WATCH LIVE: Trump holds campaign rally at Madison Square Garden in New York

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump took the stage Sunday night at New York’s Madison Square Garden after several of his allies used crude and extreme rhetoric toward Vice President Kamala Harris and other critics of the former president.

Watch the event in the player above.

The Republican nominee began what his campaign said would be his closing argument with the election nine days away by asking the same questions he’s asked at the start of every recent rally: “Are you better off now than you were four years ago?” The crowd responded with a resounding “No!”

“This election is a choice between whether we’ll have four more years of gross incompetence and failure, or whether we’ll begin the greatest years in the history of our country,” he said after being introduced by his wife, Melania Trump, whose rare surprise appearance comes after she has been largely absent on the campaign trail.

The event was marked by a series of racist and sexist comments from several speakers.

Trump’s childhood friend David Rem referred to the Democratic presidential candidate, who is vying to become the first woman to be elected president, as “the Antichrist” and “the devil.” Businessman Grant Cardone told the crowd that Harris ”and her pimp handlers will destroy our country.”

The opening of the rally was a hodgepodge of Trumpism, with an extended clip played from the 1970 film “Patton,” a painting of the American flag with Trump in front of it hugging the Empire State Building as “God Bless America” blared from the speakers, and a stand-up routine from comedian Tony Hinchcliffe that was full of lewd jokes, often invoking racist stereotypes of Latinos, Jews and Black people.

“I don’t know if you guys know this, but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico,” said Hinchcliffe, whose comment was immediately flagged by Harris’ campaign as it competes with Trump to win over Puerto Rican communities in Pennsylvania and other swing states.

Shortly after Hinchcliffe’s appearance, music superstar Bad Bunny, who is from Puerto Rico, endorsed Harris.

With just over a week to go before Election Day, the former president was to take the stage Sunday at one of the country’s most well-known venues, hosting a hometown rally to deliver his campaign’s closing message against Harris. The program leading up to his appearance was filled with conservative officials, longtime allies and media figures popular with conservatives like Dr. Phil McGraw and former Fox News host Tucker Carlson.

Much of the program resembled a somewhat surreal version of July’s Republican National Convention, which convened less than two days after Trump survived an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania. Wrestling icon Hulk Hogan, who appeared at the RNC, strutted again on Sunday wearing a feather boa and tearing off his shirt to reveal a Trump campaign tee underneath. He flexed his muscles repeatedly and gestured to the crowd after telling the audience: “Trump is the only man that can fix this country today.”

While some Democrats and pundits have questioned Trump’s decision to hold what they dismiss as a vanity event in his hometown, the rally guarantees Trump what he most craves: the spotlight, wall-to-wall coverage and a national audience.

The closing message he will deliver Sunday, according to his campaign, is that Harris “broke” the country and that Trump “will fix it.” Rallygoers hours beforehand waved signs with the words “Trump will fix it.”

Several speakers ripped Hillary Clinton, the Democrat defeated by Trump eight years ago, for saying Trump on Sunday would be “reenacting” a pro-Nazi event at the Garden in February 1939. One critic, radio host Sid Rosenberg, used a profanity to denounce the former secretary of state.

“Hey guys, they’re now scrambling and trying to call us Nazis and fascists,” said Alina Habba, one of Trump’s attorneys, who draped a sparkly “MAGA” jacket over the lectern as she spoke. “And you know what they’re claiming, guys? It’s very scary. They’re claiming we’re going to go after them and try and put them in jail. Well, ain’t that rich?”

Declared Hogan in his characteristic raspy growl: “I don’t see no stinkin’ Nazis in here.”

Trump has denounced the four criminal indictments brought against him as politically motivated. He has ramped up his denunciations in recent weeks of “enemies from within,” naming domestic political rivals, and suggested he would use the military to go after them. Harris, in turn, has called Trump a “fascist.”

The arena was full hours before Trump was scheduled to speak. Outside the arena, the sidewalks were overflowing with Trump supporters in red “Make America Great Again” hats. There was a heavy security presence. Streets were blocked off and access to Penn Station was restricted.

