the Red Devils enter this weekend following a 1-1 draw with Twente.
His side conceded too many goals on the counter-attack last season, forever looking susceptible to the break. But United are specialists in transition in a different respect. In the third season of Ten Hag’s reign, after 122 games and an outlay of £600m, they remain in transition.
They can seem forever mired there. It may be unfair to judge the Dutchman’s newest team after five league games, before the biggest summer signing Leny Yoro has even made his debut, but they are six points off the lead in the Premier League already. A marquee match against Tottenham is also a mid-table clash, with the sides sitting in 11th and 10th. Lose and the temptation would be to suggest it will already be a 12th successive season without a true title challenge.
Most of that is not Ten Hag’s fault, of course. But the club’s new chief executive Omar Berrada has set the target of winning the title by 2028 to mark their 150th anniversary. Which would require United to exit transition, to trade their inconsistency for the kind of sustained excellence the true contenders display.
United showed signs of it in Ten Hag’s debut campaign, during a run of 40 games that produced just four defeats. Their last six results – two defeats, two wins, two draws – follow a season when their longest unbeaten run spanned five matches.

As for Man United, there’s been a lot of talk over Bruno Fernandes’ lack of end product – one assist and no goals so far this term from five games. Nobody for the team has actually netted more than once or assisted more than once in the Premier League, however.
But is Fernandes underperforming in terms of execution, or merely playing poorly and not contributing?
He has a combined xG for the season of only 1.9, not high considering he’s still averaging 3.5 shots per 90, and six chances created isn’t high for him either. Missing three big chances is his biggest downfall so far though – while Zirkzee and Garnacho have missed four apiece.

Son hasn’t been Spurs’ go-to man for taking chances this season, but he has certainly been a creative force for them. His four big chances created is the highest in the squad this term, as are his 13 key passes in total.
But in Kulusevski and Maddison they still have two outlets who are laying on the chances and capable of adding goals too – Maddison netted his first of the season last week, though he’s back in central midfield rather than an attacking role now.

A big miss to not have Son, but also a big chance for Timo Werner – it’s his first start of the campaign and he has only 38 minutes of Premier League action to his name so far.
The eyebrow-raising pairing of James Maddison and Rodrigo Bentancur in midfield continues, so it’ll be interesting to see who comes out on top of that particular battle, with Christian Eriksen removed from United’s engine room this time around.

An hour until kick-off at Old Trafford; a win for the hosts today will send them above Spurs and up to eighth. Spurs can go to the same position if they take the three points, while a draw leaves both in the same positions as now, tenth and eleventh.
Not where either one wants to be.
Spurs are ahead of United on goal difference, scoring four more this term, with both conceding five.

Ten Hag on his team’s need to control the match today:
“I think it will be a very intensive game,” the United manager said. “It is always against Tottenham. I think it is our style as well, so I think it is going to be a very dynamic, attractive game.
“Of course every opponent has strengths and weaknesses and Tottenham have their strengths definitely. In their philosophy they are very clear, very attacking but that leaves also space, but that is what they take into account. Maybe that can help but you have to be very good against Tottenham.
“If you want to control the game, then you need again a high performance level and then we will create again, I am sure, and then it’s about taking your chances.”
The 30-year-old attacking midfielder joined from Sporting Lisbon in 2020 and is United’s most successful signing since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.
Fernandes signed a new and improved deal until 2027, with the option of a further year, on the eve of a season that he has yet to set alight. The Portugal international has provided four assists but has yet to find the net ahead of taking on Tottenham this Sunday.
“I think the team brings him now in the situation,” Ten Hag said. “I think he is capable, and he has proven this so many years already in the Premier League that he can create many chances. I am convinced this season he will not do differently. He will come and respond, he will find his form and he is already creating chances, but he will make final passes, he will score goals 100 per cent and it’s just a matter of time.”

