No medal for Simone Biles on the balance beam this time after a devastating fall took her out of medal contention.

The American gymnastics star slipped and fell off the apparatus at the end of her acrobatic series during the Paris Olympics’ women’s balance beam finals, denying her an opportunity to add to the bronzes she won on the event at the 2016 and 2020 Games.

Wearing a blue-and-white leotard featuring over 5,000 crystals, Biles was more than halfway through her set when she couldn’t quite keep her balance. The 27-year-old hopped off the beam and onto the mat while thousands inside a packed Bercy Arena — including NFL great Tom Brady — let out an audible “ohhh.”

Biles received a score of 13.100, tied with U.S. teammate Suni Lee for fourth.

There was an extended wait for her score to post. At one point, Biles rolled her eyes in seeming annoyance knowing she wasn’t going to finish on the medal stand.

Alice D’Amato of Italy took the gold with a score of 14.366. Zhou Yaqin of China earned silver with a 14.100, just ahead of bronze medalist Manila Esposito of Italy. Italy, which won silver behind the U.S. in the team competition, had never medaled on beam before.

Biles finished in a tie for fifth with Lee, whose hopes for a gold on beam she’s long coveted ended in the middle of her routine when she fell during the end of her acro series, just like Biles did a few minutes later.

The 21-year-old Lee will still leave Paris with three medals just months after she was bedridden while trying to navigate a pair of chronic kidney-related diseases.

While Lee’s Olympics are over, Biles is also in the floor final later Monday, an event where she’s never lost a major international competition, including a gold in Rio do Janeiro eight years ago.

“We were both just kind of annoyed just because we know what we’re capable of,” Lee said. “We weren’t able to get it done today, but she still has floor and she’s the G.O.A.T., so she’ll be amazing.”

There is plenty of history on the line for Biles in what could be the last competition of her career. Biles has 10 medals in her Olympic career, including seven golds. A medal in the floor final would tie her with Czechoslovakia’s Vera Caslavska for the second-most medals by a female gymnast in Olympic history, trailing only former Soviet Union great Larisa Latynina’s 18.

Scottie Scheffler wins gold medal in Olympics golf – NBC New York

Scottie Scheffler added a gold medal to an amazing 2024 season that has already included a second green jacket with a win at the Masters. Scheffler won the men’s individual stroke play golf tournament at the Paris Olympics’ Le Golf National course with a wild final round on Sunday.

Scheffler, 28, wins his first Olympic medal in his Olympics debut and brings the gold back to the United States.

Scheffler scored a -9 under final round of 62 on Sunday to catapult himself onto the top of the podium. He finished -19 under par. Scheffler would birdie holes 1, 2, 3, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16 and 17 for an exciting final round.

He set an Olympic record for 72 holes at 19-under 265. Great Britain’s Tommy Fleetwood, who fell out of the lead with a bogey from the rough on the 17th, got up-and-down for par on the final hole for a 66 to win the silver medal.

Scheffler was visibly emotional during the medal ceremony as the national anthem played, appearing to wipe away tears in his eyes.

“I’m not big on comparisons or anything like that,” Scheffler said when asked by NBC Olympics where this ranks among his accomplishments. “I’m just going to enjoy this moment. Like I said, I take tremendous pride in representing my country and I’m very proud to be going home, to be going back to the USA with a medal.”

Hideki Matsuyama (-17) won the bronze. France’s Victor Perez (-16) finished fourth, just off the podium. Ireland’s Rory McIlroy (-15) and Spain’s John Rahm (-15) finished tied for fifth.

USA’s Xander Schauffele, who won the gold in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, finished tied for ninth at -12. Wyndham Clark (-11) tied for 14th and Colin Morikawa (-5) finished tied at 24th.

Schauffele was tied for the 54-hole lead with Rahm until he had a collapse of his own. So did Rory McIlroy, one off the lead until hitting wedge into the water on the 15th hole.