In the crowd was Philip D’Agostino, a longtime Trump backer from Queens, the borough where Trump grew up. The 64-year-old said it was appropriate for Trump to be speaking at a place bills itself as “the world’s most famous arena.”

“It just goes to show ya that he has a bigger following of any man that has ever lived,” D’Agostino said.

The rally is one of a series of detours Trump has made from battleground states, including a recent rally in Coachella, California — best known for the famous music festival named after the town — and one in May on the Jersey Shore. This summer he campaigned in the South Bronx.

WATCH: Trump speaks at campaign rally in heavily Democratic, majority Hispanic area of the Bronx

To reach them, Trump has spent hours appearing on popular podcasts. And his campaign has worked to create viral moments like his visit last weekend to a McDonald’s restaurant, where he made fries and served supporters through the drive-thru window. Video of the stop posted by his campaign has been viewed more than 40 million times on TikTok alone.

Harris has also traveled to non-battleground states for major events intended to drive a national message. She appeared in Houston Friday with music superstar Beyoncé to speak about reproductive rights, and will deliver her own closing argument Tuesday from the Ellipse in Washington, where Trump spoke ahead of the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot.

Trump will be joined at the rally by supporters including Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, who has spent tens of millions of dollars to boost his campaign.

Trump often compares himself to the country’s greatest entertainers. The former reality TV star has long talked about wanting to hold a rally at the venue in interviews and private conversations.

Beyond the national spotlight and the appeal of appearing on one of the world’s most famous stages, Republicans in the state say the rally will also help down-ballot candidates. New York is home to a handful of competitive congressional races that could determine which party controls the House next year.

Trump will also use the stop as a major fundraising opportunity as he continues to seriously lag Harris in the money race.

New York has not voted for a Republican for president in 40 years. But that hasn’t stopped Trump from continuing to insist he believes he can win.

Trump routinely uses his hometown as a foil before audiences in other states, painting a dark vision of the city that bears little resemblance to reality. He’s cast it as crime-ridden and overrun by violent, immigrant gangs who have taken over Fifth and Madison avenues and occupied Times Square.

Trump has a complicated history with the place where he built his business empire and that made him a tabloid and reality TV star. Its residents indicted him last year on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. He was found guilty in that case, and also found liable in civil court for business fraud and sexual abuse.

Pittsburgh Steelers defeat New York Jets 37-15 in Russell Wilson’s Pittsburgh debut

Pittsburgh Steelers defeat New York Jets 37-15 in Russell Wilson’s Pittsburgh debut

A new face in the lineup led to a win on “Sunday Night Football.” And no, we’re not talking about Davante Adams and the New York Jets.

Playing in his Pittsburgh debut after returning from a calf injury that had sidelined him since the preseason, quarterback Russell Wilson shook off a pair of shaky drives to throw for 264 yards and two touchdowns in a 37-15 win against New York.

The Steelers are now 5-2.

Though Justin Fields had led Pittsburgh to a 4-2 record in Wilson’s place, the team opted to give Wilson, the team’s starter coming out of training camp, a shot once his health improved. Wilson misfired on early throws against the Jets but soon found rhythm with deep touch passes and completed five passes to receiver George Pickens for 111 yards.

The quarterback-to-receiver connection everyone wanted to see was Adams in his reunion with former Green Bay Packers teammate Aaron Rodgers. The Jets traded with Las Vegas for Adams days earlier as part of a drama-filled week that included firing head coach Robert Saleh and demoting play caller Nathaniel Hackett. But inserting Adams, who lived with Rodgers during the week, into the starting lineup did not jump-start the offense as New York fell to 2-5.

Adams was targeted nine times but finished with three catches for 30 yards. His presence created room for teammates, but the Jets struggled to finish drives after Rodgers was intercepted twice by Beanie Bishop Jr.

Rodgers finished with 276 yards with a touchdown, as well.