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou praised the intent of his team after they started their Europa League campaign with an impressive 3-0 home win over Qarabag despite being forced to play with 10 men for 83 minutes.
After kick-off was delayed due to the late arrival of Qarabag’s team bus, Radu Dragusin’s night lasted only seven minutes when he received a red card for a cynical pull on Juninho as Spurs’ last-man.
It failed to significantly knock Tottenham off their stride though, with Brennan Johnson able to score for a third successive match five minutes later before Pape Sarr doubled the hosts’ advantage in the 52nd minute.
Spurs boss Postecoglou was left with some late concerns after Son limped off in the 71st-minute before Archie Gray appeared in pain late on.
Johnson was also withdrawn at half-time after he continued his rich vein of form, but the Australian played down concerns.
“I haven’t spoke to him. He said he felt a bit tired, but I haven’t spoken to him or the medical team yet,” Postecoglou said of Son.
Erik ten Hag says he respects the critics and even embraces some of their suggestions as Manchester United’s frequently under-fire manager prepares to take on Tottenham.
Sunday sees the stuttering Red Devils welcome Ange Postecoglou’s side four days after their deflating 1-1 draw with FC Twente at an expectant Old Trafford.
Ten Hag was annoyed by United’s mentality and toothlessness in a Europa League opener that followed a frustrating 0-0 stalemate at Crystal Palace.
Those results, but particularly Wednesday’s performance, have increased the noise around United, but Ten Hag has long since learned how to deal with doubters.
Spurs don’t have quite as many absentees to contend with, as attackers Richarlison and Wilson Odobert are the only definite players out through injury.
Son Heung-min went off during the week but Ange Postecoglou wasn’t too downbeat about it, while Brennan Johnson’s substitution was tactical, he added, not through a knock.
There were several changes in their team for the win over Qarabag, though the likes of Micky van der Ven, Dominic Solanke and Son all still played.

United are still suffering with some injury issues, in particular in defence.
Leny Yoro is still out for some time and awaiting a competitive debut, while fellow centre-back Victor Lindelof is sidelined. So two are left-backs Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw, meaning Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui continue as the full-backs in Erik ten Hag’s team.
Not too much scope for him to alter things, there, with both playing in midweek too.

It’s 11th against 10th today and, while we’re early in the season and don’t need to read too much into that just yet, does hint at the up-and-down nature of these sides.
From five league games they’ve both won two, drawn one and lost two – though Spurs will argue they also won their Europa League opener, while United drew in midweek with Twente.
Much more is expected from both, regardless.

Good afternoon and welcome to the Independent’s live coverage of the Premier League – today we’re bringing you Manchester United versus Tottenham Hotspur from Old Trafford, a battle of two sides always seeming capable of more and fighting for European spots for next term, but often lacking consistency.
Joshua Karty field goals of 46 and 37 yards on the Rams’ first two possessions of the game gave them a 6-0 lead. Los Angeles settled for the first kick after Gervon Dexter Sr. sacked Stafford for an eight-yard loss.
Stafford completed 20 of 29 passes for 224 yards but committed two turnovers. The first was instrumental in giving the Bears a lead they would not relinquish.
Late in the first quarter, Montez Sweat sacked Stafford, causing a fumble that was recovered by Kyler Gordon at the Rams’ 16.
On third-and-9 from the 15, Keenan Allen drew a pass interference penalty on cornerback Tre’Davious White in the end zone, giving the Bears the ball at the 1.
With Williams under center and reserve center Doug Kramer Jr. lined up at fullback, Roschon Johnson thundered up the middle for a 1-yard touchdown run that gave the Bears a 7-6 lead with 5:42 remaining in the second quarter.
The Rams were in position to retake the lead, but Karty’s 43-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left with 1:01 to play in the first half.
Swift then turned a screen pass into a 27-yard gain, setting up Cairo Santos’ 40-yard field goal, which increased the Bears’ lead to 10-6 with :09 left in the half.
The Rams marched the length of the field on the opening possession of the second half, but the Bears defense stiffened inside the 10, forcing Los Angeles to settle for Karty’s 25-yard field goal, closing the gap to 10-9.
The Bears offense followed with its best drive of the game, covering 74 yards in 12 plays, capped by Williams’ 9-yard TD strike to DJ Moore on third-and-5. The score increased the Bears’ lead to 17-9 with 2:37 remaining in the third quarter.
The Rams responded with a six-play, 70-yard drive that culminated in running back Kyren Williams’ 3-yard touchdown run. But Stafford was unable to complete the subsequent two-point conversion pass, preserving the Bears’ 17-15 lead.
The Bears followed with their second straight touchdown on Swift’s 36-yard scamper up the middle, widening the margin to 24-15 with 12:26 to play.
Karty then made it a one-score game at 24-18 with a 52-yard field goal with 8:47 remaining. But the Rams never threatened again, with Taylor’s pinpoint punts and Brisker’s late interception clinching the victory.
With the win, the Bears improved to 2-2 and will host the Panthers next Sunday at Soldier Field. Carolina fell to 1-3 with Sunday’s 34-24 home loss to the Bengals.
Flacco would remain the Colts’ quarterback for the remainder of the game, as Richardson was ruled out with a hip injury in the second quarter.
As the second quarter continued, Fields and the Steelers offense found their rhythm in the run game, marching down the field to come within 15 yards of the endzone. As the Steelers crept closer, however, safety Nick Cross flew into Pittsburgh wide receiver George Pickens to force a fumble. The ball was recovered by safety Julian Blackmon, and the Colts regained possession while maintaining their 17-0 lead.