Scheffler is currently ranked number one in the world and is well positioned to win player of the year. He has six PGA wins in 2024, including winning the Masters (his second win in Augusta), the Memorial, the RBC Heritage, the Players Championship, and the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Scheffler is the first golfer to win six times on the PGA tour in a single season since Tiger Woods in 2009.

All four golf majors also went to a player from the United States.

“It was a pretty cool experience, it was very special,” Scheffler said. “Like I said, representing your country is amazing. Putting on the flag every morning is a pretty humbling experience. Going out here and doing our best. It was definitely a fun experience, it was really cool to go see the other events. I’m proud to be going home with a medal.”

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone makes it look easy to run 400m hurdles.

Team USA star comfortably sailed through her first race of these Olympics Games, where she looks to defend the gold medal she won in Tokyo.

The Olympic champion and world-record holder clipped her sixth hurdle, something you don’t see often from the track star, but nothing stopped her from winning her heat with a comfortable distance ahead of all her competitors.

Despite the ease of the first heat, McLaughlin-Levrone isn’t without competition. Femke Bol of the Netherlands is the reigning world champion. The two women are the only athletes to have ever posted a time below 51 seconds in the event.

Caeleb Dressel breaks down in tears after falling short in 50m free, 100m butterfly – NBC New York

Team USA’s Caeleb Dressel broke down in tears, letting it all out Friday evening after he finished his final individual event of the Paris Olympics — without even close to the results he had been hoping for.

The decorated American missed chances to defend two of his Olympic titles from three years ago in Tokyo, and he broke down. Dressel sobbed for several minutes, the finality and disappointment of the moment hitting him. Hard.

The emotional moment came shortly after his sixth-place showing in the 50-meter freestyle, and then failing to reach the final in the 100 butterfly.

Dr. Jud Ready, a Principal Research Engineer at Georgia Tech, explains that the organizers of the Paris Olympics picked maximizing the number of seats in the swim stadium over maximizing the speed of the competition pool.

“Obviously it’s not my best work,” Dressel said. “I had a lot of fun though, I can honestly say that. It hasn’t been my best week, I don’t think I need to shy away from that, but the racing’s been really fun here.”

Bouncing along moments before his freestyle race, Dressel made his way onto the pool deck when his name was introduced looking confident as ever. He raised his arms and side-shuffled to reach his spot in Lane 2.

Dressel set Olympic records while winning both the 50 free and 100 fly — the latter also a world record — among his five golds at the Tokyo Games, but touched the wall in 21.61 for sixth in the free Thursday. His fly semifinal was a shocking 13th-fastest.

Dressel hung over the lane rope after the free, taking his time leaving the water. He insists he won’t let these disappointing races ruin his stay in France.

“Just seeing the moment for what it is instead of relying on just the times,” Dressel said. “I’m at the Olympic Games. I won’t forget that. I’d like to be performing better. I’m not. I train to go faster than the times I’m going, I know that. It’s tough. It’s a little heartbreaking, a little heartbreaking for sure.”

The 27-year-old Dressel has been cheered on by wife Meghan and their five-month-old son, August, sporting oversized protective headphones in the deafening noise of La Defense Arena.

The baby did get to witness Dad bring home one gold medal. Dressel anchored the winning 4×100-meter freestyle foursome as the Americans beat out the rival Australians and Chinese on Saturday night in Day 1 of Olympic swimming competition.

That marked his eighth career gold. In Tokyo, he also won the 100 free and 4×100 medley relay after capturing golds in the two relays at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, too.

Now, Dressel is going to enjoy this last stretch in Paris as best he can. After all, Dressel might not have been here at all if he hadn’t taken a prolonged break from swimming in 2022 to work on his mental health and regain his love for the sport.

He turns 28 on Aug. 16, and now there’s plenty more work and self-care to be done. It has made such a difference for Dressel.

“Nope, I wouldn’t be at this meet, I probably would have been done swimming a long time ago, to be honest,” he said. “It’s still a work in progress, so I have years ahead of me I’m looking to, but a lot went into this just to be here.”