The silver lining for the Jets’ weekend is that pass rusher Haason Reddick ended his contract holdout Sunday, allowing New York to insert a player with 58 career sacks into a defense that has dealt with attrition.

Yankees vs. Guardians: Cleveland stuns New York with HRs from Jhonkensy Noel, David Fry

Yankees vs. Guardians: Cleveland stuns New York with HRs from Jhonkensy Noel, David Fry

A Cleveland Guardians fiasco on Thursday turned into one of the greatest games in franchise history, with a 7-5 victory in Game 3 of the ALCS that they now trail 2-1.

After a strong 7 2/3 innings from starting pitcher Matthew Boyd and the elite Cleveland bullpen, Emmanuel Clase entered for a four-out save in the eighth inning and blew it by allowing back-to-back homers from Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. It was a gut punch of a game — until the bottom of the ninth inning.

With two outs and a runner on second, Guardians rookie Jhonkensy Noel introduced himself to the world with a game-tying, pinch-hit home run, sending Progressive Field into a frenzy. He knew it the instant he made contact.

One inning later, David Fry hit his own two-run homer to give Cleveland a walk-off win and life in the ALCS. It was a game in which each team’s closer blew a four-out save, and it was exactly what Cleveland needed to get back into the series.

Game 4 is scheduled for 8:08 p.m. ET Friday (TBS), with Gavin Williams taking the mound for the Guardians against rookie Luis Gil for the Yankees.

Here’s how it all went down on Yahoo Sports:

LIVE COVERAGE IS OVER67 updates

  • FINAL: Guardians 7, Yankees 5

A perfect end to a classic of a game. David Fry doesn’t just hit Naylor in — he clubs a walk-off homer off Clay Holmes to give the Guardians a win that’s going to be remembered for a while.

Instead of facing a sweep, the Guardians will enter Game 4 on Friday with a chance to tie the series. It will be Gavin Williams vs. Luis Gil.

  • Yankees get a second out on a Steven Kwan grounder, but Naylor reaches third. David Fry will hit with the winning run 90 feet away.

  • And then Rocchio advances him with a sac bunt. The winning run is at second base with one out and the top of the Guardians order due up.

  • Bo Naylor leads off with a single …

  • Pedro Avila throws a scoreless 10th inning, and here come the Guardians with a chance to walk it off. Clay Holmes will take over with Bo Naylor, Brayan Rocchio and Steven Kwan due up.

  • Another angle of one of the biggest homers in Guardians history if they take this game.

  • Oh my, what a play from Andrés Giménez and Josh Naylor. Jazz Chisholm Jr. appeared to sneak a grounder out of the infield, but Giménez tracked it down and somehow got it to Naylor in time. Neither player was on balance while handling the ball, but it’s a much-needed second out in the 10th inning.

  • Who is Jhonkensy Noel?

The Guardians’ newest hero is a rookie who got his major-league call-up in June and played 67 games during the regular season, hitting .218/.288/.486 with 13 home runs. Exactly the kind of guy you want when you need a homer.

He wasn’t a huge international prospect when he signed with the Guardians in 2017, and he never made a top-100 prospect list, but he’s a big dude with big power at 6-foot-3 and 250 pounds. Hence his nickname, Big Christmas (his last name is Noel, see).

  • The inning ends one batter later with a strikeout, but we are suddenly headed to extras. This is a playoff game.

  • Guardians 5, Yankees 5

It’s Big Christmas in October. Jhonkensy comes through with the biggest homer of his career, a game-tying, no-doubt, pinch-hit, two-run homer to left field to stun the Yankees.

  • OK, now Lane Thomas hits a double to the center-field wall. It is down to pinch hitter Jhonkensy Noel.

  • Then Josh Naylor hits into a 1-6-3 double play. Guardians are suddenly down to their last out.

  • José Ramírez reaches base on an Anthony Rizzo error, and now the Guardians have the tying run at the plate with no outs. Clay Holmes is warming in case this goes south for Weaver.

  • Juan Soto strikes out to end the top of the ninth. The Guardians will need two runs against Luke Weaver, who stays in for a four-out save.

  • Yankees 5, Guardians 3

A sacrifice fly from Gleyber Torres brings in Volpe, with Alex Verdugo going to third. Next up: Juan Soto.

  • Eli Morgan came in for Clase and is now coming out after striking out Austin Wells. Still two runners in scoring position with one out as Andrew Walters takes over.

  • Hoo boy. The Guardians appeared to have the lead runner out at third, but the rundown ends with José Ramírez losing the ball while trying to tag Anthony Volpe. Now the Yankees have runners on second and third with no outs and the chance to add some insurance.

  • Weaver strikes Fry out, and the Guardians are down to their last three outs. It will be José Ramírez, Josh Naylor and Lane Thomas in the bottom of the ninth.

Rare comet visible in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut this month. Here’s how to see it.

Rare comet visible in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut this month. Here’s how to see it.

NEW YORK — The northern lights captivated countless people across the Tri-State Area this week, but Mother Nature isn’t finished showing off yet.

If you’re lucky, experts say you might be able to spot a comet that hasn’t been seen from Earth in 80,000 years in the Tri-State Area this month.

How to see the comet

In New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, you’ll need a clear view facing west in order to see the comet with the naked eye.

“You really want to wait for the sun to set, but not long after,” said Bart Fried, membership chairman of the Amateur Astronomers Association.

Your best chance at the possibly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will come 30 minutes after sunset if you look right above where the sun sets, according to Fried.

Many people in the Tri-State Area were able to get a glimpse of the comet Saturday night.

Depending on cloud cover, you may be able to see the comet again next week, but with each passing day, it will get higher in the sky and become dimmer, making it more difficult to view.

The CCNY Planetarium created a simulation to show the comet’s position.

“The formal name is C-2023A3,” said Dr. James Hedberg, the planetarium’s director. “It’s thought to have originated in the ort cloud, which is this distant collection of rocks and ice, way, way far away.”

“The Neanderthals were the first people to see it,” Fried said. “Centuries ago, they were portraits of doom. Today, kind of just the opposite.”

Why are comets so rare?

There’s no guarantee the comet will ever make its way back close enough to Earth to see again, according to Hedberg.

“It’s these rare moments that change your lives,” he said. “This thing has spent tens of thousands of years getting here.”

“When there’s a good comet, you can’t take your eyes off it,” Fried said.

Jackie Faherty, senior research scientist at the American Museum of Natural History, explains why seeing a comet like this is so rare.

“Because our solar system is pretty cleared out,” Faherty said. “You just don’t know if you’re ever going to see one because they have to have the right conditions to get the right amount of sunlight and be the right distance away from us.”

The comet is nothing to be worried about, experts say, since it’s so far away from Earth. So enjoy the show in the sky!

New York Mets defeat Philadelphia Phillies 7-2 in Game 3

New York Mets defeat Philadelphia Phillies 7-2 in Game 3

NEW YORK — When his brilliant performance was finally over Tuesday, Sean Manaea gave the ball to his manager, said a few words to his infielders and began a different walk off the mound.

The crowd showered him with cheers, delighted with his dominance in the most important game of the wondrous 2024 New York Mets’ season. His mind was elsewhere. He took a deep breath. He clapped his glove, tipped his hat to the adoring fans and blew two kisses. One toward them and one toward the sky.

“That was for my Aunt Mabel,” Manaea said. “Just got a message that she had passed away early this morning. And, yeah, so that game was for her.”

What he dedicated to her, given the context, was the best outing of his major league career in the Mets’ 7-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 3 of the National League Division Series. The 32-year-old left-hander pitched into the eighth inning, affording the Mets much-needed length to spare a taxed bullpen. He held the Phillies, a star-studded group familiar with October intensity, to three hits and two walks with 91 pitches. The only run charged to him scored after he exited.

The start, combined with two early blasts and more late-inning magic, gave the Mets a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series. The Mets can eliminate their division rival Phillies and advance to the National League Championship Series with a win in Game 4 on Wednesday.

“We’ve got to stay humble,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. “We’ve got to come back tomorrow. We have to prepare, we go about our business pregame, and then we’ve got to go out there, we got to compete and we’ve got to go out there and execute. We’ll see what happens.”

The Mets had gone 16 days without a home game before Tuesday. They left for the road unsure if they would return in 2024 after beating the Phillies on Sept. 22, commencing a whirlwind stretch that took them from the regular season to the playoffs, from Atlanta to Milwaukee, back to Atlanta, back to Milwaukee and, finally, to Philadelphia to begin this series Saturday.

Citi Field was ready for their homecoming. A raucous sellout crowd welcomed them for the franchise’s first divisional round game since 2015. Seymour Weiner, a World War II veteran who became an internet sensation after being honored at a game in April, wished the team well in a message played on the videoboard. Grimace, the purple McDonald’s mascot and team good luck charm since throwing out the first pitch June 12, took the 7 train to the game and was introduced holding a pumpkin — a recent source of inspiration for first baseman Pete Alonso.

The place erupted when Alonso blasted a first-pitch fastball from Aaron Nola, an old nemesis going back to their college days as SEC foes, to right field for a solo home run in the second inning. It was Alonso’s third postseason home run. All have been to the opposite field after he hit just four of his 34 homers in the regular season the other way.

“It’s more so just hitting the ball where it’s pitched and hitting the ball on the sweet spot of the bat,” Alonso said. “That’s pretty much all I’m trying to do every single AB.”

Jesse Winker doubled the Mets’ lead by launching a fastball from Nola to the second deck down the right-field line. New York tacked on two runs in the sixth, two in the seventh and another in the eighth to give the bullpen ample cushion after Manaea departed.

Manaea’s outing was not without turbulence. It surfaced in the sixth inning in the form of two walks to the top of the Phillies’ lineup to begin the frame, bringing up two-time MVP Bryce Harper and giving his manager a difficult decision. At that point, Mendoza was leaning toward removing Manaea after he faced Harper, a left-handed hitter, to avoid having him pitch to the right-handed Nick Castellanos for a third time.

Then Manaea started attacking again. He struck out Harper on three pitches — a rare left-on-left changeup and two sweepers. The rebound persuaded Mendoza to stick with him.

“Once he got Harper there,” Mendoza said, “I thought he had momentum back.”

Manaea didn’t stop attacking, jumping ahead 0-2 as Castellanos fouled off two pitches. Castellanos lined the third, a changeup out of the strike zone, to second baseman Jose Iglesias, who flipped the ball to shortstop Francisco Lindor at second base for a game-changing, inning-ending double play. Manaea unleashed two roars as Citi Field exploded around him.

“He was on the attack,” Mendoza said. “It was a different look today. … His mound presence, his demeanor, like there was something different about him today. I’m just proud of him.”

Manaea, whose midseason shift to a lower arm slot has netted rousing success before he hits free agency this winter, exacted some revenge with Tuesday’s outing. Two years ago, pitching for the San Diego Padres, the Phillies tagged him for five runs in 1⅓ innings out of the bullpen in Game 4 of the NLDS. The appearance concluded the worst season of his career. Desperate for answers, he emailed Driveline Baseball, the popular data-driven player development organization, that night.

“That moment for me was rock bottom pretty much,” Manaea said.

On Tuesday, he was at his peak on a day he will never forget.

New York Jets fire coach Robert Saleh after 2-3 start and apparent tension with Aaron Rodgers

New York Jets fire coach Robert Saleh after 2-3 start and apparent tension with Aaron Rodgers

The New York Jets fired head coach Robert Saleh on Tuesday amid the team’s disappointing start to this season and apparent tensions with star quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich will be the team’s interim head coach, the Jets announced, as Saleh leaves Florham Park, New Jersey, with an overall record of 20-26 in a little more than 3¼ seasons at the helm.

“This morning, I informed Robert Saleh that he will no longer serve as Head Coach of the Jets,” team owner Woody Johnson said in a statement.

More Sports from NBC News

“This was not an easy decision but we are not where we should be given our expectations, and I believe now is the best time for us to move in a different direction.”

The team entered the season with high hopes and Rodgers’ return to the huddle after he missed nearly all of 2023 with a leg injury.

The Jets were blown out in the season opener by the San Francisco 49ers before they rebounded with wins over the woeful Tennessee Titans and the New England Patriots.

But the past two weekends have ended in frustrating losses, at home to the Denver Broncos and in London against the Minnesota Vikings.

In addition to the losing, there have also been perceptions of tension between Rogers and Saleh.

The Jets committed five false start penalties in the Denver loss, and Saleh said they could be linked to the tricky cadence Rodgers uses when he barks out pre-snap signals.

And in the win over New England, Rodgers appeared to rebuff an attempted hug from Saleh after a touchdown.

When he was hired, Saleh was celebrated as the first Muslim head coach of an NFL team. He was escorted out of team headquarters by the team’s security director, NBC Sports reported.

“We commend Coach Robert Saleh for making history as the first American Muslim head coach in NFL history,” the Council on American Islamic Relations, a Muslim civil rights organization, said in a statement Tuesday.

“Although no one should jump to conclusions about why the Jets fired Coach Saleh, the report that Jets security physically escorted Saleh out of the building does raise concerns about the possible motive for such unusual hostility.”

Rep. Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y., called Saleh’s firing a “raw deal” and pinned the team’s poor fortunes on Rodgers, offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, the front office and former QB Zach Wilson.

“Robert Saleh got a raw deal and Aaron Rodgers undermined him every step of the way,” Bowman posted on X. “This was downhill since @nyjets drafted Zach Wilson. Nathaniel Hackett is trash. Saleh kept the defense great through the toughest times. Raw deal.”

Bowman also wondered out loud whether Saleh’s embrace of his Lebanese heritage could have played a role in this termination.

Although Saleh has worn a patch of the Lebanese flag on his in-game gear before, it drew new eyes Sunday in the wake of Israel’s ongoing attack on its northern neighbor.

Saleh, 45, joined the Jets after a successful four-season run as defensive coordinator of the 49ers.

“We are very proud of Robert and the achievements he made in his young career,” American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee Executive Director Abed Ayoub said in a statement.

“As the first Muslim Arab-American NFL head coach, he has paved the way for future talent in our community. We have no doubt that New York is not the last stop on his coaching and football journey. The community will always be there, cheering on his continued success and growth.”

Saleh is also the third coach in this past decade to be fired after his team lost in London.

The Oakland Raiders terminated Dennis Allen in 2014 after an 0-4 start and a loss to the Miami Dolphins at Wembley Stadium.

Miami fired Joe Philbin after his 1-3 Dolphins lost in 2015 to the Jets, also at Wembley.

New York Jets fire head coach Robert Saleh – NBC New York

New York Jets fire head coach Robert Saleh – NBC New York

The New York Jets have fired head coach Robert Saleh.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the news on Tuesday, just two days after the Jets’ 23-17 loss in London against the Minnesota Vikings, and the team later confirmed it.

Jeff Ulbrich, who was serving as defensive coordinator, has been named the interim head coach. Ulbrich, 47, has been the Jets’ DC since 2021 when Saleh was hired.

“This morning, I informed Robert Saleh that he will no longer serve as the head coach of the Jets,” team owner Woody Johnson said in a statement. “I thanked him for his hard work these past three-and-a-half years and wish him and his family well moving forward. This was not an easy decision, but we are not where we should be given our expectations, and I believe now is the best time for us to move in a different direction.

“Jeff Ulbrich will serve as our interim head coach for the remainder of the season. He is a tough coach who has the respect of the coaches and players on this team. I believe he along with the coaches on this staff can get thee most out of our talented team and attain the goals we established this offseason.”

Saleh spent over three seasons as the Jets head coach, going 20-36 and never finishing with a winning record (4-13 in 2021, 7-10 in 2022 and 2023). New York is 2-3 this season, just one game behind the Buffalo Bills in the AFC East with a Monday Night Football matchup looming in six days.

Schefter reported that Saleh had one year left on his contract, but the franchise was obviously determined to move on after two straight losses and an unproductive start to Aaron Rodgers’ tenure. The 40-year-old quarterback has seven touchdowns and four interceptions through five weeks, and his 81.6 passer rating is the worst of his career as a starter.

Despite boasting top-five defense in yardage in 2022, 2023 and 2024 (through five games), the Jets never figured out their quarterback situation under Saleh. The team started six different signal callers in his 56 games — Zach Wilson (33), Mike White (7), Rodgers (6), Joe Flacco (5), Trevor Siemian (3) and Tim Boyle (2).

After facing the Bills at home in Week 6, the Jets will hit the road for a Sunday Night Football game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

MLB playoffs 2024: New York Yankees take 2-1 series lead over Kansas City Royals with Giancarlo Stanton’s home run

MLB playoffs 2024: New York Yankees take 2-1 series lead over Kansas City Royals with Giancarlo Stanton’s home run

NEW YORK — Giancarlo Stanton hit a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning amid a battle of the bullpens, and the New York Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals 3-2 on Wednesday night in Game 3 of their AL Division Series at Kauffman Stadium.

Stanton finished with three hits, drove in two runs and stole a base for the first time in four years for the Yankees, who will turn to six-time All-Star pitcher Gerrit Cole on Thursday night with a chance to reach the American League Championship Series.

The Royals used four relievers before Kris Bubic took over for the eighth. The left-hander struck out Austin Wells before Stanton hit his 3-1 pitch nearly 420 feet to left to give New York the lead.

The Royals tried to answer off Luke Weaver in the bottom half, getting Bobby Witt Jr.’s first hit of the series and a two-out single by franchise stalwart Salvador Perez. Weaver recovered to get Yuli Gurriel to fly out to end the threat, and he also handled the ninth to earn the save and cap 4 1/3 scoreless innings by the New York bullpen.

The Yankees won despite another frustrating night in the postseason for MVP front-runner Aaron Judge. He went 0 for 4 with a walk, and is now 1 for 11 with only an infield single through three games against the Royals.

It helped that the powerful Yankees drew nine walks Wednesday night, giving them 22 for the series.

It was the first playoff game at the K in 3,268 days, since the Royals beat the Mets in Game 2 of the 2015 World Series. They won their first title in 30 years a few days later in New York.

The first baseman on that Royals team, Eric Hosmer, was on hand to deliver the first pitch for a crowd that included Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

The Yankees had some good swings against Seth Lugo’s dizzying array of nine pitches, but they had nothing to show for it early on.

Juan Soto flew out to center in the first on what would have been a homer in 17 ballparks. Judge followed with a liner snared by Witt at shortstop that had an exit velocity of 114 mph. And in the third, Gleyber Torres hit a ball to the warning track in right, moments after a review confirmed that his would-be RBI blooper down the line had landed foul.

The Yankees broke through in the fourth on Stanton’s double – Soto came around from first to score, though he might well have been out had Witt delivered a better relay throw to the plate. And in the fifth, Soto added a bases-loaded sacrifice fly.

The Royals answered with two in the fifth. Kyle Isbel got them on the board with a two-out double to left, and Michael Massey ripped a sinking liner that somehow missed Soto’s glove in right for an RBI triple.

Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt was dinged for both runs on four hits and a walk in 4 2/3 innings. Lugo went five for Kansas City, allowing two hits and walking four against the team that led the league in free passes this season.

Denver Broncos defense DOMINATES Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets offense

Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos are now 2-2 after they beat Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets. Bo Nix didn’t have the greatest day, but he did get his first passing TD of his career when he hit Courtland Sutton in the second half. The defense led by Pat Surtain II was lights out and never let the Jets offense get in a groove. Join Super Bowl 50 Champion Todd Davis, Knowshon Moreno, Jurrell Casey, and Henry Chisholm as they break down the win on the DNVR Broncos Podcast.
